24 hours in Auckland
You’ve arrived in one of the world’s most liveable cities, but you only have 24 hours, or less, to visit? Auckland’s vibrant city style and marine playground has so much to offer, so where should you start? Never fear, here’s our recommendations of what’s good to see and do in and around Auckland for the short time you’re here.
Morning
There’s no better way to start 8.30 am your stay in the City of Sails
than heading out on the water. Take a Fullers Ferry to the
charming seaside village of Devonport (buy a return ticket, the journey lasts 12 minutes and departs every half hour). As you approach Devonport, look out to the twin hills, these are Mt Victoria and North Head. If you were to spend a day here, you could climb them and explore the First World War bunkers hidden in the hills. Have a coffee at Manuka, then browse the wares of the boutique shops. Phone 09 367 9111. www.fullers.co.nz
spend a couple hours exploring 10.30 am New Zealand’s largest Head to iconic MOTAT and
transport, technology and social history museum. There are free vintage
tram rides, a mirror maze and historical village, plus an extensive collection of objects telling stories about New Zealand’s aviation, printing, rail, road transport, steam and military. MOTAT is open every day of the week from 10am until 5pm. Phone: 0800 MOTATNZ (0800 668 286). www.motat.org.nz
Afternoon time to get a little bit out 1.00 It’s of your comfort zone, so what
pm
will you do? Walk the edge of the
Sky Tower, 182 metres above the hustle and bustle of Auckland city, and get a true 360-degree view with not even a handrail between you and the view. Or take a leap of adventure and jump off the edge. You can do both with SkyWalk and SkyJump packages. The friendly crew will make sure you have the time of your life, and provide photos so you can show what a daredevil you are. Afterwards, indulge in some lunch at one of the Sky Tower’s many restaurants, such as the Sky Lounge. Phone 0800 SKYCITY. www.skycityauckland.co.nz
3.00
Auckland is a marine playground and what better way to pm experience it all than at the Voyager Maritime Museum, home to stories, ambition, courage and exploration. Discover New Zealand’s relationship with the sea and see how this has shaped our nation’s identity. Take a look at one of the exhibitions and explore our diverse maritime history, or experience Auckland’s stunning Waitemata Harbour aboard a heritage sailing vessel. Phone: 09 737 0800. www.maritimemuseum.co.nz
Evening to 68 Parnell Road in the 6.00 Head suburb of Parnell, close to the
pm city, where you’ll find the newly opened Thai Chef’s Restaurant.
Taste authentic Thai dishes prepared fresh in relaxed surroundings. Bring your friends along and experience dining family style. Seating is available for up to 18 people in a private function area if you have a larger group. The chain of Thai Chef’s restaurants recently received the Thai Select Premium award, which certifies that the food, service and atmosphere is authentic and rated five stars for excellence. North Head: Guns,
View from North Head

North Head is a volcanic cone and public reserve in the suburb of Devonport. Its interesting history, mysterious underground tunnels and sweeping views have made it one of Auckland’s best attractions. North Head was formed over 50,000 years ago in a series of great explosions. The volcanic soils and rich marine environment attracted early Maori settlers, and early photographs of the area show that they used to work gardens on the hill’s lower slopes. European visitors in the 1850s described a settlement at the foot of the hill with gardens and racks for drying fish. Auckland’s tangible war history is thankfully thin, but from the 1870s, there was a growing fear that the Russians were planning attacks on the country’s ports, known as the “Russian Fears”. Three large gun batteries were built, and while no attack eventuated, by the 1900s North Head was well defended with three Disappearing Guns as its main armament. During WW2, North Head served as the main administrative centre for Auckland coastal defences.
Spooky: North Head has inspired many stories about secret tunnels, buried airplanes, and lost ammunition, including a story of two soldiers in uniform seen standing guard above one of the gun turret entrances, looking into the distance towards Rangitoto Island, then fading and disappearing.

tunnels and views
By the end of the 1950s, the army left and North Head became a reserve in the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park. Exploring the tunnels, gun emplacements and old buildings has become a popular activity for visitors to North Head. The remaining Disappearing Gun has been restored and returned to ceremonial firing condition, and the 1885 stone kitchen has been converted into a theatre, which plays a short film on the history of North Head. The grassy slopes of the hill offer excellent picnic spots with widespread views over the city, harbour and islands of the Hauraki Gulf. For some extra fun for the kids, let them have a go at grass surfing – use a flattened cardboard box and glide down the hillside. Department of Conservation has a selfguided walking brochure that you can pick up. The walk to the summit can be challenging but rewarding. A track around the base of North Head passes among a rocky ledge to a small, secluded beach before heading down to Cheltenham Beach.

Auckland has plenty of great beauty salons and spas where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself thoroughly pampered. So make the most of the many options available and take the time to spend on yourself. Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many treatments available; enjoy a relaxing facial or invigorating massage, or why not give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak and a pedicure. For some real indulgence, lie back and relax and enjoy an aromatic fullbody polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering together. Top up your tan in safety at one of Auckland’s solariums, or give yourself the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliation. If you find yourself short of time to get to a salon, consider a mobile beauty clinic that will come to you – so you can enjoy a pampering in the comfort of your own room. Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.
Relax and enjoy a blissful hot stone massage, an aromatic full body polish or body wrap.

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments to friendly backpacker hostels; from the bright and buzzy city centre to green and charming suburbs, or meeting rooms conveniently close to the airport, Auckland has room for you. Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how an accommodation property has been independently rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the room – inspection should be welcome. Hotels generally offer tea/coffee making facilities, a bathroom and an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually offer self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fixed budget, try some of the backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities. The regional parks are another good alternative, providing camping in a more peaceful rural setting. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To find out more, visit jasons.co.nz/auckland/accommodation.

Get your bearings and your adrenalin pumping in the central city by leaping off the Sky Tower, or test your vertigo by walking round its outside ledge at just 1.2m wide. Browse Auckland Art Gallery’s extensive collection of more than 15,000 artworks. Alternatively, take a stroll to the city’s Domain and find out more about New Zealand’s history and its people at Auckland’s War Memorial Museum. Auckland’s central waterfront has extended as a place to meet, do business and relax. The popular Viaduct area used to be the only place to be seen; now there are numerous waterfront locations to wine and dine. From the Britomart precinct to Wynyard Quarter, you’ll find affordable, tasty fare and spectacular sea views. Mission Bay is a short, picturesque drive (or bus ride) from the city along Auckland’s stunning waterfront. Stroll along its long golden beach then grab an icecream or fish and chips to refuel. Parnell’s colonial-style shops specialise in locally-made crafts, ranging from designer jewellery, pounamu (New Zealand jade) and clothing to paintings, glass-work and sculpture. If that’s not enough to satisfy your shopping fix, head to the neighbouring suburb of Newmarket and explore its designer fashion stores.

Head west and explore Waitakere’s lush native bush, enjoy a stroll on the wild black sand beaches or relax in one of the wineries. Shuttle services run daily from central Auckland to the West Coast beaches. If you have your own transport, make a pit-stop in Titirangi village for a coffee, and perhaps even catch the Titirangi Village Market (last Sunday of the month) at Titirangi War Memorial Hall from 10am until 2pm. Continue west along Scenic Drive to Arataki Visitor Centre, the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, which covers more than 16,000 hectares of native rainforest and coastline. Packed with fascinating exhibits, the visitor centre alone could keep you entertained for hours, but if you’re keen to stretch your legs there’s over 250km of walking trails to choose from. Tracks start directly from the centre, with a wide range of others just a short drive away. Try Fair Falls track, or explore Cascade Kauri Park, located in the heart of the Ark in the Park conservation project.
