24 hours in Rotorua

You’ve arrived in New Zealand’s thermal heartland and there’s so much you must see, yet you only have 24hours, or less, to visit with us? Rotorua’s natural wonders, and welcoming people have so much to offer, so where should you start? Never fear, here’s our recommendations as to what to fit in for the short time you’re here.

Morning your day the best 8.00 Start possible way – with a visit to Whakarewarewa Forest,

am

The Redwoods. Grab a coffee from the cart outside the gift shop and then set off on your stroll. You can’t help but be impressed by the beautiful morning light as it filters through the Californian Coastal Redwoods. Peaceful yet teeming with life, native birds will keep you company as you explore the many paths and discover many stunning views. Make sure you take a look around their gift shop – they have an extensive range of quality handcrafted native wooden gifts as well as gifts inspired by nature. The best bit is that all profits from the shop go towards the upkeep of the forest. Phone: 07 350 0110. www.redwoods.co.nz

New Zealand has always 10.00 estimated been famous for its sheep. It’s that there are 20 sheep

am

for every person who lives here, which is why you really must visit Agrodome. Set in the heart of a 350-acre working farm, this is your hands-on chance to find out what life on a New Zealand farm is all about. The Farm Show is lots of fun as you get introduced to different types of sheep, then see them shorn live, just the way they do in the wool sheds. The sheep dogs put on a show – you’ll be surprised at just how quickly they can get sheep (and ducks) into line! After The Farm Show the farm tour is in order. Agrodome runs sheep on the property, but it is also the site of a 100% organic orchard and olive grove. Phone: 07 357 1050. www.agrodome.co.nz

Afternoon five minutes drive from central Rotorua city, take the 1.00 Just Skyline gondola (seats eight in each

pm

cablecar) 487 metres up Mount Ngongotaha and marvel at the breathtaking vista across Rotorua and the lake. After you’ve taken lots of photos, enjoy a sumptuous lunch at the new Market Kitchen Café, sample some Volcanic Hills Wines in the Tasting Room, while those with a sweet tooth can sample some bizarre-sounding jellybean flavours at the Jelly Belly shop. You took the tranquil way up the hill, so why not take the thrilling way down with a world-first luge designed and built in Rotorua. This fun-filled gravity ride on a 3-wheel cart uses a unique steering and braking system providing the rider with full control. Phone: 07 347 0027. www.skyline.co.nz/rotorua

the world-renowned 3.00 Visit Rotorua Museum – it’s like no other museum in the world

23

and it’s a great introduction to Rotorua’s past, and the world of the Te Arawa people, Rotorua’s original inhabitants who came from across the Pacific Ocean. Discover Rotorua’s rich culture, volatile landscape and legendary fi gures in this must see museum. Innovative displays, changing art exhibitions, and cinema experiences bring the region’s history to life. You can also learn more about the history of the Rotorua Spa and explore the Bath House from basement to rooftop. The stunning Bath House building can be explored from the mud bath basement to the viewing platform on the rooftop. Phone 07 350 1814. www.rotoruamuseum.co.nz

Evening Rotorua – feel the spirit – 5.00 Manaakitanga. But what does that pm actually mean? An ancient cultural

concept of Maori, Manaakitanga means that when you visit somewhere, your hosts should take care of you completely; your enjoyment is their responsibility and they must fully commit themselves to you having a good time. Te Puia is the embodiment of this concept. A cultural centre close to town in the geothermal Whakarewarewa Valley, you will enjoy a traditional powhiri (welcome) onto the centre grounds before feasting on hangi – a meal that is prepared in the traditional way, on hot rocks beneath the ground. After dinner there will be kapa haka (Maori cultural) performances, and a chance to explore the Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley by night. Don’t worry, the paths are well lit and the friendly staff are on hand. The atmosphere is incredible just being able to see the Pohutu geyser lit like that is reason enough to go. Phone: 0800 TE PUIA (0800 83 784). www.tepuia.com

You can’t visit Rotorua without 8.00 relaxing in a hot pool or soaking pm in a mud pool. People have been

seeking out the health benefits of Rotorua’s geothermal springs and mud pools for over 250 years, one soak or mud mask and you’ll know why! Invigorating your skin yet relaxing your mind and your muscles, the mud leaves your skin velvety soft and glowing. has to offer for groups All the best travel memories are those shared with friends, family, or other like-minded souls, so gather your mates and loved-ones together, because we’ve selected the best of what Rotorua has to offer for group visits.

