Community Profile: Jacksonville Public Library

O

ut of a field of more than 800 libraries in Florida, including public, academic, special and school libraries, the Jacksonville Public Library has been named the 2017 Library of the Year by the Florida Library Association. The award, which recognizes a library that has demonstrated outstanding service to the community it serves, comes on the heels of the American Library Association’s announcement that Director Barbara Gubbin earned the 2017 Ernest A. DiMattia, Jr. Award for Innovation and Service to Community and Profession. Gubbin said the award shows how relevant the library is today in our community. With a focus on priorities for educational success, technology success and economic success, the library’s innovative programs have measurable results and help change lives. She credits the efforts of the entire JPL team for winning the Library of the Year award. “This award is in recognition of our staff and what they do every day to make us a great library.” Gubbin said. “It is recognition of their dedication and talent.” The award recognizes Jacksonville Public Library for many initiatives that impact the community in positive ways, including the Duval County Public School Student Card expansion, Project LEAP (Library Enhanced Access Program), Career Online High School for adult learners, and a new Jax Makerspace for community hands-on creation and collaboration. Through determined library leadership and fierce advocacy efforts, the library gained additional funding to restore hours—and provide more services—to more people throughout the city. With a goal to ensure that all Duval County Public School students have public library cards and direct access to library resources, the library expanded its Student Card initiative for the 2016 – 2017 school year to provide virtual student library cards for nearly 130,000 DCPS students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The expansion resulted out of the library’s successful 2015 pilot program that initially provided virtual library cards to 60,000 DCPS students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Adult learners are given an opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma through the Career Online High School at the library’s Center for Adult Learning. Now in its second year at JPL, COHS boasts

the first graduate in the state; 23 graduates who have earned diplomas and career certifications; and 85 students in progress. Through Project LEAP (Library Enhanced Access Program), a Jax Journey funded anti-crime initiative, the library partnered with community organizations to take early literacy, digital literacy, and adult literacy programs into neighborhoods with the greatest needs. LEAP had more than 6,500 participants in its first year, and the program continues into 2017. With a focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math), the library kicked off a 25,000 square-foot Makerspace where the community can explore, collaborate and create everything from art to robotics. Turn It UP! Thursdays turn up the fun with programs that run the gamut from cooking demonstrations to martial arts classes. The library also offers hundreds of technology classes including 3-D printing, web design, coding and more. Two Comic Cons drew more than 2,400 people, and more than 1,000 young adults attended the library’s Young Adult Job Fair. The library is planning to celebrate the Library of the Year award in the upcoming months. The Florida Library Association is a statewide organization that promotes excellence in Florida libraries by advocating strongly for libraries and providing high quality professional and leadership development for a diverse community of library staff, volunteers, and supporters. The award was open to all libraries in the State of Florida including but not limited to academic, public, special and school libraries. Libraries were evaluated on criteria that included significant expansion or enhancement of a service; demonstration of significant creativity and innovation in programming; and exceptional leadership in implementing programs that can be emulated by other libraries. The mission of the Jacksonville Public Library is to enrich lives, build community and foster success by bringing people, information and ideas together. Last year, more than 3.4 million visits were made to Jacksonville Public Libraries, items were checked out more than 5.7 million times, and over 13,000 programs and services were offered to Duval County residents at the Main Library and 20 branch locations. For more information about the Jacksonville Public Library, call 630-BOOK (2665) or visit the library’s website at www.jaxpubliclibrary.org. j jaxpubliclibrary.org

HEALTH & SAFETY

Make It Quick and Healthy This Summer!

T

rying to stay cool by not heating up the kitchen this summer? I like to keep salads available in my fridge during the summer months for cool lunches and trips to the park. Not all salads are created equal! The key to making salads healthy is to limit the fats – croutons, bacon, mayonnaise and extra cheese add unwanted calories and fat to otherwise healthy ingredients. However, did you know that 1-2 tablespoons of full-fat dressing can actually help us absorb the carotenoids in our salad veggies? Carotenoids are what give vegetables their bright colors, but also act as antioxidants in our bodies. Plus, the oil in the dressing will help your body absorb vitamins A, D, E and K. So go ahead and choose the regular dressing, but limit your portion to 1-2 tablespoons.

