Memo from mike

JAYE January 2009

no looking back

MR. PRESIDENT Top: President Barack Obama waves to his supporters and to the country with First Daughters Sasha and Malia and First Lady Michelle. Below: Kick start your spring semester and new year by dropping any extra weight you picked up eating delicious holdiay food and dessert. Our tips on page 133 give you all you need to make it happen.

I

’m my harshest critic, so at the start of a new year, you can find me thinking back on the mistakes, pitfalls and slipups that occurred during the previous one—and I’ll bet I’m not alone. But with Barack Obama’s victory in last November’s presidential election, we can now look forward and turn the page and truly start anew. Of course, challenges still lie ahead, but President Obama’s victory and the subsequent galvanization of the country that has occurred in such a short time is the testament to our country’s resolve, progress and willingness to hope and dream again. We honor our president, who will be inaugurated this month, with our “Change is Here!” photo package on page 54. To help you change your lives for the better this year, we’ve prepared a list of pointers to help you simplify your life in 2009 on page 87. With a few tweaks in your routine, you can maximize your college experience. I’m certain there’s an idea for each of you, and I urge you to give them a try. The issue is packed with heaps of fresh pieces of info to ensure that ’09 is your best yet. So leave the struggles and stresses from last year in the past, pledge to not turn back and promise to look forward with your head held high. E-mail me and let me know what your plans to have a flourishing new year are, and as always, have a ball reading the issue!

Michael Jones Michael Jones Editor-in-Chief jayemagmike@gmail.com

STAR

■ Born and bred in Houston, Solange Knowles, younger sister to Beyonce, has created an image of her own. Never one to try to please the fashion critics, Solange takes as many chances with her personal style as she does her music. A huge fan of accessories, including belts, bags and shoes, Solange is no stranger to high-end must-haves that keep her fans yearning for more — and her fault-finders wondering what the heck is she thinking. Hate her or love her, you gotta respect her.

Lust, Love, Lose Your go-to guide for the trends you gotta get, need to keep and should to stow away

floral dress, $24.80, Forever 21, forever21.com Carolina Herrera

LUST: floral print dress

LOVE: long cardigans

LOSE: messenger bags

>> The beauty of this dress is its versatility: It can be dressed down for day, and dressed up for night. >> Thanks to the black elastic band, a boyfriend blazer matches perfectly — and adds a welcome dose of toughness to an otherwise feminine look. For more warmth, opaque tights do the trick. >> Ankle boots work amazingly well with this dress (again, the sharpness of the boots merge well with the flimsiness of the dress). >> Keep the rest of the extras simple: A bangle or ring is just enough.

>> Although this trend is shown dressed up, by way of Carolina Herrera, the long cardi can instantly chic up a jeans and t-shirt combo. >> If you're yearning to wear your spring standbys that are waiting patiently to be worn again, you don't have to wait for warm weather with this essential layering piece. >> Don't be afraid to add depth to your looks by cinching your cardigans with skinny or wide belts. >> This wear-with-anything must-have will save the day when a blazer or jacket is too professional.

>> Rachel Bilson is style darling, but her messenger bag stands no chance among the heaps of structured totes and satchels that define this season's It accessories. >> Designers are making handbags that are roomy like messengers but still retain the flash of traditional bags. >> Of course you need a bag large enough to handle your mammoth textbooks, but that doesn't mean you should sacrifice style for utility. While shopping, think about how to satisfy both needs.

JAYE STYLE CHIC CHARLIZE (Below) Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron sports a LBD at “Late Show with David Letterman” in 2008. The dress was from Narciso Rodriguez’s fall 2008 collection. Those who adore Rodriguez note his attention to detail, like in the criss-cross design on the dress. Rodriguez worked at Cerruti, Anne Klein under Donna Karan and Calvin Klein before he launched his own label (Right) An ideal evening dress that will work wonders for years to come. Dress, $1085, Narciso Rodriguez, net-a-porter.com

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT Narciso Rodriguez

FIRST LADY FAVORITE On what some say was the biggest night of her life, First Lady Michelle Obama donned this dress from Rodriguez’s spring 2009 collection as her husband, and the newly-elected President Barack Obama delivered his victory speech. Michelle received mixed reviews for the frock.

