Community Profile: Pink Heals................................................................. 4
all is here! Perhaps we don’t feel the arrival of Fall by the change in temperature like our friends in other parts of the country but we certainly see it in the many Fall events and activities for families. At press time, we have over 60 of them listed on our seasonal Fall Festivals & Events page which you’ll find online and always updated at Jax4Kids.com. One of those events is Spooktacular at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. The spectacular Spooktacular begins October 17th. Save $1 off tickets when purchasing online with the coupon available at www.jacksonvillezoo.org. Another event that is fast becoming a family favorite is the Arlington Toyota Kids Fitness Zombie Chase which Jax4Kids.com is proud to sponsor. This year, the event will take place on October 26th at the St. Johns Town Center. Save $5 when you register online and use the code “JAX4KIDS”. You’ll find more discounts on our new “Tidbits” page (page 16) and online at Jax4Kids.com. What makes a community great is its people. If ever there was a shining example of the difference we can make, it’s Pink Heals. You can’t help but be inspired when you read about what they do. Turn to page 4 and be inspired! Included in this month’s issue is the Duval County Public School’s Parent Academy Fall Catalog. These courses, in Student Achievement, Parenting & Advocacy and Personal & Individual Growth, are a valuable resource and they are free! You’ll find the course offerings on pages 17-23. Our hat is off to the DCPS Department of Family and Community Engagement and their many participating partners for putting this excellent resource together to support the education, growth, and well-being of families.

Living well other than giving it back to help families. From time to time we look to local businesses to be lead supporters for Pink Heals events such as a 5K or pink truck pulls. We also look to local business to step up and help us complete repairs for family homes, and vehicles of those directly affected by life-threatening illnesses.
Community Profile: Pink Heals Q. What does your organization do? A. We provide home visits and use our fire truck and patrol car to fundraise money for local individuals and local charities that promise to use no more than 10% for administrative costs.
causes. We refer to our country as a “She”; she has always given us something to fight for, if we take care of her she will then take care of us! This is why our program believes that the best way to take care of “Her” is to take care of the entire family: the women, men and children of this country.
For those battling cancer or any other life-threatening illness, we will be happy to load up our pink fire truck and pink patrol car and bring the hope, Q. How do you do it? (Where? When? How
We sell clothing and merchandise to raise money for our operating costs (fuel for the vehicles, insurance, vehicle maintenance, etc). Additionally we look to businesses in the community to help us defer the costs associated with repairs on the truck and car. Q. How long have you been in operation? A. We just celebrated our 2nd anniversary on July 27th of this year.
bathroom had been leaking for some time and was coming down the wall into the master bedroom causing mold to grow inside the wall and paneling in the 70+ year old home where it was almost disintegrating. They went over and assessed the damage and repairs needed. Without us knowing the two businesses went ahead and remodeled the bathroom and bedroom. The companies worked with her homeowners insurance and then kindly donated all material and labor not covered by insurance. The second was a very kind and generous donation made from the owner of the St. Augustine Sonny’s BBQ restaurants and the owner of Endorphin Famers, also a St. Augustine business. We have a young mother that is battling breast cancer and was having to travel to
Q. How can the community at large get involved generally? A. We are always happy to have volunteers come out to bigger events to help us with merchandise sales, or welcoming visitors to the truck and car. We also encourage local businesses to call us and find out how we can work together to help support local groups and organizations within the community. Q. What is your greatest need right now? love, and support to the front door of the patient. We want them to know nobody fights alone and they are loved beyond their imagination. Friends and family can contact us to arrange a home visit. Bringing love and smiles to those that need it most is just one small thing we do. We do not feel anyone should have to choose between putting food on their table, clothes on the children and a roof over their head, or paying for life saving treatments and medication. So we raise funds and work with local organizations to help with these needs. Upon request, we will bring our pink fire truck, Ashley, and pink patrol car, Jamey Jo, to private and public events and fundraisers to help raise awareness and support for that event or person. (All vehicles in Pink Heals chapters are named after a woman in the community that either has or had cancer, and whose character and values represents the Pink Heals Mission.) Our only requirements for truck and car appearances is that all money raised will be used in the community where it is raised, and no more than 10% will be used for administrative costs.
