I think I speak for the entire staff, ladies: Congratulations, and we’re excited to see what’s next in what’s sure to be a long list of accomplishments.

Even if you aren’t graduating, isn’t it nice to finally have some sort of a break? As Brianti and I were reviewing cover lines, we breathed a sigh of relief at “The End-of-School Issue” cover line in the top left corner, because we all know what that means: swimsuits, sun and socializing with friends and family. Our fashion team wants to make sure you enjoy everything the warmer months have to

It’s true—even after celebrating my 25th birthday last month, I still depend on my mom for so much­—advice, comfort and a few laughs. As we celebrate Mother’s Day on May 8, I’m blessed and honored to have such an amazing women who are not only great moms, but amazing women.

summer internships It’s the end of the semester, and that means it’s time for summer internships! And experts say that internships are as vital to jobseeker success than ever before.

“Not only do college interns garner more job offers than applicants without that experience, but jobs that grow out of internships tend to command higher starting salaries,” Edwin W. Koc, research director at the National Association of Colleges and Employers, told the New York Times.

But what about the dreaded unpaid position? “Students need to view unpaid internships as an investment in the future, by perhaps working 15 or 20 hours a week at them and taking a parttime job to support themselves,” Lauren Berger, chief executive of Internqueen.com, an online internship listing site, advises in the same Times article.

Set a goal to learn something each day during your internship and take tons of notes—trust us: They’ll come in handy down the line.

show & tell Live Sex Demonstration at Northwestern University

A

live sex demonstration at Northwestern University proved that there are some things that should be left outside of the classroom.

Professor J. Michael Bailey hosted an optional seminar following his human sexuality class. However, the seminar was taken to a new level when two volunteers, who were at

the seminar to speak to the students, proceeded to give students a live demonstration. Faith Kroll (pictured below) and her fiancé, Jim Marcus, proceeded to use a high-powered sex toy on Kroll in the demonstration. Morton Schapiro, university president, has released a statement speaking against the demonstration saying, “I simply do not believe this was appropriate, necessary or in keeping with Northwestern University’s academic mission.”

After years of being lambasted, “boomerang kids”—those who leave their parents’ nest, only to return a few years later—are finally being cut some slack, thanks to a study conducted by Teresa Swartz, which appeared in the Journal of Marriage and Family, which shows that as TIME Contributor Hans Villarica puts it, “Mom and Dad may be acting in an adaptive and responsive way, providing much-needed support when their struggling offspring need it most—especially during hard economic times when jobs are scarce and incomes tend to shrink.” Explains Swartz: “Today, the road to adulthood is much longer and more arduous than it was thirty years ago. Parental aid serves as ‘scaffolding’ to help young people who are working towards financial self-sufficiency and as 'safety nets' for those who have experienced serious difficulties.”

College admissions Take Dramatic Dip for The Class of 2015

fighting back The Supreme Court has finally begun hearing the largest lawsuit in history, which was filed against Walmart on behalf of the company’s female employees. The decade-old suit accuses the company of systematically discriminating against its female employees, who have been working with the company since 1998. Betty Dukes, a Pittsburg, California Wal-Mart greeter, filed the suit in 2001. The suit, which was filed by Dukes and five other female employees, claims that the company paid female workers less and promoted fewer females than male workers.

Recent reports indicate that college admissions have dropped across the board. Harvard experienced an all time low in admission numbers, accepting 6.2 percent out of 35,000 applicants. Columbia University saw a significant increase in applicants by 32 percent and only accepted 6.92 percent. Stanford University had a 7.1 percent acceptance rate, Yale University had 7.4 percent and Princeton University had an 8.4 percent acceptance rate. by ju’lia samuels

Balmain—DIY Style!

This season I’m totally feeling the punk vibe. Balmain always does punk so amazingly and I love the brand’s collections every season. I got so inspired by the ripped t-shirts and pants that were all over the runway, however, these t-shirts retail up to $1,000—crazy for something so simple to make right? I decided to make my own Balmain-inspired t-shirt and share it with all of you. Here are the steps and supplies. The Inspiration: Balmain, Spring 2011

The Tools

Step 1: After you wash and dry your t-shirt start snipping small holes in the shirt. The holes can be different sizes. Some holes you may want to cut wider than others depending on how much skin you want showing.

Step 2: Use the safety pins to re-connect the holes.

Step 3: Keep cutting and connecting on the front and back of the shirt until you have the desired amount of holes.