38  JAYE | JANUARY 2009

Despite initial resistance from his parents, the Parsonseducated fashion designer is adored equally by industry insiders and our new First Lady. As he enters his 11th year, Narciso Rodriguez continues to attract fans and design marvelous musthaves

■ The son of Cuban immigrants, Narciso Rodriguez didn’t get the green light from his parents to enter the fashion industry immediately. “They wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer or a dentist. So when I dared to tell them, the s--- hit the fan. It was crazy. But no matter how many times I heard ‘No,’ I just kept going. I never thought about ‘no’. ‘No’ wasn’t an option,” the designer told hispaniconline. com in 2007. Clients like Salma Hayek, Claire Danes, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel Weisz, and Sonia Braga are glad he followed his dreams, and in a little over 10 years, Rodriguez has earned a reputation for designing wearable pieces that flatter almost any figure. Industry professionals also rave about Rodriguez — look no further than to 2005 when he became the first American to win the Council of Fashion Designers of America Womenswear Designer of the Year Award two years in a row. In 2003, Rodriguez released a women’s fragrance, and a men’s fragrance will be released this year. For more information, visit narcisorodriguez.com.

Less is more This winter, take a minimalist approach to make up like model Chanel Iman backstage at Bill Blass.

Jaye beauty bulletin must-have fragrance

<< I love how Christina Aguilera isn’t afraid to push the envelope with her bold lipstick and eye-catching blonde locks. And even though she had a baby last year, she’s back on her A-game body-wise.

DIY Pedis: We’re in a recession, and times are tough on everyone financially. That’s why I was thrilled when I came across this salon-quality pedicure kit for under $10 by Kiss ($9.99 at Walgreens). It has it all: toenail clippers, cuticle nipper, foot brush & stone, cuticle pusher and cleaner, pedicure file, toe separators, nail file, fourway buffer, manicure sticks and a travel pouch.

Money-making tidbit: If you need some extra cash, use this pedicure kit, and do your girlfriends’ pedis as the temps rise and spring sandals start to reappear.

Shower power One of my resolutions this year is to take care and love myself first. Thankfully, I can do it on a budget with sporadic shower scrubs to help me unwind and have radiant skin. Healthy Living has a easy recipe that I just had to share: You need: >> 1 medium cucumber, peeled and grated (use a cheese grater) >> 1 cup buttermilk >> 1/2 cup sea salt or kosher salt Directions: >> In a small bowl, mix the cucumber and buttermilk. >> Add the salt and blend into a thick paste. >> Relax in a warm shower for 5 minutes, allowing the heat to open your pores. >> Apply the scrub, paying special attention to dry areas like elbows and knees, then rinse. (Use this scrub before shaving, because the salt can irritate freshly shaved skin.)

Marvelous Mascara It’s products like Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes, right, ($27) that keeps me running back to Sephora for all my makeup needs. This is a cosmetic essential that will do the trick for those of you with short eyelashes.

Q:

I have tons of blemishes, but concealer isn’t doing the trick. What should I use? Let me start by explaining that concealer is used mainly for lightening dark, under-eye circles and is not meant for blemishes, and according to experts, since it is one or two shades lighter than your skin tone, it will draw attention to the blemish. For blemishes, I suggest using a foundation stick that matches your skin perfectly and spot-applying to any blemishes or problem areas. Visit your local drugstore for tons of foundations or seek out the skills of a make-up artist at a department store.

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Viewed as the archetypal modern African novel in English, Things Fall Apart chronicles the life of Okonkwo, a leader and local wrestling champion throughout the nine villages of the Igbo ethnic group of Umuofia in Nigeria, his three wives, his children (mainly concerning his oldest son Nwoye and his favorite daughter Ezinma), and the influences of British colonialism and Christian missionaries on his traditional Igbo (archaically spelled “Ibo”) community during an unspecified time in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner This classic novel, divided into four sections, takes place in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County. The first is from the viewpoint of Benjy Compson, a thirtythree year old man with mental retardation. The second segment is set eighteen years earlier than the other three and is told from the point of view of Quentin Compson, the Harvard-educated student who commits suicide after a series of events involving his sister Caddy. The third is from the point of view of their cynical, embittered brother, Jason, and the fourth is from a third-person-limitedomniscient narrative point-of-view focused on Dilsey, the Compson family’s black servant, and her unbiased point of view, which allows the reader to make his or her own assumptions from the actions of the other characters. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad According to wikipedia. org, This highly symbolic story is actually a story within a story. It follows Marlow as he recounts, from dusk through to late night, his adventure into the Congo to a group of men aboard a ship anchored in the Thames Estuary. The story details an incident when Marlow, an Englishman, took a foreign assignment as a ferry-boat captain, employed by a Belgian trading company. Although the river is never specifically named, readers may assume it is the Congo River, in the Congo Free State, a private colony of King Leopold II. Marlow is employed to transport ivory downriver; however, his more pressing assignment is to return Kurtz, another ivory trader, to civilization in a cover up. Kurtz has a reputation throughout the region.

