Haere Mai Welcome to Great Lake Taupō –nature’s ultimate playground. Whatever you want to do in the great outdoors you’ll find it here in this region of dramatic natural landscapes. Great Lake Taupō, Nature's Ultimate Playground, boasts ancient forests, thermal water features, volcanoes, massive caldera craters such as Lake Taupō - the largest freshwater lake in Australasia - and the mountains and snowfields of Tongariro National Park. Tongariro is one of the world’s oldest national parks and one of very few with dual World Heritage status. Skiing, snowboarding, climbing, hiking, white water rafting or mountain biking; leaping into open space with a parachute or a bungy, netting a rainbow trout, golfing on a championship course, soaking in a hot pool or relaxing with a wine at a waterfront café – it’s your choice. Keep your copy of Jasons Great Lake Taupō What’s On Guide handy to help you scout out the best things to see and do, and the best places to stay, eat and shop, along with all the exciting events that happen in this dynamic region.

Great Lake Taupō at a Glance This spectacular region sits high on the Central Plateau in the centre of the North Island, easily accessible via State Highway One and just a few hours drive from all of the North Island’s major cities. Taupō, the main township and one of New Zealand’s most popular holiday destinations, sits pretty on the northern shores of Lake Taupō. On the lake’s southern shores is the township of Turangi, home of white water rafting, world-class trout fishing and the gateway to the skifields, snow climbing routes and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. To the west you’ll discover native forests, mountain bike trails, farms, hydro lakes and peaceful Mangakino village.

Regional Overview

This holiday town really knows how to turn it on for visitors. From adrenalin-pumping adventure to laid-back relaxation, recreation choices are simply inspiring. Since the beginning it’s been nature’s drama, volcanic upheaval and geothermal forces that have attracted people to what is now one of New Zealand’s most popular holiday destinations. The massive caldera crater, blasted from one of the world’s largest volcanic eruptions, now forms the great lake that people come to cruise, fish, walk or bike beside or simply admire. Mineral springs and geothermal steam have also long drawn travellers and settlers alike, be they the first Maori people, Tuwharetoa, seeking therapeutic bathing, or later engineers harnessing geothermal power for the national grid. For early waka (canoe)-travelling Maori, the mighty Waikato River and Lake Taupō itself provided much-used transport routes. Now Taupō sits on the junction of major state highways, cars replacing waka, and is easily accessible from all North Island towns and cities. It’s not just a tourist town, however, Taupō is also a major shopping and service centre for farming, forestry and hydro power settlements throughout the region.

©Destination Great Lake Taupō

In earlier times, hot pools and the lake were the essential holiday attractions. As the town’s popularity has grown, so too have the choices of things to do, no matter what the season.

However active or inactive you chose to be, you will want to soak in a hot thermal pool. Be it a big pool shared with family and friends, private tub, natural hot pool in the bush, or a thermal mud wrap and massage at a health spa, healing waters are part of the Taupō holiday tradition, especially after an energetic day carving up the ski slopes during the winter. Did we mention events? Barely a weekend goes by when there isn’t something extra going on. Each year thousands flock to Lake Taupō for events such as Graffiato, the Street Art Festival. On other weekends you’ll spot hundreds, if not thousands of runners and riders challenging themselves on the myriad of endurance and family fun events that explore the region’s scenic off road trails. Then there’s kapa haka, celebrating Maori culture and dance, plus equestrian events, motorsport and other art and musical events.

Highlights • C atch the iconic and thundering action of Huka Falls and Aratiatia Rapids. The Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest river, churns through a narrow chasm at Huka Falls, the country’s most visited natural attraction. For more ‘rapid action’ head a little further down river and watch the Aratiatia Rapids surge free when the hydro dam opens each day. (10am, 12pm and 4pm autumn/ winter; 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm spring/summer).

Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary ©Destination Great Lake Taupō

• G et those legs working; bike or walk the allweather trails and explore native bush and sweet smelling pine forests, waterfalls and thermal springs and great views of mountains, lakes and rivers. There are more than 200km of trails around Taupō, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Trail maps are available at the local i-SITE and bike shops.

GreatLakeTaupo.com

• Tee off. The Taupō region is blessed with seven golf courses, from the Jack Nicklaus-signature Kinloch Club and conservation showpiece Wairakei Golf Course and Sanctuary, to local club links and casual nine hole courses. There’s even a ‘hole in one’ challenge on the lake front.

Wairakei Thermal Hot Pools ©Destination Great Lake Taupō

• Soak in a hot mineral pool, the perfect end to an action-packed day on the slopes. Choose from aquatic playground fun for the whole family, private pools or hydrotherapy spa treatments; or book accommodation that treats guests with their very own thermal hot pools.