LIZ: Your beauty drawer should be as individual as you are. I think many women make the mistake of using what their best friend uses on her skin, or their sister, or their favorite movie star. Use products that are suited to your individual skin type and issues. If you are uncertain what your type is, ask a professional.

And you do not have to use all of the products from a line just because it matches your skin type. If the toner irritates, stop using it. Or maybe you need a moisturizer from another line or brand. I remember, back before I began using natural products, everyone was using a certain department store brand of skincare. So, of course, I went out and bought the whole line.

While I loved the moisturizer, the cleanser and toner were too strong for my skin. My beauty drawer is a mix of products that I love and know work on my skin, with a few glam items thrown in for fun.

JAYE: How many beauty drawers, makeup drawers, caboodles (whatever you consider it) do you have?

LIZ: As a green beauty writer I sample tons of products. I give lots away to

friends and family, and keep many to use myself. And then there are my tried and true favorites that I have on hand at all times. So…I have many baskets full of products. Probably too much. I have thought of having a product party or selling them on my blog. We will see…

JAYE: How many products do you use on a daily basis?

LIZ: While I do not consider my beauty regimen to be high maintenance, I do use certain products each and every day. Cleanser and moisturizer for face day and night—facial oil in dry months and maybe a bit of >>

LIZ: This is so difficult, because there are so many terrific safe, natural brands out there. But if I could choose only one it would have to be Lavera.They perform like conventional products, are safe, and they carry everything from skin care and makeup to hair and body care. I even used the baby shampoo on my kids.

JAYE: If you could only use one product for the rest of your life, what would it be?

LIZ: Moisturizer. Dry skin looks pasty, wrinkly and lifeless.

The proper moisturizer for your skin not only hydrates but protects and nourishes. It is like food for your complexion.

No makeup can make unhealthy skin look glowing and radiant.

JAYE: Why do you choose to stay organic?

LIZ: The terms “natural” and “organic” are so misused by cosmetics manufacturers.

While I do like the ingredients in the products I use to be organic, the absence of harmful chemical ingredients is actually more important to me. Our skin absorbs these toxic ingredients and they get into our system, with potential to cause anything from irritation to neurological and immunological issues, and even cancer.

Organic means an ingredient was produced without the use of harmful chemicals, Natural means that an ingredient was naturally-derived, though natural is a very vague term. It is best to read labels and follow brands dedicated to safety in cosmetics.

JAYE: Have you noticed a difference in your skin with the use of organic products?

LIZ: I always thought my skin was very sensitive, and while it does irritate more easily than some, it was more so the ingredients I was using than my skin. With safe, natural ingredients I rarely get skin irritation. I have keratosis >>

My beauty drawers hold so many phases that I’ve gone through—makeup phases, hair phases; curly, straight, smoky, simple—I’ve gone from plain to bold to daring. Everything that I use, though, can be altered to use at any given time, for anything- a day at work, a cocktail party, or a night out with friends. I love to experiment, but some products will never leave my beauty regimen… I’ll remain loyal. Here’s a list of my personal faves:

Makeup  Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer in “Fawn” (oil free for summer, regular for winter): This is the one product that I remain loyal to.

It leaves my skin smooth no matter what.  Carmex: Can’t live without it—never have, never will.  MAC eyeshadow palette: the best gift I’ve ever received. This palette travels everywhere with me.

JAYE: What are your favorite makeup products?

LIZ: Jurlique Citrus Silk Finishing Powder ($36; jurlique. com): This powder is absolutely transparent, so no chalky makeup look. It also adds the slightest bit of shimmer to wake up skin, and is light enough for dry skin.

Lavera Mascara ($22; lavera.com): Lavera Volume Mascara has long been my go-to for its silky smooth application. But I have recently tried Lavera Double Black Mascara and it is now in first place. You can apply a little, or just keep layering for a more glamorous look.

Zoya Nail Polish ($8; zoya.com): Buffing your nails to a glossy shine is the most natural manicure, but

some of us prefer a little more color.

Zoya polishes are made without the three most harmful chemicals in most polish—DBP, Toluene, and Formaldehyde—and come in so many colors.

JAYE: What are your favorite hair products?

