24 hours in Auckland
You’ve arrived in one of the world’s most liveable cities, but you only have 24 hours, or less, to visit? Auckland’s vibrant city style and marine playground has so much to offer, so where should you start? Never fear, here’s our recommendations of what’s good to see and do in and around Auckland for the short time you’re here.
Morning no better way to start 8.30 There’s your stay in the City of Sails than
am
heading out on the water. Take a Fullers Ferry (buy a return ticket, the journey lasts 12 minutes and departs every half hour) to the charming seaside village of Devonport. As you approach Devonport, look out to the twin hills, these are Mt Victoria and North Head, if you were to spend a day here, you could climb them and explore the First World War bunkers hidden in the hills. Enjoy a coffee at Manuka, then browse the wares of the boutique shops. Phone 09 367 9111. www.fullers.co.nz

central Auckland – look towards the city and the Sky Tower. This afternoon you may just get a feeling for exactly how high it is! Next, just sit back and enjoy a personalised three hour tour with Toru Tours, showing you the highlights of what makes this city of Auckland so special. From the diverse eateries to the many volcanoes, to the working farm and the beautiful gardens, you’ll get a real insight into the City of Sails. Enjoy being shown around Auckland’s best shopping, cuisine and sights. You’ll also learn about Maori culture and settler history along the way. Phone: 0274 570011. www.torutours.com

Tower, 182 metres above the hustle and bustle of Auckland city, and get a true 360 degree view with not even a handrail between you and the view? Or take a leap of adventure and jump off the edge? You can do both with SkyWalk and SkyJump packages. The friendly crew will make sure you have the time of your life, and provide photos so you can show what a daredevil you are. Afterwards, you can toast your courage and the views at the Sky Lounge. Can you find the white building on a hill to the east? That is the Auckland

Auckland may be a marine playground, but it also is home to some significant heritage;
catch the green Link bus (adult fares $1.90) to Parnell, and ask the driver to stop near the Auckland War Memorial Museum — the cultural and spiritual touchstone for New Zealanders. The Museum is also the first stop for anyone wishing to gain an insight into New Zealand and its people. Within the neoclassical building priceless Maori treasures, amazing natural history, daily Maori cultural performances, and an ever-changing feast of local and international exhibitions (see page 15) are to be explored and enjoyed. Evening Return to the city, and back to 5.30 the waterfront; head towards pm
one of Auckland’s newest dining precincts, the wonderful Wynyard Quarter. Discover the best of fresh cuisine at the water’s edge – with 10 bars and eateries in an authentic working wharf setting. Watch as yachts and sailboats return to or leave the harbour. In the warmer months, this area hosts night markets and an outdoor cinema. New Zealand is famed for our delicious seafood, so head to Live Fish Seafood Restaurant, where you can select your dinner from a live tank and be assured that you’ll receive the freshest seafood on to your table. remaining Atmospheric Theatres in the world will wow you. Built in 1929, The Civic is designed to evoke a Moorish garden at night, with turrets, minarets, spires and tiled roofs and two guardian Abyssinian Panther statues. When Broadway shows or big-time dance performances come to town, they are often staged at The Civic. If you’re lucky, you may even get tickets to An Evening with Julie Andrews on June 5 (see page 12) where you’ll get to find out more about this legendary actress’s extraordinary life story in an informal audience Q&A session with unseen film clips. Have coffee and cake at the café outside before heading into the night scene (we suggest Freddy’s Ice House (see page 19) (Princes Wharf, 201 Quay Street for chilled times) or back to your welcoming room at your accommodation. Auckland has plenty of great beauty salons and spas where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself thoroughly pampered. So make the most of the many options available and take the time to spend on yourself. Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many treatment available; enjoy a relaxing facial treatment or invigorating massage, or why not give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak and a pedicure. For some real indulgence, lie back and relax and enjoy an aromatic full body polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering together. Top up your tan in safety at one of Auckland solariums, or give yourself the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliating treatment. If you find yourself short of time to get to a salon, consider a mobile beauty clinic that will come to you – so you can enjoy a treatment in the comfort of your own room. Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.
Relax and enjoy a blissful hot stone massage, an aromatic full body polish or body wrap.

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments to friendly backpacker hostels; from bright and buzzy city centre to green and charming suburbs, or meeting rooms conveniently close to the airport, Auckland has room for you. Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how an accommodation property has been independently rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the room – inspection should be welcome. Hotels generally offer tea/coffee making facilities, a bathroom and an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually offer self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fixed budget, try some of the backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities. The regional parks are another good alternative, providing camping in a more peaceful rural setting. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To find out more, visit jasons.co.nz/auckland/accommodation.

Driving in NZ The official New Zealand Road Code guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations. Road Rules New Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a moving vehicle car to wear a seatbelt. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffic laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.
Tips for Safe Driving • Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care not to exceed the signed speed limits as fines can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor. • Winding roads, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200– 300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions. • Ringing bells and flashing red lights at a railway crossing signal that a train is coming. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care especially at crossings not controlled by barrier arms.

