Haere Mai Welcome to Queenstown – New Zealand’s Adventure Capital. Overlooking Lake Wakatipu and backed by towering mountains, this sophisticated alpine resort has plenty to see and do. Keep your copy of What’s On close at hand as it contains an events calendar, easy to use vouchers, maps, and information to help with accommodation, shopping, dining and transport and plenty of great ideas for activities and sightseeing. Enjoy your stay and get ready to play hard in this magnificent region.

Queenstown & Southern Lakes at a Glance The beauty of this exceptional area will take your breath away, and if it doesn’t, the adrenalin-rush activities certainly will! Queenstown enjoys the best of both worlds: sitting on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, beneath the towering peaks of The Remarkables mountain range. This beautiful resort town offers year-round activities in an environment of dazzling beauty. In spring and summer, enjoy a stroll around Queenstown Gardens or head to the lake for boating, waterskiing or windsurfing. Wanaka is a paradise for thrill seekers or a place to kick back, relax and enjoy the fantastic views.

For those who prefer adrenalin there’s jetboating, rafting, canyoning, trout fishing, gold-panning and sledging adventures; plus rock climbing and para-gliding. It’s also the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, with superb hunting, fishing, tramping and mountaineering on offer. Don’t miss a visit to the beautifully restored goldmining settlement of Arrowtown where you can browse the many shops and cafés or learn more about the area’s history. Further afield, enjoy Fiordland’s rugged seascapes and marvel at Milford Sound with the glaciated sides of the 1692m Mitre Peak. Use this booklet as your guide; take your time and take lots of photos!

Mavora Lakes Cycle Trail ©Real Journeys

Over the past few years Queenstown has undergone a quiet revolution to become an internationally renowned cycling destination. New trails and a growing range of bike-friendly products have opened up iconic landscapes and experiences for bikers. There is everything from easy scenic tracks, spectacular lakeside, backcountry trails and road rides to a jump park, heli-biking and the Southern Hemisphere’s only gondola-accessed downhill mountain biking. The 2012 Lonely Planet New Zealand Travel Guide singled out mountain biking in Queenstown as one of its top 12 new favourite New Zealand recommendations, stating that “since the opening of the Queenstown Bike Park, the region is now firmly established as an international focus for the sport.”

Experience the trail There are plenty of tracks to enjoy on the Queenstown Trail, which opened in 2012. Take your pick from easy to intermediate routes on the 110km trail. Classed as a New Zealand Great Ride, enjoy the awesome scenery as you pedal along. Stop to watch paragliders circling in the sky or enjoy a break at a winery for lunch. The trail has an easy to intermediate gradient and can be cycled as a whole or in sections.

Since the opening of the Queenstown Bike Park, the region is now firmly established as an international focus for the sport.

Choose your challenge New Zealand’s first gondola-assisted ‘bike lift’ has opened up a whole new dimension for mountain bikers in the heart of Queenstown. Riders can load their bikes onto the iconic Skyline Gondola and enjoy panoramic lake and mountain views as they’re lifted high above Queenstown to the bike park. Over 30km of trails cater for everyone from beginners to advanced downhill riders. For a more short and technical track, the hand-built Gorge Road Jump Park is located on the outskirts of Queenstown and is a favourite among BMX riders. Queenstown also offers the most heli-bike options in the world with more than 400km of trails across five mountain ranges. Helibiking is a great opportunity to experience amazing descents and epic scenery on a trip tailored to suit each rider’s ability.

Looking for adventure A new year-round bike resort in Gibbston valley provides 30km of single tracks over stunning high country terrain for learners to advanced riders. While the resort is perfect for families and entry level bikers, it also has more challenging trails for experienced riders.

Let off some steam Many of the trails explore the region’s history and townships. Discover gold mining history as you cross the Arrow River 22 times on the way to the historic gold mining town of Macetown, or start your bike explorations with a trip across the lake on the vintage TSS Earnslaw steamship before exploring the gorgeous Von Valley on the other side of Lake Wakatipu. The Around the Mountains trail, which is under construction, starts here.

Ride with the locals The Queenstown Mountain Biking Club was established by passionate locals to further establish mountain biking in the region. They have developed a trail guide highlighting and grading the rides in the region, and have created a number of mountain biking parks like the Wynyard Freestyle terrain park and the

Gorge Road jump park. About 5km out of town on the Glenorchy Road are the Seven Mile MTB trails which are a mix of cross country and intermediate downhill trails through a forest of pine trees. There are plenty of different lines allowing you to ride as casually or as fast as you like.

