ommunities In Schools of Jacksonville has kept students in our city on track for graduation for almost 30 years. Its programs impact struggling students through case management, literacy tutoring and after-school programs by working with school administration, teachers, parents and neighborhood partners – other nonprofits, local government, businesses, and civic organizations – to keep students becoming successful adults who are able to contribute positively to the community.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Choose a Healthy 2020

R

eady for some dietary changes this year? Want a healthier outlook for you and your family in 2020? The definition of a habit is “a settled tendency or usual manner of behavior.” So, in other words, changes that stick with you are called habits, and good habits take repetition to form. If you are ready for a change, try from the suggestions below to get started on the road to a healthier new year. Some changes may take more practice than others to keep going, but the payoffs to your health are well worth the effort! • Cut saturated fat by switching from whole or 2% cow’s milk to 1% or skim milk. • Try “Meatless Mondays”: plant-based dinners which are overall lower in saturated fat and higher in fiber. • Pick a new fruit or vegetable and use in a recipe each week. • Let the kids pick a color themed-vegetable one night each week for dinner. For example, on a “yellow night” you would

serve summer squash or pumpkin, or on a “red night” you would have a tomato-based dinner, or a red pepper stir fry. Letting the kids get involved in meal planning makes dinner time more fun for the whole family. • Remove sodas from the house and replace with flavored seltzer water. • Switch from juice drinks to 100 percent fruit juices. Try fruit/veggie juice blends. • Try making your own trail mix including almonds, dry cereal, pretzel sticks, dried fruits and shredded coconut. Replace regular potato chips with this home-made trail mix for a protein-packed crunchy snack. • Roast vegetables with olive oil and a little salt and pepper in the oven. • Choose lean broiled meats instead of fried. • Use frozen fruit to make homemade smoothies for a vitamin boost. • Choose high-protein Greek-style yogurt vs

regular yogurt – this is great for smoothies too! • Swap out regular peanut butter for the natural peanut butter (all-ground peanuts) version. Cutting out the hydrogenated fat – which is found in regular peanut butter – is good for your heart. • Try whole wheat bread in place of white bread. Look for the kind at the bakery

which contains less preservatives. If you like a nutty flavor, the sprouted grain is for you! Lastly, count your blessings for another year – make it a year to remember! j Aurea Thompson RDN, CSP, LDN Pediatric Nutrition Specialist Wolfson Children’s Hospital

INFANT & TODDLER Some Baby Products Don’t Stand Test of Time

I

f you’re a new parent, it can be confusing to keep up with the latest recommendations about how to give your baby a healthy start. As scientists learn more about the dangers of toxic chemical exposure to babies’ developing bodies and brains, some products haven’t stood the test of time. Here are three of the biggest differences about what parents do now compared to just a generation ago. Choosing organic Parents have been making their own baby food at home for generations, and it’s a great way to know what’s on your baby’s plate. Who doesn’t love some home-mashed sweet potatoes smeared across that cute face? But today we know more about the damaging health effects of pesticide exposure, and how long pesticide residue can linger in the fruits and vegetables we buy. Doctors recommend limiting babies’ pesticide exposure as much as possible due to increased risks of tumors, leukemia and effects on brain development from these chemicals. When you’re making your baby’s first foods, consider organic fruits and vegetables, or those with lower levels of pesticide residues. Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) 2019 ranking of pesticide contamination in produce found that avocados were No. 1 on the Clean Fifteen list of produce least contaminated with pesticide residue. Of all the produce tested, strawberries, spinach and kale top the Dirty Dozen list of fruits and vegetables most likely to be contaminated with pesticide residue. To reduce your baby’s exposure, buy versions of these items produced with organic farming methods. If you’re short of time, don’t forget you have more options than ever for organic premade baby food, both at specialty retailers and major grocery stores. Tossing the baby powder Baby powder is another classic you’d think would be great for, well, babies. But airborne particles can make their way into a baby’s lungs, which is especially concerning since talcum powder can contain unknown amounts of asbestos. Asbestos is a deadly carcinogen,

