Memo from mike

JAYE December 2008

‘tis the season

W beauty is her name Top Right: The many faces of cover beauty Sonia Fashola. Below: Check out “What to Pack for Your Holiday Getaway” on p. 100 penned by Fashion News Director Chandler Stephens for major insight on what to pack for the winter vacation you’ve been anticipating.

hen you’re different, it’s inevitable that you’re going to encounter naysayers and name-callers; however, it’s not what’s you’re called, it’s what you answer to. Sonia Fashola, this month’s stunning cover girl, has endured all types of ridicule in her quest to succeed as a fashion model. Fashola was her harshest critic until she realized her uniqueness was what made her special. She focused her attention on reaching her dreams — instead of making excuses as to why she couldn’t. Read her wonderful profile on p. 92. As we round out the year, let’s head into a new one leaving all the self-doubt behind. Embrace what makes you different and inspire those around you to do the same — it’ll be the best gift you can give this holiday season. But if that’s not enough, check out our five-page supplement at the back of the issue with gifts from A-Z to help you pick out the best presents for your loved ones. And since Christmas break is here, holiday party invites all flowing in. In our “Frock and Roll” fashion story on p. 124, we hope to quell your “nothing to wear” anxiety by presenting 50 must-have dresses. December 1 also marks the 10th anniversary of World Aids Day, and to increase awareness of this silent killer (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, today, women account for more than one quarter of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses and HIV/ AIDS is the 6th leading cause of death among all women aged 25–34 years), our monthly feature “Health Headliners” on p. 139 has facts and figures on HIV, and because we think knowledge on all STDs are important, check out “Everything You Need to Know About STDs” on p. 97 — and if you’re sexually active, be sure to get regularly tested. E-mail me at jayemagmike@gmail.com and tell me how you’re going to spend your holiday vacation. In the meantime, have a ball reading the issue!

STAR

Although she has been in front of the camera since she was in diapers, Hayden Panettiere is still a breath of fresh air. She is not quite twenty, but this young superstar-in-training gives young actresses a run for their money — and she seems to have strayed from reckless behavior that some of the actors before her participated in. Wellknown for her role as a feisty tot in Remember the Titans and a current leading role in the hit television series, Heroes, Hayden proves she is here to stay with more than just her acting skill— her style is age appropriate and classicly chic!

“I’m a normal person. Just because I’m in the spotlight doesn’t mean I’m God’s gift to the world. I’m learning and making mistakes just like every other 17-year-old girl out there.”

STYLE in a SNAP >> Stimulate your style with these smart finds

By Christina Payne

Military jackets are a staple for fall. All shades of blue, including navy, are huge this season!

This sophisticated cocktail ring brings even the most casual looks together. Invest in a few this season!

The Fall ’08 runways were filled with slouchy pieces and sleek designs. The pleated trouser gives a relaxed yet tailored look for your wardrobe in a neutral color.

A denim pencil skirt is just what you need for the cooler days or for a casual day out.

Pair feminine pieces with these edgy ankle boots (with or without tights) to give this otherwise simple look a touch of toughness.

The chain link watch is the new fall staple — don’t leave the house without one!

A brown leather bracelet instantly updates your look and lends a dose of individuality to your personal style. Add warm, complimentary colors to your look with a brown tote in an exotic skin.

Invest in quality knits, to give for warmth and comfort.

Suede pumps like these are perfect for day (think jeans and a snug cardigan) and night (paired with your LBD and pearls). PENCIL SKIRT, $84, James Jean, queenbeegirls.com. Lust, Love, Lose Your go-to guide for the trends you gotta get, need to keep and should to stow away

trench coat, $160, Topshop, topshop.com

Bill Blass Fall 2008

LUST: belted trench coat

LOVE: slouchy trousers

LOSE: white bottoms

■ Because the trench coat an inherently tailored and puttogether piece, pair it with other classic basics to maintain it's authoratative shape. ■ Wear the trench open with a pencil skirt and blouse combo or belted with wide-leg trousers and an satchel in a neutral tone. ■ Pointy-toe pumps are just what the doctor ordered. Here's where you can take some chances and step outside the box. Pumps in exotic skins and rich fall colors work well with belted trenches.

■ Billowy trousers work well on almost all body types! ■ To keep the silhouette streamlined and classic, stick to form-fitting tops that provide a coveted hourglass shape. ■ Ruffles are a huge trend. Take a cue from Bill Blass (above) and invest in a eye-catching ruffled blouse in a neutral tone. ■ A trendy boyfriend blazer is an ideal companion with the masculine trousers. Be sure to polish the look with feminine accessories and make-up.

■ Drew Barrymore rocks the white pants look to perfection, but this crisp, casual look should be reserved for the spring and summer months. ■ If you can't resist wearing your ivory investments, make them fall-appropriate by pairing them with browns, beiges and other neutral colors. ■ Colored jeans are much more on-trend and modern, so if traditional blue jean denim is stale, search for colored denim instead of white bottoms.