frequently? And with what tools?) A. Pink Heals’ mission to be a 100% volunteer organization means that every cent of the donations we receive goes to the families and people that need it. We are firefighters and law enforcement officers that volunteer our time to support those fighting for their lives against all cancers and any other life threatening illness, by bringing awareness through faith, hope and love. We are strictly volunteers, so no money is ever used to pay salaries, EVER!! Donation dollars are never used for anything
Pink Heals is not just in support of women with breast cancer. We support everyone battling any cancer - men, women and children. Our truck and car are pink, because the color of pink represents love and hope. We have taken the theme of Public Safety with pink fire trucks and pink police cars to serve our community by putting people first instead of

A. Our greatest need currently is funds to continue to help families. Q. What has been your greatest accomplishment (this past year or ever)? A. In our chapter’s two short years, we have put over $15,000 back into the community through direct monetary assistance and donated services from our community business supporters. Two accomplishments that standout for us are two donations from four local businesses. The first was from Stanford Restoration and Reconstruction and 1-800-BOARD-UP. We asked them to give us an estimate to repair a bathroom and master bedroom of a cancer patient. The upstairs
the panhandle for her treatments. By her 5th treatment the six hour one-way car ride was getting to be very difficult for her and due to her appointment schedule and treatment regimen she would have to be away from her children and home for three to four days. I approached these two business owners, who co-own a small plane together and asked them if they would consider helping us get this young woman to her appointment for a reasonable cost. To our amazement these two wonderful men agreed to fly her and her husband to her treatment for free. They donated their time and the cost of the flight. They even went a step further and said they would like to fly her to her last treatment. So her six hour car ride turned into one and one half hour plane trip and just an overnight stay. To say we were deeply moved by the kindness and generosity of these four businesses is an understatement. FALL INTO A NEW SMILE!
health & safety
October is National Orthodontic Health Month Why you should get orthodontic treatment
T
he goal of orthodontic treatment is a beautiful smile and a good bite—meaning straight teeth that mesh well with the teeth in the opposite jaw and look great. A good bite makes it easier for you to bite, chew and speak. Many people find a beautiful smile adds to self-esteem, self-confidence and leads toward career advancement. Orthodontic treatment is often part of a comprehensive dental health care plan. With good care, including orthodontic treatment when necessary, teeth can last a lifetime. Treatment in children or teenagers who are still growing may yield results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have completed their growth. All kids should get a check-up with an Orthodontist no later than age 7. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that your child get a check-up with an orthodontist at the first recognition of the existence of an orthodontic problem, but no later than age 7. By then, your child has enough permanent teeth for an Orthodontist to determine whether an orthodontic problem exists or is
developing. Putting off a check-up with an orthodontist until a child has lost all baby teeth could be a disservice. Some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if they’re found early. If you recognize any of these signs or concerns in your child or yourself, it might be time to schedule a consultation with an orthodontist. • Early or late loss of baby teeth
• Protruding teeth • Teeth that meet in an abnormal way or don’t meet at all • Facial imbalance or asymmetry (features out of proportion to the rest of the face) • Grinding or clenching of teeth • Inability to comfortably close lips
• Sucking the thumb or fingers, or other oral habits

A Day to Focus on Your Family’s Health M Get Your Children Moving
onday October 6th is Child Health Day. It’s a special day set aside to focus on children’s health and well-being and was established in 1928 by Calvin Coolidge through presidential proclamation. Here are some powerful words, taken from his proclamation: WHEREAS the protection and development of the health of the children of today are fundamental necessities to the future progress and welfare of the Nation;
AND WHEREAS, the conservation and promotion of child health places upon us a grave responsibility; AND WHEREAS, it is appropriate that a day should be set apart each year for the direction of our thoughts towards the health and well-being of our children; NOW, therefore, I, Calvin Coolidge, President of the United States of America, do hereby set apart….Child Health Day and do invite the people of the United States and all agencies and organizations interested in child welfare to unite upon that day in the observance of such exercises as will acquaint the people of the Nation with the fundamental necessity of a year-round program for the protection and development of the health of the Nation’s children.