An increasingly popular pastime is exploring some of Central Otago’s vineyards by bike. Take a leisurely pedal down scenic back roads and on the new 8.5km River Trail through the spectacular Gibbston valley, stopping off at award-winning wineries along the way. Or take a ‘cycle de vine’ guided tour on a comfortable cruiser to see the vines that grow some of the world’s best pinot noir. Taste the end result at cellar doors and meet some of the wine makers.

Easy does it Recreational riders will have a blast cruising on tracks like the Frankton Trail, a nice and easy lakeside track following the shores of Lake Wakatipu, or the Lake Hayes loop which is an 8km circular route that can be handled by riders of almost any ability or age. Another option specially developed for families is Jardine Park which connects to stunning lakeside trails around Kelvin Heights Peninsula and out to Jack’s Point, which is a bit more challenging.

Queenstown is a hiker’s dream, with many walking tracks starting right from the town centre. Take your pick from a short walk or a multi-day hike into New Zealand’s stunning back country; the inspiring grandeur of Fiordland and Mount Aspiring national parks is also within easy reach. World-class network Launched in 2012, the Queenstown Trail has opened up a 110km network of easy to intermediate gradient trails linking Queenstown Bay, Frankton, Lake Hayes, Arrowtown, and Gibbston’s ‘valley of vines’. The trail follows pristine rivers, lakes and mountain ranges as well as passing by iconic Queenstown experiences such as bungy jumping, jet boating and wine tasting.

Popular walking spots incorporated in the trail include the Gibbston River Trail with amazing lookouts over the Kawarau River, and the Lake Hayes Loop Track which has panoramic lake and mountain views. The Manse Road Trail allows walkers to explore the picturesque village of Arrowtown on foot and learn more about the fascinating history of its restored Chinese Village. Find out more by reading the interpretation panels in English and simplified Chinese.

Scenic short walks from downtown Queenstown range from a leisurely lakeside stroll around the Queenstown Gardens, hiking up Queenstown Hill to enjoy magnificent lake and mountain views, or following the sunny lakeside trail along Kelvin Heights Peninsula to Jack’s Point. The more challenging Ben Lomond Track is a popular day trip which rewards walkers with stunning 360-degree views of the region. Maps and trail information are on hand at information centres, Department of Conservation (DOC) offices and Arrowtown’s Lakes District Museum.

Multi-day hikes More challenging multi-day hikes include the Hump Ridge, Greenstone and Hollyford tracks and three of New Zealand’s most famous Great Walks – the Routeburn, Milford and Kepler. Hikers can walk these tracks independently and stay at DOC huts or campsites or choose a guided trip for more diversity, comfort and convenience. These trips offer fascinating insights into the region’s flora, fauna, geology and history as well as private lodges with comfy beds, hot showers and three-course meals. Combo options include helicopter and jet boat rides, and door-to-door transfers.

Local walks Frankton Arm Walkway – 1 to 1.5 hours This pleasant and popular walk along the lakeshore between Queenstown and Frankton is predominantly flat and easy with great views. Access is from either Peninsula Road or the Frankton Reserve.

Wanaka and the surrounding area is a hiker’s paradise and you’ll be spoilt for choice with the many options available. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing lakeside stroll or a multi-day hike into Mt Aspiring National Park, you’ll find a way to escape back to nature. One of the locals’ favourites is a hike up Mt Iron, close to Wanaka town centre. From the top you can enjoy 360 degree views from the Clutha River Basin stretching to the majestic Southern Alps. Alternatively, try the pretty Outlet Track or visit one of the nearby communities of Lake Hawea or Luggate along the riverside tracks. Discover the native flora and fauna on many of the area’s hikes, including golden tussock, dark manuka trees and beech forest. Make sure you also keep a lookout for New Zealand’s native parrot, the Kea, an inquisitive bird who will not be shy about stealing your lunch so keep hold of it at all times!

Hiking Highlights This track is widely regarded as the best half-day walk in New Zealand. It begins from the Raspberry Creek Car Park and follows the river upstream for 10 minutes before crossing a swing bridge and plunging into native beech rainforest and the heart of the Mt Aspiring National Park. The trail climbs gradually (one short steeper section) on a well maintained track through the beech forest. After approximately two hours the trail emerges above the trees into an alpine meadow with stunning views of the Rob Roy Glacier which is flanked by huge 600ft waterfalls. This is a great picnic spot (watch out for keas) before returning to the car park via the same route. The track can be walked independently or guided options are available.

