Mark your calendars for October 14 and order your solar eclipse glasses now because a rare occurrence will happen on that date. It’s called an Annular Solar Eclipse. Where we live, as the moon passes the sun, it will be eclipsed about 60%. The maximum eclipse is projected to be at 1:22 p.m.. The next of these rare total eclipses will take place on April 8 of next year if you want to see a total eclipse, make travel arrangements now for one of the major U.S. cities inside the path of the total eclipse - San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse. Your next opportunity to see a total eclipse after that will be in the year 2044! Turn to page 6 and read more about this month’s eclipse.

A movement began at the Gatwick Airport in England in 2016 to make the world a better place for the 1 in 6 people globally living with a hidden disability. The Sunflower was chosen as it suggests happiness, positivity, strength as well as growth and confidence and is universally known. Those with a hidden disability simply wear a lanyard with sunflowers to alert others that they may need extra help, understanding and patience. Business across the world have joined the Sunflower Network. It’s a lovely idea that encourages inclusivity, acceptance and understanding. Community Profile: Library Foundation of Jacksonville

What makes a library great?

Without question, it is the support the library receives from private citizens who understand and value the essential role a library plays in the life of the community.

Andrew Carnegie knew that. His $50,000 contribution helped build a library in Jacksonville in 1905. In 1986, The Foundation of Jacksonville, Inc. (d/b/a Library Foundation of Jacksonville) was formed as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation to carry forward Carnegie’s legacy that great libraries don’t just happen – they must be nurtured.

The mission of the Library Foundation of Jacksonville is to inspire, advocate and grow philanthropic support for the Jacksonville Public Library in service to lifelong learners throughout our diverse community.

The Foundation provides the community members, corporations, and other stakeholders with opportunities to invest in the success of the Library. With private financial support, the Foundation expects to support cand enhance the Library’s current funding system, not to replace the tax base and public community dollars so essential to the core of the Library mission. Supermarket released eight newly-authored and illustrated JaxKids Book Club books. The books will be distributed to nearly 8,000 children in VPKs throughout Duval County this fall.

Since its inception in 2004, the JaxKids Book Club has provided 1,100,000 free books to more than 130,000 four and five-year-olds throughout the city. As a national model, 19 states and 40 municipalities have consulted with Jacksonville officials to create similar programs that promote early literacy.

The Club provides access to books to promote early literacy and a love of reading for all children throughout Duval County. JaxKids Book Club has everything kids and their families need to make learning and reading fun. Each year, the Club distributes free backpacks filled with books to all Duval County VPK students (public and private). Children of VPK age who don't receive a backpack through VPK may get a backpack at any Jacksonville Public Library location (while supplies last).

The Winn-Dixie Gives and Harveys Gives Foundations provided the Library Foundation of Jacksonville with a generous grant of $50,000 to refresh the JaxKids Book Club collection and commission new books from diverse authors and illustrators with a focus on reflecting the diverse Jacksonville community.

Rare Annular Solar Eclipse on October 14

The first of two great American solar eclipses will take place on October 14th with the second being April 8, 2024. Total solar eclipses are a rare phenomenon. After 2024’s eclipse, the next total solar eclipse visible to North America will be in 2044.

The Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, annular solar eclipse will cross North, Central, and South America. It will be visible in parts of the United States, Mexico, and many countries in South and Central America. In the U.S., the annular solar eclipse begins in Eugene, Oregon at 9:16 a.m. PDT and ends in San Antonio, Texas at 11:56 a.m. CDT.

Jacksonville is not within the path of totality, so we will only see a partial solar eclipse. The maximum obscuration of the sun as it passes over our area will be 60%. For Jacksonville, the partial eclipse begins at 11:50 a.m and the maximum eclipse we will see will be at 1:22 p.m. The partial eclipse will end at 2:57 p.m.. Note: You will need a specialty pair of eclipse glasses to keep your eyes safe. These are available from multiple sources online.