We are all busy juggling the responsibilities of family, work, home, etc. And it’s easy to let routine care appointments slip through the cracks. So let’s do this: On October 6th, set aside some time in your busy day to make those needed doctor, dentist, or vision appointments. And while you’re at it, go ahead and update the emergency contact list you have posted on the refrigerator and the ones on your mobile phone. Include numbers for Poison Control, the local police and fire department, your pediatrician, doctor, hospital, local emergency room, and important family numbers. Give a call to your pediatrician to ask if your child’s immunizations are up to date and if your child has allergies, ask your doctor if he/she can prescribe a medical bracelet for your child to wear.
Let today be the day you model good exercise habits for your kids. Ride a bike with them after work or play a game of Frisbee in the backyard. Set aside a few minutes at bedtime to tell your teen he or she is loved and that you want to talk to them about tough decisions. These simple actions taken today could be what set you and your family on a path to better health together tomorrow. Plus, it’ll feel great. j
From the mind of a child…creative ways to get exercise: • Roller blade. • Jump on a trampoline. • Race your dog. • Sword fight with light sabers. • Race through your own obstacle course. (Compete against a parent, friend, sister, or brother.) Try these obstacle course stations: • Hula hoop • Horseshoes/ring toss/beanbag toss • Jump rope • Potato sack race • Swim across an inflatable pool • Jumping Jacks

Sports Nutrition for Kids – Hit a Home Run! F or many, this time of year means the start of sports-related activities. When it comes to sports and kids, many parents are concerned that their children are not (1) getting the most nutritious foods and (2) not getting enough calories and/or fluids to perform their best. Let’s take a look at all the nutrients required by child athletes. Carbohydrates – the fuel Carbohydrates are the main source of fuel for muscles during exercise. Children should be offered carbohydrate-rich foods at each meal and snack. Healthy carbs include things like wholegrain pasta and rice, whole-grain cereals and crackers, whole-wheat bread, tortillas, bagels, low fat muffins, granola bars, pretzels, low-fat yogurt, skim or 1% milk, fruits, and 100% fruit juices. All of these provide carbohydrates for fuel before and after exercise.
about ¼ of their plate. Good sources of protein include fish, chicken, turkey, eggs, cheese, fat free or 1% milk, low-fat yogurt or dried beans and legumes.
Fat – some is good, too much is not Some fat in the diet is necessary for good health and is also used as a source of energy during exercise and recovery. Healthy fats can be found in nuts, seeds, peanut butter, olive oil, canola oil, trans-free margarine, and fatty fish like salmon. Some unhealthy fats to avoid include whole milk, fatty meats, coconut oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, and trans-fats (aka hydrogenated fats) which are found in many commercially-prepared foods.
Hydrate – morning, noon and night Sports drinks such as PowerAde or Gatorade contain carbohydrates (sugar) and electrolytes (sodium and potassium) that are recommended to Protein – the building block help active children stay hydrated, particularly for Protein is important for muscle building and endurance exercise and high-intensity exercise, proper immune function. However, too much and especially while exercising in the heat. Sports protein can actually impair athletic performance. drinks are most beneficial right before, during Child athletes get all the protein they need when and after exercise, but are not needed all day eating a well-balanced and varied diet. Make sure long for the best results. Young athletes should protein is a small part of every meal and snack, be encouraged to drink 4 to 8 ounces of a sports
drink every 15-20 minutes during exercise.
juice, pretzels, graham crackers or a raisin bagel.