and inhaling even a tiny amount can cause cancer later in life. Make sure to check EWG’s Skin Deep so you avoid using other products on your baby that could contain talc. There’s another reason to ditch the baby powder: It often contains fragrance, a common cause of skin irritation. Manufacturers are allowed to keep the exact fragrance ingredients under wraps, but they can include chemicals such as phthalates, which have been linked to harmful health effects. Good alternatives: Zinc-based diaper creams create a strong protective barrier, and there are a number of EWG Verified options. You can also find safer alternatives for your baby’s personal care products in EWG’s guide to choosing safer personal care products for kids. Avoiding flame retardants Decades ago, concerns about the fire danger of foam furniture, like sofas and mattresses, led manufacturers to add flame-retardant chemicals to many kids’ products. Today scientists know these toxic chemicals carry their own serious health effects, including cancer and disruption of the endocrine system. Penta-BDE, for years the main flame retardant added to foam products, is now banned, due to reproductive toxicity. But its replacement, triphenyl phosphate, has also been shown to accumulate in the bloodstream and cause reproductive and developmental abnormalities in animals. Considering that the average infant sleeps 12 to 16 hours a day, it’s worth scrutinizing that mattress label. To keep your baby safe, choose a crib mattress made with wool or polylactic acid for flame resistance, rather than chemical flame retardants. You should also make sure to check with the manufacturer on any hand-medowns for flame retardants. Additionally, avoid PVC or vinyl waterproof mattress covers; choose natural cotton with a PUL layer, or polyethylene instead. j EWG.org

Stop Using Inclined Sleepers F ederal safety regulators said new parents should stop using all inclined sleepers — even models that have not been recalled — because of the risk of accidental suffocation.

The warning from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) comes after months of controversy over the popular infant-sleeping devices, which began last April with the recall of millions of Fisher-Price’s Rock 'n Plays because of safety concerns and culminated in the recent release of a study that found the product’s design inherently dangerous. The new warning applies to any sleeping device that allows babies to sleep at an angle greater than 10 degrees. Most inclined sleepers stood at about 30 degrees. In addition to the Rock 'n Play, inclined sleepers made by Kids II and Dorel Juvenile Group also have been recalled in recent months. They were pulled from the market, and the companies are offering consumers some compensation. Both Amazon and eBay have said they plan to stop selling inclined sleepers.

But the new CPSC warning is not a recall. It is the agency’s response to a growing body of research about the safety of inclined sleepers and a surge in the number of deaths associated with the products. The agency said there were fewer than 40 deaths tied to the products in April. Now, that number has shot to 73 infant deaths. The CPSC is also pushing for new federal rules that would essentially outlaw inclined sleepers by limiting the incline to 10 degrees. But the rulemaking process is expected to take at least several months. In the interim, the agency is advising parents to avoid the products. The American Academy of Pediatrics has said for several years that inclined sleepers are unsafe. The group recommends that babies sleep on a flat surface in a crib or bassinet. Prolonged sleep in bouncers or infant car seats is also not recommended. j

