Safe Kids Day is June 9th!

T

he focus is on fun, games and prevention Saturday, June 9 at Safe Kids Day 2018 in Jacksonville! This year’s annual celebration of kids, preventing injuries, and saving lives will be held at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens “Play Park” surrounding the Splash Ground water park and at Trout River Plaza. Free with admission to the zoo, the event will run from 9:30 am until 1pm. The theme of this fun family event is “Let’s Play” and many opportunities to do just that will be featured when sixteen community experts come together at one occasion to provide interactive games for the kids, as well as education for families about how to keep children of all ages safe from injuries that are far too common in our precious little ones.

Preventable injuries can happen at home, at play, while vacationing or on the go, and claim over 8,000 young lives in the U.S. each year. Another almost 8 million children must go to the emergency room for treatment from injuries that can be avoided. Safe Kids believes this is a problem that can be fixed with awareness, education, and by providing the proper tools to parents and caregivers. Since Safe Kids Worldwide was established in 1983, the rate of fatal childhood injuries has decreased by 61% in our country, but we’re not stopping our efforts until every child has the opportunity to grow up safely and to realize their potential! Safe Kids Day is an annual event sponsored this year by Johnson & Johnson, Nationwide, Fed Ex, and Tide. Over 200 local coalitions across the nation are joining in on the fun that also benefits Safe Kids Worldwide and the local coalitions hosting the event. Safe Kids Northeast Florida, led by THE PLAYERS Center for Child Health at Wolfson Children’s Hospital are grateful to this year’s local sponsors Florida Swimming Pool

Association Northeast Florida; Orange Park Memorial Hospital; Farah and Farah; American Heart Association; Turner Pest Control; and School of Swimming, Inc.; and of course Jax4Kids.com! Each of our local sponsor’s contributions will support Safe Kids Northeast Florida’s on-going commitment to injury prevention programming in our community! Sponsors will also host a tent and activity, lending their special expertise to provide education about safety around water, medicine, laundry pods, safety while walking, biking, playing outside, and much more! Adding to the festivities and fun will be familyfriendly music from DJ Jim West; costumed water safety characters Sammy the Starfish, Gilbert Guppy, Timmy Tadpole, and Bongo the Lifeguard from the Safer 3; Crunchy and Munchy characters from Turner Pest Control; many great giveaways including free bike helmets; and a fantastic prize drawing at 12:30 for participating families. With summer approaching, Safe Kids Day is also an opportunity for parents to learn where to sign their kids up for swimming lessons! Other participants from Safe Kids Northeast Florida include Swimming Safari Swim School; Aqua Jax Swim School; Florida/USVI Poison Information Center; U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary; Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department; Splash Jax Swim School; Children’s Home Society; and Safe Kids Northeast Florida led by THE PLAYERS Center for Child Health. We hope you will bring the whole family out to the zoo to enjoy all the fun of Safe Kids Day at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens! HEALTH & SAFETY

Keep Food Safe this Summer

S

ummer is here. Dreams of pool parties, beach outings and weekends out with friends begins. Keeping food safe will make sure that the day fosters good memories and not ones of food poisoning. Foodborne diseases are a major cause of illness and death in the United States. It is estimated that 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths are a result from foodborne illness annually. The ones who can suffer the most from foodborne illness include the elderly, the sick and the very young. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that each year roughly 1 in 6 Americans (roughly 48 million people) get sick from foodborne illness. Some of the most common culprits? Salmonella, Staph aureus and Listeria bacteria. Food may be handled many times between the farm where it was raised and your home. Reducing foodborne illnesses is one of the objectives of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and food safety is one of the guidelines in the 2015-2020 Dietary Guide-

lines for Americans. Ensuring that food is safe to eat is a critical part of healthy eating. The four basic food safety principles that work together to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses are Clean, Separate, Cook and Chill. Let’s look at each one individually. CLEAN HANDS, FOOD CONTACT SURFACES, AND VEGETABLES AND FRUITS. Always wash your hands before and after handling food, especially raw meats. Cutting boards that come in contact with raw meat should not be then used to cut fruits and vegetables because of cross-contamination of bacteria from the meat to the produce. And it’s a good idea to wash your meat-cutting boards thoroughly with hot, soapy water or clean them with a bleach-alternative home-made cleanser of lemon juice and baking soda, then rinse with hot water. SEPARATE RAW, COOKED AND READY-TO-EAT FOODS WHILE SHIPPING, STORING AND PREPARING FOODS.