JAYE FASHION BUZZ

In the know

Your fix for fashion news & views THE ECONOMY NO MORE SHOPPING SPREES? When facing such a crisis as a fall in the economy, it’s hard to imagine fashion becoming oblivious in our eyes. Needless to say, the fashion industry is experiencing major dips in sales because of its dependency on credit, which has been hard to come by this fall. According to the Associated Press, after the value of its stock shares fell more than 10 percent in early September, Saks President Ron Frasch said, “its all a big guessing game now.” In the near future, we might begin to see the fashion industry become increasingly more stagnant. But this industry isn’t one to sit still and designers are fighting to find more ways to adapt. No one knows for sure whether this will lead to lower quality standards, fewer choices for consumers or bankruptcy, but either way, the outlook could be very grim.

Celebs like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian may have dollars to spend, but for college students across the country, times are hard.

Banana Republic celebrates their 30th birthday this year. BR GONE BANANAS! Banana Republic, the chain of clothing stores owned by Gap Inc., chose to celebrate 30 years in the industry through a new fall advertising campaign that captures and maintains the brands history of delivering the best in style. This new campaign is set to focus on the signature Banana Republic wardrobe elements, such as the crisp white and classic chino pants. To step up the advertising, they also incorporated new brand extentions including fragrance, eyewear, and accessories. The main element highlighted in this new campaign was ‘Monogram’, a limited addition collection that reflects the most extensive expression of the brand. “For over 30 years, Banana Republic has delivered affordable luxury to shoppers, giving each person a chance to discover and create his/her own city style,” said Peter DeLuca, Chief Marketing Officer for Banana Republic. “This campaign pays homage to the classic, yet fashionable pieces that are part of the brand’s heritage as well as customer favorites.” The reinvention of classic is what makes Banana Republic the true elevation of style.

FASHION & CHARITY Macy’s (right) showed their philanthropic prowess by holding a fund-raiser for HIV/ AIDS research. The event raised over $1 million.

At this point, Fields has collaborations with Payless, Marks and Spencer, and HSN under her belt. Her new line is strategically named “Destination Style New York.” The 50-piece collection of sportswear, denim, dresses, and accessories is sure to turn any heads this Fall. Followers of Field will be pleased to see a variation of the white flower dress that Sara Jessica Parker wore in the opening scene of Sex and the City: The Movie for sale. NBC has decided to file a lawsuit against the creator of Project Runway, Harvey Weinstein, claiming that Bravo wasn’t given a fair chance in keeping the show. The New York Times says, “The suit asserts that Harvey Weinstein, the chief executive of the Weinstein Company, promised NBC that it would have an opportunity to match any offer to the rights of Project Runway and that instead, Mr. Weinstein concluded a deal with Lifetime on Feb. 7, even though he continued to negotiate with NBC Universal for two more months.”

MARVELOUS MACY’S On September 30, Macy’s Passport raised $1.45 million for HIV/AIDS research at the 26th annual fund-raiser held in Los Angeles, California. Many big names, which included Tommy Hilfiger and Ed Hardy’s Christian Audigier, were amongst the crowd during the events. WWDLifestyle reports, “Auction emcee Sharon Stone said, ‘I do understand that we are facing the biggest economic crisis since the Depression. I know that to be here tonight, for all of you, is a sacrifice and a gift. I will ask you to open your hearts and your wallets.” Many were severely concerned that the economic problems would make fund-raising much harder, yet after 26 years Macy’s has raised nearly $30 million for HIV/ AIDS, and they show no record of slowing or stopping.

A pencil skirt and blazer in wool or tweed are amiable alternates. Slouchy trousers are a staple for the season — pair them with a longsleeved ruffled blouse to add some feminine flair to this menswear inspired piece. Don’t be afraid to spice up your outfit with a statement necklace and some stilettos. A Christmas party is the perfect occasion to show of your hot new buys (if you shopped beforehand) and showcase

What I love about the holiday season In this month’s installment, Creative Director Christina Payne considers all that’s great about the holidays

50  JAYE | DECEMBER 2008

And what screams convenience more than online shopping? Outlets! They are the perfect onestop shop for name brands for less, and you will be more likely to find pieces for the upcoming season to stow away for a few months. You can find outrageous sales from the likes of BCBG, Betsey Johnson, Coach, Bebe — even Aldo. Discounts as high as 75 percent are tacked on to fabulous

Of course, giving love and gifts is what the holiday is all about, but what’s wrong with a little TLC for Y-O-U? pieces, marked down from three digits to more than reasonable two-digit prices. But, you have to be patient! You won’t be the only one who is in on the secret of outlet shopping, so be prepared to do some searching through countless racks—it will be worth the time and effort, though. Shopping isn’t the only event that gets my holiday juices flowing. Christmas parties are next on the list. After I line up a couple of soirèes for the weekend

your style, even in the coolest days of the winter season. So, let’s review: remember, online shopping will save you tons of time and the major headache, especially if you plan ahead to shop for your loved ones. Grab your girlfriends and head to the outlets for the day-after-Christmas sales, and get a head start on the next season — you will be ready for the spring in no time! Head to a Christmas party in honor of this special holiday — keep your friends and family close, but your credit card closer! And of course, shop wisely! ■