Being home to over a third of New Zealand’s population, Auckland is so much more than a bright-light-big-city centre. This wildly varied region really does have it all. Here’s a few of the character-filled spots on the outskirts and outlying districts of Auckland. Auckland’s Inner Suburbs Mission Bay Just a short, picturesque drive (or bus ride) from the CBD along Auckland’s beautiful waterfront, Mission Bay is a favourite hang-out spot for Aucklanders and visitors alike. With a long golden beach and thriving café scene, this is the place to take a gentle stroll along the Promenade and enjoy an ice-cream as you people watch. Ponsonby Ponsonby Road is one of Auckland’s more boutique shopping areas, lined with great cafés, restaurants, designer stores and hairdressers. It’s popular with weekend brunchers and evening scenesters. Newmarket South of the CBD is Newmarket, where the very best in fashion, style and design are celebrated ever day.
Muriwai ©Lisa Robinson
Parnell One of Auckland’s more popular shopping areas, the colonial-style buildings house a range of specialty and boutique shops, and there are stacks of great cafés and restaurants.
The wild west coast beaches of Piha, Muriwai, Whatipu and Karekare offer dramatic coastal walks and great surfing.

Mt Eden Hugging the base of the iconic Mt Eden (where you can look down into a cavernous crater), Mt Eden village is another quaint shopping spot. The gift and curio shops contain all sorts of unusual items and it’s a popular brunch area at the weekend. Devonport This seaside village, 12 minutes from the city centre, is of special interest for curio and souvenir hunters, with its galleries, craft and antique shops. There are shops in the complex at Devonport Wharf, along with several cafés offering great seaviews. Takapuna This North Shore suburb combines the best of both worlds. A magnificently long golden sand beach with easy access for boaties, fantastic shopping and busy eating and drinking establishments. Residents here are known for being justifiably proud of their laid-back lifestyle.
Around Greater Auckland Hauraki Gulf Islands Auckland’s Gulf Islands are an extension of the city’s marine playground. The best-known is Rangitoto, with its landmark volcanic cone providing spectacular views of Auckland. Nearby Waiheke Island is a popular holiday resort famous for its arts and crafts and awardwinning wineries. Tiritiri Matangi is home to a bird sanctuary, while at Kawau Island, visitors can tour Mansion House, the stately residence of New Zealand’s former Governor, Sir George Grey. Further out, Great Barrier Island offers unspoilt beaches, native bush, historic logging and mining remains and natural hot pools. North Shore Across the Harbour Bridge is Auckland’s North Shore, an area known for its relaxed lifestyle, beautiful beaches and views across the Hauraki Gulf. Takapuna, with its tree-lined high street, is the main shopping area. Historic Devonport is renowned for its waterfront cafés, antique stores and art and craft shops. A regular ferry service (12 minutes) departs for Devonport from the Ferry Building on Quay Street. East Auckland Located about 20 kilometres from the city centre are Auckland’s well-kept eastern suburbs. Boaties love this area with its easy access to the sea and there is an excellent marina facility at Half Moon Bay, and several safe swimming beaches. The Howick Historical Village is located at Pakuranga, with restored historic buildings, including fencible cottages. West Auckland In the west, Waitakere is renowned for its lush bush, stunning coastline, market gardens and wineries. Titirangi Village has a lively arts and crafts scene, while the bush-clad Waitakere Ranges are one of Auckland’s scenic gems, with extensive walking trails through native bush. The wild west coast beaches of Piha, Muriwai, Whatipu and Karekare (where the opening scenes of the movie The Piano were filmed) offer dramatic coastal walks and great surfing.

South Auckland Manukau is New Zealand’s youngest and fastest growing hub, and contains the Jean Batten Auckland International Airport. It has a vibrant Maori and Pacific Island heritage, reflected in its Polynesian markets, and is one of the country’s largest shopping centres. Local attractions include the Rainbow’s End Theme Park and the Auckland Regional Botanic Garden, which offers pleasant walking trails through native and exotic flora. Franklin District South of Manukau lies Franklin District, with rolling farmland, boutique vineyards and country towns, including the villages of Pukekohe, Waiuku and Clevedon. The rugged Hunua Ranges are a scenic highlight and a popular recreational area for Aucklanders, with picnic facilities, waterfalls, streams and walking trails through the bush to nearby dams. Rodney North of Auckland, the main highway to Whangarei traverses Rodney County, a scenic region with bush-clad hills and rolling farmland. Historic settlements, including the tiny Bohemian settlement of Puhoi, and several thriving vineyards add interest. Beautiful coastline borders much of the area. Hibiscus Coast On Auckland’s back doorstep, this region’s main centre is the beach resort of Orewa, with its magnificent long, sandy beach. Along Whangaparaoa Peninsula is the Gulf Harbour Marina, which accesses the open bird sanctuary of Tiritiri Matangi Island, with beautiful Shakespear Regional Park at its end. Matakana Coast The historic village of Warkworth is the hub of the Matakana Coast, extending from Wenderholm in the south to the white sands of Pakiri Beach. Attractions include Goat Island, New Zealand’s first marine reserve, Kawau Island, Pakiri Beach and Sheep World. Te Hana, near Wellsford and the Dome Forest, is a place to stop and get acquainted with Maori culture and heritage.