Craters of the Moon ©Destination Great Lake Taupō

• Smell the flowers. You don’t have to hike into the forests or mountains to see our native plants, you’ll find many of them in Taupō’s nationally-acclaimed Ora Garden of Wellbeing and 85-acre botanical reserve. More floral delights can be found at the Rose Gardens in the Taupo town centre. • Feel the restless earth. Today’s tranquil Lake Taupō was created by the world’s largest recorded volcanic eruption; forming dramatic landscapes; steaming cliffs, geysers and bubbling mud pools. Visit one of the region’s lively geothermal sites, or learn more at the interactive Volcanic Activity Centre.

• Get on the lake or above it – how is entirely up to you! Try sipping a wine on a scenic cruise, dangling a lure behind a fishing boat or paddling your own kayak; or you could soar above the lake on a scenic flight or tandem skydive.

©Destination Great Lake Taupō

• C atch sunset on the lakefront. Snuggle beside a roaring fire in a waterfront bar, sip a craft beer and watch the snowy mountains across the lake take on a rosy hue.

Trout Fishing in Turangi ©Destination Great Lake Taupō

Turangi

Regional Overview

14

Nestled on the southern shores of Lake Taupō is worldfamous fishing town, Turangi. However there’s much more to do here than net that big brown or rainbow trout. White-water rafting the pristine, forest-lined Tongariro River headwaters (they’ll suit you up to thwart the cold), or walking or biking beside its less turbulent lower reaches. Turangi, the gateway to Tongariro National Park and Kaimanawa Forest Park, welcomes holidaymakers in all seasons. In winter, most adventurers will head to the snow for skiing, snowboarding or a climbing challenge. At lower altitudes there’s a wealth of opportunity; hiking, hunting, mountain biking, gentle bush walking, bird watching, rafting or fishing, whatever you fancy. Nearby is historic Tokaanu village, long famous for its thermal pools and geothermal features. It’s also a pleasant spot for some gentle kayaking on Tokaanu Stream, or a short climb for great lake views from the top of Maungamanu.

©Destination Great Lake Taupō

Cultural sites to explore reflect this region’s rich heritage. Rotoaira is the birthplace of the famous Te Rauparaha haka, Kamate Kamate. Te Porere Redoubt is the well-preserved defensive site of Maori leader Te Kooti, and Waihi Village the home of Horonuku Te Heu Heu Tukino IV, who gifted the sacred mountain peaks, now the nucleus of Tongariro National Park, to the Crown.

GreatLakeTaupo.com

Turangi is considered Great Lake Taupō’s hidden gem.

• Feed wild trout at the Tongariro National Trout Centre, a fun-filled learning opportunity about freshwater ecology. Watch wild trout from the underwater viewing chamber, a highlight on the riverside walk. Check the museum- full of fishy tales, take a picnic and a bush walk. Hey kids, it’s free for you (your parents need to pay a small amount). • Get hissed and bubbled at on the Tokaanu Thermal Walk, a free and easy (wheelchair accessible) 20-minute bush path beside spluttering mud and steaming springs. Then soak in the adjacent Tokaanu Thermal Pools. • Whether fishing, biking, walking or spotting rare birds is your fancy, head to the Tongariro River Trail. On this riverside loop (1 or 3 hour options) you’ll see famous fishing pools and maybe a pair of rare native blue duck. • Tackle the Vertical Assault indoor climbing wall, 26 routes up a 14 metre vertical climb in the Turangi town centre. • Go fishing! Specialised fishing shops and experienced guides can help you discover the best fly fishing or trolling spots in this famous fishing region. • Catch some white water rafting thrills. Brave the Grade 3 rapids in the pristine Tongariro headwaters, or splash about on a ‘funyak’ closer to town. Winter doesn’t stop this adventure. WAIPAHIHI TI

16 Mt Ruapehu/Tongariro National Park

Dominating the central North Island landscape are the volcanic peaks of Mount Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. These are the mountains of Tongariro National Park, one of the world’s oldest national parks and one of the few with dual, natural and cultural, World Heritage status. From Taupō it is little more than an hours’ drive to the ski-fields and the starting point of the incredibly popular Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The mountains are a magnet for hikers, skiers, snowboarders, climbers, and for those who simply appreciate nature and the unique volcanic landforms - and yes, these are still active volcanoes! The landscapes of Tongariro and Ruapehu are indeed diverse; snowy peaks and ice cliffs, alpine tarns and tussocks, native forests and wind-blown deserts and, everywhere, the overwhelming volcanic presence; steaming rocks and crater lakes, silica springs and towering lava cliffs.