Never store raw meat on the top shelf of your refrigerator – it may drip juices containing harmful bacteria onto other foods. Always keep raw meats on the bottom shelf until they are ready to be taken out for cooking. If you have meat that is frozen, never thaw the meat on your countertop overnight. During those long hours, the meat can reach room temperature and be in the danger zone for bacterial growth. Instead, plan ahead and thaw frozen meats in the fridge overnight. They will still be cool, but not frozen, when you are ready to use them (and safe!).

temperature, they are in the danger zone – meaning that harmful bacteria can grow on them and then cause illness later for you and your family. If perishable foods have been out for 4 or more hours at room temperature, throw them out. It is important to keep hot foods hot (and out of the danger zone) as well. CHILL (REFRIGERATE) PERISHABLE FOODS PROMPTLY.

Put left-overs in the refrigerator as soon as possible. You can always get them out later when people are hungry again. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines also caution that some foods pose a COOK FOODS TO A SAFE TEMPERATURE. risk of foodborne illness which include raw (unpasteurized) milk, cheese and juices; raw or Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Stick by undercooked animal foods (seafood, meat, that rule, and you will help eliminate many sources of food-borne illness. The Civics teacher hid his face behind the huge check presented to him as his students cheered him on via remote video. “Seeing these students come in one way and have them leave another way is just tremendous,” Chrispin told show host Ellen DeGeneres. “Having the opportunity to change and shape these young people is what’s amazing to me.”

Through these programs, Chrispin says he hopes that his students are inspired to build their own bridges of success both in and out of the classroom. As a first-year educator, Chrispin has already had an opportunity to change and shape his students. He is an active mentor at the Bridge to Success Academy. In addition to teaching civics, law studies, and performing arts, Chrispin has also created the “Boys to Gents” program, which helps his students afford to go to prom by providing them with formal attire such as dress jacket, pants, ties and cuff links. The educator is also organizing the school’s first-ever Young Men’s Symposium, which will be held on Wednesday, May 16 and connect students

St. Johns Virtual School is an online school of choice offered by the school district for grades k-12. Both part time and full time enrollment are offered. The SJVS full-time program is a program of choice meaning that students must apply and meet very high standards for acceptance. The vision of SJVS is to be leaders in innovative teaching through online and blended learning programs that use best practices to promote academic excellence in a student-centered environment while serving the District of St. Johns County. The mission is to ensure all students are provided with an academically rich and rigorous education through online learning opportunities that meet the needs of today’s diverse learners. A full-time virtual student is expected to complete a minimum of six courses per semester. Online students must be self-disciplined, selfmotivated, responsible, and challenged by rigor. Parents and guardians must play an active role in monitoring their child’s progress and make sure their child maintains a regimented schedule. Part Time students are able to take SJVS courses during the school day in a lab at their school

of attendance or after school as an additional course. For full time, the virtual school is a district school of choice meaning students must apply and be accepted. Acceptance is based on prior student grades, test scores, and student attendance. The rationale for our selective process is based on the premise that if a student is not successful in the full time program or chooses to withdraw, he/she can severely disrupt their graduation timeline. A second enrollment window, for second semester, will open in late November/early December. SJVS is a franchise of Florida Virtual School. They use their curriculum, but instruction is provided by St. Johns County teachers. Students can participate in sports and other activities with permission of the school. The enrollment window for the St. Johns Virtual School (SJVS) full-time program closes July 10. To learn more about virtual options and apply to the program, see http://www-sjvs.stjohns.k12. fl.us/