LIZ: Rare Elements Luxury Hair Care Trio ($110; natureofbeauty. com) is fabulous. My hair is dry with natural wave and can frizz, and many hair care products leave it sapped of moisture, limp, or frizzy. Rare Elements is the most luxurious hair care I have ever used. Love it! But it is pretty pricey. Here’s a tip: To save money use a less expensive shampoo (Lavera makes good ones) and spend a little extra on the Rare El’ements conditioner.—you will be putting your money where it counts. And since you need so little, the conditioner lasts a long time.

It’s customizable, so my shades range from black to matte beige. Most of the colors that I have are neutral, so I can never go wrong. What does this say about me? I don’t like to take risks— everything I need is always with me.  Maybelline Falsies mascara: The one and only mascara that I’ve purchased more than once. I’m all for trying new products, especially mascara—but Falsies has me hooked at the moment!  Physicians Formula Gel liner for hazel eyes: It’s a set of 3 gel liners specifically for your color; the green set includes a black, brown, and purple. It lasts all day, and makes my eyes pop!

Hair  Sedu Pro Flat Iron: I was introduced to this iron when at 14 years old, and have been using it ever since. It straightens hair fast and perfect.  TIGI Bed Head Dumb Blonde Smoothing Stuff: This new addition to my hair routine is flawless. I use it after I straighten my hair. It has a small amount of shimmer, so it makes dull hair beautifully shiny.  Fantasia Olive Oil: This product has been my favorite for years.

As soon as I get out of the shower, I run a quarter-size amount through my hair, and put it up in a towel. My hair is always silky smooth no matter what I do to it afterwards!

three steps to stunning behold, a primer packed with celebrity secrets on how to get the looks they rock with perfection

I can’t recall the number of times I’ve done a makeup look inspired by one of my favorite celebrities on the red carpet, and despite sometimes getting a devastatingly fierce replica of their eye shadow and lip gloss, I would always feel like there was something missing—I just wasn’t getting something about the look right. After much research along with trial and error, I realized that the missing step to my red-carpet ready look was using the correct method and tools to add definition to my face. Pay close attention as I share the three keys to mastering the art of achieving a perfectly beat face, (by “beat,” I mean your makeup if flawlessly, photoshoot ready!) and they are contouring, highlighting and adding blush. –margaret francois Contouring  The first step to contouring is discovering your contour line. You do this by making the “fish face” (sucking in your cheeks) or finding the midpoint between your nose and ears. rom swallowing tapeworms to only eating one cracker per day, women have taken extreme measures in pursuit of a smaller waist, so it’s no surprise that the hCG diet is the latest rage, which claims users can lose a minimum of a one pound per day.

HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone found in the urine of pregnant women and used as a FDA approved fertility drug.

HCG was discovered in the 1950’s as a weight loss drug, and became the diet of choice in the 1970’s. When injected daily and paired with a 500-calorie a day diet (nearly 1,000 calories below physician’s recommended caloric intake) fast results are seen as hCG subsides hunger while burning an unhealthy amount of fat.

Obesity is a national issue in America, and about 66 percent of adults, aged 18-24, are overweight, and 62 percent of them are women. Obesity increases the chances of various health concerns such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, which can lead to increased health problems and reduced life expectancy.

Now, hCG is available in sprays, liquid drops and creams and is sold on the internet. A 500-calorie near-

starvation diet cannot be healthy with or without hCG. The beauty industry bombards us with thin, athletic bodies in our 24-hour media filled lives, making this magical drug a must-have for bikini season.

Originally, hCG was given to patients at in-care clinics over a sixmonth period under doctor supervision. Now, anyone can purchase the drug without a prescription. I can understand why many people say the hCG diet is life-changing because they were on the brink of diabetes and other health problems caused by obesity, but I believe that this hCG

drug is nothing more powerful than a placebo.

The FDA has said there is no evidence that hCG is effective for weight loss. The FDA also gave a warning, first issued in the 1970s, that hCG packaging is required to display this.

Experts said the drug has risks of blood clots, depression, headaches and breast tenderness or enlargement.

America believes in fast fixes and pills up the wazoo for all our problems.

I believe losing weight comes with reward: Working toward a goal of eating healthy and working out, without drugs. 

ou’ve packed your bags. You’ve printed out Google Maps. You’re ready for your long awaited summer travels and nothing—not even rising gas prices can stop you from having the time of your life. But for the healthconscious girl, road trips can be a bit tricky. Not only are you stuck in a cramped car for hours on end, but fast food is notorious for wreaking havoc on daily nutrition and once trim waistlines.