• •

Mix your fruits and veggies for a colorful splash! Offering a mixed fruit salad including melons, berries and pineapple is one of the best ways to beat the summer heat - and makes for a healthy dessert. But did you ever think about adding variety to your regular green salad by adding a splash of fruit? Fruits give your salad extra vitamins, fiber and other phytonutrients than regular vegetables alone. Try berries, apples, oranges, pears, grapes, watermelon, nectarines or even pomegranate seeds. If your family likes raisins, try other dried fruits such as dried cherries, apricots or craisens for an extra bit of nutrition. Go Gluten-free!

Try this recipe with diced green and/or red pepper, or add a can of early sweet peas instead of beans. Experiment with the ingredients that your family likes!

If you are looking for a salad that will provide a little more substance than a green salad, and you want an alternative to regular pasta salad, check out what quinoa has to offer. Sometimes referred to as an “ancient grain”, quinoa (say “keen-wah”) is easy to prepare, contains ~5 grams of protein per serving and is a good source of iron, magnesium, vitamin E, potassium and fiber. It takes minutes to prepare and it can be mixed with beans and vegetables for a heartier salad. Check out the recipe below.

• •

2 medium tomatoes, diced 4 green onions, chopped (can use sweet onion as alternative) ¼ cup fresh cilantro Salt and pepper to taste

Directions Bring 3 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan with a tight fitting lid. Add quinoa to boiling water, cover and reduce to simmer. Allow to cook undisturbed for 15 minutes. While quinoa is simmering, mix together vinegar, melted butter, olive oil, and sugar. Add dressing to cooked quinoa and then stir in remainder of ingredients (beans, tomatoes, onions and cilantro).

DON’T FORGET THE AVOCADOS! There has been a lot of excitement over the past few years about avocados and health. Avocados contain heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, vitamin E and fiber, which are all good things to include in your diet. The fat in the avocado acts like the dressing mentioned earlier which helps us absorb fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoids. Try this avocado dressing below for an extra dash of nutrition! Avocado Dressing Courtesy of Dawn Jackson Blatner, RDN Ingredients • 1 avocado • ¾ cup water • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 1 clove garlic • ¼ teaspoon dried dill • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives • Salt and pepper to taste

EASY QUINOA SALAD Ingredients • 1 ½ cups Quinoa • 2 tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar • 2 tablespoons melted butter • 2 tablespoons of olive oil • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1 can garbanzo beans (or black or pink beans)

Directions Blend everything in a blender. Store in a plastic squeeze bottle in the fridge. Experiment with salads this summer! Stay cool and healthy! j Aurea Thompson, MSH, RD, CSP, LD/N Board Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition Wolfson Children’s Hospital

National SAFE Day Can Save Lives

Las Vegas, Nevada.

To the chagrin of her children, Brooklynn’s mom, Darchel, had visited the friend’s home to lay down some rules with the friend’s single father. When Brooklynn was visiting, she told him, there could be no boys. No alcohol. No going out after dark. If she ever got in a car, her seat belt had to be on. “I told him, ‘The girls are teenagers, and we have to work together to get them through being teenagers,’” Darchel remembers. “I was the captain of Brooklynn’s ship, and I was going to get her through the fog.”

B

y observing National SAFE Day (June 4) you may prevent a tragedy from repeating itself.

National SAFE Day was approved by the Registrar at National Day Calendar in 2016 from the lobbying efforts of The Brooklynn Mae Mohler Foundation, a group committed to ending senseless child deaths through education of responsible gun ownership.