An annular eclipse is a phenomenon that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth while it is at its farthest point from Earth. Because the Moon is farther away from Earth, it appears smaller than the Sun and does not completely cover the star. This creates a “ring of fire” effect in the sky. The Moon covers the Sun’s center, leaving the Sun’s visible outer edges to form a “ring of fire” or annuls around the moon.

People located in the center of the moon’s shadow when it hits Earth will experience a total eclipse. The sky will darken, as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people in the path of a total solar eclipse can see the sun’s corona, the outer atmosphere, which is otherwise usually obscured by the bright face of the sun. A total solar eclipse is the only type of solar eclipse where viewers can momentarily remove their eclipse glasses (which are not the same as regular sunglasses). j

Budding Gardeners: Going Batty

Bats are such an impressive and important part of the ecosystem. Learn all about them, try a bat snack, and take home your own flying bat. Master Gardener Volunteer Cyndy Reynolds, president of the Ortega Forest Garden Circle, will share fascinating details about bats as pollinators and show a real bat house. Fall Migration Field Trip

This park is a must for any birder during any season; it has 1.5 miles of coastal beaches where participants can do a sea watch and look for shore birds. Pumpkin Spice Everything!

I feel like we live in a divided country. No I’m not talking politics here! Every year when fall comes around, we magically see the store shelves fill with everything pumpkin spice. Even restaurants and fast food establishments advertise pumpkin specialities of their own. And the biggest debate of them all - you either love it or you don’t.

What is pumpkin spice anyways? Is pumpkin really that good for you?

Let’s delve a little more into the pumpkin craze!

The good news is that pumpkin is actually very nutritous. It is a vegetable that provides a variety of vitamins, minerals, fiber and other beneficial compounds.

Here is a breakdown of the nutritional content of one cup of cooked pumpkin:

• Calories: 49 calories

• Carbohydrates: 12 grams (similar to the carbohydrate in 8 ounces of cow’s milk)

• Dietary Fiber: Approximately 3 grams

• Sugars: Approximately 3 grams

• Protein: 2 grams

• Fat: less than 1 gram

• Vitamins:

à Vitamin A: A rich source of beta-carotene, which can be converted into vitamin A in the body, providing about 170% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA).

à Vitamin C: Approximately 9% of the RDA

So what exactly is Pumpkin Spice?

"Pumpkin spice" refers to a blend of spices and flavors commonly associated with the taste of pumpkin pie. This blend of spices is used to add a warm, sweet, and aromatic flavor to various foods and beverages. The most common spices found in pumpkin spice mix include:

• Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a key component of pumpkin spice and contributes a warm, sweet, and slightly spicy flavor.

• Nutmeg: Nutmeg adds a nutty, slightly sweet, and aromatic quality to the mix. It's typically used sparingly because it has a potent flavor.

• Ginger: Ground ginger adds a spicy and slightly pungent note to the mix, complementing the sweetness of the other spices.

• Cloves: Cloves provide a strong, sweet, and slightly bitter flavor. They are often used in small quantities due to their intense taste.

• Allspice: Allspice is called so because it has a flavor reminiscent of several different spices, including cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. It rounds out the pumpkin spice blend.

These spices are combined in varying ratios to create the familiar pumpkin spice flavor profile. Pumpkin spice has become synonymous with the flavors of fall and is often associated with holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. It's widely available in stores as a pre-made spice mix, but you can also make your own pumpkin spice blend by mixing the individual spices in the following proportions:

• 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon ground ginger

• 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

• 1 teaspoon ground allspice or cloves

Try making your own Pumpkin Spice Smoothie at home!