SPECIAL NEEDS

Morning Star School Receives Donation for a Brighter Future

A

n unexpected phone call and donation from Jacksonville philanthropist Delores Barr Weaver places Morning Star School, a K-12 special education school for children with learning and intellectual differences, within inches of scoring a major goal. In 2016, the school began a five-year, $1.6 million campaign to expand beyond 8th grade and build a high school. The new building nearly doubles the size of the existing campus, adding two wings with eight classrooms and a state-of-the-art media and learning center. To date, the campaign had raised $1.25 million, but the Media and Learning Center had not yet received a naming donation. “The outpouring of generosity from the Jacksonville philanthropic community has been amazing, but as we approached our fourth campaign year we still needed $350,000 to reach our goal,” said Maria Johnson, director of development for Morning Star. “We used savings and a loan to build our new high school so completing the campaign on time was crucial for future success. To receive a call from The Community Foundation saying Mrs. Weaver wanted to help was thrilling. We were honored and overjoyed.” After touring the school and careful research of the project, Mrs. Weaver, through the Delores Barr Weaver Fund, agreed to help complete the campaign. For $250,000, The Delores Barr Weaver Media and Learning Center will be named in early 2020. “A new Media and Learning Center will open the door to a universe of resources for Morning Star School students,” said Mrs. Weaver. “Their time at Morning Star School will be greatly enhanced by having this gateway to greater knowledge.” Additionally, Mrs. Weaver will also match up to $50,000 in donations to raise the remaining $100,000 needed to complete the campaign. “Morning Star School has demonstrated the need for and the community investment in the Building a Brighter Future capital campaign as it has progressed,” she continued. “By issuing a challenge grant, I hope to inspire others to join me in supporting a successful finish to this worthwhile campaign.”

The school is open to all students in kindergarten through 12th grade who have learning differences, attention deficit disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and intellectual differences. Students from diverse backgrounds come from Duval, Clay, St. Johns, Nassau, and Flagler counties. The mission of the Delores Barr Weaver Media and Learning Center is to nurture collaboration and hands-on learning. Research has demonstrated that students with learning differences learn better when they are fully absorbed in activities and experiences that engage a variety of senses. Because seating will be easily reconfigured for a variety of functions, the space will be used for all aspects of learning and will quickly become a very special gathering space for all students across the curriculum. With state-of-the-art Wi-Fi capabilities, the new space will provide students with the flexibility to use iPads, laptops and smartboards for large group and/or small group instruction. Hands-on activities include STEM projects in science, art and music, as well as group research for literature and social studies. Portable iPads and laptops feature voiceover, assistive touch and guided access to help students learn at their own pace while smartboards combine touch technology with the ability to write and erase over any application. High school students will also use the Media and Learning Center for life-centered education to help support independence through schedules, prompting tasks, paying bills, shopping and social skills. For more information about Morning Star School or to contribute additional funds and receive a matching donation from the Weaver Fund, people can visit the “Building a Brighter Future” capital campaign at Morningstar-jax. org. The Delores Barr Weaver Fund was established at the Community Foundation for Northeast Florida in 2012 to provide grants to nonprofit organizations that do work she has supported over many years and to encourage others to do so as well. Toy Hall of Fame Inducts 3 More

M

atchbox Cars, the coloring book and the collectible card game “Magic: The Gathering” have been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame, recognized for an enduring appeal that keeps them on store shelves today. A panel of experts selected the Class of 2019 from among nominated finalists that also included Care Bears, the Fisher-Price Corn Popper, Jenga, Masters of the Universe, My Little Pony, Nerf Blaster, Risk, the smartphone and the top. The honorees were installed during a ceremony at the hall, located inside The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, N.Y. They will be permanently showcased alongside 68 previous winners that include alphabet blocks, the Big Wheel, G.I. Joe and others recognized for their innovation, longevity and ability to foster creativity or discovery through play. Matchbox Cars follow rival Hot Wheels, Class of 2011, into the hall. Lesney Products debuted Matchbox Cars in England in 1953 and in the United States a year later, where they were selling at a rate of more 100 million a year by 1960, the hall said. When the sporty Hot Wheels entered the market in 1968, Matchbox Cars responded with a "super-fast" line of its own. Both brands are now owned by Mattel. "Matchbox Cars revolutionized the toy car industry after their introduction, and the name Matchbox has become synonymous with miniature cars," Chief Curator Christopher Bensch said. "It's

only fitting that they join the Toy Hall of Fame to sit in the winner's circle alongside Hot Wheels, the other titan of the field." Wizards of the Coast introduced Magic: The Gathering in 1993 and quickly had trouble meeting demand, the hall said. A book series, electronic games and Netflix series have followed. The fantasy game employs chance and skill as players continuously collect new cards and refine their deck and strategies. "The fact that it continues to maintain popularity is a testament to its revolutionary gameplay and constant evolution, making it engaging for beginners and experts alike," curator Shannon Symonds said. The New York printing company McLoughlin Brothers gets credit for producing the first coloring books in the 1880s. In recent years, the activity's appeal has crossed over to adults as a way to reduce stress and boost creativity. Anyone can nominate a toy using an online form, but to make it into the hall, toys must have lasted across generations, be innovative, and foster learning, creativity or discovery through play. The winners are chosen on the advice of historians, educators and others whose lives or careers are focused on learning, creativity and discovery, according to hall officials. j toyhalloffame.org