Whakarewarewa Thermal Village The Tuhourangi/Ngati Wahiao people have a proud heritage that they’ve shared with visitors from all around the world for over two hundred years. Join a guided tour through the village and see how geothermal activity is utilised for everyday use; from cooking (enjoy a full hangi meal, or eat a corn-onthe-cob cooked in a mineral pool) to bathing and heating. Be entertained by a cultural performance, and learn about this unique way of life. Overnight stays can be arranged for groups of ten or more (bookings are essential). Government Gardens Explore historic gardens that surround a Tudor-style spa bath house and an ornate Mediterranean-style public swimming pool. Originally known as Paepaekumana, this site is of historical importance to local Maori who gifted it in the late 1800s “for the benefit of the people of the world”. In 1908 the New Zealand government opened an elaborate bath house, built in the Elizabethan Tudor style of architecture. Today it is now a museum with an award-winning exhibition on the days when international visitors came to ‘take the waters’. Contact details: Queens Drive www.rotoruamuseum.co.nz

Pig & Whistle After taking in the beauty of Rotorua’s great outdoors, bring your group indoors and enjoy a refreshing drink and meal at a local landmark filled with atmosphere, and historical charm. Winter warmers include burgers, soup, seafood chowder, steak, ribs; curly fries are always good to share and there’s a great kids’ menu. Live bands play every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and with two big screens in the garden bar and five high definition plasma screens in the main bar this is the venue to gather and watch the big games over winter. If your group enjoys bargain hunting beyond the souvenir shops, head to the heart of Rotorua’s main shopping area. The Rotorua Central Mall caters to all your shopping needs, from large national chain stores to smaller, owner-operated retail businesses. Stores include: photography centre, a barber, health shop, clothing, lingerie, footwear, home furnishings, electronic goods, books and stationery, jewellery. And to refuel after finding the bargains, the undercover food court will cater to all tastes: fish & chips, roast chicken, Indian curries, Asian cuisine, fresh sandwiches, and gourmet cookies. Agroventures Adventure Park Get your group to the hub of unique activities that will really keep everyone in your party amused. Hang on while your professional driver takes you on three hot laps of a purpose-built 1km sprint watercourse in a Hamilton Jet Boat; be hoisted 40m skywards with two friends, feel the anticipation before one of you pulls the ripcord and you all plummet towards the earth at 130kmph; try the art of body flying and be suspended on a wind column; or race against the clock on a pedal-powered monorail racetrack. Often called ‘The Great Spa of the South Pacific’, Rotorua’s geothermal water, mineral-enriched muds, Maori massage and indigenous herbs play a special role in local spa culture. Rotorua comes into its own in winter as you can banish the cold-weather blues by soaking in thermally-heated pure spring waters or mellow in a mineral mud bath and truly feel like you’re a world away. On a rainy day, Rotorua can look its ethereal best when the steam mixes with the rain and the raindrops fall on the bubbling mud. For more than 500 years, local Maori have treasured this place of healing and revitalisation, even naming one of the most spectacular springs Wai-O-Tapu (Sacred Waters). Following the lead of Maori, European visitors have ‘taken the waters’ in Rotorua since 1882, when the New Zealand government built several bathhouses, and developed the thermal area as a destination (and in doing so, created the first government tourist office in the world). You can find out more about Rotorua’s spa history at the Rotorua Museum. Rotorua’s role as a place of therapeutic healing is continued at the QE Baths, where the spa treatments and remedial massage are supported by physiotherapy clinicians and a gym.

To complement the wellness-enhancing properties of the waters, many of Rotorua’s spa complexes have beauty and massage therapies available; choose from facials, body scrubs, mud and herbal linen wraps, massages, manicures and pedicures. The range of spa experiences you can have in Rotorua is vast: from outdoor plunge pools in landscaped gardens surrounded by piles of great pumice boulders and overlooking the majestic Lake Rotorua to indoor freshwater pools with a slide for younger members; hot springs milky with minerals or semi-private mineral mud baths, to larger mud pools that cater to groups or families. Recently opened is the Treetops Lodge and Estate’s day spa, where wellness therapies are integrated with a touch of Maori healing culture and indigenous holistic practices. The day spa is available to both lodge guests and visitors alike. Whether it’s an hour or two of relaxation, or a day of indulgence, Rotorua is where you’ll find nature at its wellness-enhancing and revitalising best.