Gather your ingredients:

• Pumpkin - ½ cup 100% canned pumpkin puree

• Banana - one preferably frozen

• Apple - one medium cut into chunks, skinned

• Greek yogurt - can use plain or vanilla, ½ cup

• Almond, soy or any other dairy alternative milk, or cow’s milk, ¹/³ cup

• Maple syrup or honey, 1 tablespoon

• Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon

• Spices - ½ teaspoon of Pumpkin Pie Spice (or homemade blend) plus ¼ teaspoon of Cinnamon

• ½ cup of ice cubes

Blend all ingredients until smooth! Enjoy your own pumpkin spice treat! j

October is the start of crisp fall air, pumpkin patches, Halloween, trick-ortreating, hayrides, and costumes. It is also the start of Pedestrian Safety Month and International Walk and Bike to School Day, both of which focus on teaching children safe pedestrian behavior throughout the year. There are so many fun family memories to be made during the month of October, as well as a ton of safety tips to utilize all month long to ensure you are staying safe while having fun!

Halloween:

Halloween night is perfect for a fright, but not when it comes to pedestrian injury. Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than any other day of the year. Teens see the highest rates of pedestrian injuries in October, November, and January, while younger children see higher rates during the summer months. Teens are more likely to exhibit riskier behavior when it comes to crossing at non-intersection locations and walking or biking during dusk, dawn, or nighttime. For Halloween night, there are some simple safety tips to implement to ensure your night is full of fun, and to reduce your risk of a pedestrian injury. When it comes trick-or-treating at night, children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. If your children are mature enough to partake in the night’s festivities without adult supervision, encourage them to go with a group they trust, and stick to well-lit areas that they are comfortable walking. Encourage children to bring glow-sticks or carry reflective pails to increase their chance of being seen by unsuspecting drivers. The brighter the costume- the better!

Pedestrian Tips:

On average, children under ten years old are unable to judge the speed and distance of oncoming traffic, so they should always be crossing the street with an adult. Teach children to only cross at street corners and

crosswalks after looking left, right, then left again. While crossing the street, you should always be on the lookout for any oncoming cars as they may not always see you. Making eye contact is a great way to ensure the driver sees you, so ensure that all devices are put away and headphones are taken out prior to crossing. In parking lots, teach children top stick with an adult as people may be backing out or pulling into spots quickly. Sidewalks are the safest place to walk for pedestrians! If there are no sidewalks, walk on the side of the road that is facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Finally, children typically model their parents’ behavior! Ensure that you or any older children in the family are setting a good example by exhibiting safe pedestrian behaviors!

Visibility:

The data trends show that children under twelve are more at risk of a fatal pedestrian injury during after school hours between 3 and 6pm, while teens were more at risk during nighttime hours between 9pm and midnight and the early morning hours before dawn. When walking or biking, children need to make sure they’re being seen by drivers. Encourage teens to deck out their backpack, shoes, jacket, or any other items they use every day with reflective strips so that vehicle headlights will reflect off them to increase visibility. Bright colors increase the chances of a driver seeing you and the available reaction time they have to stop, versus darker colors where drivers may only have less than a few seconds to react and slow down a vehicle that is thousands of pounds.

Treating and Preventing Head Lice

Head lice affect millions of children every year. “Although head lice are a yearround problem, the number of cases usually peaks during back-to-school time in the fall and again in January,” says Patricia Brown, M.D., a dermatologist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

No matter how good your personal hygiene or how well you clean your home, you can get head lice.

The most common way to get head lice is direct contact with someone who has head lice. Children who spend a lot of time together in close quarters, such as playing or during sports activities, are at risk. Because children play so closely together and often in large groups, lice can easily travel from child to child, especially when they touch heads while playing or talking.

The CDC estimates that 6 million to 12 million cases of head lice occur each year in the U.S. in children ages 3 to 11. Head lice cases are most common among children attending childcare or school, and the household members of children with head lice.

Head lice do not live on animals, and you cannot get head lice from your pets. Head lice feed only on human blood.

Head lice are blood-sucking insects about the size of a sesame seed and are tan to grayish-white in color. They attach themselves to the skin of the head (scalp) and lay eggs (nits) in the hair. Although uncommon, head lice can be spread by sharing clothing or belongings.