Vitamins and Minerals – essential for good health Physically active children typically come closer to meeting their requirements for vitamins and minerals than their non-athlete counterparts. This is because they tend to eat more often between exercise, and so key vitamins and minerals are obtained through the diet. The exception to this rule may be calcium. Many children are replacing their milk intake with sodas, putting themselves at risk for calcium deficiency. Make sure to include calcium-rich foods such as low fat milk, yogurt, cheese, fortified soy milk, and dark green leafy vegetables in your child’s diet, and limit the sodas for an occasional treat!
Fifteen to sixty minutes after the event, a snack or meal should be provided which includes protein and carbohydrates to replenish energy stores and repair muscle damage. Ideas include chocolate milk, peanut butter on a banana, turkey and cheese on a whole-wheat wrap, or spaghetti with meat sauce. j
Eat often – continuous fuel for moving bodies Active children need to eat often to fuel their smaller bodies for physical activity – a small meal or snack every 3 to 4 hours is a good rule of thumb. A snack 30 minutes before exercise should be high in carbohydrate and low in protein, low in fat and low in fiber so that it’s easier to digest and won’t cause stomach upset. Preevent suggestions include a piece of fruit, fruit

They are also called corn snakes for a few reasons: Their bellies remind people of an ear of corn due to their belly scales being checkered. They also like to live in corn fields because, like most snakes, they prefer to dine on rodents, who also inhabit the fields. Red rat snakes will also occasionally eat lizards, birds, or bird eggs. Red Rate Snakes have distinctive red, orange, and black scaled backs. You can find a variety of different colored rat (corn) snakes here at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens when visiting the Wild Florida exhibit, or see our Red rat snake animal ambassador named LeRoux in our education programs. j

infant & toddler
….a program to help parents, grandparents, and other caregivers keep infants safe and secure during their first months.
Reading for the Heart, Soul, and Mind A
special journey begins when babies hear words for the first time. The precious verbal interaction that continues between caregivers and their children is a vital building block to understanding and using language - a key to academic success for all children. Parents and caregivers can play a crucial role in their child’s development by reading to them from the day they are born. When you read books to your infant or toddler, you are not only developing a special emotional bond; you are giving them an important tool for self-expression and communication with others.
• •
• •
Listed below are various ways to create language-rich reading experiences with your child: • Establish a reading time each day and stick to a routine. • Pick a comfortable environment, free of distractions, and make it your special time. • Try to select a variety of books but if your child expresses interest in favorite books, acknowledge his or her interest by re-reading those loved books. • Choose books that offer textures, sounds, are colorful, and have lots of pictures with accompanying words. Such books will allow both you and your infant to engage in shared, multi-sensory experiences. • Place your baby’s hand on textured components of the book and describe the actions or objects on each page as you and your baby continue through the book together. • Talk to your child as you describe what you are doing together while looking at the book. • Make your own books with colored
•
construction paper, recycled magazines for pictures, glue and a pair of scissors. Designate a shelf just for your child’s books and reference this shelf as his or her library. Library has more than one meaning! Teach them the alphabet song and some letters from the song. The Florida ABCs song is a fun way to sing the alphabet and teach your child about our beautiful state. You’ll find it on You Tube. Identify/trace/write the letters of his or her name so that connections can be made between letters and sounds. Make your environment print-rich by hanging up as many visuals with print as possible: a calendar in the kitchen a weekly activities agenda with family members names, seasonal decorations with print in the family room, a banner for the child’s room with his or her name on it, positive affirmations, reward stickers. Take your child to the public library, which is free! Weekly story time activities are often scheduled for children of all ages.