New Reading Programs at Clay Library R EADsquared is a new Clay County Library software program that promotes year-round reading for all ages through these initiatives: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and iREAD. Program participants can complete activity missions to earn accomplishment badges, and have access to suggested reading lists, book reviews and an events calendar. Register online and create an account to track your reading history. Parents can create an account for themselves, then add accounts for each child. See claycountylibrary.readsquared.com. If you signed up for the summer reading program, your account has already been transferred into the READsquared program for your age group. Reading lists with suggested titles for both new programs are available.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten encourages families to read 1,000 books to their preschooler before they enter school. If you

read one book a night to your child, you will have met the goal in less than three years. Reading daily to young children, starting in infancy, stimulates early brain development and helps build key language, literacy and social skills. See 1000booksbeforekindergarten.org for reading resources and tips.

iREAD encourages reading for pleasure, which has proven health benefits including a reduction in levels of stress and depression, and social benefits like increased empathy and improved relationships with others. “The Mission of iREAD is to help students maintain and improve their reading skills, encourage them to become lifelong readers and library users, and establish reading as a foundation for academic success,” said Jason Black, Assistant Director of Library Support Services. iREAD program participants will have access to several curated book lists to help them get started. All books in these lists are linked to Clay County library catalog. iREAD Kids is for ages 5-12; iREAD Teens is for ages 13-17; and iREAD Adults is for ages 18 and up. Log into your account and track your reading to earn points. Participants will earn a certificate once they have completed the program. j

EDUCATION 6 Ways to Establish a Productive Homework Routine From a Learning Expert

H

omework. Whether you’re a fifth-grader or a freshman in college, the mere thought of homework can be overwhelming. And actually doing homework can be quite difficult. But homework doesn’t have to be something a student dreads. As a former high school English teacher and researcher who specializes in what it takes to make it through college – and a co-author of a forthcoming revised edition of a book about academic success – I’ve studied homework since 2010. Here are six ways I believe homework can be made more manageable and valuable, whether you’re in elementary school, high school or graduate school. 1. Set priorities Establish a list of priorities based on the class syllabus or assignment list. This can be helpful for tackling difficult tasks, creating motivation and activating your sense of control and independence when it comes to learning. The priority list helps maintain goals and gives you

a sense satisfaction to cross things off the list as they are completed. 2. Tackle difficult tasks first Start with your most difficult assignments first in order to make the most of your energy level and to focus at the beginning of a work session. You can attend to the easier or less time-consuming assignments at the end of a work session. 3. Break tasks down to smaller steps You may not know how to start a major task, which could trigger procrastination or feelings of defeat. To guard against this, break major tasks into three or four smaller steps. Within one homework session, you can feel a greater sense of accomplishment by completing each small step toward the larger whole. In some cases, you might be able to spread these tasks over the course of a week. 4. Create evidence of learning You will get more out of the time you spend

reading, reviewing notes or otherwise “studying” if you create something in the process. For example, creating flash cards, a graphic organizer, chart, or notes with bullet confidence over time and helps you realize their potential even when faced with difficulties. A productive homework routine will help you realize that learning is an ongoing journey.

The journey may be difficult but getting organized will make it as stress-free as possible. j Janine L. Nieroda-Madden, assistant professor, College Learning Strategies and Instruction, Syracuse University.