You can check for head lice or nits by parting the hair in several spots. Use a magnifying glass and a bright light to help spot them. Lice don’t fly or jump; they move by crawling. Because head lice can move fast, it may be easier to spot the nits. Nits can look like dandruff. You can identify them by picking up a strand of hair close to the scalp and pulling your fingernail across the area where you suspect a nit. Dandruff will come off easily, but nits will stay firmly attached to the hair.

FDA-approved treatments for head lice include nonprescription and prescription drugs in shampoo, conditioner, and lotion formulations. Some of these drugs are available in kits that

include a small, fine-tooth comb. Separately packaged lice removal combs or comb-like devices are also available and used to remove and/or kill lice and nits.

“Many head lice products are not for use in children younger than 2. So read the label carefully before using a product to make sure it is safe to use on your child,” Brown says.

Talk with your child’s doctor or your pharmacist about the recommended treatments based on your child’s age and weight. Treatments should be used on children only under the direct supervision of an adult.

Help Your Family Prevent Head Lice

• Teach children to avoid head-to-head contact during play and other activities at home, school, and elsewhere (for example sports, playgrounds, slumber parties, and camps).

• Teach children not to share clothing and supplies, such as hats, scarves, helmets, sports uniforms, towels, combs, brushes, bandanas, hair ties, and headphones.

• Disinfect combs and brushes used by a person with head lice by soaking them in hot water (at least 130°F) for 5 to 10 minutes.

• Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with a person with head lice.

• Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the person with lice sat or laid. Head lice survive less than one or two days if they fall off the scalp and cannot feed.

• Clean items that have been in contact with the head of a person with lice in the 48 hours before treatment. Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items using hot water (130°F) and a high heat drying cycle. Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry-cleaned or sealed in a plastic bag and stored for two weeks.

• Do not use insecticide sprays or fogs. They are not necessary to control head lice and can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.

• After finishing treatment with lice medication, check everyone in your family for lice after several weeks. If you find live lice, contact your health care professional. j

University of Florida researchers petitioned the FDA to remove most phenylephrine products based on recent studies showing they failed to outperform placebo pills in patients with cold and allergy congestion. The same researchers also challenged the drug’s effectiveness in 2007, but the FDA allowed the products to remain on the market pending additional research.

The FDA assembled its outside advisers to take another look at phenylephrine, which became the main drug in over-the-counter decongestants when medicines with an older ingredient — pseudoephedrine — were moved behind pharmacy counters. A 2006 law had forced the move because pseudoephedrine can be illegally processed into methamphetamine.

Advisers to the Food and Drug Administration voted unanimously on September 12th against the effectiveness of the key drug found in popular versions of Sudafed, Dayquil and other medications stocked on store shelves.

If the FDA follows through on the panel’s recommendations, Johnson & Johnson, Bayer and other drugmakers could be required to pull their oral medications containing phenylephrine from store shelves. That would likely force consumers to switch to the behind-the-counter pseudoephedrine products or to phenylephrine-based nasal sprays and drops.

The group also told the FDA that studying phenylephrine at higher doses was not an option because it can push blood pressure to potentially dangerous levels.

“I feel this drug in this oral dose should have been removed from the market a long time ago,” said Jennifer Schwartzott, the patient representative on the panel. “Patients require and deserve medications that treat their symptoms safely and effectively and I don’t believe that this medication does that.”

The advisers essentially backed the conclusions of an FDA scientific review published ahead of this week’s meeting, which found numerous flaws in the 1960s and 1970s studies that supported phenylephrine’s original approval. The studies were “extremely small” and used statistical and research techniques no longer accepted by the agency, regulators said.

“The bottom line is that none of the original studies stand up to modern standards of study

design or conduct,” said Dr. Peter Starke, the agency’s lead medical reviewer.

Additionally, three larger, rigorously conducted studies published since 2016 showed no difference between phenylephrine medications and placebos for relieving congestion. Those studies were conducted by Merck and Johnson & Johnson and enrolled hundreds of patients.

A trade group representing nonprescription drugmakers, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, argued that the new studies had limitations and that consumers should continue to have “easy access” to phenylephrine.