An estimated 2 million children in America live in homes where guns are not safely stored or secured. Because of this, children in America are 16 times more at risk of being killed in unintentional shootings than their peers in other high-income countries. On June 4, 2013, 13-year-old Brooklynn Mae Mohler was the victim of a preventable shooting due to an unsecured firearm in a friend’s home in

She and her husband, Jacob, thought their bases were covered. But on the horizon was an issue they didn’t foresee: Firearms. They never thought to address that one. Now, the Mohlers want parents to ask if there are unsecured firearms in the homes where their children play. They want gun owners to pledge that they will safely store and secure firearms. And they want children to vow that they will stay

away from guns. One in three U.S. households has a firearm. Secure storage is vital to the safety of children and is the responsibility of the gun owner. There are many ways to secure a firearm that still allow for fast access, and there is no excuse to place easy access above child safety. Parents, whether gun owners or not, need to take steps to educate children and to ask the question when in homes where their children visit: “Are there any unsecured firearms in the home?” HOW TO OBSERVE S- Secure all firearms in the home A- Ask the question about unsecured firearms in the homes your child visits F- Frequently talk to your children about the dangers of firearms E- Educate and empower others to be SAFE Use #nationalsafeday. #bmmf, #askthequestion, #seaofpink, #safeguns, #justiceforbrooklynn to share on social media. justiceforbrooklynn.com

ADHD: Amazing, Delightful, Happy Dreamer

M

y book Happy Dreamer was originally called “Amazing, Delightful, Happy Dreamer.” And yes, the initials do spell ADHD.

I wrote Happy Dreamer for kids (and grown-up kids) like me. This really is my story -- a peek inside my mind to share how my brain works in its own wild and wonderful way. It wasn’t always easy having a brain like mine. While I was never officially diagnosed with ADHD (the term wasn’t widely used until long after I was in school), I do believe that as a child I experienced many of its symptoms. Growing up, I was dreamer. A day dreamer. A night dreamer. I had a super-charged imagination that kept my brain very, very busy. I had SO many ideas, which was what made me grab a pencil and start to capture these thoughts and images on paper with words and art. Outside of school, it really wasn’t a problem. I grew up in a big family in a busy, noisy house and I loved it that way. I loved all the energy and buzz.

Cheese / www.chuckecheese.com 6065 Youngerman Circle, Jacksonville, FL 32244 10320 Shops Lane 32258, Jacksonville, FL 32258

The first spark of an idea for the book came to me while I was attending a conference on learning differences at Harvard University. Successful CEOs were sharing their challenging learning journeys, and making it clear that their achievements were made because of their brains, and not in spite of them. The panel host pointed out that this group had all described attributes of ADHD in themselves as children. Those attributes sounded very familiar to me. I thought for a moment, “I wish ADHD sounded like something you’d want to have!” I took a pencil and wrote “Amazing... Delightful... Happy... Dreamer.” I went home and wrote a poem by the same name, and that poem became a book.

Things to Do

Recommended for Ages 4 - 8 please, so I did my best to comply and control my buzzy-brain, but it wasn’t always easy. Luckily, every so often, I found a teacher or an activity that tapped into that special brain of mine. When that happened, WHOAH! It was magic. Like when my 7th grade math teacher asked me if I could teach math by using art, story and animation. It was an AMAZING feeling. Happy. Delighted. My dreamer brain was engaged—and I was ME.

With Happy Dreamer, I want to send out a hopeful message to kids who are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. You have a gift, not a label. Your minds are special. You are “delightful dreamers.” Your brains are capable of being flexible, generous, nimble, and inventive. Your kind of thinking is to be understood, nurtured, accommodated and CELEBRATED! I hope this book speaks to you, your family and friends. May it reassure you that good things are ahead for all of us dreamers. In fact, I believe that if we are going to solve some of the planet’s biggest problems—we can’t keep trying the same solutions. We must invite inventive, flexible minds to the table. And world problem solving aside, if this book encourages my readers to simply be happy with themselves, then I’ll sleep — and dream — better at night.

