1 IN T ERPRE T ING T HE PALIMPSEST Industrial Museum + VC School
A palimpsest is a manuscript page, either from a scroll or a book, from which the text has been scraped or washed off so that the page can be reused for another document. Architecture is always connected to the past but it is related to the future as well, we need the past because we need memory, an excessive tradition may kill you or paralyze you, the project aim to achieve balance between memory ”past” the curiosity for “invention“ the unknown”.The project proposes an industrial museum + VC School, unashamedly, caters for the modern age and places adaptation, flexibility and technology at the center of its agenda.

AACUMULATIVE PALIMPSEST Consists of remains from different layers, superimposed on a site, more or less altered and blurred over time. An accumulative palimpsest is interpreted in this scence, project layers overlaps each other, there is the existing layer which is The Ten Arch Bridge and the soft undulating site. The Second layer ( The Plaza ) is an addition which is the lefted horizantal mass where all the social events & activites accour, facing the ten arch bridge. The Third Layer ( The Functional ) an industrial museum + Vocational school, which is represented with the masses above the plaza and with masses that interlocks with it. The Fourth Layer ( The Joint ) is the core of this scene which interlocks the two functional programs togther - The Museum & VC School, it also contatins a two major layers the outdoor audiotorium above & the reception hall below.
13
PALIMPSEST OF T IME Applying the concept of palimpsest we look upon the it, as if all the layers are present and readable simultaneously, knowing that the superimposition of information is the core of the palimpsest concept. A palimpsest of time is interpreted in this scene, by introducing the joint mass, which is the main core of the project. The joint is emphasized in the design by doing the following, placing it in a straticgic location which interlocks both of the functional programs the industrial museum and the V.C school. A special interpretaion of time is out carried by rotating the mass to be directed towards the Ten Arch Bridge, which creates a constant dialouge between the two. The Joint were highlighted by a special material which is the corten steel, a material choosed carefully to contrast the rough texture of the Ten Arch Bridge while also creating a common factor between the two. A celebration occurs here via the inroduced function which is the audiotorium looking the Ten Arch bridge above. As soon as the visitor enters the reception hall which is located under a panoramic scene of the bridges is intorduced to them.
14
15
16
PROJECTS ENTRY POINT The first glimpse that the user of the project will see, whether he is a visitor to the Industrial Museum or a school student, is the extended entrance. The entrance to the project was emphasized by the use of three elements, the first of which is the free standing wall that welcomes the visitor to the project coming by car, the long extended canopy that leads the user to the prjects main entance door, and the last is the use of a shrubs planting grid aligned with the twisted grid. A long axis that takes the visitor of the project to a triple distribution point: The first of these points is the Industrial Museum, where the visitor goes by elevator or stairs to the reception lobby. The second of these activities is the school, where the student or instructor is lead down to the third floor of the school and form it to the other school annexes. The third of these points is the outdoor audiotorium, where the main entrance allows the possibility to go directly to the open amphitheater to participate in a celebration facing the bridge of the ten arches.
17
IN T ERIOR SPACES DESIGN The design language used outside continues to the inside, where the fare face concrete and corten steel were kept visible, an industrial design language was used that suits the industal function and nature of the project. The interior spaces celebrates all the used elements and are keen to show and expose them to the users. principles of collage and juxtaposition were used thus history is seen not as linear phenomena, but as layers of discrepancies between a past event (history) and present recall (memory). 18
19
20
MAIN HALL + DIST. AXES When the visitor descends from the top, he begins his journey, by entering the foyar hall facing the reception counter, a panoramic scene of the ten arch bridge is displayed, The facade of entry to and exit from the reception hall is symmetrically designed, separating the exit and entry block, a glass facade which contains the exposed metal descending staircase. The users move from it to a distrbution axes that takes them to the various parts of the Industrial Museum. This axis is interspersed with corten steel cantlivers that overlooks different parts of the industrial musem. All the systems used, such as lighting and air conditioning, have been exposed to the users as a part of the project nature. Natural lighting penetrates this axes via skylights above. The axis ends up with the main industrial museum event and the core of the exhibition, which is the celebration of the steam train.
21
MUEUM DISPLAY SPACES The visitor completes his tour to move from the main axis to the different museum galleries. These galleries are characterized by exposed systems and intresting various display methods. A Corten steel bridge penetrates these spaces, giving the visitor the ability to discover the Industrial Museum at different angles and levels. Dim lgiht penetrates these galleries from above through small openings in the ceiling slab. These spaces end with the main exhibition space, which contains the focal display piece which is a disassembled suspended train, the visitor can view it closely through the Corten Steel bridge surrounding it. This space is characterized by the huge display walls and the natural lighting that penetrates it from the top.
22
23
THE VOCATIONAL SCHOOL (PALIMPSEST OF MEANING) The project also strive to achieve community and social justice through a socio economic development that aims to up lift the marginalized community through capitalizing on peoples skills. The other part of the project consists of a vocational school that aims to teach local groups various practical skills within a vibrant industrial environment. The school contains a central atrium that cuts through the four floors of the school, allowing natural light to enter from the top to the ground floor. The atrium is pentrated by a suspended sculptural staircase that distributes the users to the various floors of the school. The vocational school is connected to the other project spaces through the Joint. 24
25
2 ARABIAN HORSE CLUB The project is located in the Arabian Horse Club, the project scope was designing the club’s reception building. The project consists of a hall to welcome the guests, a showroom selling all the needs of a horse rider and administration offices for the club. The project was designed in a linear manner to fit with the land extension and In order not to be a visual obstacle for the club’s pioneers. Steel structure building was adopted due to its lightness and to avoid causing a serious damage to the land.

