For a unique experience, book a heli-skiing package, where you get to experience the full awe of the scenery, then ski down to lunch, only to be taken by helicopter again to your next run. Conditions can be variable so check current snow and weather forecasts before you head for the mountains.

Heli-Skiing
Snowzone
32
Heli-skiing has got to be one of the most exciting and exhilarating winter activities anywhere in the world, and any intermediate skier or snowboarder with enthusiasm and a reasonable degree of ďŹ tness can get into it. Imagine standing on top of an untouched powder paradise, surrounded by lakes and mountains, miles from anywhere; you click into your bindings, take a deep breath of pure mountain air and contemplate the majesty of your surroundings. Push off and glide into exhilaration. Powder flies, adrenalin pumps and you soon become a tiny figure amongst the immense silence of the mountain world. At the bottom the helicopter awaits to lift you effortlessly to the top of another peak. Conditions can vary depending upon the time of year. Some heli-skiers opt for spring skiing because of longer days, warmer temperatures, and the opportunity to ski greater vertical.
ŠHeliLine
The length of skier descents depends on the weather, snow stability and snow quality which is evaluated by the guides and pilots. On long descents, the snow may change character dramatically from cold to warm over the elevation change.
Heli-skiing is a fantastic way to get away from the crowds. Fly by helicopter to ski untouched powder and experience the true majesty of the mountains.

Lord of the Rings
Lord of the Rings
The Lord of the Rings cast and crew fell in love with the dramatic mountain scenery of this region, and you will too. ”Tolkien’s world was one of the deep hidden valleys, barren wastelands, remote mystical mountains and lush, low valleys,” says Peter Jackson. The majestic beauty of New Zealand’s adventure capital and the surrounding area fit this imagery perfectly. Whether you are a full enthusiast or have just seen one of the films, it is an amazing opportunity to view some of the key locations used for this epic trilogy. Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu was used as the location for some scenes involving ‘Lothlorien’, home to the Lady of the Forest, Galadriel. The river Kawarau, which flows from Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu to Cromwell, became part of the Great River Anduin, and fans can now raft past the site of Argonath (the Pillar of the Kings). The pillars themselves, of course, were computer-generated.

While Queenstown is known for its endless excitement, it’s also a place to relax and unwind. If you’ve been busy sightseeing, or hitting the shopping, ensure you get some time to spend on yourself and revitalise. Queenstown and the surrounding area has plenty of great beauty salons and spas, where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself thoroughly pampered. Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many relaxing and revitalising treatments available; enjoy a facial treatment or invigorating massage, or why not give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak and a pedicure. For some total indulgence, lie back and enjoy an aromatic full body polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering together. Get your nails done, top up your tan in safety, or give yourself the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliating treatment. Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.
For some total indulgence give yourself the star treatment.

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments to friendly backpacker hostels; from bright and buzzy city centre to B&B rooms with a mountain view, or meeting rooms conveniently close to the airport, Queenstown has room for you. Hotels generally offer tea/coffee making facilities, a bathroom and an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually offer self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fixed budget, try some of the backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities. Holiday parks are another good alternative, providing cabins or camping in a more peaceful rural setting. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To find out more, visit jasons.co.nz/queenstown/accommodation. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities. Arrowtown
Tucked away at the end of a valley, Arrowtown is known for its tranquillity and charm. It is the perfect alternative to its busier neighbour, Queenstown. Arrowtown is a ‘must visit’, if you want to shop at a leisurely pace, dine at the many cafés or restaurants, or take in a movie at a boutique cinema. You can also enjoy one of the many walks close to the town or soak up the history at the Lakes District Museum. The tree-lined avenues are not only picturesque, but also serve to frame the town’s history. The site of the first gold discovery in the Wakatipu in 1862, the town has managed to retain many of its heritage buildings.

Arrowtown Through planning controls and community lobbying, around 60 buildings and features remain. During the goldrush, Chinese miners were invited to the town in an effort to stimulate the flagging economy. Their settlement on the outskirts of town has been turned into a park with some of the buildings remaining intact, while others have been recreated to give the visitor a sense of how the Chinese miners lived. Walking and biking have become increasingly popular with over 15 trails leaving from Arrowtown. These range from one-hour circuits to all day expeditions – a trail map is available at the Lakes District museum.
Lakes District Museum Arrowtown’s unique museum, established in 1948, presents another authentic picture of early Maori in the Southern Lakes District.

Wanaka
Wanaka is perfect for those looking for all the splendour of the southern lakes, but with a more relaxed atmosphere than neighbouring Queenstown. The town comes alive in winter though, as it offers easy access to the broadest range of snow activity options of any town in New Zealand. Treble Cone is renowned for the best lift accessed ski terrain in the country, whilst Cardrona Alpine Resort caters well for families and beginners. Wanaka also boasts New Zealand’s only commercial cross-country ski field, and advanced riders can ‘Indy’ all they like at the 100% artificial Snow Park. A great selection of restaurants, cafes and nightlife will leave you spoilt for choice, and for a day off the slopes there’s Puzzling World, fun for all ages, or Paradiso, the world’s comfiest cinema, where the smell of freshly baked brownies will have your mouth watering by intermission.

