Typography Hiromura Design Office Lettering and Design Takenobu Igarashi makes purely sculptural forms of the theme of individual letters. The sculpture on the right serves as a street address at the office of Nike; the number ‘180’ has acquired a power and solidity that inspires feeling of awe. The forms have been built up with layers of brushed steel plates, perfectly engineered and bolted together. The sculpture bears a striking similarity to the inside of a bank vault.
The studio has developed letterforms in three-dimensions for virtual environments. The letters represented here were produced with architectural rendering software. Above, a bulbous, pronged letter “f” as seen from an oblique angle; at the top, a classical letter “A” rendered as a series of planes in space. These letters, and others, are published in a monograph called Dimensional Typography.
The sculpture on the bottom right takes form of a stack of thick metal plates of various shapes. The three-dimensional form resembles the letter ‘A’ but Igarashi is playing here on the relationship between the two dimensional world of letter forms and the three-dimensional world of sculpture; it is in the step pattern formed by the ascending plates that the intended letter ‘F’ is revealed.
A dot theme is repeated throughout the signage for this junior high school. Room numbers are created using holes cut into sliding doors. When closed, the room still interconnects with the space outside and is not completely closed of. When the doors are slid back, the holes are still highly visible.

Zim & Zou are tow French artists, based in Nancy. They focus on installations using hand crafted objects made out of tangible materials such as paper, wood, thread, as opposed to the computer software made designs. Their work is very impressive to say the least from ‘Atlantis’ to ‘The Answer Issue’.

The design on the right was created using graphic pen prints which were formed either by placing Tria pens, nib down, onto paper or vice versa and letting them bleed. I love the simplistic formula used to create the outcome.
On the right are images from an animation of his called ‘X’. The use of geometrical shapes to create a sci-fi feel which is fascinating.

Idea No.1 A typographic City
This idea came to me when through my primary research related to typography. Imagine a world that is literally a world of words and alphabets. How do I perform this task? I can use my images from my primary research and alphabetise them.

Idea No.2 Comparing Cities
Whilst on my quest to explore the wonders of cities I came to the realisation that both cities that I had taken into account for my research were being done so with a fresh eye. That is so because I had never been to Leeds before this and I had never focused my attention on Huddersfield either. What if I use those first impressions to take my development further. My initial thought it to use animation to convey my feelings towards the two contrasting environments.

Idea No.3
Create a Physical City The concept is inspired by Zim & Zou and Alexandra Bruel who rely on physicality to create their products. I adore their style of work so I would like to use it to create my own sort of city.

Development The Dissection
I believe the best way to find solutions is to get to the roots and dissect the material to understand it’s raw form. It is only after that understanding can we find solutions and ideas. I implemented the same philosophy of mine here by taking out the prominent images and taking out their shapes and form.

Enough experimenting, it’s time to create a satisfactory story board. For this reason I used my impression of Huddersfield and Leeds. Huddersfield, being this quiet, safe, small town and Leeds being the busy, thriving, big city.

Development Typographic Approach
Coming back to my first idea related to typography I experimented using the animation clips to make the word, although frankly I am not impressed as it looks quite horrid. The idea does not seem to have much legs to it as I had thought it would. 39

Development Tune
I have the animation but what about the music? What if you are musically handicapped? Have no fear for Fruity Loops Studio is here. This software is a life saver that helped a not so musically gifted person like myself create music using systematic approach. Having a piano roll where you make the beats and a separate pattern tab where you can piece the music together and to top it of letting you hear the music as you make adjustments to it in one go makes it really efficient and simpler to create.

Development Physical Experimentation
These two are what I consider as failures as they do look appealing, however, appeal alone does not help in a successful project.
I created a prototype to see whether I could create motion in animation using physical objects. This prototype is quite similar to a flip book, however, it has a pull tab attached to it.
Never limit yourself, that is my motto, hence, thinking from diverting from digital world I experimented with hand made materials as well. As much as I failed in this experiment I also found a promising specimen. 43

Development The Trademark
A title is like the identity of the product, an animation title is like a logo to a company so it should have a trademark to it. To keep that trademark I used the Leeds building to create the typeface.

Development The Book Making
Printing Hazards
The pull tab flip book seemed incomplete, so I made it into a book version where it resides within the book.
I learned that printing is an art on it’s own when it took me three tries to successfully print the cover page. Life lessons, scale your images properly before sending them off too print.