■ ‘Tis the season for giving: snow is falling, Christmas streets are for sale, but the season for giving — and a little receiving — is here. And what’s better than seeing all of your family members for the first time since last year’s holiday season? Shopping! Of course, giving love and gifts is what the holiday is all about, but what’s wrong with a little TLC for Y-O-U? Next to visiting loved ones and exchanging gifts, I am most excited about all of the sales and hustle and bustle of shopping ‘til I drop! Obviously, the mall is the hot spot for shoppers both before and the very next day after Christmas, but there have been alternate go-tos for your shopping woes. Online shopping has reached number-one for consumers’ preference, specifically for the holiday season. From the Gap to Linens-n-Things, now more than ever is the time to visit your favorite retailers’ Web sites to shop from the comfort of your home — you can even send your gift purchase to your intended gift receiver’s doorstep.

JAYE STYLE Rachel Roy standing outside of a movie screening in a design of her own

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT Rachel Roy Understated sexy, uptown cool and downplayed glamour are trademarks of this fresh-on-the-scene fashion designer, wife (to hip-hop mogul!), mother of two — and favorite of celebrities across the globe Left: Designs from Roy’s fall 2008 collection. According to her Web site, Roy is “widely perceived as one of the most refined women in fashion today and her collection embodies this allure which has earned the respect and esteemed recognition of the global fashion community.” And, we couldn’t agree more! 52  JAYE | DECEMBER 2008

Only three years into the world of fashion design, and Rachel Roy has quickly escaped her superstar hip-hop businessman husband, Damon Dash’s shadow. The recent birth of her second child has not had any effects on her creative skill--in fact, her Fall ’08 Ready-to-Wear collection offered a little less than safe, yet elegantly sophisticated approach to a fashion-forward winter wardrobe. From a warm color palette to jewel tones and feathers, this line personifies Bollywood glamour, with its international appeal. Although she is considered a fairly new designer, Rachel Roy is anything but unfamiliar with the world of fashion. After she earned a Bachelor’s degree, Rachel quickly earned recognition as a stylist for magazines and music videos. She later became the Creative Director for the urbanwear label, Rocawear in the Women’s and Children’s departments. The label can be found in department retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom.

Cadillac Chronicles ■ Fresh off the bliss that came with the release of her second solo album, Beyonce stars in Cadillac Records, a peek into the Chicago recording scene during the 1950s and ‘60s. Equal parts sex, violence, race and rock and roll, this flick follows the rough-and-tumble lives of some of America’s greatest musical legends. According to comingsoon.net, Leonard Chess, played by Academy-Award winner Adrian Brody, ires a talented but undisciplined blues combo that includes quiet and thoughtful guitar prodigy Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright) and impulsive and colorful harmonica player Little Walter (Columbus Short). Fascinated by the sound of the music — and eager to cash in on the record burgeoning record business — Chess arranges a recording session for Waters. Waters’ early recordings start moving up the R&B charts and receiving heavy play. Chess treats his musicians like family — he buys them a Cadillac when they record their first hit record — although the line between business and personal sometimes causes conflict with his increasingly talented and successful stable of artists. Cadillac Records also stars Gabrielle Union, Cedric the Entertainer, Mos Def and Emmanuelle Chriqui. The movie, directed and written by Darnell Martin is set to release December 5.

the secret life of bees, collier.k12.fl.us . A thousand splendid suns, ko-go.gr

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd Curl up with a cup of hot cocoa and immerse yourself in this historic fictional account of the 1960s. Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life is shaped by her blurred memory of the afternoon of her mother’s accidental death. When Lily’s black “stand-in mother,” Rosaleen, insults three racists in town, they escape to Tiburon, South Carolina, a town that holds the secret to Lily’s mother’s past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, is forced to confront her own dark past and learns what it means to be a family. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini A Thousand Splendid Suns is a breathtaking story set against the volatile events of Afghanistan’s last thirty years — from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban to post-Taliban rebuilding — that puts the violence, fear, hope, and faith of this country in intimate, human terms. It is a tale of two generations of characters brought jarringly together by the tragic sweep of war, where personal lives — the struggle to survive, raise a family, find happiness — are inextricable from the history playing out around them.

TV News... Melrose Place 2.0?