5 BH V ILL A The project is a villa located in Naour Amman, The architectural forms of the building, which primarily consist of two sets of cubic masses linked by a corridor creating an axis which continues in the interior space and ends internally with a metal staircase that takes the user to the first floor, and then goes beyond the building boundaries to the outside to affect the formation of the outdoor pond. The principle of indirect entrance is adopted to create an enjoyable visual journey it also adds a positive impact to the building formation.

The first impression with which the villa receives the viewer relates to its use of materials and color. By rejecting the conventional use of stone in Amman, Instead, the use of earth-toned plastered building for which the subdued hues fit in perfectly well within the dry local landscape and the strong bright Jordanian sun. Plaster finishes are common in Jordan, but generally are used as a cheap alternative to stone. And the project challenges such low-budget connotations, and uses plastering as a high-quality building finish that requires a considerable level of craftsmanship.

Elements are stretched in their linear coverage for cohesiveness expansive horizontal spaces are preserved by undoing unnecessary walls and partitions opening internal space and welding the spatial indoor area with outdoor, the used materials are dark grey paintings and mainly stone mechanical fixings which is related to amman nature and buildings. Steel structure building was adopted due to its lightness and to avoid causing a serious damage to the land, building shed appears as afloating canopy due to the void clerestory curtains below.

TREE OF LIFE SYMBOLISM The first interaction between the user and the hospital happens in the reception hall foyer defined by an elevated tree which is a symbolic meaning of the tree of life. the intent is to create a vibrant welcoming atmosphere for the building users while also providing an intellectual space for such a sensitive and emotional project. This space is manifested by a circle this circular space is the hospital main entry point it contains a tree raised above ground level, axiomatically to create a special vibrant atmosphere but more important intellectual and spiritual theme achieved by unpredictable dialogues between the hospital visitor and the sky.

HOSPITAL ARTIUM SPACE The functions and departments of the project are distributed around a central axis intersecting with the circular void. This axis ends with an external garden. This axis is also characterized by the penetration of natural sunlight for it all the time due to its glass roof. Bridges intersect in this huge volume to transport users between the different hospital spaces with the presence of cantlivers overlooking the void on different project levels appearing from time to time. Introducing hospital circulation, similar to a small village, where the user moves freely between its buildings, a building roofed by the sky !

7 BARJEEL Looking back into the history of Sharjah, the holistic nature of the courtyard strengthened the community of Sharjah and preserved its cultural identity, and engaged its people with a sense of unity and reverence. All of these values came from the spatial geometry, centrality, and the inward-looking spatial concept of the Courtyard. We based our design process on the typology of the Courtyard, to create a space whichhas it’s cultural, social and environmental qualities. The positive void in the heart of thisproject defined by the architectural organization and the wind tower (Barjeel) is celebrating the cultural diversity roofed by the sky and at by the stars.