In school, however, it was a different story. I found it a shock to try to stay put in one chair for most of the day. Learning to focus on the lessons was a big challenge for me. I was not encouraged j to capture any of my racing thoughts on paper. I was, in fact, discouraged from doing it. Peter H. Reynolds, Author, Happy Dreamer “All eyes up front.” ….”Mr. Reynolds, do not draw in my class. You can do that after school.” ….”This is math class. Not art class. Put that away.”

INFANT & TODDLER

Breath-Holding Spells

A

bout Breath-Holding Spells

lying down until the spell is over.

Many of us have heard stories about stubborn or willful toddlers who hold their breath until they turn blue in the face. These might sound like amusing “terrible twos” tales, but they’re not funny to the parents of these toddlers. Breath-holding spells can be terrifying for parents because kids often hold their breath until they pass out.

If your child passes out for a brief time, stay calm and: • check your child's mouth for food or any object that could pose a choking hazard once your child regains consciousness • remove all objects or furniture within reach in case your child has a seizure

But these spells aren’t intentional — they’re an involuntary reflex, which means kids have no control over them. Although they’re upsetting to watch, breath-holding spells aren’t harmful and pose no serious health risks. A spell typically lasts less than a minute before a child starts breathing normally again.

Kids with breath-holding spells usually start breathing within a minute.

Breath-holding spells can happen in healthy children between 6 months and 6 years old, but are most common during the second year of life. They can be more common in kids with a family history of them.

If this is your child’s first breath-holding spell, get medical care. Although breath-holding spells aren’t harmful, it’s good to get your child checked out. A doctor can determine whether it was in fact a breath-holding spell or another medical condition that looks like one.

In most cases, breath-holding spells can be predicted and even prevented once triggers are identified. Kids usually outgrow them by age 5 or 6. Types of Breath-Holding Spells Breath-holding spells differ by cause and characteristics: • Cyanotic breath-holding spells happen when a child stops breathing and turns blue in the face. These spells are often triggered by something that upsets the child, like being disciplined. While crying, the child exhales (breathes out) and then doesn’t take another breath in for a while. Parents who have witnessed prior cyanotic spells know exactly when another one is about to happen because their child’s face slowly turns a shade of blue, ranging from light blue to almost purple. • Pallid breath-holding spells are less common and more unpredictable because they happen after a child has gotten a sudden fright or startle (like being surprised from behind). Unlike with cyanotic spells, kids turn very pale, almost white, during the spell. Both types of spells cause kids to stop breathing and sometimes lose consciousness for up to a minute. In the most extreme cases, kids might have seizures. Having a seizure does not cause any long-term harm or put a child at risk of developing a seizure disorder. If a Child Passes Out During a Spell Most of the time, you don’t need to do anything during a breath-holding spell. Your child should stay

Call 911 if your child remains blue or is not breathing for longer than a minute. When to See the Doctor

These spells are an involuntary response to strong emotions (like being angry, scared, or frustrated) and tend to happen in healthy children. Because they’re involuntary (not done on purpose), they’re not a behavioral problem. A doctor can help parents understand what triggers a spell in their child, how to prevent future spells, and how to deal with them if they do happen.

Preventing Future Spells

Your doctor can work with you to help you find coping strategies for you and your child. Try not to give in to tantrums and stubborn behavior — young kids need limits and guidelines to help them stay safe and become well-adjusted emotionally. With experience, courage, and your doctor’s help, you can learn to cope with breath-holding spells while providing a safe and structured environment until your child outgrows them. j

Nature’s Newbies at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens June 26 thru August 1

Sometimes, iron deficiency anemia might cause kids to have breath-holding spells. So a doctor might do a blood test to check for anemia. Treating the anemia may help reduce the number of the spells.

Once kids mature and develop better coping skills, they usually outgrow breath-holding spells. But in the meantime, parents can face a challenge greater than witnessing the spells themselves: finding ways to discipline their child that won’t trigger another spell.