Tongariro National Park ©Destination Great Lake Taupo

At lower altitudes the Ruapehu region is a mosaic of greens; of farmland and production pine forests, traversed by mountain bike and quad biking trails for those seeking off road adventure.

Mangakino

Regional Overview

18

This peaceful village nestled beside Lake Maraetai, a hydro lake surrounded by forest and rolling farmland is less than an hour from bustling Taupō. Whether you’re seeking tranquillity or outdoor adventure, you’ll be happy in this rural spot. Maraetai and neighbouring Lake Whakamaru were formed by two hydro dams across the Waikato River. These massive concrete structures are worth a look in their own right. The lakes make happy aquatic playgrounds; paddle a kayak at your leisure or launch your own boat for family fun. Cycle trails are popular all around this region and Mangakino is no exception. It’s the midway point of the 100km Waikato River Trail that follows New Zealand’s longest river, past five hydro lakes and five dams. The trail is a mix of easy to more challenging grades.

Pureora Forest Park ©Destination Great Lake Taupō

Some of the grandest native trees in the country grow near Mangakino, in Pureora Forest Park. Ecologist David Bellamy likened them to the grand cathedrals of Europe. In the 1970s tree-climbing protesters forced the end of logging of these magnificent trees. Check out the bush walks beneath towering Totara, Rimu and Maitai, and yes, there’s a new cycle trail here as well, the 85km Timber Trail that sidles around the forested flanks of park centrepiece, Mt Pureora and includes some of the highest and longest suspension bridges in New Zealand.

• Be awed by New Zealand’s largest recorded totara tree ‘Pouakani’, a 20-minute walk from SH30, 10-minutes drive from Mangakino. An estimated 1800 years of age, it’s probably also the oldest! • Climb the Forest Tower in Bismark Road, Pureora Forest Park. The 12 metre climb will make you puff, but will bring you to the treetop canopy, realm of native pigeon, parakeets and kaka.

Highlights

• Walk or ride the Waikato River Trail from Mangakino to Whakamaru. This 13km easy-graded section encompasses farmland, native and exotic forests, lake and river views. A highlight is crossing the 70 metre Mangakino Stream suspension bridge. • Pack a picnic. Both Lake Whakamaru and Lake Maraetai have delightful picnic spots. • Walk over the impressive Whakamaru Dam and learn about the Waikato River’s dam construction period at Daphne’s Museum in Mangakino. • • • ••••• • • •••••••••••••••••• •••••

3 days in Taupo

in Taupō There’s something in this region for everyone. Family fun in the snow, splashing in the hot pools, biking trails, bubbles (as in bubbling mud pools), and boat cruises to famous features like the Huka Falls and Maori Rock Carvings.

Day 1: Morning Hit the slopes for an action-packed day. Ski Whakapapa’s valleys, snowboard the terrain park, toboggan anywhere or just throw snowballs. Feeling really adventurous? Carry your skis or board beyond the highest chairlift to Mt Ruapehu’s spectacular Crater Lake. The downhill ride will make the effort well worthwhile.

Afternoon Take a deserved lunch break at one of Whakapapa’s trendy, cosy cafes. Perhaps try the architecturallystriking Knoll Ridge Café, the highest in New Zealand with international cuisine and stunning views. Then touch up your skills with a lesson from the pros. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or keen to carve up all terrain, Whakapapa Ski School has a lesson to suit.

Evening You’ve earned it. Fall into the soothing warmth of Taupo’s AC Baths and Hot Pools. Snuggle in a private mineral pool or splash outdoors with the kids on the hydro slides, Tarzan swing and in the ‘bombing zone’.

Day 2: Morning Kick start the day with locally roasted espresso and big breakfast at an artisan Taupō café. Thus satisfied, head to Taupō’s eclectic boutique stores for some serious retail therapy. With so many one-off local designer styles, be it high fashion or hardy merino gear for the snow slopes; you’ll be the envy of your friends back home.

GreatLakeTaupo.com

23 Huka Prawn Park is New Zealand’s only commercial prawn farm. Relax by the open fire in the Park’s Riverside Restaurant and feast on a platter of freshwater prawns. Learn about the special geothermal ‘farming’ techniques in a very interactive hatchery tour. Relaxed? Invigorate yourself with a spin on the Hukafalls Jet, skimming the Waikato River close to sheer rock faces and nosing into the foaming base of the Huka Falls. On your way back to Taupō, stop in at Huka Honey Hive, New Zealand’s largest showcase of honey products. Taste the ‘liquid gold’.