■ The second coming of 90210 is doing extraordinarily well, and now CW, the network who produces 90210, is laying the groundwork for a reincarnation of Melrose Place. According to the National Post, the plot of the Melrose Place remake is still murky. The search is under way for a writer to pen the project. Just like with the CW’s new 90210, Darren Star, creator of both Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place, isn’t expected to be involved. Melrose Place ran from 1992 to 1999 and was set in a small apartment courtyard complex in the West Hollywood district of Los Angeles. According to wikipedia.org, Melrose Place’s blend of melodrama, black humor, unapologetic sexuality, and shocking moments have helped the show remain relevant in the years since the show went off the air. It was the launchpad for many stars including Marcia Cross, Kristin Davis, Kelly Rutherford, Alyssa Milano, and Rob Estes, among others.

ccording to PEOPLE, 22year-old reality star Lauren Conrad has signed on to write a three-book series of young adult fiction for HarperCollins. The books — the first of which is scheduled to hit shelves in the summer of 2009 — will be loosely inspired by Conrad’s own experience going from an ordinary teen to a reality TV star. “It’s definitely influenced by my own life,” Conrad tells PEOPLE. “The books are about a girl who moves to L.A. and stars in a reality show, so obviously there are some similarities.” In the report on PEOPLE, Conrad’s best gal pal and The Hills costar Lauren Bosworth has already been offering advice. “I run ideas by Lo and I’ll ask for her opinion because I value my friends’ opinions,” says the budding author, who has completed the outline for the first book. But not everyone in Conrad’s life has been clued in to her plans to pen a series. “Honestly I haven’t told everyone,” she admits. “I’ve told my best friends and they have all been really supportive. Nobody was worried.” ■

up in SMOKE... We all know the dangers that come with cigarette smoking, but now universities are stepping in and placing smoking bans on campus

n September, Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education imposed a smoking ban on all 14 state university campuses, according to an Associated Press report. In the report, Chancellor John Cavanaugh said the state law means a smoking ban on all campus grounds, not just academic buildings or residence halls, and that he put the campuswide bans in place accordingly. In an editorial published in The Eagle, American University’s official student newspaper, words weren’t minced as the staff voiced their displeasure. “People who don’t want to smoke should have a legitimate chance to avoid it. But to apply this logic to a whole campus is ludicrous and borders on insanity,” the editorial read. “Worst of all, most students affected by the smoking ban didn’t know of the ban

Studies show that smoking upon college students are decreasing. Universities are still enacting smoking bans on campus.

until they were already students. This is unfair to smokers who chose to attend these schools before the ban went into effect. With this information, they could have chosen to attend other more smokerfriendly universities.” Proponents of university smoking bans cite the effects of secondhand smoke, and many feel these outlaws protect the health of non-smoking students. Jamie Thornton, a University of Arkansas student told The Morning News, the local newspaper for Northwest Arkansas, “Secondhand smoke takes minutes off my life, not just a smoker’s. Is it too much to ask that somebody like me, who has asthma, gets to breathe too?” The American Lung Association states 130 colleges and universities across the county have enacted similar no-smoking policies. >>

SMOKING By The Numbers

>> According to a report released by the American Lung Association, only 19.2 percent of college students are lighting up, which is the lowest percentage since 1980. >>The report states that the rising cost of cigarettes and stricter laws have motivated students to quit. >> According to the ALA’s report, the average price of a pack of cigarettes has increased from 42 cents in 2000 to $1.16 in July 2008. >>In a survey of 119 colleges, students at 109 schools reported seeing tobacco promotions in on-campus events. According to a U.S. News report by Allison Go, Arizona State University announced it will lay off 200 or more faculty associates and will most likely increase some class sizes, from about 300 to 1,000 students, for example, the Arizona Republic reports. ASU currently employs 991 “faculty associates,” employees who often work part time and are neither tenured nor tenure track. At one ASU campus, walls have already been removed in some buildings to accommodate larger classes. ASU expects $25 million or more in additional state budget cuts (on top of the $30 million already made), which is the largest amount of the state’s various public universities. Officials did not announce which departments would see the greatest reductions.

Lady in Red

A new study conducted by Live Science reveals the color red makes men kissy-kissy for women. In five psychological experiments, University of Rochester psychologists tested how different colors affected men’s attitudes towards women. In one experiment, test subjects were shown a picture of a woman that was framed by either a red or white border and asked to answer a series of questions, such as: “How pretty do you think this person is?” Other experiments contrasted red with gray, green or blue (keeping saturation and brightness levels the same between the different hues). In the final study, the shirt of the woman in the photo was digitally colored red or blue. In this experiment, men were questioned not only about their attraction to the woman, but about how they would plan a hypothetical date with her. For example, one question asked: “Imagine that you are going on a date with this person and have $100 in your wallet. How much would you be willing to spend on your date?” In all the experiments, women shown framed by or wearing red were rated significantly more attractive and sexually desirable by men than the exact same women shown with other colors. When wearing red, women were also more likely to be treated to a more expensive outing. “It’s fascinating to find that something as ubiquitous as color can be having an effect on our behavior without our awareness,” said study team member Andrew Elliot.