Gift cards are synonymous with the holiday season: They give you the freedom to buy what you want, and they make shopping a snap — a win-win situation, right? Many experts are noting the enormous amount of businesses closing as a primary reason to gift cards losing their luster, but since their inception, many consumers rarely used them to their advantage. We turned to focusedmarketing.com for a few facts on gift cards: >> Fifty-five percent of gift card recipients need more than one trip to deplete the value of their card. >> The average recipient spends 20 percent more than their card’s initial value. >> In 2004, the average value of gift cards was $59. >> In 2005, consumers spent at least $35.3 billion on gift cards. >> Two-thirds of adults who like to receive them enjoy receiving them throughout the year. >> Eighty-one percent of consumers purchase gift cards for birthdays versus 67 percent for holidays. >> When retailers switch from paper gift certificates to gift cards, they sell anywhere from fifty to one hundred percent more.

Every state have safe-haven law — laws that allow distraught parents who fear their children are in imminent danger to drop them off at hospitals without being charged with abandonment — and while Nebraska was the last state to adopt one, they are the first one to spark nationwide controversy. Nebraska’s version of the law had no age limit, and according to officials, of the 35 children who have been dropped off at hospitals since the law went into effect in September not one has been an infant. All but six have been older than 10, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. Because of this, the state senate voted 41 to 6 to replace the current version of the law — which has no age limitation — with a 30-day age limit. – Michael Jones Information from cnn.com used in this report.

Post-election racial tensions erupt ■ There’s no denying the hurdles that were cleared with Barack Obama’s victory in November’s presidential election. While the election of Obama closed a chapter in America’s long story marked by civil rights voyages, that cost people’s lives, both famous and not; it turned the page to another unfortunate chapter where hate-mongering citizens are determined to rewrite some of the sad, tragic tales many thought President Obama’s victory had delivered us from. Although the attacks may not be those championed by Jim Crow, they’re still as vicious. Whether it’s a fake bomb threat, vandalism of homes and vehicles, the hanging of nooses or hostile statuses on Facebook and contemptful MySpace bulletins, the messages are the same: Instead of adapting to the contemporary ideals of today’s America, we’ll drag those demons of centuries past into tomorrow’s future. It’s up to our generation to follow our President’s lead and not allow that to happen. Since we call our great nation the “melting pot,” we should “Although the not only use that term figuratively, but attacks may literally too. Thankfully this isn’t a impossible feat. After all, hate him or love him, those are the principles President Obama ran his campaign on. So take a cue from Mr. President and do your part to write your own page in a historic chapter of American History, because as Mr. President said, there’s no White America or Black America — just the United States of America. – MJ

The Palin Factor

The presidential campaign may be over, but Sarah Palin’s reign on the national scene isn’t. Is her ascension up the political ladder good for women, young and old? Robyn Sapenter shares her two cents

JAYE opinion

n many ways, Palin Fever has made many people sick—the campaign’s been over for months and she’s still on the scene conducting interviews seeking doors that she’ll “plow throught,” but the truth of the matter is a female nominee on a major ticket is a big step in the direction of female equality on a national area. While her political stances may not be your cup of tea, her involvement with the presidential campaign begs to ask the question: has Sarah Palin’s involvement helped level the playing field for women nationally? From Olympic sprinters to congresswomen, the fairer sex has made strides throughout history that only validates their equality—then there was Sarah Palin. She took the nation by storm as the Republican vice-presidential nominee. She charmed her supporters with her no nonsense, hockey-mom next-door attitude. Conversely, Palin angered her critics with her lack luster interviews, arrogant attitude, and frivolous spending, but whether you love her or hate her, Palin’s presence on a national stage has given a new appreciation to the old adage, “Anything you can do, I can do better” While I have no delusions of grandeur about Sarah Palin being the next great leader for women’s liberation movement, I can respect the strength and honesty displayed during the campaign, but the truth of the matter is there is a difference between a liberated women, and women’s liberation. While woman’s liberation is a movement for the equality of life for all women, a liberated woman enjoys successes and progression as an individual and not apart of a greater good. Sarah Palin has all the makings of a liberated woman. While she is celebrated as a woman who “broke into the good-ole’ boys club,” her singular success does not account for the millions of women who are still disenfranchised, under educated, and treated unequally. When you look at the record, Palin does not support issues that truly impact women’s equality: Everything from sex education, abortion, freedom of speech, and birth control are not only ignored by her voting record, they are also manly ignored by her political party. While her accomplishments should be an example to other women, her progression can only empower others. Her success in itself does not enact laws to help other women. Without responsible legislative activity in congress and the women in positions of power, the women’s liberation movement will become a falsity of life, and sadly, a movement without substance and seriousness. A true feminist believes in support, power, and progression. She believes in uniting in a sisterhood, that demands equality for all people. Unfortunately, these are all things I believe Sarah Palin knows little about. ■