Like many other over-the-counter ingredients, phenylephrine was essentially grandfathered into approval during a sweeping FDA review begun in 1972. It has been sold in various forms for more than 75 years, predating the agency’s own regulations on drug effectiveness.

“Any time a product has been on the market that long, it’s human nature to make assumptions about what we think we know about the product,” said Dr. Theresa Michele, who leads the FDA’s office of nonprescription drugs.

But FDA reviewers said their latest assessment reflects new testing insights into how quickly phenylephrine is metabolized when taken by mouth, leaving only trace levels that reach nasal passages to relieve congestion. The drug appears more effective when applied directly to the nose, in sprays or drops, and those products are not under review.

The group’s negative opinion opens the door for the FDA to pull phenylephrine from a federal list of decongestants deemed effective for over-the-counter pills and liquids. The FDA said removing the products would eliminate “unnecessary costs and delay in care of taking a drug that has no benefit.”

The FDA’s nasal decongestants drug list, or monograph, has not been updated since 1995. The process for changing a monograph has traditionally taken years or decades, requiring multiple rounds of review and public comment. But a 2020 law passed by Congress streamlines the process, which should allow the FDA to accelerate the publication of new standards for nonprescription ingredients. j

Baby Bottle Safety

New parents understandably want to shield their babies from potentially harmful chemicals. After all, a baby’s tiny body is particularly vulnerable to risk from chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA), lead, and phthalates. That’s why Consumer Reports recently tested nine popular baby bottles for those compounds.

The bottles tested, in alphabetical order were: Boon Nursh Silicone Baby Bottle, Comotomo Natural Feel, Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow Anti-Colic Options+, Green Sprouts Silicone & Sprout Ware Baby Pocket, Lansinoh Baby Bottle, MAM Anti-Colic Baby Bottle, NUK Smooth Flow Baby Bottle, Philips Avent Natural Baby Bottle, and Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Baby Bottle

The good news: They didn’t detect any of those chemicals in any of the bottles they tested.

Still, some precautions are warranted, says Ashita Kapoor, associate director of product safety at CR, who led the baby bottle tests. Each test involved scraping or cutting a small amount of material from the bottle and analyzing it to look for markers that would indicate any one of these concerning substances:

BPA

This chemical is used to harden plastics. It’s also used in resins that line some metal food cans, as well as in many other products, including receipt paper. Exposure to BPA has been linked to metabolic disorders, obesity, certain cancers, fertility problems, low birth weight in babies, disrupted immune function, and other health issues, says Devon Payne-Sturges, DrPH, an associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Public Health in College Park.

Growing concerns about BPA prompted manufacturers to phase it out of use in baby bottles. Once that was complete, the Food and Drug Administration officially declared in 2012 that BPA couldn’t be used in baby bottles.

Lead

This is a toxic heavy metal, and no level of exposure is considered safe, especially for young children. Exposure to lead has been linked to a number of health issues in young kids, including lower IQs, behavioral problems, ADHD, autism, and other issues.

Phthalates

This is a class of chemicals used to make plastic more flexible. They are frequently found in products like plastic tubing or children’s toys. Like BPA, phthalates have been linked to a number of health issues, according to Payne-Sturges, including “a negative impact on male reproductive tract development.” Our

tests looked for the eight phthalates currently regulated by the federal government for use in children’s consumer products, including baby bottles.

There are things you can do to reduce the risk of your baby being exposed to BPA or other chemicals from their bottles, including using bottles made from glass or silicone. Glass and silicone bottles are less likely to contain potentially harmful chemicals than those made from plastic.

Plastic Baby Bottles Could Contain Other Bisphenols or Phthalates

While they didn’t find BPA in any of the bottles they tested, and that chemical is no longer supposed to be used in any baby bottle, some manufacturers now use related chemicals— such as bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF)—as replacements. Research confirms that these substitution chemicals are common. As blood levels of BPA in people across the U.S. have fallen, levels of those alternatives have risen, Payne-Sturges says. And because these chemicals are structurally similar to BPA, they’re likely to cause similar health effects, Zoeller says.