This summer, don’t leave your house without this guide to help you navigate those drive-thrus. We’ll help you make the healthy decisions you need to truly enjoy traveling— JAYE style.

McDonald’s

Best Options: Grilled Snack Wraps: This is a great option while on the road. Coming in at 260 calories and 9 grams of fat, it’s not half bad for a meal on the run. Pair this with 100 calorie apple dippers and you’ve got a light lunch to get you through the day.

Premium Grilled Chicken Classic: If you can do without the greasy side of fries and the sugar filled-coke, this sandwich is probably your best bet. It comes in under 500 calories at 420 with 10 grams of fat. While not awesome, it’s better than most of McDonald’s options which can pack on over half of your daily intake of fat.

Avoid: Fries: Even the small fry has nearly the same amount of calories and more fat than a regular hamburger.

Milkshakes: Some of the milkshakes are not only packed with high fat content, they contain over half of your daily calorie intake.

Shockers: >> Don’t fall for the salads! Even the grilled chicken salads have as many calories and fat as a regular hamburger. >> A three-piece order of Chicken Selects has the same amount of fat as a Big N’ Tasty.

Burger King

Best Options: TenderGrill Garden Salad: 230 calories and a low seven grams of fat. If you avoid the high calorie dressings, this meal could actually be considered healthy.

Five-piece Chicken Nugget: 230 calories and 13 grams of fat. Totally pair this with some apple fries (without the caramel sauce) and you’ve got yourself a stand-up meal.

Chicken Fries: With a low 250 calories and 15 grams of fat, this is a nice grab-‘n’-go option.

BK Veggie Burger: While not the epitome of healthy, with 410 calories and 16 grams of fat, it’s not an awful choice for this menu. Just don’t eat fries with it or you risk packing on more fat grams than you need in one setting.

Avoid: Sidestep french fries, onion rings, and funnel sticks—need we say more?

Shockers: >> The Tendergrill Chicken Sandwich is actually worse than the Jr. Whopper.

Sure, being thin can be nice, and if achieved properly—it can be healthy—but it’s not the end-all, be-all marker for proof of healthiness.

I’m a curvy girl taking the world by storm, and you know what? I am proud of it. I exercise five days a week and eat a healthy diet. But I have what many people in the South call “child-bearing hips.”

Do my curves, or extra “softness” as I call it, mean I’m fat or unhealthy? Don’t judge a book by its cover. Trust me, I know skinny girls with high metabolisms who eat like third graders and they have the highest blood pressure you’ve ever seen.

Health is an equal opportunist. You don’t have to look a certain way or fit into a certain mold to achieve it. However, the media, people and ourselves often times convince us differently.

Take it from someone who has been there: You can’t properly focus on your health if you consistently let your insecurities and body image issues control your life. Emotional eater? Most people are. Only see your flaws? We all have them.

Only then will you be able to successfully take your health by the horns and make the changes you want or need to make.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying be confident and neglect yourself. I’m a confident beast of a woman, but I work hard to consciously try to improve my overall health daily. But if I mope about how much weight I need to lose or fret over every little cupcake I want to eat, I’m not going to get anywhere.

So redefine your definition of health, realize you don’t have to be a model to be able to lead a happy and healthy lifestyle, and embrace you as you are. You deserve a long, beautiful life, but it’s our choice to let go of our insecurities and work to become the best we can be—the healthy way. 

let’s get physical! >> On the search for a way to stay mentally and physically fit without the mundane treadmill sessions at the gym, a young college student stumbled upon a fitness program that’s already paying dividends. Her words of wisdom: Give it try yourself! By Joanna Fantozzi

I am sure that you, as a young collegiate realize that exercise is important for your health. Getting plenty of exercise is something right up there with eating your veggies and doing homework, in terms of “mom-isms” that were drilled into your head when you were younger.

For me, it was always difficult to get started with an exercise routine, especially when I got to college. Now, if you are one of those girls who find it easy to motivate yourself to head to the gym or to go out and take a run every day, then I applaud you and

your intense self-motivation.

Personally, I’m intimidated by university gyms, full of meatheads and girls who can run on treadmills for hours and hours on end. Plus, at my college, you have to reserve treadmills and bikes ahead of time. I have also tried doing Wii Fit, a videogame for the Nintendo Wii with a bunch of simple exercises, “running” programs, and yoga positions. Unfortunately, the program itself is rather tame and designed for older people, or for a fun supplement to other routines.

about my not-so fit lifestyle, until I heard about my school offering a Zumba class a few times a week in the Fitness Center. If you haven’t heard of it already, Zumba is the new dance phenomenon that has become very popular lately.