shopping guide There’s no reason your style should suffer because the economy’s in ruins. The key is knowing what you can skimp on and what pieces are worth the splurge. Here, we give you all the tips you need to inexpensively stay chic By Chandler Stephens

Recession-Proof Tip #1 Shop Diffusion Lines ■ A savvy way to start your new year in style while staying current on trends is to shop diffusion lines — collections that allow top designers reach consumers at a lower price point. Fashion-followers who shop diffusion lines still want the designer’s magic in their clothes without the price tag. Some prominent diffusion lines include Marc by Marc Jacobs, DKNY by Donna Karan, and D&G by Dolce and Gabbana. Recently, retailers and department stores have featured exclusive lines by high-end designers. Money-conscious shoppers can visit Kohl’s for Vera Wang’s Simply Vera or to Target for Richard Chai’s exclusive lower-priced line. Launching her line in February 2009, Charlotte Ronson is another designer who is reaching out to a retailer by offering I [Heart] Ronson to JCPenney.

72  JAYE | JANUARY 2009

The line features the same aesthetic inspiration that Ronson includes in her contemporary line. The items in the line retail from $15 to $65, an elephantile step down from her namesake line. Another designer about to enter the diffusion line market for specific retailers is Alexander McQueen for Target. The line will be named McQ and will feature lightweight and blossomy silhouettes. The price point has yet to be released, but is assumed to be affordable to fashion-forward Target shoppers. Diffusion lines are a great way to stay current and stylish in a troubled economy. Designers are fully aware of their prospective market that cannot necessarily afford the ready-to-wear lines that is showcased during the fashion weeks. Three of the most important keys to being a JAYE Lady is to be classy, economical, and fashion-forward. Budgetfriendly lines provide the style while being easy on the wallet. >>

times tiring pursuit, bargain hunters can type in exactly what they are looking for and the power of a search engine pulls up a list of several different stores and sites that have the particular product. In addition to saving gas money, energy, and beating the crowds, online shopping gives other rewards. Secret sales, free shipping, and a wider variety of products also bring in more customers. Overall, online retailing allows customers to shop from home, work, school, or on the go, which saves time and allows customers to accomplish other tasks. Consider looking online for shopping deals and steals!

Online Shopping Tips Below are some hints to help you maximize your online shopping experience. >> Use your credit card. Here’s the perfect opportunity for you to bring out the plastic. Most credit card companies cover you for all but $50. Be sure to spend only what you can pay when the bill comes in the mail. >> Read the fine print. Pay attention to return policies, shipping costs, privacy statements and payment options — you don’t want to run into any surprises. >> Print and save. It’s always a good idea to keep receipts and confirmation numbers on file to bring out in case something goes wrong. Have a special folder for all of your online transactions and don’t be afraid to print any document that pertains to your order. After all, better safe than sorry, huh?

JAYE MONEY MATTERS

Recession-Proof Tip #3 Shop Off Season ■ Retailers and shoppers alike know that shopping can hurt the pocketbook, especially in hard global financial times. Customers scour stores for the best deals, and stores design sales to attract customers. Retailers have created a way for consumers to stock up on items that they will not necessarily need in the particular season, but will serve them much purpose in the future: shopping off-season. At the end of a season, stores need to make room for the upcoming season’s items. So, for instance, to-

wards October and November, stores will usually have racks upon racks of t-shirts, shorts, tank tops, and Capri pants marked down to upwards of fifty percent off. Shoppers may not think of wearing these items during the cold winter months, but they will have that many less items to think about buying when warmer weather rolls back around. Similarly, the best time to shop for winter coats and boots is during the summer. It may not be the best time to wear them, but these items seem to be scarce or picked over when the customer really needs them. In addition to going to regular retail stores, shopping outlet stores

off-season is an even better way for customers to get the most of their money. Often times, stores will send clothes to their respective outlet stores in order to make room for new items. As stated on FinWeb.com, a portal for financial planning tips, “Name brand clothes at a fourth of their regular price—that’s hard to beat anywhere”. Outlet stores will also have a wider selection considering the physical size of their store. This is a great way for retailers and shoppers to help each other. So in order to prepare for the next season, get a head start, shop a season early, stow the pieces away and save tons of money. JAYE | JANUARY 2009  75

JAYE MONEY MATTERS Swapping clothes with girlfriends is a great way to recreate looks without spending tons of money.