Cromwell

Nestled on the shores of Lake Dunstan, Cromwell has been shaped by gold, fruit and hydro-electricity. From the mid to late 1800s, the town was the main centre for the goldrush areas of Central Otago. Discover this colourful era at the Gold Fields Mining Centre, and at the historic goldmining sites of Bannockburn, Bendigo and Kawarau. During the 1920s, a local irrigation scheme led to the development of the region’s famous stonefruit orchards and its arid climate makes the region unique for cherry and apricot growing, as well as peaches, nectarines and plums. Grapes are also grown now, and the district’s wineries are producing some quality wines which are well worth sampling. Cromwell has numerous walks to enjoy, with the mountains as a stunning backdrop. The Bannockburn Bridge to Goldfields Mining Centre is probably the best walk through gold mining heritage in the country, according to Terry Emmitt from the Cromwell Promotion Group. “There are large areas of hand-stacked tailings which shows the incredible amount of work required to extract gold,” he says. When you return from the walk, reward yourself with a glass of wine at one of the local pubs.

Cromwell underwent major transformation in the 1980s when the Clyde Dam power station and Lake Dunstan were constructed. Parts of the old town were flooded and the town centre was relocated. Some of Cromwell’s historic buildings were reconstructed and can be explored at Old Cromwell Town. Old Cromwell Town is also the base for numerous local artists and artisans and is open daily. Have a browse around the museum buildings and visit working artists and shops throughout the area, with options to suit different tastes and budgets. Make sure you spend some time exploring this unique piece of New Zealand’s pioneering past. It’s also worth paying a visit to the Cromwell and Districts Museum and Information Centre, which you’ll find in The Mall. The museum has displays on Cromwell township, family life, the discovery of gold, the Chinese influence, pioneer women, and the history of its bridges and hotels.

Fiordland

Nowhere is New Zealand’s wild beauty displayed to better effect than in Fiordland’s tumbling waterfalls, glacial lakes, remote fiords and towering granite peaks. Fiordland National Park was established in 1952, and covers an area of 1.2 million hectares. Early Maori hunted, fished and gathered pounamu here for hundreds of years, and in 1773 Captain Cook and his crew became the first Europeans to visit Fiordland, spending five weeks in Dusky Sound. Cook’s maps and descriptions soon attracted sealers and whalers to the region, but the sheer steepness of the terrain, the incredible isolation, and the wettest climate in New Zealand deterred all but the hardiest from settlement.
Te Anau The town of Te Anau, located on the shores of the South Island’s largest lake, is the gateway to Fiordland National Park. It makes an ideal base for exploring the region or embarking on your choice of three of New Zealand’s Great Walks – the Milford, Kepler or Routeburn tracks. From Te Anau it is a short scenic boat ride across the lake to the magical Te Anau Glowworm Caves. Alternatively, take a cruise up the lake to Glade House – the starting point of the Milford Track. Float plane, fixed wing and helicopter rides around Lake Te Anau and Fiordland offer spectacular views of the mountain scenery.

At 421 metres deep, Doubtful Sound is the deepest of the fiords. It is long and winding with three distinct ‘arms’ and several stunning waterfalls between Deep Cove and the open ocean, a distance of around 40.4 kilometres. There are many ways to experience Doubtful Sound – by kayak or cruise, as a day trip or on an overnight experience. Tours start with a 30km cruise across beautiful Lake Manapouri, the second deepest lake in New Zealand. Most trips also include a visit 2km underground into the Manapouri hydroelectric Power Station, an amazing feat of engineering and an important part of the region’s history. Enjoy the spectacular 22km drive over the Wilmot Pass road to Deep Cove, the entrance to Doubtful Sound. Be amazed by the rugged mountains blanketed in dense sub-tropical rainforest, waterfalls, glacier-shaped valleys and the pristine waterways. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, such as Fiordland Crested Penguins, dolphins, New Zealand Fur Seals and sea birds which can be seen on many of the small islets at the entrance of the fiord. The fiord is also home to one of the southernmost population of bottlenose dolphins, so don’t forget your camera!

Milford Sound 109
Milford Sound is the sparkling gem in Fiordland’s crown, drawing thousands of visitors each year. For many, the 1692 metre Mitre Peak is a highlight, jutting from the still waters of the sound. It’s 16km from the head of the sound to the open sea and the sheer sides of this drowned glacial valley rise some 1200m above sea level. In 1912 John Grono was the fi rst European to settle in the sound, naming it after Milford Haven in Wales. Day and overnight cruises explore the sound, but make sure you book in advance. En route, you’ll get to see Milford Sound’s dramatic waterfalls, including the Bowen, Fairy, Sutherland and Stirling Falls, as well as the iconic Mitre Peak, Anita Bay and the underwater observatory at Harrison Cove. Day cruises depart from the wharf complex, a short walk from the Blue Duck Café & Bar and carpark. Nature lovers have a real treat in store, with a huge variety of wildlife including native dolphins, seals and penguins, and sea kayaking tours offer another great way of exploring the fiord.

Franz Josef
The Franz Josef Glacier was ďŹ rst explored in 1865 by geologist Julius von Haast, who named it after the Austrian emperor. Today the Franz Josef Glacier (Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere, or tears of the avalanche girl) offers visitors the chance to experience the power and awe inspiring beauty of this ever-changing glacial environment, all within easy driving and walking distance from the main highway. There are a number of glacier experiences on offer: walking up the glacier valley oor enjoying the lush New Zealand bush at its pristine best, or doing a short helicopter ride onto the ice to hike amongst the amazing crevasses and ice formations. The visitor centre has a brochure detailing walks. Enjoy an evening bush walk right to the glowworms, or relax in the Glacier Hot Pools after a day at the ice face.