Each Nature’s Newbies class will engage you and your child in free-choice play activities, a story, song, and more. For ages 1 to 3. Programs will also feature a positive and engaging interaction with one of the Zoo’s animal ambassadors to allow for an up-close encounter during each class. Programs are 45-minutes long . Registration for all programs will be processed online. Individual Classes: $8 Members; $11 Non-members / Semester: $32 (Members); $44 (Non-members). Fee covers one child and one adult per class. Military Families Keep United Through Reading

E

ven though he is active duty Navy and is deployed for weeks or months at a time, Rex Bobblett still reads to his four children every night before they go to bed. He might be thousands of miles away, but all that the children need to do is pop in a DVD and there he is, reading their favorite books to each of them in funny voices and asking them questions about the plot and characters. The Bobblett family participates in UNITED THROUGH READING, a national nonprofit program that helps ease the stress of separation for military families by having deployed parents read children’s books aloud via DVD for their kids to watch at home.

during family separations than children in the general population, which can impact their academic achievement. A RAND Corporation study found a strong association between children who have endured separations from a parent due to deployment and lower achievement in reading and math. “United Through Reading makes the distance between service members and their families during deployment seem a little less far while encouraging literacy skills and language development,” said UTR CEO Sally Zoll. Through the program, the service members record themselves reading a book at one of the more than 200 UTR recording sites worldwide, where UTR-trained volunteers guide them in selecting age-appropriate, stimulating books to send home along with a video-recording of them reading the book.

“When he’s deployed, the kids race to the mailbox each day hoping to find a new package with the United Through Reading sticker on it,” says Boblett’s wife Veronica. “Each time a new package arrives we immediately play the DVD and smiles instantly spread across the kids’ faces Parents are encouraged to ask questions and as they see what stories Daddy picked out.” engage the children with funny voices so that the children will play the UTR videos over and over again. Research shows that listening to one book read multiple times and engaging with that book by answering questions positively impacts language development and literacy skills and helps ignite a life-long love of reading.

During deployments, the DVDs became part of the family routine. Each night at bed time, the kids got a Hershey kiss as a goodnight kiss from their father, and then they’d listen to him reading a story while they followed along with their own copy of the book. It not only gave the kids a much-needed connection to their dad, it provided that “extra set of hands” Veronica needed to throw in some laundry or clean up the kitchen.

For the Bobblett family, the UTR recordings keeps the connection between Rex and his kids strong. Over the years, the family tried a lot of different ways to make connections. They used teddy bears with his voice recorded on them, they made “daddy blankets” with his picture on them, and they SKYPE when they can. But by far, says Veronica Bobblet, UTR has been the greatest tool in the family’s deployment toolkit.

“Not only for the kids but for Rex as well because it helps him to feel like he is still a very strong presence in the family by taking part in our everyday routine, and he loves knowing that he is helping me by giving me a break when I need it “It was like he was right there helping me like he by playing those videos,” she says. “We have always does,” she says. always read together as a family from the time they were born so they know it is important to us, One of the most difficult things a child can experi- so seeing that Dad is taking time out of his day to ence is having a parent deployed to a militarized read to them even though he is so far away just zone for an indeterminate period of time. And drives that point home.” j though it’s a routine part of life for military Cindy Long/neatoday.org families, it takes a toll on kids. Research shows that children from active-duty military families experience higher levels of emotional difficulties