Instead of constantly giving money to retailers, going shopping in a friend’s closet will give the bank account a break.

Recession-Proof Tip #4 Have a Swap Night with the Girls

■ Shopping is not the only way for a JAYE lady to get new looks for her wardrobe. Although buying new clothes is ideal, there is a cure for the outfit boredom blues. A fun way to create new outfits is to get a group of girlfriends together for a day to swap each other’s clothes. Instead of constantly giving money to retailers, going shopping in a friend’s closet will give the bank account a break. Girls frequently go shopping together, so they know what looks good on each other. Friends with similar taste will more than likely covet certain items in each other’s wardrobe. It is refreshing to put together new outfits, especially knowing that money was saved in the process. For example, dresses are a key component to spicing up one’s attire. Most times, a nice dress will get two to three uses in one year. Also, dresses can be expensive for women trying to keep their wardrobe up to date abiding by recession proof guidelines. As an alternative to letting a dress sit in the closet for months on end, lending it to a friend for an event or date will get more usage out of the dress. This rule can go for any item, not just dresses. Outfits can only be worn one day at a time, so why not share the fashion wealth with friends? If innovative and creative thoughts are constantly in motion, more and more money has the potential to be saved! ■

Teresa’s rise to the top

Student by day; Web-crawler by night, Teresa Wu loves all things Internet-related. But it’s not just fun and games for her — nope, she uses the ‘net for more sensible reasons: to create opportunities and widen her network

qual parts funny, engaging and astute, Teresa Wu knows her stuff when it comes to the information superhighway. “I realize the Internet is here to stay,” says Wu, a junior communications major at the University of California-San Diego and blogger-extraordinaire (find her at byteresawu.com). “The key to making the Internet work for you is to own it and be fearless,” the self-proclaimed “unabashed social media geek” explains. It’s not easy flaunting fearlessness when everyone from your parents to professors to career advisers are warning you of the potential pitfalls of your Web presence. Wu, however, says it’s all about presentation. “In person, you can have one identity with your friends and another in more professional environments; but with the Web, you essentially have one identity, so it’s important to find a way to represent both your personal and professional sides without either one compromising the other.” Wu says she has worked hard to build an identity that depicts her in a way she wants to be represented, and along the way, she’s reaped a few rewards. “There are so many benefits to being active on the Web. You meet tons of people through blogging and you can establish credibility with potential employers — and that 80  JAYE | JANUARY 2009

credibility landed her two internships this summer.” “I interned three days at Glamour in their Web department and two days at Mediabistro.com (a Web site that publishes various blogs and job listings for journalists). And both of my supervisors at each internship loved that I had a blog because it showed them that I understood new media.” Although Wu’s >>

internships were unpaid, she says they were without-a-doubt worth it. “Industries are so competitive these days, and you also have to take into account the state of the economy but if you’re able to take an unpaid internship, you gain amazing contacts with both editors and other interns that expand your network, so you kind of have to suck it up  —  everyone has to start somewhere.” Wu’s journey to internship nirvana wasn’t always smooth. “I applied for 53 internships  —  it was a busy spring,” she admits with a hearty chuckle. “But you have to believe in yourself and pursue your dream. For every potential lead I get, I also get 20 rejections, so it’s important to have determination.” Perhaps Wu’s tenacity stems from her university’s “theory-based curriculum.” “We

don’t really have PR or journalism classes, so it’s forced me to explore and find my own career paths and practical opportunities.” Those opportunities aren’t so hard to come by if you prepare yourself, Wu suggests. “When I applied for my internships, I didn’t have an enormous amount of experience,” Wu, who wrote for her school newspaper and a few Web sites before she applied for her internships, makes clear. “I researched, prepared and wrote a list of every single possible question I thought the editor would ask me on my phone interview and studied them to make sure I was ready.” Sure, Wu was ready to take her internships by the horns, but she’s not numb to the impact of the economic crisis on college students. “Of course, I’m apprehensive when it comes to >>

