Haere Mai Welcome to Christchurch & the Canterbury region. Whether you’ve arrived by car or emerged blinking into the light after 30 hours on a plane, Christchurch offers you a warm welcome. Despite several major earthquakes that rattled Canterbury in 2010 and 2011, the region has definitely picked itself up again. On the road to recovery, Cantabrians have found innovative and fun ways for you to shop, eat, drink and play in the Garden City. Keep your copy of Christchurch & Canterbury What’s On close at hand as you explore the city; check what’s happening in the events calendar and get your bearings with the easy-to-use maps.
Christchurch at a Glance Sumner A Christchurch favourite: Sumner is a cosy beachside village where you can stroll along the promenade and peruse the menus of the many fine dining establishments. Brighton Another lovely seaside suburb, Brighton invites you to swim or surf its patrolled waters, or stroll the length of the famous pier. At the pier’s end, you’ll often find families enjoying a relaxed spot of fishing. Banks Peninsula & Akaroa The fist-like peninsular south of Christchurch has a varied and interesting history; formed by a volcanic eruption eight million years ago, the scenic grandeur of the landscape was a base for the Ngai Tahu tribe, then sold in 1838 to a French whaling captain, but was declared as British territory in 1840 before an official French envoy could claim it. However, the pretty settlement of Akaroa retains its French flavour.
Lyttelton Over the Port Hills, southeast from Christchurch CBD, the Lyttelton township invites you to immerse yourself in this hub of arts and culture. Enjoy dinner at one of the wonderful restaurants serving local fare, and watch the sun set over beautiful Lyttelton harbour. Lyttelton’s farmers’ market on Saturdays is a foodie’s delight. Exploring Canterbury Experience the wider Canterbury region with everything from Hanmer’s luxurious hot springs, white-knuckle rafting, hot air ballooning, skiing (July to October), swimming with dolphins, whalewatching, premium wineries and the mountains of Arthur’s Pass and Mount Cook/Aoraki national parks – all easily accessible within hours of Christchurch.

Christchurch is often referred to as the gateway to the South Island, and Canterbury can be considered the heart and soul of the South Island. Christchurch has always been known as a city that enjoys its cuisine. When the earthquakes struck, these two favourite dining institutions shook themselves off and re-envisioned how they would be able to serve up the tastiest food from the region.
Dux Dine and Dux Live Pre-quake, Dux de Lux was the iconic venue known for offering fantastic live local and international music and superb seafood and vegetarian food to feed the body and the mind. Post-quake, the Dux brand has risen again and with a vengeance – and now in two venues. Dux Dine offers the best seafood and vegetarian cuisine using the best locally sourced produce, and all components of each dish are carefully produced in-house by a dedicated kitchen brigade. Housed in a historic villa on Riccarton Road, the refurbishment has been meticulously thought out to present the sense of a homely and inviting environment for all ages. Dux Live is a purpose-built live music venue that local and international performers have stated as being ‘the best venue in New Zealand’, enabling them to play ‘the best show ever’! Of course, the people who attend the gigs play a huge part in such an evening, and you’ll be sure to find a warm and buzzy atmosphere at Christchurch’s home of live music. Five nights a week you’ll hear live music from across all genres at Dux Live, and often the shows are free to the public. Pedro’s House of Lamb This iconic restaurant was battered by the earthquake, but didn’t let that get in the way of turning quality export New Zealand lamb into high-class (and succulent) takeaways. Pedro’s Restaurant was one of those places in Christchurch that everyone knew and loved. Originally established in 1980, by chef and owner Pedro Carazo, it was situated in the heart of the city and renowned for serving only the best traditional Spanish dishes. The Christchurch dining institution‘s success was credited to the fresh ingredients, vibrant Spanish atmosphere and the big personalities of its owners. A new situation meant Pedro’s Restaurant, like many Christchurch businesses, needed to adapt and evolve. Permanent building space was in short supply and building new premises could mean being out of business for several years. So Pedro’s adapted. Setting up a modular container in the suburb of Merivale, the restaurant turned their much-loved Paletilla al Horno (whole lamb shoulder baked with rosemary and garlic) into a premium takeaway product. Pedro’s House Of Lamb exclusively use only export quality New Zealand lamb shoulders. Weighing between 1kg to 1.2kg, the lamb is cooked very slowly over four to five hours. The shoulder is served accompanied by roasted scalloped potatoes. 17b Papanui Road, Christchurch Ph 03 387 0707 Opening hours: Tue–Sat: 4–8pm Sun: 12–8pm

