The intersection of Queen Street West and Ossington Avenue is a quite an interesting neighbourhood. It is a west-downtown community in Toronto which was historically occupied mainly by the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health, which had been revitalized and remapped during the past decade. However, a divide between the creative fashion and design industries on the north side of the street and the institutional buildings on the south still exists, with the two having little relation to one another. This project seeks to engage the two communities in the area so that they may develop their correlation through learning more of one another by observing creative works and promoting discussion about the issues of mental health and addiction which continues to be considered taboo in our society. The program of the ground floor, which upper floors look down into, is a large exhibition space with stepped seating to open the floor to discussion about the creative works from the area and the mental health issues. The design strategies promote circulation and interaction which in turn produce dialogue and empathy to better community connections. The sloped massing and angular facades of the library respond to the redirection of pedestrian traffic in a parkette which this project is meant to replace.

BIOLUMINATED OASIS Collaboration with Cathy Oh | April 2016 | Environmental Design | Digital | Adobe Creative Suite, Maxwell, Rhinoceros Description
Throughout the scattered islands of the maritime nation of Maldives, bioluminescent phytoplankton offer unbelievable nighttime views for inhabitants and tourists alike. The expanse of the bioluminescent waves seen from the southern tip of Vaadhoo as ocean waves push the plankton north toward the Indian subcontinent makes it the ideal location for a research station. Bamboo and clay have long been used for structure and envelope in hot-humid vernacular, as these materials have a high resistance to rot and decay. Additionally, bamboo makes for a highly-effective and light framing material comparable in strength to timber. Bamboo can also be used in shading applications in response to overheating and for stilts to prevent damage during monsoon season. Incorporating passive design and systems further enables the project to perform effectively in its location while being comfortable, eco-friendly, and aesthetically-pleasing. Additional space underneath the project allows wind to disperse the moist heat throughout the year. Rainwater collection, solar panels, and solar water heating work especially well in this damp climate near the equator.

URBAN RETREAT November 2015 | 1A Term Design Studio Project | Analog | Graphite on Vellum, Museum Board, Basswood Description
Designed as a meditation and martial arts practice space for a single person, this project plays with compression, expansion, and heights within a provided concrete shell of 4 by 8 by 8 metres. Horizontally, there is a clear distinction between the outside, which acts as an entrance courtyard with a lightwell and a dropped garden, and the inside, which houses the spaces required for practice and meditation. Vertically, the compressed, dark meditation space is placed underneath the tall, well-lit practice space. Doing so distributes daylight and height to each space in accordance to their program needs. On the facade, a window connects the two interior spaces and creates this distribution of daylight. In order to prevent the spaces from overheating, an operable louvred screen is placed on a track outside of the window. The louvres are gradiented so the less sunlight enters toward the ground. The gradient is carried over to the screen separating the courtyard from the street for privacy and the track is also extended to cover the gate.

ARTIST’S RESIDENCE December 2015 | 1A Term Design Studio Final | Analog | Graphite + Watercolour on Vellum, Basswood, Millboard Description
This project is designed as a residence for an artist which can be both isolating from and welcoming of the public. Situated in the forested plateau between a hill and a river bank, the site offers exceptional views. The aim of this project is to assign appropriate views to two geometric shapes of different programs for their differing uses and requirements for privacy. The masses overlap at a circulation core and open up to the river in the northeast direction and the hill in the southwest. In response to the calm, static view of the river, the grounded mass containing the artist’s studio and work spaces focuses in this disturbance-free direction. On the opposite side, the animated mass containing the living spaces for the artist is elevated to face the hill and path to engage in human activities occuring in the park. The building fits perfectly into its forested site without the need to cut down any trees. As a contextual project, the residence is designed to interact with its surroundings and exist peacefully with the enviromental elements.

Transportation is one of the main sources of our carbon emissions today. In major cities like New York, in which traffic congestion is common and the amount of vehicles on the roads is many, an alternative method of transit is needed to combat the growing source of pollution. Cycling is proven to be efficient in transporting people as well as beneficial to the health of the city and its inhabitants. New York is not lacking in bike lanes and infrastructure but unfortunately, these lanes dedicated to biking are often occupied by vehicle, construction, or by the natural expansion of the public space of the sidewalk onto the street and forces cyclists to mingle with the vehicles on the road unsafely. The design of a dedicated cycling corridor, elevated above the street level prioritizes the cyclist and clean methods of transit. It provides safety through its separation, convenience in its accessibility, and a new way to experience the city, high up amongst the skyscrapers. The corridor is a light modular steel structure suspended by cables. The stairs leading up to the main level have a track in which bikes can be conveniently pushed up. The corridor runs along Broadway, the major diagonal street in Manhattan, to service as much of the central area of the city as possible and is integrated into the pre-existing transit. The aim of this structure is to encourage a cycling culture to grow in the city by making the infrastructure available and well designed.

WESTERN TECHNICAL-COMMERCIAL SCHOOL YEARBOOK 2014-2015 June 2015 | Extra-Curricular | Print What began as a proposal for a class project became a yearlong responsibility. The manifesto of this project was simplicity in design to emphasize on quality content; a turn away from distracting yearbook layouts with badly-curated photographs. Although hard work, seeing the smiles on the students’ faces in June made all the overtime hours worthwhile.
This publication received the 2015 Judy Wilson Memorial Award from Scantex Graphics Services. 34

Ongoing | Self-Initiated Project | Print Being born and raised in Canada, I could not help but wonder about the ancestral heritage that I felt I had been lacking experience in my whole life, which included the traditional values of lineage and genealogy. Upon my first trip to China, however, I realized that a majority of my modern paternal relatives were just as ill-informed as I was in what I expected to be an important aspect of Chinese personal history. Fortunately, I was introduced to an extended cousin who kept a small book of the genealogy of my ancestral village written in the early 20th century. My freetime now consists mainly of digitizing the century-old records and drafting drawings of my poorly-mapped native county in hopes to document as much fading knowledge of my roots as possible.
