Biking in Queenstown
Queenstown Bike Park Skyline MTB
Whether you enjoy cruising along or blazing downhill, Queenstown and the surrounding areas have tracks to suit riders of all abilities. From novice through to seasoned downhillers and cross country specialists mountain biking junkies can push themselves to the limit and ride the variety of trails ranging from smooth and flowing to tricky and technical. Options include guided and independent tours and bike hire rentals. For something a little different take New Zealand’s only Gondola assisted bike lift providing Mountain bike access to Ben Lomond Forest. Important: select a trail that suits your abilities, our notes are intended as a guide only, please visit www.nzbybike.com for full trail notes As with any outdoor activity in Queenstown be prepared for weather changes and carry warm clothing.
Frankton Trail Grade 1: Easy (1-2 hours return) Distance: 4km each way Directions: Head out from Queenstown Gardens along Peninsula Street till the road ends and becomes the Frankton Trail.
A popular ride, this is a nice and easy lakeside trail that follows the shores of Lake Wakatipu between Queenstown and Frankton. Cycling in and out of the bush canopy the Lake is right there for the whole trip with lovely views across to the Remarkables and Kelvin Heights. The trail is easy. You can start your ride by either cycling out along Peninsula Road from the Queenstown gardens or heading from Frankton beach along the obvious pathway along the lake. This is one of the few relatively flat rides in mountainous Queenstown. It’s great for beginners and families. Add on either the Kelvin Heights Track if you looking for more of a challenge.
Kelvin Heights Track Grade 3-4: Intermediate. If you are heading to Jack´s Point the hard parts can be missed by cutting the peninsula out.
Distance: 16km return Directions: Starts 100m south of the Kawarau Bridge in Frankton The Kelvin Heights Track is enjoyable for all beginner and intermediate riders (plus a section for the advanced rider). This

track can be added to the Frankton Trail, or you can start from Frankton. The trail itself starts just below the Bridge as it crosses the Kawarau. The section along the lake front from Frankton to the yacht club near the golf course is easy and suitable for all levels of beginners. The gravel trail is wide and flat and the views out to the lake are fantastic. Once you reach the golf course however the trail gets progressively harder. It becomes increasingly narrow with a number of steep drops and rocks to navigate. The further you go round the harder the trail gets. The hardest part of the trail, for advanced riders only, is from Park Street to Jardines Park.
Jack’s Point Trail Grade 2-3: Easy Distance: 9km each way Time: 1-2 hours each way Directions: Start this ride from either Jack’s Point or Kelvin Heights Peninsula. The Jack’s Point trail can be connected with a full day easy ride from Queenstown on the Frankton Track and Kelvin Heights Trail (Note Kelvin Heights Trail is grade 3-4).
The trail from Kelvin Heights peninsula to the Jack’s Point community is one of the most spectacular rides in the Queenstown area. Technically the ride is just above easy although there are a few very sharp rises on some narrow trails - but the trail overall is pretty smooth gravel. The ride can be completed from either the Jack’s Point end or from the Kelvin Heights end. The easiest ride is to cross through Jardines Park and onto the marked trail. The trail meanders high above Lake Wakatipu providing stunning views of Cecil Peak and Lake Wakatipu.
Moke Lake Loop Grade: 2-3 – Intermediate Distance: 7km Time: less than one hour Directions: Start this ride from DOC Camp Site at Moke Lake. You can ride in the other direction - but the hill over the peninsula is steeper
The Moke Lake camping area is a fabulous area to spend the day with the family, swimming, kicking a ball around and throwing in a few rides. The 7 kilometre Moke Lake Loop is something that nearly all the family can do. Be prepared to lift your bike over a
26
Biking in Queenstown few farms stiles as you head to the trail start. Watch out for dips in the track from drainage channels that can have some riders going too fast flying over the handle bars. At the Southern End at a Y Junction takes you off to Lake Dispute. Continue to the left where the trail goes onto a wooden boardwalk to cross a marsh area. At the end of the board walk after crossing one more farm sty the trail rises sharply to climb up and over the peninsula before another section of boardwalk brings you to the main Moke Lake road where it is a short ride back to the camping area.
Gibbston River Trail Grade 2-3: Easy Distance: 5km Peregrine to Wine Kitchen, Peregrine to Waitiri Creek 1.8 km Time: 1-2 hours each way Directions: You can start this ride at either end. From Queenstown head out of town on State Highway 6 past Frankton and Lake Hayes, heading toward Cromwell.
The Gibbston River Trail is the newest trail in the Wakatipu region and it is a pearler! Cruise your way through the “Valley of the Vines” along the bluffs high above the roaring Kawarau River stopping at the lookouts for picnic lunches or at one of the many vineyards for a tasting of the wines from the world famous Gibbston Region.
12 Mile Delta Grade 2-3: Distance: Time: Directions:
Intermediate 20km return 1-2 hours The trail starts at the 12 Mile Delta Camping Area off the Glenorchy Road
The 12 Mile Delta is an easy to intermediate ride from the 12 Mile Delta camping ground to Bob’s Cove and back. The trail is flat for most of the ride although two short sections may have beginner riders pushing their bike. The track weaves it’s way in and out of native bush following all the way round the shores of Lake Wakitipu.
7 Mile Grade 3-5: Intermediate to advanced Time: Allow at least 2 hours to get a good feel for the area Directions: A 10-minute drive from Queenstown on the Glenorchy Road from either 7 Mile Delta or Wilsons Bay carpark (easier access) both on the Glenorchy Road
The purpose built single track at 7 Mile Delta (being 7 miles from downtown Queenstown) ranks as some of the best riding in New Zealand by many featuring a mix of cross country and intermediate downhill tracks through a pine forest. There are heaps of loops and variations to be done that all circle back to the central hubs known as the The Hub, Eagles Nest and the Dream Arena.
Lake Hayes Track Grade1: Easy Distance: 8.5km Time: 40-60minutes This lovely single track around the Lake is a favourite of locals and visitors. The track is probably best in early morning or later in the afternoon because of it’s popularity with walkers - particularly in the weekends. There are a few narrow sections where there is a
27
Biking in Queenstown significant drop off at the edge of the pathway down to the lake but it is not technical and can be handled by any ability of rider or age. A short section on a narrow board walk through the swamp end of the lake can be challenging for absolute beginners. There are a couple of very short steepish climbs on the north-east side of the lake and a slightly longer but less steep climb on the southwest side. The easiest way to ride the track is clockwise.
Zoot Track Off the side of the Coronet Peak Access Road is the awesome Zoot track. It rips through the alpine tussock and schist rock terrain in a wicked ribbon of dirt. Multiple features abound on the side of the track that expert riders will hit at pace, lofting through the picturesque scenery. For those of us that are not hard charging experts, however, the track allows for any pace and you need not be a movie star to enjoy the ride. This is a Queenstown must do.
Skippers Pack Track and Zoot Track Tough XC loop from Queenstown, for advanced riders, go prepared there are no facilities on the route. Expect to walk sections.
Queenstown Bike Park In amongst the pine trees of the Ben Lomond Reserve, the newly named ‘Queenstown Bike Park’ boasts world class biking trails with varying terrain for all abilities. The Skyline gondola provides easy access to a 450m vertical descent and with over 30km of tracks its fuelling bikers’ demand for dirt. visit www.nzbybike.com for full trail notes for all trails
GRADING INFORMATION GRADE 1 Easiest Fairly flat, wide, smooth track or gravel road. Around Queenstown
Arrowtown looks great in all seasons. Tucked away at the end of a valley, away from the prevailing winds, the town is known for its tranquillity and charm. It is the perfect foil for its busier neighbour, Queenstown. If you want to shop at a leisurely pace, dine at the many cafes or restaurants, take in a movie at a boutique cinema, undertake one of the many walks close to the town or soak up the history at the Lakes District Museum, then Arrowtown is a ‘must visit’. Linger by the river with locally-baked pie or kiwi fish and chips. Arrowtown’s unique museum, established in 1948, presents an authentic picture of early Maori in the Southern Lakes District, exhibits the harsh pioneering days of the European Settlers, and the exciting goldrush era. The museum complex includes the town’s original Bank of New Zealand premises, the bank’s stables and the town’s baker’s oven all built circa 1875. Exhibits are family friendly and hands on learning is always encouraged. Not only are the trees a point of difference for Arrowtown, but also its history. The site of the first gold discovery in the Wakatipu in 1862, the town has managed to retain many of its heritage buildings. Through planning controls and community lobbying, around 60 buildings and features remain. During the goldrush, Chinese miners were invited to the town in an effort to stimulate the flagging economy. Their settlement on the outskirts of town has been turned into a park with some of the buildings remaining intact, while others have been recreated to give the visitor a sense of how the Chinese miners lived. Walking and biking have become increasingly popular with over 15 trails leaving from Arrowtown. These range from 1 hour circuits to all day expeditions – a trail map is available at the Museum.