SUMMER GUIDE

Pandora – The World of Avatar

A

new land awaits you this summer at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Pandora – The World of Avatar, at 12 acres the largest addition in the history of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, immerses you in a mystical world of massive floating mountains and bioluminescent rainforests where you explore an awesome alien landscape, encounter a larger-than-life Na’vi shaman and soar over Pandora on the back of a fearsome mountain banshee. Based on Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron’s record-breaking box-office hit, “Avatar,” the new land welcomes guests to the lush world of Pandora long after the human conflict with the Na’vi has ended. The dramatic daytime beauty of the land transforms to glow by night when bioluminescent flora and intricate nighttime experiences add a dreamlike quality. The new world is a creative collaboration of Walt Disney Imagineering and Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment. The creative team employed exhaustive research to develop the realistic appearance of Pandora, a fictional exoplanetary moon mined by humans in Cameron’s movie. Set a generation after a great conflict, the Na’vi and humans are at peace, and the land is experiencing a rebirth. Pandora now welcomes Disney guests as eco-tourists. “We are taking our guests on a journey to this world in an experience that’s as realistic and immersive as possible,” says Joe Rohde, Walt Disney Imagineering portfolio creative executive. “In the movie, the world of Pandora is a setting for the action and characters whose story we follow. Here, guests are the primary characters immersed in an extremely vivid, authentic experience.” Guests to Disney’s Animal Kingdom cross the park’s Discovery River into Pandora and continue along a winding rainforest path for their first glimpse of the land’s iconic “floating mountains.” “When guests come across the bridge, they are transferred light-years away, to the Alpha-Centauri solar system and Pandora,” says Jon Landau, Lightstorm Entertainment. “It’s an otherworldly, fully-themed experience.” As guests explore the verdant terrain sprawling beneath mountains that appear to float in the sky, they see waterfalls cascading down the mountainside into meandering streams and pools, and they discover two thrilling new expeditions: Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey. In Avatar Flight of Passage, guests will actually feel the banshee breathe beneath them as they soar

through the forest and past floating mountains. What was a rite of passage for Na’vi in Cameron’s film becomes a multisensory experience for guests seeking the ultimate adventure – an encounter with the most feared predator of Pandora, the Great Leonopteryx. On the family-friendly Na’vi River Journey, guests travel down a sacred river deep into a bioluminescent rainforest. Aboard reed boats, they float past exotic glowing plants and Pandoran creatures into the midst of a musical Na’vi ceremony. The journey culminates in an encounter with the breathtakingly realistic Na’vi Shaman of Songs who is deeply connected with Pandora’s life force and sends positive energy into the forest through her music.

SUMMER CAMP

“This is an attraction that the entire family can enjoy,” Rohde says. “We put you into a magical experience that comes to life through the bioluminescence, the plant and animal activity and the shaman’s music. There’s a wonderful harmony in the entire glowing scene during this lyrical, uplifting journey that builds to a really beautiful crescendo.” In addition to the bioluminescent plants of Pandora, with species names like Spiny Whip, Dapophet and Vein Pod, other wonders of the land include the creatures that guests encounter and, in some cases, interact with. “The landscape will be alive with creatures,” Rohde says. “We’re bringing to life everything from the largest creature you might encounter to the most microscopic. Animals will appear out of the underbrush – big Pandoran animals will appear at the edge of the forest, and you’ll hear the very complicated calls they issue back and forth.” The artful storytelling on Pandora continues as guests stop for sustenance at the land’s Satu’li Canteen (pronounced “Sa-too-lee”), a Quonset-hutstyle building with a spacious dining area that pays tribute to the Na’vi and their culture with special décor. The menu at this fast-casual restaurant is inspired by the healthful bounty of Pandora – wholesome grains, fresh vegetables, and hearty proteins. Guests can also grab a drink at nearby Pongu Pongu, where a friendly expat serves out-of-this-world beverages including a bioluminescent frozen cocktail and indigenous beers. There’s even a sweet snack that guests won’t find elsewhere. Windtraders is a shopper’s delight where guests can choose from Na’vi cultural items, toys, science kits and more. See it in 4DX this Summer