Similarly, while CR didn’t detect any of the eight phthalates they tested for—all of which have federal regulations limiting their use—there are many other related compounds out there, Payne-Sturges says. And researchers think that health problems could be caused by exposure to cumulative levels of many different types of phthalates, not just a few.

Safety Tips:

• Consider glass or silicone baby bottles. Glass bottles in particular are much less likely to contain any kind of bisphenol or phthalate, Kapoor says, but just be careful not to break them. Silicone, especially food-grade silicone, is also less likely to contain those chemicals.

• Choose one of the bottles CR tested, or buy baby bottles from reputable retailers in the U.S. Be wary of third-party sellers.

• High heat could release BPA. Try not to expose plastic baby bottles to high temperatures, such as in a microwave or even in a dishwasher. Instead, it’s generally best to clean plastic baby bottles by hand, using a bottle brush, and letting them air-dry. And don’t overheat milk or formula that you put into plastic bottles.

St. Augustine Sailing is making its sailing excursions accessible for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). They recently earned the Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation from The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). By obtaining certification, St Augustine Sailing demonstrates its commitment to understanding and accommodating the needs of individuals with ASD.

“This certification program is aligned with our core values,” says Rose Ann Points, owner, captain, and broker at St. Augustine Sailing. “We believe in the transformative power of sailing and believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy and sense of accomplishment that comes from being on the water. St. Augustine Sailing has already implemented many techniques for creating a safe and predictable space for those with ASD. The

yachts carry fidget toys and sensory tools like headphones that can help reduce anxiety and aid in relaxation. There are designated low-sensory areas available on-shore before and after the sail where guests can relax in a calm space. St. Augustine Sailing even offers quiet hours sails, to avoid crowds and excessive noise. And for those who have dietary issues, there are many substitutions and alternative items available. Guests are encouraged to share any sensitivities they may have so that staff can make the appropriate accommodations.

Be Empowered to Set Driving Rules! They’re Designed to Save Your Teen’s Life

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for teens (15-18 years old) in the United States. As a parent or guardian, your first priority is to protect your teen. You can be the biggest influence on your teen’s choices when they are behind the wheel. National Teen Driver Safety Week is October 15-21. Take this time to have a conversation about the biggest driving risks for teens and be empowered to set driving rules!

• Remind your teen that driving is a privilege, not a right. As the parent, you’re in control. In the state of Florida, the parent or guardian who signs the Parental Consent Form can rescind responsibility for the minor’s driving privilege and cancel their license. If your teen is following the rules of the road, the privilege to drive is there. If they aren’t following the rules of the road, they shouldn’t be freely given the keys to the car. Remember, their inexperience puts themselves and others at risk.

• Have a conversation with your teen driver about driving laws and safe driving habits. Your desire to keep them safe never gets old, so make sure the lines of communication are always open. Believe it or not, your teen is listening, and they depend on you to guide them and be there for them.

• Become familiar with your state’s nighttime driving restrictions, passenger restrictions, and graduated driver licensing (GDL) restrictions. Surveys show that teens with parents or guardians who set and enforce firm rules for driving typically report engaging in fewer risky driving behaviors and being involved in fewer crashes.

• The responsibility for safe road behavior is shared: Be a good role model for your teen driver by demonstrating your own safe driving habits.

• Talk to your teen about cell phone use while in the car. Encourage them to put away their phones while driving, designate a texter or navigator, or pull over before answering phone calls, texting, or engaging with any social media apps. Remind your teen that it’s not acceptable to record themselves or post on social media while driving.

Talk with your teen about the Rules of the Road

1. Don’t Drive Impaired.

Remind your teen that drinking before the age of 21 is illegal, and alcohol and/or marijuana and driving never mix, no matter your age. Also, remind them that driving under the influence of any impairing substance — including illicit, prescription, or over-the-counter drugs — could have deadly consequences.