The Report Card, which is available online at greenreportcard.org, notes a number of positive trends in the past year. Almost 17 percent of schools improved more than one letter grade overall. In addition, 66 percent of the institutions polled have fulltime sustainability staff positions, up from 37 percent in 2007. More than 44 percent of the schools signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, aimed at achieving reducing carbon emissions. Other trends include increased reliance on local farms and food producers to supply campuses, widespread recycling initiatives, the use of alternative-fuel vehicles, and green building policies. Orlowski explained, “Making a commitment to sustainability, ranging from local food sourcing to renewable energy investments, is no longer a priority of only environmentalists … such innovations are capturing the attention of everyone, from college trustees to admissions applicants.”

>> Parachute Pants Made famous by: Rappers from the 1990s Why they need to come back: They are comfortable. They are shiny. Plus, they look totally rad when you are quickly scooting sideways across a dance floor. Why they don’t: They look dopey in all non-dance situations. >> Monocles Made famous by: Rich people from the 1910s Why they need to come back: Nothing says classy like a monocle. I defy you to do any activity while wearing a monocle and not feel like you are better than all the other nonmonocle wearing peons surrounding you. Why they don’t: The undeniable urge to speak in a snooty British accent while wearing one.

>> Bodices Made famous by: Women from the 1800s Why they need to come back: They make the waist look skinnier and the bust look bigger for about one percent the cost of plastic surgery. Why they don’t: They apparently caused severe damage to the internal organs of those who decided to squeeze themselves into them. Hey, no pain, no gain. >> Hats with buckles on them Made famous by: The Pilgrims Why they need to come back: Because they are like 30 different kinds of awesome. Why they don’t: There is no con position here. Go out right now and get yourself a buckle hat!

>> Wicker Hats Made famous by: Vaudvillians, sideshow barkers and political candidates from the 30s Why they need to come back: Nothing says frustration like punching a hole through the top of one. Why they don’t: Things made of straw are typically pretty itchy. Plus, it is probably not very prudent to wear a piece of clothing simply so you can destroy it when you get angry.

Final Exam Study Tips Cram no more! Finals are here, stress levels are at their highest and it seems as though professors are showing no mercy. Here, you’ll find tried-and-true pointers to help you ace those pesky exams

modernmatriarch.wordpress.com

By Michael Jones

88  JAYE | DECEMBER 2008

>> Study Tip Number Two: ■ Savvy study groups. Sure it’s a great excuse to order pizza and get some work done, but you and your study buddies should power up the prep. “Don’t just quiz each other. Don’t just give the definition of schizophrenia-provide how it is diagnosed and treated, too. Think about the ‘why’ and the ‘how,’ not just the ‘what,’” says Nist. By becoming totally immersed in a topic as a group, there will be fewer surprises come test day. Speaking of tests... >> Study Tip Number Three: ■ Ace exam anxiety. “A lot of students who say they have test anxiety have it because they didn’t study,” says Nist. However, she adds, there are many legit cases of freezing up once the papers

89  JAYE | DECEMBER 2008

are distributed, which mostly stem from a lack of confidence in a subject you find tough. How to cope? “Learn relaxation techniques like deep breathing; don’t participate in talking with students about the exam right before the test; tell yourself that you’re prepared for the test and know the material.” >> Study Tip Number Four: ■ Recognize clues and cues. So how are you supposed to know what to expect from a college exam if you’ve never had one before? Even worse, what if you only have two or three for the semester, and can’t afford to mess up? The best way, says Nist, is to simply ask the professor. “Most professors are willing to share sample questions before the exam.” Of course, if you pay close attention, you can also get an idea of what your prof considers a hot topic, by the emphasis he or she places on a particular point. Beyond that, carefully looking over the syllabus and speaking with students who’ve taken the class already are great ways to get an academic edge, adds Nist. >> Study Tip Number Five: ■ Stop school stress before it starts. How, you ask? Do whatever you can to maintain a good

balance of classes. “Try not to put three or four reading-heavy classes (such as sociology, history, and political science) into your schedule,” says Nist. You can get a book-break by interspersing performance classes like speech or computer science and/or problem-based courses like math or biology into your semester. Nist says that as a first-year student, “It’s hard when you’re at the bottom of the food chain, so to speak, to get the schedule you want, but try as much as possible to have balance.” >> Study Tip Number Six: ■ Study at the library. The college library is one of the most loathed places to go on campus, especially by the end of the semester. Resist this urge to hate the library, because it can actually give you more time to have fun. Instead of trying to study in a dorm or student housing where there are constant distractions, college students should study in the library where they are most efficient. This will allow students to study more in less time, leaving more time to do the fun stuff. Don’t become one of those college students who never steps foot inside the college library. >>

>> Study Tip Number One: ■ Make some mega-flashcards. “When you used flashcards in high school, they contained factual information. Go beyond that with additional information and examples,” advises Sherrie Nist, coauthor of College Rules! How to Study, Survive, and Succeed in College (Ten Speed Press, 2002). Then group cards together by topic to study the concept as a whole, instead of memorizing isolated tidbits.