Diamond Lake / Rocky Mountain – variable distance The walk starts just past Hospital Flat on the way to Treble Cone ski field. A short stroll takes you up to the picturesque Diamond Lake and a new path follows the small lake around its perimeter. For a longer 2–3 hour return walk, follow the track and stairs to the summit of Rocky Mountain for stunning views of Lake Wanaka, Mt Aspiring and the Matukituki Valley.

Mount Iron Loop Track – 1 hour loop walk Starting from a car park on State Highway Six almost opposite Puzzling World the Mt Iron loop walk rewards walkers with a brilliant 360-degree view of Lake Wanaka, Lake Hawea, and the Clutha and Cardrona Valleys.

Millennium Track – variable distance The lakeside track is approx 12km one-way from Wanaka town to Glendhu Bay. For those wanting a short walk, stroll along the lakefront as far as Rippon Vineyard – and whilst there why not pop up to the cellar door to taste some wine and buy a bottle or two for dinner.

Siberia Valley – half day The fly–walk–jetboat combos available from Makarora into the heart of the Mt Aspiring National Park are a great way to quickly access spectacular wilderness areas. The trip begins with a scenic flight over the glaciers of the National Park before landing in a sub-alpine meadow for a 2–3 hour walk down the Siberia Valley, through the beech forest. Walkers are then met by a jetboat for a thrilling 30–40min jetboat safari back to base. www.siberiaexperience.co.nz

Gillespie Pass Circuit – 3–4 days This multi-day walk travels up the Young Valley, crosses the Gillespie Pass and then follows the Wilkin Valley back to Makarora. Choose from camping or DOC huts. Jetboat transfers are available to the start or finish of the walk.

Te Araroa Route (The Long Pathway) – variable distance Another great option is the Te Araroa Route (The Long Pathway), a 3,000 km walking and tramping trail from Cape Reinga in Northland to Bluff in Southland, which passes through the Lake Wanaka region. Lord of the Rings

Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings cast and crew fell in love with the dramatic mountain scenery of this region, and you will too. ”Tolkien’s world was one of the deep hidden valleys, barren wastelands, remote mystical mountains and lush, low valleys” Peter Jackson. The majestic beauty of New Zealand’s adventure capital and the surrounding area fit this imagery perfectly. Whether you are a full enthusiast or have just seen one of the films, it is an amazing opportunity to view some of the key locations used for this epic trilogy. Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu was used as the location for some scenes involving ‘Lothlorien’, home to the Lady of the Forest, Galadriel. The river Kawarau, which flows from Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu to Cromwell, became part of the Great River Anduin, and fans can now raft past the site of Argonath (the Pillar of the Kings). The pillars themselves, of course, were computer-generated.

While Queenstown is known for its endless excitement, it’s also a place to relax and unwind. If you’ve been busy sightseeing, or hitting the shopping, ensure you get some time to spend on yourself and revitalise. Queenstown and the surrounding area has plenty of great beauty salons and spas, where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself thoroughly pampered. Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many relaxing and revitalising treatments available; enjoy a facial treatment or invigorating massage, or why not give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak and a pedicure. For some total indulgence, lie back and enjoy an aromatic full body polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering together. Get your nails done, top up your tan in safety, or give yourself the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliating treatment. Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.

For some total indulgence give yourself the star treatment.

Arrowtown

Tucked away at the end of a valley, Arrowtown is known for its tranquility and charm. It is the perfect alternative to its busier neighbour, Queenstown. Arrowtown is a ‘must visit’, if you want to shop at a leisurely pace, dine at the many cafés or restaurants, or take in a movie at a boutique cinema. You can also enjoy one of the many walks close to the town or soak up the history at the Lakes District Museum. The tree-lined avenues are not only picturesque, but also serve to frame the town’s history. The site of the first gold discovery in the Wakatipu in 1862, the town has managed to retain many of its heritage buildings.

Arrowtown Through planning controls and community lobbying, around 60 buildings and features remain. During the goldrush, Chinese miners were invited to the town in an effort to stimulate the flagging economy. Their settlement on the outskirts of town has been turned into a park with some of the buildings remaining intact, while others have been recreated to give the visitor a sense of how the Chinese miners lived. Walking and biking have become increasingly popular with over 15 trails leaving from Arrowtown. These range from one-hour circuits to all day expeditions – a trail map is available at the Lakes District museum.

Lakes District Museum Arrowtown’s unique museum, established in 1948, presents another authentic picture of early Maori in the Southern Lakes District.