2. Buckle Up — Every Trip. Every Time. Lead by example. If you wear your seat belt every time you’re in the car, your teen is more likely to do the same. Remind your teen that it’s important to buckle up on every trip, every time, no matter what (both in the front and back seats), even while in taxis or ride-sharing services.

3. Keep Your Eyes on the Road, Hands on the Wheel, and Mind on the Driving Task. Remind your teen about the dangers of texting, dialing, or using mobile apps while driving. Require your young driver to put their phones away and to turn on the “Do Not Disturb” or similar phone features when on the road. Distracted driving isn’t limited to phone use; other passengers, vehicle audio and climate controls, and eating or drinking while driving are all sources of dangerous distractions when full time and attention should be given to driving. Know your state’s law regarding mobile phone and texting while driving restrictions.

4. Obey All Posted Speed Limits. Speeding is a critical issue for all drivers, especially for teens who lack the experience to react to changing circumstances around their cars. Obey the speed limit and require your teen to do the same.

5. Limit Passengers. With each passenger in the vehicle, your teen’s risk of a fatal crash increases. Review your state’s GDL law before your teen takes to the road — your state may restrict the number of passengers in the vehicle during the first months of driving on a provisional license. GDL laws may further dictate who can ride in a car being driven by a teen after the permit period has ended.

Pine Forest School of the Arts teacher Laura Hammock was awarded the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville Art Educator of the year.

The nominee for the Art Educator award demonstrates dedication to enriching their students with a passion for the arts; an understanding of the value of the arts, and a desire to participate within the arts and culture community; use of the arts as a vehicle to educate; incorporates the arts into their teaching methods; and thinks creatively how to use the arts to develop other skills within their students.

the Pine Forest Dance Ensemble, an after school dance group partnered with The Florida Ballet. She has written, choreographed, and produced arts integrated shows for her first and second graders. These shows are infused with arts, science, history, art history and dance history. While studying Black History, students learned about James Weldon Johnson and performed “Lift Evr’y Voice and Sing”. They learned about Alvin Ailey and reproduced “Revelations”. The ensemble uses songs for math, kinesthetic activities for all subjects, readers theatre, and visual arts for poetry. Ms. Hammock has presented at conferences and written art integrated lessons for teachers and published those lessons in an online course. She is her students’ biggest fan, and loves to show her support by attending their performances. She is currently working on a script about one of her students who started dancing at Pine Forest and is now a professional dancer and choreographer. This show will hopefully lead to future students being inspired.

Jean Ribault High School Becomes the FIRST Taxpayer-Funded High School Project

The future of education in Jacksonville is taking shape!

Introducing the new Jean Ribault High School - the FIRST high school project under the taxpayer-funded master facility plan and the initial new high school since 2010 in our city.

With a sprawling 234,400 square foot space, it will have the capacity to nurture around 1,600 Trojans. Plus, the legacy of Jean Ribault will be retained, with some buildings like the Field House, Auditorium, and more staying intact.

This modern hub of learning is not just about regular classrooms. From music and art rooms to six specialized Career and Technical Education (CTE) spaces - including unique programs like rooftop urban agricultural gardening and digital audio production.

Mark your calendars, Trojans! August 2025 is when we unveil this architectural marvel designed by SchenkelShultz Architecture and built by the Gilbane Building Company and Bhide & Hall teams.

With extensive input from the community, the Duval County School Board has adopted the qualities desired in the next superintendent. More than 3,600 participants submitted input through a survey. In addition, community members participated in six facilitated focus group sessions to provide input to the school board.

The board adopted the following statement of qualities at their September 19 meeting. After the process of interviewing finalists is complete, a special Board meeting will take place on November 21st to select the next Superintendent. The new Superintendent’s projected start date is January 1, 2024.

2. A student may only formally participate in one project for entry, either solo or as a team.

3. One thousand dollars will be awarded to one student or team with a winning entry. All team members should be listed on the entry form. If a team is selected, the $1000 will be divided evenly among the team members. Two winning entries will be selected.