Evening Dine at one of Taupō’s superb restaurants, choose fare from local organic farms or international classics. Then kick back with an ice cream in the Starlight Cinema Centre, it’s boutique, cosy and offers all the latest releases including 3D.

Day 3: Morning Get pedalling on the Waikato River Trail. Mangakino Village and Lake Maraetai sit at the midway point and arguably the most scenic stretch of this 100km trail. The pumice-based trail stays dry, even in winter. Check out the 12 metre high Mangakino Suspension Bridge, and refuel on the hearty, home cooked fare at village café the Hui Hut.

Afternoon Rest your biker legs on a Sail Fearless Lake Taupo cruise. Kick back on the beanbags with a complimentary hot drink as you cruise to the famous Maori rock carvings, or you can help hoist the sails and even take the helm. If it’s raining really hard, head indoors and learn about the rich heritage of this region, the volcanic and geothermal natural history, Tuwharetoa Maori people and ‘Kiwiana’ at the Taupo Museum.

Evening Relax by the fire at The Mousetrap, the friendly waterfront restaurant with some of the best views in town. Enjoy classic Kiwi fare, from crumbed fish and chips to a 240g eye fillet of beef with all the vege trimmings and your own choice of sauce. Look for the regular specials – like half price weekend buffets for the kids!

Whakapapa is one of Tongariro National Park’s two major ski areas. More than 65 trails criss-cross over 1050 hectares of snowfilled basins where you’ll find everything from steep drop off s to challenge the dare devils, to dedicated terrain parks and gentle slopes that build beginner confi dence. In fact, Whakapapa is known for its outstanding beginners’ area, Happy Valley. If you just want to play, this is the place. Toboggan down the smaller slopes, a plastic bag will even do the trick. Build a snowman or bombard your mates with snow balls. Come in the Spring too, Mt Ruapehu typically has one of the longest snow seasons, often staying open through October and November, sometimes even later. Access is simple. Whakapapa is within easy reach of local towns and accommodation. Taupō is an easy 1.5 hour drive and Turangi is just 45 minutes away. Dining

Kiwi style fish and chips, or fine dining in a luxury lodge; contemporary New Zealand cuisine or culinary delights from cultures worldwide - you’ll find a classy or casual dining experience to suit any discernible taste. Sample top local fare with classic international flair at our top hotels and luxury lodges, which often play host to royalty and movie stars. You don’t have to blow your budget though, as many restaurants in town serve quality contemporary New Zealand food, locally-farmed organic beef, freshwater prawns and artisan-made pastas and oils. If you have landed a big trout, ask a local restaurant chef to cook it for you. Memorable dining is not just about what’s on your plate. Ambience matters too, and rest assured many Taupō restaurants, bars and cafes make the most of their surroundings. You’ll be able to snuggle by a cosy fire, and maybe check the lake and mountain views through the double-glazed windows.

©Destination Great Lake Taupō

Don’t be afraid to leave town. Throughout the Great Lake Taupō region you’ll find character-filled country and roadside cafes, serving wholesome, homemade fare. At the southern end of the lake there’s yet more dining choice; winery cafes, Turangi takeaways and fishing lodge restaurants, while at Whakapapa, nestled at the base of Mt Ruapehu, you can grab a pizza at the pub or dine in scenic grandeur at the Chateau Tongariro Hotel.

Enjoy a long, lazy brunch and locally roasted coffee at a lakeside café.

Much of Taupō’s shopping is boutique, locally-designed, one-off and original. Yes, you’ll still find the big, designer brands but definitely nothing bland. Also, there are no multi-level shopping malls or cluttered car parks to negotiate in this town and the parking’s free! Everything is very pedestrian friendly, wandering the well laid out streets noted for their names of the region’s mountains and famous ancestors. Clothing and specialist sports stores can fit you out for all adventures in the great outdoors, with stylish sportswear, soft merinos and tough all-weather gear, much of it locally designed. High fashion is also here, so you can dress with flair for that luxury lodge dinner, or impress your friends at home with that special, stylish outfit. Bring a truck to take home the homeware as you find intriguing designer items – lamps, tableware, soft furnishings and one entire shop devoted to the kitchen, with cooking and chef’s wear. Did we mention food? Specialist foodie shops or the weekly Riverside Market will get you peckish. Choose from homemade pastas, freshwater prawns, olives, oils, cheeses and chutneys and let’s not forget local craft beers and the country’s top wine varieties, all found here and with knowledgeable retailers to guide you.

Art galleries and glass studios abound. You’ll find eclectic designs and Kiwiana touches, jewellery, mosaics and sculptures. Perhaps you’ll find that special abstract painting or print to take home to remind you of the striking landscape this region boasts.