Communication Tips for Parents Be available for your children • Notice times when your kids are most likely to talk — for example, at bedtime, before dinner, in the car — and be available. • Start the conversation; it lets your kids know you care about what's happening in their lives. • Find time each week for a one-on-one activity with each child, and avoid scheduling other activities during that time.

Remember: • Ask your children what they may want or need from you in a conversation, such as advice, simply listening, help in dealing with feelings or help solving a problem. • Kids learn by imitating. Most often, they will follow your lead in how they deal with anger, solve problems and work through difficult feelings. • Talk to your children — don't lecture, criticize, threaten or say hurtful things.

• Learn about your children's interests — for example, favorite music and activities — and show interest in them.

• Kids learn from their own choices. As long as the consequences are not dangerous, don't feel you have to step in.

• Initiate conversations by sharing what you have been thinking about rather than beginning a conversation with a question.

• Realize your children may test you by telling you a small part of what is bothering them. Listen carefully to what they say, encourage them to talk and they may share the rest of the story.

Let your kids know you're listening • When your children are talking about concerns, stop whatever you are doing and Parenting is hard work listen. • Listening and talking is the key to a healthy connection between you and • Express interest in what they are saying your children. Things to Do

PETS

Feeding Your Pet Budgie P

arakeets are small, tropical parrots whose captive diets usually consist of store-bought seed mixes, the occasional millet spray, and not much else. For optimal health and happiness, however, a wide variety of foods should be incorporated into your pet's meal plan. It's a lot of fun to offer your bird a variety of tasty morsels to eat, and in doing so, you will find that they have their own personal taste preferences.

Safety Note: Never offer your budgie a new type of food without first ensuring it is safe for parakeet consumption. If you notice any changes in your parakeet's behavior or appearance after they consume a new type of food, contact your veterinarian. By offering your budgie a variety of healthy treats, you'll learn what they like, what they don't like, and what their favorite foods are. Listed below are a variety of foods that are safe to feed your pet parakeet in addition to store-bought seed mix. 1. Veggies Vegetables can be a very important part of a parakeet's diet. They contain many necessary nutrients that may not be included in a typical store-bought seed mix. Some veggies that are safe to feed to parakeets are: • Lettuce • Broccoli • Carrot (preferably shredded) • Corn • Peas • Spinach • Celery Bite-Size Is Best: Anything you feed to your parakeet should be cut up into small, bite-size pieces. Otherwise, they may have trouble breaking it into consumable portions.

2. Fruits Parakeets love fruits. However, just like in a human's diet, these should be consumed in moderation. Fruits are high in natural sugars that can be detrimental to your parakeet's health when consumed in large quantities. Fruits that are safe for parakeet consumption include: • Apple • Orange • Banana • Pineapple • Grape • Mango • Coconut Keep It Fresh: You should only feed your bird fresh fruits and veggies. Dried or packaged fruits and vegetables may contain added sugars, spices, preservatives, or other ingredients that could be harmful to your feathered friend.

3. Nuts Many parakeets love to eat nuts. They are tasty, protein-rich, and full of nutrients that they may not be getting anywhere else. Here are some nuts that are safe for your budgie to snack on: • Almonds • Pistachios • Peanuts • Walnuts • Pecans A Note about Nuts: Be sure to de-shell and chop or mince any nuts that you wish to feed your parakeet. Most nuts are far too large to be consumed by a parakeet whole, and shells can be difficult and dangerous for them to open themselves. 4. Grains (Occasionally) Healthy, whole-grain breads can be a tasty supplement to your parakeet's diet when offered in moderation. Be sure to choose breads that are free of sugar, preservatives, and other harmful additives. Don't use sweet, heavily-processed breads like Wonder or Franz. Instead, opt for fresh, natural, wholegrain varieties that are free of salt. Breads in Moderation: When compared to the other parakeet-safe treats listed in this article, breads have fewer nutrients and are more filling. Only offer bread to your budgie in small amounts and very occasionally. Bread is a treat and should not be used to replace other components of a parakeet's diet. j pethealthful.com