4. Create an original project that demonstrates kindness, compassion, and / or inclusion. Be creative. Submissions may include a written paper, video, song, service project, etc.

5. Video submissions must not exceed four (4) minutes in length, written papers must be ten (10) pages or less. All service or art related projects must be submitted with pictures or video and a detailed description.

6. Each student project will be judged on the quality of the presentation, its overall impact on others, and the ease of understanding or interpretation.

7. The project must not contain anything inappropriate, indecent, obscene, hateful, defamatory, or harmful against any individual, group, or religion.

8. The project cannot be anything unlawful.

9. The project contest starts September 12th and ends November 8th, 2023, at 5:00 pm.

Obesity Among Cats Now an Epidemic PETS

Obesity among U.S. cats has reached epidemic proportions. Many degenerative diseases can be avoided with appropriate weight management. The following are five of my top recommendations for slimming down a too-heavy cat.

#1 — Feed Fresh

Cats need a diet high in animal protein and moisture, with low to no grain or starch content. A nutritionally complete, meat-based fresh food diet is the best choice for pets who need to lose weight. It's important to adequately nourish your cat's body as weight loss occurs, making sure his requirements for key amino acids, essential fatty acids and other nutrients are met.

The key is to meet your kitty's nutritional requirements through a balanced diet but feed less food. The first step is to transition him to a diet free of potatoes, corn, rice, soy and tapioca to get the carb content down to a biologically correct value of no more than 20% with a goal of less than 10% for healthy cats.

Calculate the carbs in your kitty's diet by adding up the moisture, fat, protein and ash (estimate 6% if you don't see this value listed) on the pet food label and subtract this value from 100: this is the amount of carbs in your cat's diet.

#2 — Calculate Calories

Most people who feed commercially available pet food tend to follow the suggested feeding guidelines printed on the package, Instead, decide (with the help of your veterinarian, if necessary) what his ideal weight should be. Then use the following formula to calculate the precise number of calories to feed daily to get him down to his ideal weight and maintain it.

Let's say your cat's ideal weight is a slender 12 pounds rather than her current weight of 16 pounds:

Daily calories (feline) = Body Weight (kg) x 30 + 70 x 0.8

Her ideal weight of 12 pounds divided by 2.2 converts to 5.5 kilograms; now the formula looks like this:

Daily calories = 5.5 (kg) x 30 + 70 x 0.8 And finally, it looks like this:

Daily calories = 188

Now you'll have to find out how many calories are in the food you're feeding (found on the package and website) and finally, calculate the

daily portion your cat needs.

#3 — Encourage Hunting Behaviors at Mealtime

Free feeding is the perfect way to create an overweight or obese cat. In addition, a constantly available food source turns your carnivorous hunter into a grazer, which goes against her feline nature and induces metabolic stress.

Wild cats are always on the move in search of their next meal. Many domesticated cats, on the other hand, are free fed. The more you feed, the less interested your kitty is in "hunting" — which is good exercise — around the house.

Separate her daily food allotment into several small portions and place them in different locations around the house for her to find. Make use of indoor hunting feeders (they work great with freeze dried food), which encourage natural feline behaviors and provide mental stimulation as well.

#4 — Less is More When It Comes to Treats

Treats should make up less than 10% of your cat's daily food intake. Limit treats to training and behavior rewards only, offer a very small amount and subtract treat calories from the food calorie equation above.

Cats are obligate carnivores so look for single ingredient all-meat treats, such as freezedried chicken hearts and scallops (loaded with taurine!) or dehydrated meats.

#5 — Inspire the Natural Athlete in Your Cat

You'll never see a fat cat in the wild because they follow their natural instincts, which include the drive to be physically active and chase prey.

Twenty minutes of aerobic activity daily will help your kitty burn fat and increase muscle tone. Engaging in play is also a great way to distract cats from "crying in the kitchen," the yowling that sometimes occurs when they realize they're eating fewer calories.