M

ovies are now no longer bound by their visual and aural limits. 4DX is the next step in the movie-going evolution taking audiences on a journey into the full feature film. Orlando is one of only four cities in the United States to have the 4DX technology that gives moviegoers a 4D experience including effects such as motion, vibration, mist, smoke, blowing air and rain. Inside every dedicated 4DX auditorium, motion chairs and environmental effects such as wind, bubbles, and scent work in perfect synchronicity with the action on screen. 4DX motion chairs are equipped with three base movements of heave (move up and down), roll (move left and right) and pitch (tilt backward and forward) which can create an endless expanse of possible combinations to mimic such actions as flying and driving. “Beauty and the Beast”, “Kong: Skull Island”, “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword”, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “War for the Planet of the Apes.” are all films that have or will soon be released in 4DX. If you plan a trip to Orlando this summer and want to experience this fully immersive theater experience, visit The Regal Pointe Orlando 20 & IMAX online www. regmovies.com for 4DX show times and to purchase tickets. The theater is located at 9101 International Drive, Orlando, FL. Tickets for 4DX at Regal Pointe currently range from $17.77 for children to $21.18 for adults with additional discounts for students, military, and seniors. Besides the Orlando theater, New York City and Los Angeles have two 4DXs each and Chicago has one. If your travels take you abroad, there are 4DX theaters in 45 countries! j

In a performance of Gems, Doug weaves together many art forms to create the fabric of the stories. Masks, puppets, mime, drama, comedy, music, and storytelling are integral elements that help the audience to experience these treasures of wisdom. The performance includes the following stories two of Aesop’s “The Lion and the Mouse” and “The Blind man and the Lame Man”, and the Native American tale “The Drip Nose Boy”. The characters of the play are unaware they are being watched by the audience. This is not the case in Doug Berky’s, “NO SHOW”. The premise of “NO SHOW” is that a performance has been scheduled. The stage is set. The audience is seated and waiting, but the actors are a “no show.” A “member” of the audience begins to search for the cast. When they cannot be found he discovers the set and all the props waiting to be used. Theatrical masks, juggling equipment, and a tutu are just a few of the items discovered. “NO SHOW” is a structured improvisation with audience interaction. It weaves together elements of mime, circus, masks and silent movie schtick. It is designed as a family show and is appropriate for all ages. Free admission. Two shows, one at 11am and one at 1pm. Dinosaurs In Motion At MOSH

Dinosaurs in Motion is a new, interactive and engaging STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) exhibition that is truly for visitors of all ages that engages and educates the visitor by using 14 magnificent, fully interactive, recycled life-size metal dinosaur sculptures inspired by actual fossils. The exhibit is open through September 10th and is proudly sponsored by Jax4Kids. Dinosaurs in Motion is an amazing blend of science, art and innovation. The life-sized metal sculptures captivate visitors while their exposed mechanics illustrate science and technology principles in a fun and engaging way. The exhibition weaves the science, art and innovation themes throughout and touches on each of these educational topics at each sculpture. The art portions highlight sketching, drawing, and sculpting; the science segments explore kinetics, biomechanics, and robotics; and the innovation areas encourage observing and experimenting. The visitor is taken on a highly interactive apprentice’s path that follows the story of the master artist, John Payne. The exhibition’s narrative is reinforced with experiential learning, as every dinosaur is available for visitors to touch and move. Visitors will have the unique ability to manipulate dinosaurs via lever and pulley systems, as well as with remote controls, offering large-scale dinosaur interaction unprecedented in a museum setting. Additionally, visitors will be able to test out their own artistic creativity and newfound technological inspiration with hands-on activities at the Innovation Stations, where they can create a variety of art and science projects of their own!

counterpart for accurate skeleton recreations. The hammered sheet metal and welded components show imperfections and artistry marks, adding to the beauty of the artwork and further illustrating the artistic process. “I don’t try to hide the hammer marks or the cutting marks or the welding marks,” Payne said. “They’re like the energy of the person who’s building it. It’s not a machine that’s building these, it’s a human being pounding with a hammer.” “Dinosaurs in Motion is the most unique dinosaur exhibition touring right now. No other exhibition using the dinosaur brand offers this level of interactivity in the areas of STEAM,” said Tom Zaller, CEO and President of Imagine Exhibitions. “We are excited to present these incredible works of art in a tactile way that really speaks to the most important educational topics in our culture.” About Imagine Exhibitions Imagine Exhibitions, Inc. is the global resource for all aspects of exhibitions and attractions. From design to creation, placement to presentation, marketing and operations, Imagine has the experience and inspiration to bring the best possible experience to any venue. Imagine is currently producing and touring more than 30 exhibitions in museums, science centers, zoos, aquariums, resort properties and non-traditional venues throughout the world. For more information, visit www.imagineexhibitions.com or visit its Facebook page.