the economy,” she says, explaining that she intends to graduate a semester early. “Obviously, it’s a difficult time to get a job, but it’s always going to be difficult. That’s why it’s so important to hone your skills, be at the top of your game so you’re the crème of the crop.” In today’s college environment, students encounter trials left and right, and Wu isn’t immune to those challenges. “I think the modern student has many more expectations,” Wu expresses. “Not only are you expected to make good grades, you have to go after internships, join clubs and build your resume — all at the same time.” Wu says it’s a test of time management skills and she’s learned “work and play intersect more.” Wu, who loves cupcakes (“The $4 pretty ones”), and says she’s a “mainstream pop kind of girl” when it comes to music loves how the Internet has changed popular culture. “Our generation loves peeking into the lives of celebrities, which is why the Perez Hiltons and other gossipy blogs are so successful.” Celebrities themselves have started to embrace the Internet, which is a great thing, according to Wu. “Britney Spears and Shaq have joined Twitter, and Kanye West has a blog so fans feel connected to their favorite celebrities without the barriers of PR people.” While we’ve traded in monotony of landline telephones for the immediacy of “tweets” on Twitter and other social network84  JAYE | JANUARY 2009

the simple life

JAYE YOUR LIFE alone when I say that this year, I want to make completing my daily tasks more efficient, timeand energy-saving. Apply some of the methods into your routine and see if they work. Some are easy to implement, others take a little more effort, but all of them should help us make the most of our new year. Happy streamlining! 1. learn to say no This isn’t always fun to do, but the quicker you realize that you aren’t Wonder Woman, the easier you realize that it’s OK — and necessary — to say no. By picking and choosing the tasks that you can complete by giving 100 percent, you can decrease your stress levels and focus your time and attention on tasks you’re passionate about and interested in. 2. Take a day to winter clean Don’t wait for spring to do your purging. Grab a few boxes and trash bags and get rid of the things you don’t need. Go through each room and remove any clutter that takes up precious space. When you get to your closet, put all of the clothes you don’t wear together and make a stop at your local Salvation Army or Goodwill to make a tax-deductible donation, or google “consignment shops” around your campus and exchange your the pieces you don’t want for some you do, or, in some cases, for cash.

As college students, we’re already busy enough. But our lives could be such easier if we streamlined our daily tasks. Here, our list of 18 ways to simplify your life

3. edit your computer files Go through your files and delete the ones you don’t need anymore. Invest in a flash drive and save documents that you think will come in handy, and delete those that aren’t important anymore, including notes and assignments from classes you took semesters ago. >>

By Michael Jones

On any given day, I wake up to an e-mail inbox of 20-plus messages — some drafts of stories for me to review and approve, pitches from aspiring contributors to the magazine, a fair share of time-wasting spam, and more —  a spiral full of notes to review before going to class, a closet full of staples begging to be chosen for my daily outfit and text messages from friends outlining the happenings on and around campus. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, and I know I’m not

Above: Kill two birds with one stone when you do your winter cleaning by taking the clothes and accessories you don’t want or need to Goodwill or a consignment shop. Right: Put on a happy face as you go through each of the rooms in your apartment or dorm getting rid of the clutter and dust. Go the extra mile and use organic cleaning products that decrease your carbon footprint.

JAYE YOUR LIFE

Experts suggest limiting how often and how long you check your e-mail will make your life easier.

5. have some “you” time You’re at a pivotal time in our development, and how you react to the obstacles life throw your way can help determine how tough your resolve is and how you respond to adversity. That’s why it’s crucial to spend some time with yourself to realize what you really enjoy and makes you happy, and conversely, what makes you angry. Not only will this self-reflection benefit you, it will help you with your relationships and increase the effectiveness of your interactions with people.

6. learn to live frugally With the current state of the economy, it’s important to make every dollar count. Over at zenhabits.net, they compiled a list of ways to make the most of your moolah: >> Look for used first. If you need something — I mean really need it, not just want it — see if someone you know has one that they don’t use or need anymore. Send out an email to family or friends, or just ask around. You might be surprised. >> Eat out less. One of the biggest expenses in our daily lives is eating out — the average person spends well over $2000 a year on eating out. Restaurants are expensive, including fast-food (not to mention the health hazards). It’s much cheaper to cook your own food. >> Stop online impulse buys. To curb impulse buys, create a 30-day list. When you want to buy something, other than a true necessity (medicine or food, for example), put it on this list, with the date you added it to the list. And make it a rule that you can’t buy anything for at least 30 days after you put it on the list. And stick to it. You’ll find that you buy a lot less with this system. >> Use the library. Instead of buying books, check them out. The library often also has a great selection of DVDs (depending on your area), saving you even more. >> Alcohol in moderation. If you drink one beer or a few beers a day, that adds up to big money each month. Some drink even more than that. It’s expensive. If you can cut your drinking to the occasional party, and once in awhile with friends (not all the time), you’ll save tons.