Cromwell

Around Queenstown

98

Nestled on the shores of Lake Dunstan, Cromwell has been shaped by gold, fruit and hydro-electricity. From the mid to late 1800s, the town was the main centre for the goldrush areas of Central Otago. Discover this colourful era at the Gold Fields Mining Centre, and at the historic goldmining sites of Bannockburn, Bendigo and Kawarau. During the 1920s, a local irrigation scheme led to the development of the region’s famous stonefruit orchards and its arid climate makes the region unique for cherry and apricot growing, as well as peaches, nectarines and plums. Grapes are also grown now, and the district’s wineries are producing some quality wines which are well worth sampling. Cromwell has numerous walks to enjoy, with the mountains as a stunning backdrop. The Bannockburn Bridge to Goldfields Mining Centre is probably the best walk through gold mining heritage in the country, according to Terry Emmitt from the Cromwell Promotion Group. “There are large areas of hand-stacked tailings which shows the incredible amount of work required to extract gold,” he says. When you return from the walk, reward yourself with a glass of wine at one of the local pubs.

Cromwell

Cromwell underwent major transformation in the 1980s when the Clyde Dam power station and Lake Dunstan were constructed. Parts of the old town were flooded and the town centre was relocated. Some of Cromwell’s historic buildings were reconstructed and can be explored at Old Cromwell Town. Old Cromwell Town is also the base for numerous local artists and artisans and is open daily. Have a browse around the museum buildings and visit working artists and shops throughout the area, with options to suit different tastes and budgets. Make sure you spend some time exploring this unique piece of New Zealand’s pioneering past. It’s also worth paying a visit to the Cromwell and Districts Museum and Information Centre, which you’ll find in The Mall. The museum has displays on Cromwell township, family life, the discovery of gold, the Chinese influence, pioneer women, and the history of its bridges and hotels.

Nowhere is New Zealand’s wild beauty displayed to better effect than in Fiordland’s tumbling waterfalls, glacial lakes, remote fiords and towering granite peaks. Fiordland National Park was established in 1952, and covers an area of 1.2 million hectares. Early Maori hunted, fished and gathered pounamu here for hundreds of years, and in 1773 Captain Cook and his crew became the first Europeans to visit Fiordland, spending five weeks in Dusky Sound. Cook’s maps and descriptions soon attracted sealers and whalers to the region, but the sheer steepness of the terrain, the incredible isolation, and the wettest climate in New Zealand deterred all but the hardiest from settlement.

Te Anau The town of Te Anau, located on the shores of the South Island’s largest lake, is the gateway to Fiordland National Park. It makes an ideal base for exploring the region or embarking on your choice of three of New Zealand’s Great Walks – the Milford, Kepler or Routeburn tracks. From Te Anau it is a short scenic boat ride across the lake to the magical Te Anau Glowworm Caves. Alternatively, take a cruise up the lake to Glade House – the starting point of the Milford Track. Float plane, fixed wing and helicopter rides around Lake Te Anau and Fiordland offer spectacular views of the mountain scenery.

There are many ways to experience Doubtful Sound – by kayak or cruise, as a day trip or on an overnight experience. Milford Sound 105

Milford Sound is the sparkling gem in Fiordland’s crown, drawing thousands of visitors each year. For many, the 1692 metre Mitre Peak is a highlight, jutting from the still waters of the sound. It’s 16km from the head of the sound to the open sea and the sheer sides of this drowned glacial valley rise some 1200m above sea level. In 1912 John Grono was the fi rst European to settle in the sound, naming it after Milford Haven in Wales. Day and overnight cruises explore the sound, but make sure you book in advance. En route, you’ll get to see Milford Sound’s dramatic waterfalls, including the Bowen, Fairy, Sutherland and Stirling Falls, as well as the iconic Mitre Peak, Anita Bay and the underwater observatory at Harrison Cove. Day cruises depart from the wharf complex, a short walk from the Mitre Peak Café and carpark. Nature lovers have a real treat in store, with a huge variety of wildlife including native dolphins, seals and penguins, and sea kayaking tours offer another great way of exploring the fiord.

Franz Josef

The Franz Josef Glacier was ďŹ rst explored in 1865 by geologist Julius von Haast, who named it after the Austrian emperor. Today the Franz Josef Glacier (Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere, or tears of the avalanche girl) offers visitors the chance to experience the power and awe inspiring beauty of this ever-changing glacial environment, all within easy driving and walking distance from the main highway. There are a number of glacier experiences on offer: walking up the glacier valley oor enjoying the lush New Zealand bush at its pristine best, or doing a short helicopter ride onto the ice to hike amongst the amazing crevasses and ice formations. The visitor centre has a brochure detailing walks. Enjoy an evening bush walk right to the glowworms, or relax in the Glacier Hot Pools after a day at the ice face.