From pristine ski fields of the Southern Alps, to the expansive farmed flatlands of the Canterbury Plains, whether you’re looking for snow sports, seaside villages, alpine hot springs or braided rivers, this region is packed with adventure and leisure activities. While staying in Christchurch, you’ll get a better idea of the people of Canterbury, a determined bunch who like to take up challenges, and have claimed many New Zealand (and world) firsts. In South Canterbury at the beginning of the 20th century it is said that the first powered flight occurred a year before that of the Wright brothers; Bill Hamilton conceived of and perfected jetboating, Sir Ernest Rutherford was educated in Christchurch before going on to split the atom and be awarded New Zealand’s first Nobel Prize; Aoraki/ Mt Cook was Sir Edmund Hillary’s training ground before he summited Mt Everest; and Lyttelton was the final departure point for many historic Antarctic explorers like Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shakleton. You, of course, can follow in their footsteps. Visit the Air Force Museum in Christchurch or pay homage to an airbourne innovator in Timaru; take a thrilling jetboat ride; learn about natural sciences at the Canterbury museum or understand what life was like in the Edwardian era at Ferrymead; be awed by the might and beauty of Aoraki/Mt Cook (ski it from July–October) and chat with penguins as you learn about life on the ice at the Antarctic Experience. Perhaps you’d prefer a soak in an alpine thermal resort, or the quiet ambience of a visit to a sun-drenched winery. Maybe you’d like to glimpse one of the world’s rarest dolphins or be impressed by a Sumatran tiger at an open range zoo; whatever experience you seek, in Christchurch and Canterbury you’ll find everything you need to create a memorable holiday. Iconic department stores, pop-up shops, a mall made out of shipping containers, a variety of unique designer boutiques and bustling farmers’ and craft markets - Christchurch has all the ingredients for a fantastic shopping spree. How often do you get to shop in shipping containers? When the central-city businesses were affected by the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, Christchurch had to find a new way to shop. Re:START in Cashel Mall is the architecturally-designed shopping precinct made out of brightly coloured shipping containers. Banks Peninsula

Lyttelton & Akaroa Millions of years ago, two volcanoes blew apart, creating Banks Peninsula, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Today, the harbours of Lyttelton and Akaroa fill their craters. Just over an hour from Christchurch, Akaroa is the peninsula’s romantic centre, where French settlers were the first Europeans to arrive. The distinctly Gallic flavour remains in street names like Rue Jolie and Rue Lavaud, colonial architecture, waterfront cafés, a number of much sought-after wines, and speciality cheeses from Barry’s Bay. Akaroa celebrated its heritage in October 2013 with its biannual French Festival, but visitors can appreciate it every day of the year, with excellent cafés and gourmet restaurants lining the harbourside. Visit a lavender farm or winery, opt for a cruise on the harbour, or swim with Hector’s dolphins, the world’s rarest dolphin. With its stands of original native bush, seal colonies and nesting penguins, Banks Peninsula is ideal for exploring on foot, whether for an hour or two, or over several days on the southern Banks Peninsula Track. Getting there: Buses run daily, including scenic day trips. Follow SH 75 from Christchurch, through Little River and over Hilltop to Akaroa. The road over Hilltop is steep and windy. A comfortable 1.5 hours, distance 85km. The coffee stop at Little River is obligatory.

Mackenzie Country
The Mackenzie Country towns of Fairlie, Tekapo and Twizel provide the base for many more outdoor activities. The region’s lakes offer windsurfing, sailing and superb fishing, while on land you’ll find mountain and heli-biking, rock climbing and hiking. The area is also world-renowned as a gliding destination where many world records have been set. Getting there: Daily buses run to the region’s major towns. From Fairlie, follow Route 8 through Burke’s Pass village, over the pass and into the MacKenzie Basin and Tekapo. Distance 226km to Tekapo, 3–3.5 hours.
© Tracie Percival
To appreciate the region’s true scale and grandeur, experience it from the air in a scenic flight around Aoraki/Mt Cook. Aoraki means ‘cloud piercer’ and at 3754m, the Maori title is perfect for New Zealand’s tallest mountain. Mt Cook National Park offers the entire range of alpine activity mountaineering, glacier exploration, tramping, heli-skiing and ski-touring, including guided skiing on the Tasman glacier.
© Chen, Hung Chou
Named after James MacKenzie, a 19th century sheep rustler, the Mackenzie Country fills Canterbury’s southwest corner, and lies in the shadow of Aoraki/Mt Cook. With a number of major hydro dams, the region is the powerhouse of New Zealand.