From a traditional Māori hangi to fine dining and ethnic eateries, Rotorua has a delectable range of wining and dining options. With its strong Māori traditions, Rotorua is the ideal place to try some indigenous kai (food). Māori cuisine is enjoying a renaissance as traditional plants and ingredients, such as pikopiko (fern shoots), can be seen more often in contemporary dishes. Many of the tour options to Māori villages include the chance to try a succulent hangi – a traditional feast of meat and vegetables steamed in an underground pit heated by hot rocks. Meats most often used are lamb and pork and you’ll get to taste the traditional New Zealand roast vegetables such as kumara and pumpkin. A hangi takes several hours to cook and the end result has a delicious smoky flavour. Around town, there are more than 50 cafés and restaurants featuring everything from Indian and Moroccan to Italian, European and contemporary New Zealand cuisine. The lake end of Tutanekai Street is a good place to begin exploring, with plenty of options to suit everyone.

Tutanekai Street

Warm yourself with hearty pub food and a pint, or try some of the delicious kormas, kebabs and tandoori dishes on offer at the town’s Indian and Middle-Eastern eateries. You can tempt your tastebuds with tasty tagines and Moroccan tapas, authentic Italian dishes, succulent steaks, and even Japanese/French fusion fare. Sample award-winning fine dining with a breathtaking view of Lake Rotorua, relax at a stylish café or bistro, enjoy the elegance and charm of a country lodge, or soak up the ambience of an English-style pub or Austrian Gasthaus.

The lake end of Tutanekai Street is a good place to begin exploring, with plenty of options to suit everyone.

Rotorua offers a vibrant shopping experience, from galleries and gift shops offering both traditional and contemporary Māori crafts to department stores and fashion boutiques. Rotorua’s city centre has more than 300 retail outlets, from major chain stores and boutiques to specialty stores, galleries and craft outlets. One of the real highlights of shopping here is the superb range of Māori arts and crafts. The city’s galleries, souvenir outlets and gift shops stock some exquisite examples, from beautiful wood carvings inlaid with bone and paua (abalone) to Māori weaving and designer jewellery crafted from natural products like flax, paua, greenstone (jade), gourds, bone and shell. Often carvings have their own special story to tell about the region and its people. Look for the toi iho™, which is used to identify authentic and quality Māori crafts. You can watch the carvers and weavers at work at Mountain Jade and Te Puia, and Tamaki Māori Village also has a fine display of indigenous work. If you’d like to visit some local artists and craftspeople, pick up a copy of the Rotorua Arts Trail from the information centre on Fenton Street.

Other shopping goodies include fashion wear from the country’s leading designers, gems and crystals, contemporary New Zealand art, geothermal cosmetics, New Zealand made souvenirs and skincare products. Overseas visitors who get their purchase sent home directly by the retailer do not have to pay GST.

Rotorua has a long history as a famous spa resort, thanks to the natural therapeutic values of its geothermal springs and mud Maori were the first to discover the curative properties of the region’s hot springs and for more than a century, people have come to Rotorua from all over the world to enjoy the restorative benefits of its thermal water and mud. The city’s heritage Bath House, which now houses the Rotorua Museum, first opened back in 1908. In its heyday, it offered baths, mud treatments and other therapies to some 70,000 people a year. You can still bathe in the thermally heated waters at the restored Blue Baths and take a trip through the old changing rooms – now a museum bringing to life the building’s colourful spa history. Today, the city’s spas and beauty clinics continue to offer a full range of health spa and beauty treatments. Indulge in a luxurious Lithos (stone) massage or relax and enjoy the therapeutic qualities of a natural mud bath or mineral pool. The popular Polynesian Spa has a selection of 26 hot mineral baths perfect for relaxing those tense muscles and you can also enjoy the spa’s legendary Aix Spa massages. Spa at QE offers a range of contemporary treatments making use of the region’s mineral waters and mud.

Banish the winter blues with a dip in a naturally therapeutic mineral pool, and relieve tension with a stone massage.

Accommodation

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments to friendly backpacker hostels; from bright lights city central city to B&B rooms with a view, or conference facilities close to relaxing mud pools, Rotorua has room for you. Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how an accommodation property has been independently rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the room – inspection should be welcome. Hotels generally offer tea/coffee making facilities, a bathroom and an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually offer self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fixed budget, try some of the backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities. Many offer extra facilities such as swimming pools, bars and internet connection. Holiday parks are another good alternative, providing cabins or camping in a more peaceful rural setting, or opt for a taste of luxury at a lakeside lodge or B&B. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To find out more, visit jasons.co.nz/rotorua/accommodation.