Real Journeys, Milford Mariner
Fiordland A visit to magnificent Fiordland National Park is a highlight for many visitors to the country. Nowhere is New Zealand’s wild beauty displayed to better effect, than in Fiordland’s tumbling waterfalls, glacial lakes, remote fiords and towering granite peaks. For an extra special experience, both Real Journeys with the ‘Fiordland Navigator’ and Fiordland Expeditions with the ‘Tutuko’ offer superb overnight cruise options on Doubtful Sound.
Milford Sound Famous for its breathtaking beauty, sheer peaks and thundering waterfalls, Milford Sound is the gem in Fiordland’s crown, drawing thousands of visitors each year. For many, the much-photographed Mitre Peak is a highlight, jutting from the still waters of the sound. This towering rock face – said to resemble a Bishop’s mitre – is one of Milford Sound’s most famous sights, rising for 1695 metres. Nature lovers have a real treat in store at Milford Sound, with a huge variety of wildlife including native dolphins, seals and penguins. There are plenty of options for exploring the sound’s

serene waters. One of the most popular is a day or overnight cruise, but make sure you book in advance, especially during the busy summer months. Day cruises depart from the wharf complex, a short walk from the Blue Duck Café and Bar. En route, you’ll get to see Milford Sound’s dramatic waterfalls, including the Bowen, Fairy and Stirling Falls, as well as Mitre Peak and the Milford Sound Underwater Observatory at Harrison Cove. Located 10m underwater, this observation gallery looks out over the heart of the fiord, allowing visitors to see fish, sea fans, giant starfish and even the odd seal. Sea kayaking tours are another great way to go exploring, allowing close-up views of the native wildlife and towering Mitre Peak, or take a scenic flight or float plane ride for spectacular aerial views.

The fiord is also home to one of the southernmost population of bottlenose dolphins.