Easy Ways to Relieve Your Dog’s Boredom

I

s your dog bored? Check out this list of easy ways to keep your dog busy and relieve dog boredom: PLAY SOME NOSE GAMES Hiding treats around the house or playing a game of hide and seek with your dog is a fun way for them to get some extra mental stimulation. It’s one of the most versatile games you can teach your dog. Start off with a simple game of ‘guess which hand’ to get them started. PLAY SOME TUG OF WAR Tug is a great way to mentally & physically challenge your dog. Short games of tug work wonders for tiring out our canine friends. Minute for minute a nice game of tug is one of the most physically & mentally challenging games you can play. CHANGE UP YOUR WALKING ROUTINE Daily walks can get a little mundane if you’re going the same route every day. Switch it up by exploring new neighborhoods and changing your pace. Allowing your dog to smell their surroundings adds mental stimulation. USE INTERACTIVE DOG TOYS Using food dispensing toys, such as the Kong Wobbler and Bob-A-Lot Treat Dispenser, are an easy way to give your dog some more mental stimulation. There’s also a lot of great toys you can make from items around your house. WORK ON SOME SIMPLE OBEDIENCE TRAINING Training your dog any new command gives their brain a workout. A few 10 minute sessions a day working with your dog on new tricks or commands burns a lot of mental energy. GIVE YOUR DOG A JOB Find jobs that fulfill their breed tendencies. Retrievers tend to love fetching and Border Collies usually excel in agility. Find out what your dog absolutely loves doing and make it into a job for them

GET YOUR DOG A JOLLY BALL Any big ball toy can be a lot of fun, and jolly balls just tend to be more durable than a soccer ball (if your dog is a tough chewer make sure you get one without a handle). Some dogs love playing with these all by themselves, but of course you can always make it more interesting by playing with them. PRACTICE SOME FREE SHAPING GAMES Shaping is building a particular behavior by using a series of small steps to achieve it. Letting your dog make their own choices burns an amazing amount of mental energy and helps your dog develop learning behaviors. USE A STUFFED KONG TO KEEP YOUR DOG BUSY When you leave your dog at home give him a stuffed Kong or another tough interactive toy to keep his mind occupied. One favorite is a frozen peanut butter filled Kong. Your dog won’t even look up when you leave. USE A KIDDIE POOL OR TAKE A TRIP TO THE LAKE A lot of dogs naturally love water; on a summer day these dogs will love just splashing around and wading in a shallow pool. If you live by a dog friendly beach or lake even better. Many dogs love a good swim – not just Labs. It’s an amazing exercise for dogs with arthritis since it’s low impact. GIVE YOUR DOG A NICE VIEW Dogs like to know what’s happening outside so give them a chance to scope out the yard. A lot of dogs love napping in the warm sunlight in front of windows. Of course if you have cats they might have to compete for the nice sun spot.

MAKE YOUR DOG WORK FOR HIS FOOD When it’s time for his meals you can use a treat dispensing toy or simply make him do a few tricks to work for it. If you feed kibble you can also try hiding pieces around the house. Studies have found that dogs prefer earning treats to ARRANGE A PLAY DATE simply being given extras. It goes back to the Give your dog some meaningful interaction by fact that dogs have been bred to work alongside having a dog play date with your friends or family. us; working is not only something to keep the If there’s some friendly dogs in your neighboroccupied – it gives them a purpose. hood even better – no need to make any special arrangements. MAKE A FLIRT POLE FOR ENERGETIC & HIGH DRIVE DOGS BUILD A DIGGING BOX It’s a rod with a lure on the end and many dogs If your dog loves digging build them their own love chasing after them. You can make your own personal digging box in your yard. Bury toys in it with PVC pipe, bungee cord, and a toy for the and let them find it; some dogs love digging so lure. j much this can keep them entertained for hours. puppyleaks.com

And for the Cat Lovers… A new children’s book, “I’d Like a Cat Like That,” recently published by local residents, artist Linda Bigbee and writer John Allen, gives us a whimsical and delightfully charming look at man’s other best friend. “A cat that reads and likes to sing. A cat that that laughs at most anything. I’d like a cat like that.” Mr. Allen’s rhymes and Ms. Bigbee’s drawings play off one another perfectly in this sweet and entertaining look at some very cool cats.