In summary, reading to your child is one of the most important experiences that you can share together. By sharing experiences with your little one, you help nourish your child’s soul with descriptive and colorful images, ultimately preparing them for academic and personal success in the future. j
Northeast Florida has an infant mortality rate higher than the state or national rate. Kohl’s Ready, Set, Sleep is designed to address this concern because there is a lot you can do to help get your baby off to a healthy start! Pediatricians recommend infants sleep on their backs, close to their moms, but in their own separate, safe sleep environment. Other recommendations include breastfeeding, getting baby’s immunizations, and knowing infant CPR. If you need information about keeping your baby safe while sleeping or about other safety concerns for the first year, please visit our website, wolfsonchildrens.org/readysetsleep

St. Johns County School District News About James
New Logo
The St. Johns County School District (SJCSD), in conjunction with the Dalton Agency, has created a new logo that made its debut on Tuesday, September 2 during the SJCSD School Board Workshop. While the current logo has been a long standing brand for the SJCSD, the new “crest” logo represents the focus on high achievement throughout the district. The historical lighthouse is an element that was incorporated from the previous logo that defines St. Augustine and serves as a highlight of St. Johns County. “This logo signifies the high expectations of the district and pays homage to our history as a public school system,” said Superintendent Dr. Joseph Joyner. The new logo will appear on letterhead, business cards, print and promotional materials. It will be phased in as materials bearing the previous logo are used or must be renewed due to other changes and/or requirements.
A native of St. Augustine, James “Jim” Browning graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1971. He then went on to graduate from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. For the past 30 years he has been an active contributor in his community, accepting leadership roles in numerous civic activities. Over the past three years Browning has served as chairman of The Governor’s Reception at The Players, an idea developed by Browning and The Players executive director. As chairman of the Committee of 100, Browning successfully negotiated the transaction for St. Johns County to move the international headquarters of the Men’s Professional Tennis (ATP TOUR) to Ponte Vedra Beach.
Presently, Browning is immediate past chairman of the St. Johns County Industrial Development Authority. He is past president of The Blood Bank of St. Johns, Epic Community Services, St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce, Committee of 100, St. Johns County Economic Development Council and is a member of the Ponte Vedra Rotary Club. This year, the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners declared March 2014 James E. Browning Month. Members from the chapter will attend the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, in late October to present information about their events from last year, in hopes of being named the top Outstanding Middle School Chapter. This
is the highest honor a middle school FFA chapter can achieve. “I am really proud of the students, said FFA Advisor, Laura Rogers. “They met and exceeded every goal they set for themselves. To be named Florida’s finest is a huge honor [and] to find out we are in the top 5 nationally is beyond words.”
• Get 60 minutes of physical activity each day to include jumping jacks for 2 minutes, 4 days a week. • Make half your plate fruits & vegetables. This month’s mission for our “Delicious Discoverers” is to take on the challenge and try cucumbers as part of your healthy plate!

Prices Reduced for Florida Prepaid College Plans P rices for the most popular Florida Prepaid College Plans will drop to their lowest levels since 2007 and nearly $200 million will be refunded to about 18,000 families, after the Florida Prepaid College Board approved prices for the 2014/15 Open Enrollment period. The historic changes are the result of a new state law that helps lower future costs at State Universities in Florida. “With this change in law, we are able to reinforce
and continue our mission to provide Floridians with affordable college savings options,” said Board Chairman Duane Ottenstroer. “The lower prices mark a major milestone in the history of Florida Prepaid, and more importantly, a milestone in the path of opportunity for Florida students and their families.” When Open Enrollment begins on Oct. 15, 2014, families will have the opportunity to purchase a 4-Year Florida University Plan without any change in Plan coverage for as low as $173 a month or a 2 + 2 Florida Plan for as low as $136 a month. These prices reflect up to a 50 percent decrease from last year.
recent years will benefit from the lower prices as well. They will have their monthly payments reduced or receive refunds if their Plans are paid-in-full. Approximately 18,000 families are expected to receive refunds totaling almost $200 million. More than22,000 families will see a reduction in their monthly payments and realize more than $700 million in savings over the lifetime of their Plans. The Plans impacted are those purchased since 2008 that include a Tuition Differential Fee component.