Visit your campus library often to help save money.

7. patiently eat your food As students on the go, it’s not always possible to stop and savor your food. But taking the time to savor your food will not only force you to slow down, it can help you lose weight, and maximize your food’s digestion. Take your time and enjoy your food. Make these breaks count in the midst of your seemingly nonstop schedule.

8. Drive slower Driving slower isn’t only safer but it helps you calm down and appreciate the journey, even if it’s only to the student union. Additionally, it’s also easy on your gasoline bill, putting a few extra dollars in your pocket. 9. write things down Most universities distribute free planners that have all of the important dates already published on the calendars. Write down important dates and events and reference your notes throughout the day to make sure you’re completing your daily tasks. 10. quality over quantity It’s not about the amount of “stuff” in your life, but the value of those things. Try to keep that in mind this year. >>

4. Minimize your communications Our generation’s been saturated with tons of ways to keep in touch with each other. Many of us have learned that is can be a blessing and a curse. Experts advise checking, replying and sending e-mails at specific times each day for a set amount of time. Some suggest taking it a step further and applying that method to your IM, social networking, and cell phone usage.

Try to pay your bills online and at once to get them out of the way. >>

11. don’t schedule tasks back-to-back. Although most students like to schedule classes back-to-back to try to get them out of the way, many time-management and stress experts suggest leaving space in between appointments and meetings to decrease the feeling of always running around. It will allow you to catch a quick cat-nap, grab a bite to eat, study or just gather your thoughts. 12. join organizations that align with your career aspirations. If you’re a communications major, join your university’s journalism club or campus newspaper. Or if you’re an accounting major, find clubs that are stocked with like-minded people that can help you expand your network. It will make things simple when you need advice to be able to rely on people whom you know understand where you’re coming from. 13. Listen Take the time to call your parents or someone you love and listen to them. You can gain wisdom from someone older which can simplify your life.

90  JAYE | JANUARY 2009

14. Budget wisely Zenhabits.net offers 10 tips to increase the effectiveness of budgeting to help maximize your time and minimize your stress: 1. 60 Percent Solution. Fit your regular monthly expenses within 60% of your gross income, so that you have room for savings, retirement and spending money. 2. Fewer categories. Use broad categories like food and gas and spending and utilities. Use what works. 3. Pay bills online. As much as possible, pay your bills online. These would be most of the bills in the first category above — utilities, rent or mortgage, cell phone, Internet, etc. 4. Automatic savings. Make your savings automatic. Every time your paycheck is deducted, have a scheduled transaction transfer a set amount from checking to savings. 5. Cash. For everything else, use cash. If you’re doing automatic bill payments and savings deductions, the only things you’ll likely need cash for are gas, groceries and fun money. Withdraw these amounts in cash twice a month, rather than using checks or credit cards. 6. Envelopes. If you use cash for three categories, for example, use three envelopes. When the money is gone, you’ve spent your budgeted amount. If necessary, you could transfer cash from one envelope to another, and there’s no need to adjust your budget. 7. 20 minutes a week. You should devote 20 minutes a week to ensuring that your finances are in order. 8. Fewer accounts. You should have one checking account and one or two savings accounts (one for emergency fund and one for periodic expenses). 9. Dump credit cards. Simplify by just having one. 10. Pay all bills at the same time. You can pay all your bills and be done with it.

15. get over that grudge It takes so much energy to hold onto things that have happened in the past. Don’t let that backstabbing friend, cheating boyfriend or absent parent keep you from excelling and being the best person you can be in ‘09. 16. schedule monthly dates with the girls And we don’t mean nights out at the parties and clubs, many college students already do that. Try out an art museum or go to dinner and to a play. You will enhance your cultural taste and bond with your girlfriends in different environments. 17. Go to bed early at least one night each week. Take a night off from cramming and head to sleep early one night each week. You will wake up refreshed and ready to accomplish more tasks throughout the day.

Go to bed early one night a week to prevent falling asleep in class.