Kaikoura Kaikoura sits on a rugged peninsula midway between Christchurch to the south and Picton to the north. The Inland and Seaward Kaikoura ranges form a staggering backdrop to the town, sandwiched between the mountains and the sea. Waves rolling in from the deep ocean throw up some of New Zealand’s most consistent surf. Kaikoura’s rich history is tied to the sea. In Maori legend, Maui braced himself with a foot on the peninsula as he ‘fished up’ the North Island. Today, you can find several pa here, the remains of early Maori settlement. The first European settlers established whaling stations along this coastline, but today Kaikoura is a safe haven for the ocean’s largest creatures. Learn more about Kaikoura’s early history at Fyffe House, the area’s first whaler’s cottage, and at the Kaikoura Museum.

Marine life: Not far offshore, the seabed falls steeply away into the 2000m deep Hikorangi Trench, bringing an abundance of marine life, including several whale species, within a few kilometres of the coast. Sperm whales live in these waters year round. See these majestic animals from the air or sea, as well as humpback, pilot, blue whales and orca at different times of the year.

Swim with dolphins: Kaikoura is home to Dusky dolphins, and the rare Hector’s dolphin. Many people rate swimming with these enchanting creatures as one of their best experiences ever, and a magical memory of New Zealand. New Zealand fur seals have a colony on the peninsula and magnificent seabirds like the albatross and petrel live here. Kaikoura’s waters also offer surfing, diving and fishing while its premium restaurants are filled with ocean-fresh seafood. In Maori, Kaikoura means ‘meal of crayfish’, and crayfish is the local delicacy. Getting there: Buses run daily. TranzCoastal train runs Christchurch to Picton via Kaikoura. Follow SH1 north through Amberley and Cheviot. 2.5 – 3 hours, distance 180km. Stunning coastal scenery beyond Cheviot.
The Hurunui With adventure, wine and thermal waters, the Hurunui district stretches to the northwest of Christchurch, and holds many of Canterbury’s jewels. Some, like Hanmer Springs, enjoy an international reputation, but there are other hidden gems to discover – like the surfing beaches of Gore Bay, hiking and horse trekking in Lake Sumner Forest Park, and the bountiful salmon and trout of the Hurunui River.

Alpine Canterbury
Arthur’s Pass National Park Roaring waterfalls, deep ravines, craggy rock faces and braided rivers, all combine to give this spectacular national park an unmistakable mountain feel. European explorers learnt of the pass from Maori who crossed regularly from Westland to Canterbury to trade pounamu (greenstone). Early pioneers built the road in less than a year when the West Coast gold rush struck. Its steep country and network of backcountry huts is a haven for hikers, with overnight and multi-day trekking options. Shorter walks of one to two hours take you into magnificent terrain and afford spectacular mountain views, especially the dramatic Devil’s Punchbowl waterfall walk. Strong shoes are essential, and take a jacket, as even in summer the weather can change without warning. Look out for the kea - the cheeky green mountain parrot native to New Zealand; if you leave your boots outside then expect to lose your laces. Getting there: Shuttles run daily. TranzAlpine train – spectacular in spring. Arthur’s Pass is on SH 73 on the main road to Greymouth and the West Coast. A comfortable two hours. Distance 150km. The road through Porter’s Pass and Arthur’s Pass is steep and windy. Can be icy and may require chains in the winter months.

Christchurch Suburbs
Jasons Maps
Surrounded by the Cashmere Hills, Christchurch is the South Island’s largest city, but there is more to explore than the tree-lined Avon River, gorgeous parks, and re-building inner city. Although no longer a red zoned area, the cordon on the central Christchurch CBD imposed after the earthquake has seen the outlying suburbs come to life, catering more expansively to the needs of international visitors and locals alike.