>> Study Tip Number Seven: ■ Meet with the professor. College students who are unsure of what could be on the next test should talk to the professor before class, after class, or make an appointment. This will allow the student to speak with the professor face to face, and ask direct questions. Some professors will give you clues and ideas of what to study and how to study if you just ask. Speaking with the professor is always a bonus for the student because it shows the student is actually concerned about the class, and the professor gets to know you, which some professors consider when it comes time for grades.

rue beauty transcends photo shoots, fashion shows, and magazine covers. It embodies poise, personality, charm, and can I say it? Swagger— you know that unteachable intangible that you either have or you don’t. It’s true, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But even a blind man can see that this girl is stunning. This girl, you ask? Sonia Fashola. She has it all: the brains, the looks, and the congeniality to top it off. With a illuminating smile and impeccable personal style, her aura is pretty formidable to ignore. Sonia, 22 years old and originally from Islington, London, has already had a fair dose of reality. As confident as she is now, you wouldn’t be able to tell that her past was full of hate and discrimination from her peers, friends, and sometimes herself. It’s hard to believe that the same thing that enhances her allure happens to be the very thing that plagued her through her childhood and teen years: her dark complexion. A topic that is widely overlooked and has never really been understood is the epicenter of Sonia’s upbringing. In middle school, she felt like she had to do twice as much as the other girls at school just to fit in. “I remember working out excessively in the 7th grade. Never wearing dark colors and putting on make-up that was way too light for my skin.” Going through these extreme measures just to feel accepted by society was the norm for Sonia and continued to be her reality into her high 94  JAYE | DECEMBER 2008

Sonia’s goal is to break down the stigmas that come with being a darkerskinned woman.

school years. During this time, she continued to have a low self-esteem and her insecurities about her skin color persisted. Interestingly enough, as she got older, people started to notice her grandeur. Her peers admired her beauty and sometimes assumed she was already a model even before she was. Still, not even the most sincere compliments from her community could sway Sonia’s own opinions about herself. “Regardless of what people told me I looked like, I didn’t see it. I honestly couldn’t find it within myself to believe that I was pretty.”

Her personal epiphany didn’t arrive until after an impromptu outing to a fashion show hosted by Vivica Fox. “I was just there to watch my sister, but everybody was asking if I was a model and if I was in the show. It was very flattering and I think that’s when I started to entertain the idea.” After meeting new designers and a few of the right people, Sonia began to receive call after call requesting her presence at photo shoots, fashion shows, and catalogues. “The picture of me on the cover was actually my very first time in front of the camera. I was nervous at first, but after a while it came

naturally. This was becoming my niche.” Just when Sonia thought she was getting a hang of the model scene and all it took to be a part of it, she got a rude awakening. It was time for Sonia to begin looking for an agency to represent her; however, to her surprise, the agencies didn’t like what they saw. Once again, Sonia’s skin color was a problem. “I wasn’t what anybody was looking for. If it wasn’t my skin color, it was my natural hair texture. My frustrations and insecurities from the past came rushing back.” Sonia’s struggles with representation began to spill over into other aspects of her life. Falling for photographers, men in the industry and just about any man who paid her attention almost got Sonia caught up in a dangerous lifestyle. And after trying out for America’s Next Top Model four times and never making it, she began to feel that her dark skin color was the one thing that was holding her back so she resulted to skin bleaching. “My mother found out about me bleaching my skin and told me that I was beautiful just the way that God made me.” ■ It was only then that Sonia began to envision beauty as a state of mind. She realized that all of humanity could tell her she was beautiful and see something in her, but in order to get over this complex she had to love herself. “It was hard, but becoming comfortable in my own skin helped me realize my worth. I faked my confidence for a long time until it finally stuck.” Sonia continued to do freelance work as a model and is

still at it. Even though the agencies aren’t interested, Sonia’s exotic look remains a hot commodity among some designers and editors. But on the other hand, the prejudices in the entertainment world still persist. “We look at models like Alek Wek and think that my look is ‘in’, but the truth is, that’s for high fashion, not catalog. The It girls now are Beyonce, Rihanna, and Halle Berry—all lighter-skinned women.” For Sonia, the ideal situation would be for girls like her to have the opportunity to choose if they wanted to model in high fashion or catalog. She realizes that the model industry is about fads and trends, but in the larger scope of things, she doesn’t want girls aspiring to be models to go through the pain she has endured. “When I’m in front of a camera now, I feel empowered, uplifted, and like a goddess and I think every girl should naturally feel this way. We deserve it.” For this reason, she intends to not only have her own model agency in the future, but to also start a non-profit organization that uplifts girls and boys in high school. “I have a million things that I want to do. I want to rip the runway in Milan and get a PhD in medical social work, but starting an organization for teenagers is the most important. High school is a difficult transitional stage and we don’t realize how many kids we lose to low self-esteem.” Sonia’s passion for self-love, perseverance and can-do attitude is both touching and inspiring. By breaking down self-inflicted barriers and wounds from others, Sonia has become an incredibly engaging young woman who is light years ahead in the game. ■ JAYE | DECEMBER 2008  95

e’ve all heard these three bone-chilling words many times before. Whether it was in that high school health class we didn’t see the purpose in, our persistent parents etching into us the need to use protection, or in the buzz of gossip that ripped through the halls. If asked to list the many different forms of STDs, the majority of us would do quite well. So, why is it that one in five people in the United States has an STD? By Jillian Risnes