The moving, human element to the exhibition lies in the story of the artist, John Payne, who truly is the heart of Dinosaurs in Motion. Through video and interactive components, visitors will walk away with Payne’s inspiring message: “If you can dream it, you can do it.” The exhibition is one that inspires guests to learn, discover and create! The dinosaurs, created from recycled metals and junkyard parts, were each born as a sketch. Payne carefully modeled each bone and joint after its real-life

Things to Do Teens

TEENS

Summer Job? Job 101 is the Way to Go!

S

ummer for teens isn’t just about going to beach or hanging out with friends or going on vacation. All these things often require one thing – money! During this time of year, most high school students are ecstatic about being out of school. FREEDOM! 10 weeks of it, to be exact. Most students find jobs for various reasons, like saving up to buy a new car, saving for college, to gain responsibility or to work doing something they are passionate about. There are a million reasons to get a job. Students, do you have what it takes to get one? The journey to getting a job has several important steps.. Let me tell you how you can impress a hiring manager. You’ll need the 4 Ps – Preparation, Practice, Presentation and Passion. Preparation – First, you’ll need to figure out what you want to do. It takes research. Applying to several places and just getting a job for the sake of getting a job is short term. Once you have that job, your employer will expect you to follow through with your commitment. So, do what you like to do. The best way to find out what a job is like is by talking with current employees. They are the organization’s best advocates. Find out as much as possible. Look at the company website or Facebook page. Then, start putting together a resume if you haven’t done so already. A resume is an official way of presenting yourself on paper before an interview. And filling out an application correctly will show that you can write down information. Practice – Once you know where you’d like to work, it’s time to practice before the interview. I was once told it’s best to practice in front of a mirror. A mirror? Yes, it’s pretty revealing to see yourself ask a question and then hear and see how you answer back. It may feel a little weird at first, but you’ll see how you look when you answer a question. If looking at yourself is uncomfortable, then simply have a parent or friend ask you questions. The more practice you have answering interview questions, the more confidence you’ll bring to an interview. Practice makes progress.

reach your hand out….give a firm handshake. Remember that you are in control as much as the hiring manager. Once you are seated, assume a posture of sitting up straight (no slouching!) while staying as relaxed as possible. Face the hiring manager. If you brought any materials with you, have them on your lap. Think of it as a conversation. The manager is trying to get to know you. When I was a manager doing interviews, if I saw that the candidate could show up on time, tell me about him/herself, answer questions well, ask me questions, and lastly, SMILE…..then I considered the person a great candidate. And yes, smiling is important. It tells the manager that you are friendly and approachable. Confidence is key! Passion – I saved the best for last. Passion is crucial. But, you think, this is a summer job, not a career! Really? Yes. I was 19 years old when a friend introduced me to lifeguarding. Now I own my own safety company. You never know what you might become passionate about. If you’re not yet sure what you’re passionate about put passion into your job. Show the hiring manager why you want the job. I will hire a passionate, hard working person before I hire a person who just wants a job. As a hiring manager, I had to know that I was hiring someone dependable, reliable, self-sufficient, trustworthy, and personable and who had manners. Can you do these things that I mentioned above? Congrats! You’re on your way to getting that job! j Bio Tukz Taaca is the co-owner of Safety First CPR & Safety Training. He’s had 30 years in the workforce. As a former hiring manager for a local company in Jacksonville, he’s seen the lack of preparation teens often bring to the interview room.