18. Choose 10 meals Maria Gracia, of getorganizednow. com, says to come up with 10 standard meals that you just rotate. Put the work up front into coming up with a variety such as Day 1: Chicken Dish, Day 2: Pasta Dish, Day 3: Fish Dish, Day 4: Vegetarian Dish and so on. Once the initial planning is done, you’ll never have to think about your meals again. Shake it up every 11th day and go out to eat, or order in. This will save time and help you stay healthy. ■

safeguard

your skin A

s the seasons change so must your skin care regimen. The winter months bring low dehydrating humidity and temperatures that dry out the skin. The harsh temperatures deplete the skin of its natural Lipid layer, which causes the skins moisture to evaporate. The skins reaction to these temperature changes is to become irritated, chap, and hypersensitive. There are several ways to protect your skin from the harsh temperatures of winter months. >> Use a humidifier. The heat used inside during the winter months dries out the skin. A humidifier puts moisture back into the air and prevents the skin and nasal passages from drying out. >> Switch to an oil-based moisturizer and moisturize more frequently. The oil-based moisturizers create a protective layer over the skin that retains more moisture than water based products. The best product would be a skin moisturizing ointment because an ointment according to its definition is 80 percent oil and 20 percent water. Water based moisturizers would be creams and lotions. >> Use sunscreen. Sunscreen is not only for the spring and summer months but its important year round. The sun has an 80 percent reflective power off of snow, which proves how important sunscreen is during

winter months. Anytime the skin is being exposed to the sun it should be protected. >> Don’t lick your lips because this causes chapping. Be sure to keep your lips moisturized during the winter months with a lip balm. Olive oil, shea butter, and coconut are key products to look for in a lip balm. Also be sure to take your vitamins because a low intake of Vitamin B2 can cause the skin to crack in the corners of your lips. >> Exfoliate, but avoid harsh peels. Exfoliation is important because it rids the skin of dead cells. Just be careful to avoid products that are alcohol based. It is important to not strip the skin of vital oils. Look for products that are deeply hydrating. Avoid putting anything on your body externally that you wouldn’t ingest internally. This is why homemade facial masks and exfoliates tend to be the healthiest for skin. Here are a few recipes based on your skin type: For dry skin, try these masks: ■ An egg yolk mixed with olive oil and warmed honey ■ Sour cream ■ Plain olive oil ■ Avocado For oily skin, try these masks: ■ Dissolve a teaspoon of baking yeast in a small amount of warm milk, wait until foamy, then apply (best done in

the bath tub) ■ Puree flesh of a tomato and mix with some potato flour to make a paste ■ Cucumber (it will whiten your skin) ■ Beaten egg whites with a few drops of lemon juice (great for getting rid of blackheads) ■ Carrots. >> Lay off the scorching hot showers. After a long day in the cold a hot shower seems like the relief your body needs. A hot shower maybe relaxing but can be detrimental to the skin during the winter months. Forgo the steaming hot water for a lukewarm temperature. >> Dress in layers. Dressing in layers is not only fashionable for the sake of fashion but is also fashionable for the skin. Two of the most common factors for dry and itchy skin are overheating and sweating. Dressing in layers allows you to remove clothing as your body heats which prevents you from overheating and sweating. >> Wear gloves. The skin on the hands is the thinnest of the body parts and requires extra protection. The hands have less oil glands this makes the hands more susceptible to itchiness and drying. If you wear wool gloves put a thin cotton glove underneath to prevent the wool from irritating the skin. Stay warm, enjoy the winter with revitalized, healthy and vibrant skin! ■

>> the 411 on obesity ■ According to The Obesity Society, obesity is the excessive accumulation of adipose tissue to an extent that health is impaired. Obesity is usually determined using the body mass index or BMI, the standard measurement of choice for many health professionals. BMI is based on a weight-to-height ratio. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Obesity Education Initiative Expert Panel developed guidelines for identification, assessment and treatment of obesity. Overweight and obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, as well as worldwide. Data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics indicate that the prevalence of obesity, defined as a body mass index >30 kg/m² has increased from 12.8% in 1976-1980 to 22.5% in 1988-1994 and 30% in 1999-2000. Roughly 31% of American adults meet the criterion for obesity - about 59 million American adults. More than 64% of the US adult population have a BMI >=25 kg/m². Approximately 300, 000 deaths a year are attributed to obesity, prompting leaders in public health, such as former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D., to label obesity “the second leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States.” Source: obesity.org, answers.com/obesity

■ According to WebMD, Gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size, which reduces the amount of food you eat and thus the calories consumed. The procedure can be done by making a large incision in the abdomen or by making a small incision and using small instruments and a camera to guide the surgery. Risks common to all surgeries for weight loss include an infection in the incision, the staples pulling loose, a leak from the stomach into the abdominal cavity or where the intestine is connected (resulting in an infection called peritonitis), and a blood clot in the lung. About one-third of all people having surgery for obesity develop gallstones or a nutritional deficiency condition such as anemia or osteoporosis. Fewer than 3 in 200 (1.5 percent) people die after surgery for weight loss.
