For Some, Skeeter Syndrome Means Severe Allergic Reaction

A

small, red dot accompanied by a bit of itchiness are symptoms most people experience after a pesky mosquito feasts on their blood. Some people hardly notice any reaction at all. However, for others, mosquito bites can escalate from a mere annoyance to a severe allergic reaction known as skeeter syndrome. Those most at risk for a severe reaction include people with immunodeficiency, young children and people visiting areas with indigenous mosquitoes that they haven’t been previously exposed to, according to medical researchers from Canada’s University of Manitoba. “When they bite you, not only are they piercing the skin, but they inject their saliva,” said Dr. Karen McKenzie, director of entomology at Dynatrap, a company that produces mosquito and other flying insect repellent devices without zapping or chemicals. “The saliva helps lubricate the mosquito’s stylet, or its mouthparts, so it’s easier to get into your skin,” McKenzie said. The saliva then carries proteins into the body. Skeeter syndrome is the result of the allergic reaction to

proteins in mosquito saliva, according to the Mayo Clinic. “If people are allergic or sensitive, they get a large reaction, the body starts sending histamine and the body starts swelling in that area,” said McKenzie, whose own daughter’s skin reacts to mosquito bites with small bumps all over. “When a person’s skin develops large welts and a significant amount of itchiness, it’s more likely that the person is allergic to mosquito bites,” she added. There isn’t a simple blood test that detects mosquito antibodies in the blood. Instead, mosquito allergies are diagnosed by figuring out if the large, itchy, red and irritated areas of swelling occurred after being bitten by a mosquito. Stronger reactions of skeeter syndrome are much more common in children, and younger kids are more susceptible to severe reactions than older kids, according to Jorge Parada, professor of medicine at Loyola University Chicago and medical advisor for the National

“Even people who have bad reactions as young kids tend to have them less severely when they’re older,” Parada said. “I’ve noticed that with my son, who frequently used to get a 4-inch welt after a mosquito bite, [now only gets welts that are about 2 inches].”

McKenzie advised that people aware of a mosquito bite allergy carry an EpiPen with them, especially if living in mosquito hot spots like Florida.

Parada added that severe reactions to bites don’t normally become life-threatening. However, some people can experience a rare, potentially deadly condition called anaphylaxis that triggers wheezing and throat swelling.

Experts also advised wearing Environmental Protection Agency-approved repellents like picaridin and DEET. Higher concentrations of DEET shouldn’t be used on small children, according to Parada.

Wearing long sleeves, long pants and light colors are advised when outdoors in mosquito-prone areas. Checking your home for “If you start getting itchiness in your throat, standing water can also prevent mosquitoes eyes, have any kind of trouble breathing or have an immediate reaction like huge swelling from lingering around your yard. at a bite site with any of those other factors, get “You can buy pre-treated clothing that has to the emergency room, as it can escalate insect repellent,” said Parada, who recomquickly,” said McKenzie, whose friend once required a trip to the ER following a mosquito mended this option because the repellent is bite. typically effective through about 30 washes. j “If bitten, applying calamine lotion or other ashleywilliams/accuweather.com non-prescription hydrocortisone creams can reduce itching and swelling,” Parada said. I

t’s that time of year again. Time to think about school starting and all the craziness that surrounds those first few weeks of school. School supplies, new clothes and shoes, and trendy backpacks are at the top of everyone’s list. But what about your child’s lunch? When you’re preparing for school lunches, here are some simple rules to keep in mind when shopping to prevent lunchbox failure. 1. Choose Whole Grains: Wheat tortillas for sandwich wraps, whole grain breads and crackers make for a great start to building a healthy lunch. Pair whole grain crackers with cheese or hummus and now you have a winning combination of protein and healthy grains. 2. Choose fresh fruits: Pre-packaged sliced apples, mandarin oranges, a small banana, grapes or sliced strawberries add a little sweetness as well as vitamins and fiber to your child’s lunch. I like to buy small plastic containers (you can even find them at the dollar store) for lunches to hold anything from cut up fruits and veggies to hummus or dipping sauce. 3. Choose fresh veggies: Usually the most difficult to in corporate into your child’s diet, make veggies more appealing by cutting/ slicing into small pieces and providing ranch dip as a side. 4. Choose a protein: Protein sources include peanut butter (try natural peanut butter), hard-boiled eggs, tuna, cheese, deli meat, hummus, Greek-style yogurt or tofu.