“These families have worked hard to save for their children’s college education, and we are so pleased to be able to support their efforts by responding quickly to the changes in state tuition policy,” said Board Executive Director Kevin Thompson. “For our families, we know that every dollar saved matters.” The dramatic reduction in prices is tied directly to the new law created by House Bill 851 and the fact that it reduces the maximum annual increase of the Tuition Differential Fee to six percent for preeminent State Universities and zero percent for all other State Universities. Previously, the Tuition Differential Fee could increase by up to 15 percent annually at all State Universities.
Eligible Account Owners can expect to receive notification from the Board this month regarding their specific refund and/or payment reduction For the first time ever, the Board will also offer a information. Discussion-Based Teaching: The Harkness Method I n early 1930, philanthropist Edward Harkness gave a substantial donation to New Hampshire’s Phillip Exeter Academy. He wrote a letter to the principal of the school offering a suggestion on how the money might be used. He wrote, “What I have in mind is a classroom where students could sit around a table with a teacher who would talk with them and instruct them by a sort of tutorial or conference method, where each student would feel encouraged to speak up. This would be a real revolution in methods.”
The illustration to the left shows the difference between a traditional classroom setting and a Harkness setting. Central to the Harkness Method is the Harkness Table, an oval table that enables everyone to be eye to eye during discussion. With everyone equally visible, everyone is expected to participate and interact. When Mr. Harkness tried out the first table, he couldn’t see the eyes of every other person around the table. He wondered how they would have a meaningful discussion if he couldn’t see all of their eyes. So he had the table redesigned to be an oval-shape. However there was still a problem. The oval tables were too big to fit through the doorways. So Harkness had the builders bring their materials to the classrooms and had them construct the tables inside.
This is how the Harkness Method of teaching was born. The Harkness Method is discussion-based teaching that fosters collaboration among students and develops critical thinking skills. The teacher and students sit around an oval table designed to facilitate conversation. It is a classroom version of debate team, except it is not heated, rather it is open-minded discussion meant to help the student learn. Teachers pose problems and ask questions in a way that allows students to make meaning of new information together by talking, by listening, and ultimately by thinking. The Harkness method teaches students how to learn rather than just what to learn.
More than 80 years later, the Harkness method is now used at many educational institutions in the United States and around the globe. One local school that uses this method is the Episcopal School of Jacksonville. j Some describe the Harkness Method as a way of being…of interacting with other minds, listening carefully, speaking respectfully, accepting
new ideas and questioning old ones, using new knowledge, and enjoying the richness of human interaction.

Building Background Knowledge for Complex Texts
M
ost high school students can comprehend current young adult books such as “Divergent” and “The Fault in Our Stars” with little effort. When it comes to more complex texts, however, the same students sometimes cry “I don’t get it.” I’m currently teaching the novel “Silas Marner” to a group of sophomores. With its syntax (the way the words are arranged), vocabulary and setting, “Silas Marner” requires effort from today’s readers. The novel was published in 1861 by George Eliot (pen name for Mary Ann Evans), and it tells the tale of a lonely weaver named Silas Marner. Marner lives in a small English village in the early 1800s. Hoping to prevent hearing “I don’t get it” from students, we worked together to build background knowledge before we started the book. We did this by learning about England’s economy, culture and class system in the early 1800s. Here are a few more strategies we used. Compare and contrast book covers. We didn’t judge “Silas Marner” by its cover. Instead, we examined covers from several editions of the book. Then, we compared and contrasted the covers and made inferences about the story before we began reading. Students figured out several elements of the story in this way. You can do something similar with your children at home. If they have been assigned a complex text, ask them to find six or eight covers for the book in an Internet search engine. Then, ask your student to think about why certain elements were included on the cover. Your student may then wish to make inferences about the book’s characters, setting or plot.