It isn’t for the lack of information, there is a plethora of literature at our disposal.. Google “STD”, and over 75 million links are available. December 1, marks the tenth annual World AIDS Day. Last year, an estimated 33.2 million people worldwide were living with HIV, and this is only one of the many STDs. what you should know

Chancroid Extremely infectious, yet curable, Chancroid is seen more and more in the U.S. The cause, bacteria which will produce ulcers and other sores in the genital area. Chancroid can be passed through contact to a sore during sex, or by other contact made with the ulcer’s fluid. The transmission of HIV will be much easier if left untreated.

HIV HIV is a virus passed through blood, sexual fluids, or breast milk causes AIDS, and “about half the people with HIV would develop AIDS within 10 years after being infected”. HIV is Unlike many other STDs, HIV, then, can be passed to the infant of infected mother during any stage of the pregnancy or breastfeeding. It can also be passed through the sharing of needles to inject drugs.

Chlamydia Over 1 million cases of Chlamydia are reported yearly. Also treatable bacteria, Chlamydia can be passed during vaginal or oral sex. Symptoms of Chlamydia will appear 1 to 3 weeks after having been infect, and that is if it any appear at all. Untreated, a person with Chlamydia may develop PID and possibly even infertility.

Human Papillomaviruses (HPV) 40 types of HPV exist and it is considered the most common STD — at least 75 percent of the reproductiveage populations has been infected with sexually transmitted HPV at some point in life.” It can lead to genital warts or warts in other areas of the body. HPV may also cause cervical cancer and penile cancer. No cure is available for HPV.

Crabs Crabs “feed on human blood”. Crabs will move from the pubic hair of one partner to another during close contact. Crabs have the ability to live up to 24 hours on their own, so crabs on bedding, furniture or clothing can be transmitted between individuals as well. Itching is the most recognizable symptom. Treatments can be as simple as taking a prescription.

Nongonococcal Urethritis (NGU) This infection is very often a cause of Chlamydia, and can be passed during all forms of sexual contact. NGU’s effects spread from urinary tract infections to more serious infections in the eyes, ears, and lungs for any babies exposed to NGU during birth. Several treatments are available for NGU with the most common being Azithromycin and Doxycycline.

Genital Herpes Herpes is passed through “mucouscovered linings of the mouth or the vagina or the genital skin.” Microscopic tears in the skin allow the virus to enter the body, and it settles near the spinal cord. The virus will then move to area originally infected and cause an outbreak. “It is believed that 60 percent of sexually active adults carry the herpes virus.” There is no cure for herpes.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) PID is another infection which affects the upper genital tract and reproductive organs in females. PID can cause infertility in women (it “is the leading cause of infertility in women.”) or even, some more serious difficulties. PID is most commonly a result of other STDs going untreated. Antibiotics are generally used to treat PID and other STDs caused by PID.

Gonorrhea Gonorrhea is a bacterial STD and can be passed during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Women often don’t see symptoms, and men will begin seeing symptoms a few days after being infected. Like Chlamydia, Gonorrhea can lead to PID or infertility should it go untreated. The only way to accurately determine whether a person has Gonorrhea is through testing.

Syphilis Syphilis is “a curable, bacterial infection, that left untreated will progress through four states with increasingly serious symptoms.” Syphilis may take months to develop enough to be detected. Antibiotics can be used to treat the infections. “Untreated syphilis from early to late stages can produce symptoms from 17 days up to 30+ years.”

Hepatitis There are five forms of Hepatitis: A, B, C, D, and E. Most common cases are forms A and B. Each is transmitted differently. Hepatitis B is passed if a person’s “mucous membranes or blood are exposed to an infected person’s blood, saliva, semen, or vaginal secretions”. Hepatitis will cause damage to the liver and may even cause cancer. 5,000 people die each year in the U.S.