Take all these steps together and it looks something like this: Start with a wheat tortilla wrap and add a thin layer of mayonnaise or yogurt-based salad dressing (like Greek-Yogurt Ranch). Next add sliced turkey, followed by sliced avocado, chopped lettuce and a little shredded cheese. Roll up and cut in half. This provides protein, healthy fats and carbohydrate to fuel your child through the rest of the afternoon. Make another one for yourself if you’re heading out to work! Or try mixing natural peanut butter (or almond butter) with a little honey and send in a small container with sliced apples for dipping. This provides needed protein and natural carbohydrates that your child will need throughout the day. Don’t forget one of the most important details of your child’s lunch - the freezer pack. Cold foods need to stay cold to prevent food-borne illness, so make sure your protein foods (except for nut-butters) mentioned above can stay cold until lunchtime. Hope your child has a healthy and happy new school year! j Aurea Thompson MSH, RDN, CSP, LDN Board Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition Wolfson Children’s Hospital

INFANT & TODDLER New Parent’s Guide to Social Media

W

ith so many options for bragging, sharing, and finding support when it comes to kids, navigating the ever-shifting landscape of social media safely, responsibly, and productively takes some reflection and planning. Before baby, you were a Facebooking, Instagramming, texting fool, sharing everything. Now, looking at your little bundle of joy, you may be wondering: What’s OK to share, and what’s TMI? Think through your posts, really. To you, an ultrasound image or the story of baby’s first giggle is the most precious thing ever. To the rest of the world, it’s just content. Avoid “over-sharenting.” What’s over-sharenting? Pictures of poop, constant updates on every gurgle, livestreams of intimate moments such as breastfeeding, bath time, and potty training. Be thoughtful about what you’re sharing and how often. Know when to go to the pros. It’s fine to get input from your online pals, but for anything that has major importance – feeding, health and safety, money, education – call your pediatrician, child care provider, financial

advisor, or your mom. Be careful about baby’s “digital footprint.” Some parents create social media profiles for their babies with the idea their kids will use them when they turn 13 (the age of consent for social media). While it can be fun for relatives to get an update “from baby,” a profile creates a digital footprint, which invites data tracking, marketing, and other privacy issues. Be Practical. Join a photo-storage service. You’ll post about 7 billion photos of your kid before they’re out of diapers. Photo-storage platforms have the advantage of free or low-cost storage, plus the ability to share with only certain people or groups.

highly curated photos and posts from friends whose lives seem more fulfilling can make you feel sad, jealous and angry. Unfollow anyone who doesn’t make you feel good. Tweak your settings. Most social platforms allow you to hide posts (see fewer posts from someone); snooze (temporarily stop seeing posts); mute (turn someone off for a while); and do not disturb (temporarily block a person). Manage notifications. Constant pings on your phone can overwhelm and distract you. You can turn off notifications entirely, allow only important ones, or batch them so you receive them on a schedule. If you feel crappy more than you feel good, and sharing photos from your life doesn’t make you feel better, talk to a professional about what you’re going through.

Preserve memories digitally. You can do this a few ways. Some parents like to grab the opportunity to create an email account under baby’s name. Collecting messages, photos, and videos all in one place. Or, consider an electronic scrapbook or journal, which offer a secure way to collect and share.

Find real, meaningful online support. There are some really supportive online groups with active, engaged members. • BabyCenter – You’re bound to find support at this highly regarded site, which welcomes all kinds of families into its highly specialized groups. Protect your well-being. Get rid of triggers. The • Café Mom – Conversation, advice, and

original programming help you feel welcome right away. • Circle of Moms – A large, active site brimming with hundreds of specialized communities you can search for alphabetically. • Mothering – If you’re into natural, holistic parenting, Mothering is the place to find support. This site offers communities for all kinds of families, from single parents to LGBTQ parents. • PopSugar Family – For moms who like a heavy dose of pop culture with their parenting advice. • Scary Mommy –. Known for its no-holdsbarred conversations, Scary Mommy hosts an anonymous “confessional” where parents can express deep, dark secrets. It welcomes anyone who likes to “say it like it is.” For dads: Fatherly, National At-Home Dad Network and All Pro Dad have supportive communities for new fathers. j commonsensemedia.org

Creating a Print-Rich Environment in Your Home

I

n past columns, I’ve shared ways parents can help their kids read and write better. From writing stories together to reading aloud to our kids, a parent’s role is vital in developing literate kids. After all, parents are their children’s first teachers. This means parents have the power to guide their kids into good literacy habits from an early age. One proven (and easy) way to foster literacy growth in your kids is to create a print-rich environment at home. Simply put, a print-rich environment is one in which children have access to multiple texts of different types. Magazines, comic books, graphic novels, and chapter books are just some of the texts you can provide easily and cheaply (or free) for your children.

in her bathroom, the box contains magazines and books. About once a week, we check out fresh books from our local library. Sometimes, Hayden picks out books she wants to read. Other times, I choose books I think she’ll like. I then place two or three fresh books in her basket. By doing this, I continually expose her to new genres and different titles. She has not read every book I’ve put in her basket, but she has read many of them, some more than once! This summer, I placed another book basket in our living room. I put the Sunday newspaper, fresh library books, and free magazines I find at our local library in it. We’ve all been reading more because of the availability of good reading material.

In our home, we’ve created a print-rich environment Bookshelves for our daughter in three major ways.