Share aspects of life from when the book was written and where the story is set. Since Eliot wrote the book during the Victorian Era (18371901), we explored the arts and culture, the stage of industrialization and the fashions of the time. When I showed them pictures of children working in coal mines, I noticed their interest rise. Eliot chose to set the book about fifty or so years before she wrote it. So, we built background knowledge of the early 1800s in England as well. We discussed tenant farming and various trades to try to build understanding of the economy of the time. Connect the background of the book to your child’s interests. To further build background knowledge and since the main character is a weaver, we learned about looms, yarn, warp and weft and more. We even conducted hands-on sessions teaching knitting, looming and weaving. Several students have continued knitting and looming on their own after learning about it for our study of the novel. You can do the same at home. If your student is assigned a complex text to read for school, please consider helping your child build background knowledge so they can understand the text. It’s an effective way to help your child build reading comprehension skills and enjoy what they read more. As an added bonus, they may say, “I don’t get it” less frequently. j Nancy Lee Bethea Nancy Lee Bethea teaches English to students in grades 9-12 at Sonshine Christian Academy in Callahan, Florida. A professional special effects artist is normally trained in a number of fields. Q. What are some of your responsibilities? A. My responsibilities include helping clients come up with awesome ideas, sculpting busts that will become masks, making molds, sewing costumes, CLEANING up after myself, and most importantly keeping my customers happy. Q. What do you like most about your job? A. The thing I love most about my job is, that even though there is a lot of hard work involved, I hardly ever feel like I’m working. I get to make monsters all day every day. Who could get tired of that? Disability Awareness at School and at Home
D
uring the first two weeks in October, Florida schools promote disability awareness in their classrooms. This special time of awareness and education was founded through a Florida law in 2008. According to a letter written by Dr. Joseph G Joyner, St Johns County School District Superintendent, during this time “students will benefit from learning about the story of people with disabilities, including how they used to be viewed and treated, how conditions have changed over time and how individuals with disabilities are currently actively involved in self-advocacy and in their communities. Given the context of disability history, students will be equipped with the tools needed to engage in critical thinking and will be more likely to view individuals with disabilities as people deserving of dignity and respect just like everyone else.” Jax4Kids uncovered some fun online activities at PBSKids.org to help you continue and reinforce this positive learning at home. Bird Ownership B irds can be a true joy to have as pets. They are pleasing to look at as they fly about, perch on your finger, and crack open their seeds. But it’s important know when you purchase a bird that you should have bird expectations and not the expectations you would have for a cat or a dog. For example, when you bring a puppy home, assuming he’s been raised in a loving environment, he will come to you without hesitation and will probably delight in your company. Most birds in pet stores do not get a lot of socialization time with people and are also naturally sensitive so when you bring your bird home, you’ll have to take things slow at first and work to build your bird’s trust. Keep in mind also that dogs are a domesticated species. Bird species in pet stores are the same species that exist in the wild. We look like predators to them, so building trust is essential. With bird species like parakeets or cockatiels, once you do build their trust, they will readily come to you and can enjoy human company very much (and will actually need human companionship if they do not have another friend of their own species to keep them company.)
pets like dogs or cats is that birds (at least the parakeets and cockatiels that I have interacted with) cannot control their bowel movements. With their high metabolism, they go to the bathroom as often as every 5 to 10 minutes, whether in the cage or perched on your finger. This is a part of bird ownership that can’t be changed. The good news though, is that you as the pet owner can learn to anticipate when your bird will use the bathroom and be ready to quickly place her over a paper towel. Observe your bird for a while and you will start to notice signs that they’re going to go (like ruffling their tail feathers for example). And they may even go at regular timed intervals.
There is much more to know about bird ownership such as the amount of social time they will need or considerations like cage maintenance and types of toys. Here are a few great resources as you continue to learn about the joys and unique experience of owning birds: www.humanesociety.org/animals/pet_birds/tips/ bird_care.html pets.petsmart.com/guides/birds/caring-for-yourbird.shtml www.aspca.org/pet-care/small-pet-care/ general-bird-care birds.about.com/od/behaviorandtraining/a/ Another major difference between birds and other pottytraining.htm j
