Rigoletto

Rigoletto, NBR New Zealand Opera 7, 9, 13, 15 and 17 June Opera doesn’t get more melodramatic than Rigoletto, Verdi’s heart-breaking tale of love and deception. It features the celebrated aria ‘La donna è mobile’, one of the most recognisable tunes in all opera. Lindy Hume, whose 2007 Lucia di Lammermoor thrilled its audiences, returns to New Zealand to direct this new production. The NBR New Zealand Opera’s Director of Music, Wyn Davies, conducts a stellar cast. Warwick Fyfe plays the great central role of Rigoletto; Emma Pearson returns from her triumphant Susanna in 2010 to sing his daughter Gilda; and Rafael Rojas plays the philandering Duke of Mantua. Accompanied by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra with the Chapman Tripp Opera Chorus. Venue: Auckland – ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre. Single Tickets: $49.50 to $189.50. Concessions available for benefactors, senior citizens, students and group bookings. Service fees apply. Bookings: NZ Opera Box Office, Tel (09) 379 4068 or The Edge, Phone 0800 BUYTICKETS (0800 289 842) or www.the-edge.co.nz

Auckland Zoo If you haven’t paid a visit to Auckland Zoo in a while, it’s about time you did as their latest exhibit, Te Wao Nui, gives a fantastic overview of New Zealand’s animals, plants and culture. It takes up a whopping fifth of the zoo, so there is heaps to check out in this showcase of New Zealand’s awesome natural world. Te Wao Nui is home to around 60 different native animal species, more than 100 native plant species and stunning Maori artworks. There are six habitats to visit, and these include The Coast (Takutai), The Islands (Moutere Rahui), The Wetlands (Nga Repo), The Night (Te Po), The Forest (Te Wao Nui a Tane) and The High Country (Whenua Waotu). You’ll find adorable little blue penguins waddling about in The Coast, along with New Zealand fur seals and spotted shags. In The Islands, you’ll get up close to tuatara, the Antipodes Island parakeet, Campbell Island teal, Northland green gecko, forest gecko, jeweled gecko, Falla’s skink and the Chevron skink. Many of the species on display are not found anywhere else in the world, and are threatened with extinction, so this is a fantastic chance to see them up close. Auckland Zoo works with the Department of Conservation and other conservation partners on a range of species, returning animals to the wild and monitoring and protecting wild populations. Lenny Henry, 24 June Acclaimed UK comedian, actor, writer, TV presenter, and radio host Lenny Henry returns to his roots with a funky, funny and personal one man show, Cradle to Rave , about the thing he loves most: music. Touring to Auckland and Wellington in June 2012, Cradle to Rave is Henry’s most personal show yet, offering a hilarious and touching insight into a man to whom music matters a little too much. From growing up thinking Elvis was a relative as there were so many pictures of him in the house, to missing a cue during his acclaimed theatrical debut as Othello because he was listening to hip hop, Cradle to Rave sets Henry’s family, first loves and fame against a musical backdrop – a comic cabaret voyage through his life told via its eclectic soundtrack. Cradle to Rave peers behind the curtain of Henry’s successes to examine his life and his thwarted musical ambitions, with plenty of laughs and lots of funky tunes along the way. Directed by the critically acclaimed UK theatre director Richard Wilson, Cradle to Rave is Henry’s musical journey from fan boy to the greatest singer the UK never had. Venue: ASB Theatre, the EDGE. 8pm. Bookings: (09) 357 3355 www.buytickets.co.nz

Auckland offers a host of activities and adventures, from sophisticated museums, galleries and sightseeing attractions, to urban adventures, harbour cruises, scenic offshore islands and award-winning wineries. Auckland lies between two stunning harbours – the Waitemata and the Manukau. The city’s residents enjoy a relaxed, outdoor lifestyle, with vineyards, parks, sandy beaches and rugged ranges right on their doorstep. Down at the waterfront, the Viaduct Harbour is a good place to begin exploring. You can climb to the summit of bush-clad Rangitoto Island, visit the wineries and art studios on Waiheke, picnic on the beach at Motuihe or see endangered native birdlife on beautiful Tiritiri Matangi. Head uptown and you can ride the lift to the top of the Sky Tower – the Southern Hemisphere’s highest – for magnificent views of the city and harbour, or raise your heart-rate with a SkyWalk ® or SkyJump®. The city’s landmark Harbour Bridge has more adventure options to tempt the daredevils, including a bridge climb and the world’s first bridge bungy. Culture vultures will find themselves at home in the city’s sophisticated galleries and museums. You can browse New Zealand’s largest collection of art at the Auckland Art Gallery, view the rare Maori taonga (treasures) at Auckland Museum, go sailing on a heritage vessel at Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum or ride the historic tram at MOTAT. There are plenty of family attractions to keep you busy. Join a guided tour of the Botanic Gardens, watch the sharks being fed at Kelly Tarlton’s, get up close to the animals at the Auckland Zoo, enjoy the latest amusement rides at Rainbow’s End or head north to see an authentic Kiwi farm show at SheepWorld. Dining Out

Wildfire ©Tourism Auckland

Auckland’s vibrant dining scene ranges from acclaimed wineries and al fresco cafés to bistros, bars and chic city restaurants. Wine and food lovers are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out in Auckland. Down at the city’s waterfront, the Viaduct Harbour is the perfect place to enjoy harbour views with your meal. A bus ride away, Ponsonby Road and Parnell are popular gourmet stops and packed with pavement cafés, chic bars and restaurants and designer stores. For winery dining, try some of the award-winning vineyards to the west or north of the city or on beautiful Waiheke Island. The wine regions also have some great country cafés and breweries to discover. CBD Auckland’s central business district offers a wide selection of cafés, bars and restaurants for eating out – all handy to the city’s entertainment venues and clubs. Popular dining strips include High Street, with its lively eateries and music venues, and upper Queen Street with its strip of budget Asian cafés. Waterfront If you fancy a view as you dine, downtown Auckland is the place to go. Dine al fresco at the lively Viaduct Harbour, try one of the chic waterfront eateries on Quay Street or Princes Wharf, or take a lunch or dinner cruise and see the city from the water. Parnell A short bus ride from the central city, this charming colonialstyle village is known for its designer shops, art galleries and stylish cafés. Parnell’s many cafés and restaurants offer plenty of dining options from upmarket brasseries to gourmet ethnic eateries. Newmarket Heading south, the busy shopping precinct of Newmarket has a full range of options from cafés, bars and pubs to ethnic eateries, Tex-Mex and an organic pizzeria.

Driving in NZ

77

Nelson Street off-ramp

For detailed information on the New Zealand road code, the official guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations.

Road Rules You must be 21 to hire a rental car or mobile home, and show a current driving licence and/or an international licence. New Zealand drives on the left so remember to keep left at all times. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads, T-intersections and driveways where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a car to wear a seatbelt at all times while mobile. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffic laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for nonemergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.

Tips for Safe Driving • Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care not to exceed the signed speed limits as fines can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor. • If you notice traffic building up behind you, pull over at a rest area to let it pass. Be extra careful when rejoining traffic. • Winding roads, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions. • Ensure you are at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front. • Ringing bells and flashing red lights at a railway crossing signal that a train is coming. Many railway crossings are not controlled by barrier arms. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care. browse and book @ www.jasons.com