Vaginitis/Trichomoniasis A variety of germs lead to this infection in the vagina. “If you are like most women, you will have some kind of vaginitis at least once in your life.” The American Social Health Association states that, “the healthy vagina has a balance of many different kinds of bacteria.” It goes on to say that bad bacteria will rapidly grow and cause infections. These imbalance of good and bad bacteria is what creates this infection.

hether it is a weekend getaway to a snowy mountaintop cabin or a cruise on the Caribbean, having the appropriate wardrobe is vital to comfort in a foreign location. There are a few key elements that must be in the suitcase before takeoff: necessities and enough room for purchases made at the vacation destination. choose a sporty pea coat, preferably in a bright color or bold print. Pea coats are versatile and comfortable. They can be worn with a turtleneck and jeans for a daytime look, or with a sweater-dress and tall boots for a fun evening out. In order to free up room in the suitcase, it is recommended to wear the coat with the outfit worn on the plane or at least with carry-on items. This rule can also apply with any boots brought on the retreat. Another necessity is the sweater. There are four different variations that create four differ-

This sweater style is the easiest sweater to pull on over a t-shirt to make ready for an on-the-go look. Next is the turtleneck. A tighter fitting turtleneck in a neutral or basic color can be paired with straight leg jeans and heels for a little bit of a dressier look. Add a statement necklace for extra emphasis. JAYE HOLIDAY TRAVEL a v-neck sweater. This can also be a dressier sweater if matched with the proper shirt and bottom. For a more classic look, a stark white button down shirt is perfect. To dress it up, add a silky shirt with full ruffles. This look goes best with wide leg pants or denim and a platform heel. The last sweater variation is the cardigan. This season, the oversized boyfriend look is the latest trend in cardigans. Whether for just lounging around or for lightweight outerwear, the boyfriend cardigan makes for a great casual piece. Wear with a simple t-shirt, comfortable denim, and top off with a scarf for extra warmth. To wear indoors or underneath sweaters, make sure to pack plenty of quality long-sleeved t-shirts in different colors from retailers like J. Crew or Banana Republic. Not only will the four different sweaters create four different outfits, but also the shirts underneath will allow you to really mix it up, thus providing at least eight different looks! Also, bring an assortment of lightweight neck scarves as a functional and fashionable accessory. Packing different styles of pants will add depth to the various outfits, so be sure to remember a skinny jean, a wide-leg trouser-style jean, and never-fail, always-chic straightleg denim. In addition to a two-piece look, bring at least two dresses—A little black dress is ideal for most occasions—to have depending on the

plans made for the vacation — it is always good to be prepared. ■ Tropical holiday vacations have grown in popularity. Miami, Florida; Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; and The Bahamas are all hot spots for a warmer holiday. In the winter months, tropical areas have high temperatures in the 70s and low temperatures rarely dipping below 50 degrees, making the weather more like springtime. For these locations, one of the most important pieces is the swimsuit. In the summer, the bikini might be the suit of choice. However, for this winter vacation, pack a trendy and stylish one-piece. The styles are endless: cutouts, halter-top, or strapless, a one-piece can still be sexy while accentuating the best assets and hiding problem areas. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen; sunrays are still harmful even in the winter months!

be able to buy the same long-sleeved shirts that you would for a winter vacation, as long as they are lightweight. The weather will be warm, sunny and breezy, so long sleeves are not a stretch. Bring lighter colored and lighter fabric denim to pair with feminine tops, and cropped pants to go with dressier items. Dresses are more appropriate for a tropical vacation than they would be for a snowier destination. This season, Australian designer Sacha Drake has created a Little Black Dress that is ideal for a vacation. It can be converted into several different styles including strapless, halter, and one-shoulder. Another choice for dressier attire is a high waist skirt. These skirts are easy to dress up with the right accessories, or to dress down with flats and a basic top. Either way, a flowing high waist skirt works for many different body

“Whether it is a weekend getaway to a snowy mountaintop cabin or a cruise on the Caribbean, having the appropriate wardrobe is vital to comfort in a foreign location.” Other key items are tops. For tropical locations, pack blousy shirts that are airy and will keep you cool in the sun. Floral prints are a hot trend this season, so it should not be too hard finding floral blouses. But do not limit yourself to floral just because of the atmosphere. Bold, bright colors are also an option. You will probably

■ Bring a positive mindset no matter if things don’t go your way at times during the trip.

■ Remember a digital camera and extra batteries to capture all the memories.

■ Use every opportunity to dress to impress. If you feel good, you will look good in your clothes, and the vacation will be one to remember!

■ Don’t forget extra money to buy gifts to bring back to your family and friends or even yourself.

■ If you take prescription medicine, take a copy of your prescription in case you lose yours along the way.

■ The same goes for eyeglasses, bring an extra pair — even an old pair! — in case you lose yours or your contacts tear.

when individuals and organizations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS pandemic. 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. The concept of a World AIDS Day originated at the 1988 World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention. Since then, it has been taken up by governments, international organizations and charities around the world. From its inception until 2004, UNAIDS spearheaded the World AIDS Day campaign, choosing annual themes in consultation with other global health organizations. In 2005 this responsibility was turned over to World AIDS Campaign (WAC), who chose Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise as the main theme for World AIDS Day observances through 2010, with more specific sub-taglines chosen annually. This theme is not specific to World AIDS Day, but is used year-round in WAC’s efforts to highlight HIV/AIDS awareness within the context of other major global events including the G8 Summit. World AIDS Campaign also conducts “in-country” campaigns throughout the world, like the Student Stop AIDS Campaign, an infection-awareness campaign targeting young people throughout the UK.