Besides being a weird word, Zumba is an exercise class that combines Latino and hip-hop dance moves into a fun and exhilarating hour of aerobics and dance. After taking a few classes (and learning that I have to bring about a gallon of water to class because it is quite a work out!), I figured

actually feel like you are accomplishing something, other than learning how to run in place really well. Zumba is also different from any other dance class because you don’t have to learn the moves in a traditional sense, so there is no pressure to become an accomplished dancer. At my school, the class is structured so that you follow whatever the instructor is doing while the song is playing. Although the moves are not taught, they often repeat throughout the song like any dance routine, so it is not too difficult to get

Zumba classes are all structured differently, but each will have you moving and sweating to the music for an hour, with songs that focus on training and strengthening certain body parts (i.e. arms, legs, etc). JAYE: For starters, how old are you, where did you go to school and what was your major?

Caylee Willett: I’m 24. I went to Indiana University– Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in downtown Indianapolis. I have a bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing and Business Management.

JAYE: Why did you start blogging?

CW: Indiana is not a very fashion-focused state, so I started blogging to connect with others who share my interest in style and clothes. To say it has worked is an understatement; I've met so many amazing people. I also like that my blog is a diary. I don't blog to please others; I only blog about things that I like or that inspire me, so I can always look back and see my own personal style evolution.

JAYE: What's the most challenging part of blogging? The most rewarding?

CW: Finding the time to sit down and actually do it is definitely the most challenging part. It really is time consuming! But the rewards outweigh that, and the biggest ones are definitely meeting, connecting with, and inspiring my readers, fans, and new friends.

JAYE: Why do you think there is such an interest in >>

CW: We are real girls with real lives, real budgets (well, most of us…) and real style. Others can relate to this, so they look up to us, and companies and brands want to get their products on us because of this influence.

But I hope there are those like me that don’t take blogging in general too seriously. It’s supposed to be fun! We are just being ourselves; trying to have a voice in this world, expressing our creativity, and building friendships based on similar interests.

JAYE: Do you think the blogging craze has staying power or it's just a phase?

CW: I think it has staying power.

Fashion is always changing, so there will always be new inspiration and new blogs, and people will want to continue to follow the style evolution of their favorite guys and gals.

JAYE: How much time do you devote to your blog each week?

CW: I try to sit down every other day and either post or get something ready for the near future.

JAYE: How would you describe your style?

CW: It's simple and chic with an edge. I love to add feminine, vintage, bohemian, and/or tomboy influences into my look, based on my current mood and inspiration. Staying classic and effortless is always big for me—I'll never do anything too crazy or stray from my personal style, no matter what is “in.”

JAYE: What are your career aspirations?

CW: I want to continue to build my career around the

business side of fashion. I currently work for a very large world-wide retailer and moving up within this company is something I can see myself doing for the long haul. Other than that, a merchandising/styling position would be perfect for me, because I'm a very visual and aesthetically driven person, but I also love the Internet, working with numbers, expressing myself through the written word, so finding something that combines all of these would be a dream.

CW: Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang, Isabel Marant, Chloe, Acne, and Rag & Bone are at the top of my list. I can't afford it, so I don’t own anything from these designers, but I look to them for outfit inspiration and always try to find knock-offs of my favorite pieces.

Alcohol has lurked in the shadows of

fraternities, sororities and dorm room parties for decades. It’s gone from the stereotypical keg party to consuming federally prohibited beverages that have resulted in serious injury and even death. Instead of regulating drinking, our college lifestyles have conformed to make alcohol a mainstay and, in many cases, a necessity at social events.

Most resources for information on drinking rely on listing the pros and cons of drinking, but they’re missing the most important information—how a student’s life before and during college make excessive drinking seem like a good option.

Adolescent Alcoholism The modern-day attitude of adolescents and their parents are casual when it comes to booze because there has been a shift in how families operate, says Kitty Harris of Texas Tech University, a psychotherapist specializing in adolescents and young adults. Nowadays, it’s normal to skip family dinners, for families to be products of divorce and for both parents hold demanding careers, which leads to a poor support system, Harris explains. By the time young adults enter college, they already developed substance abuse problems and will sometimes make decisions, like whether to attend a party school or Ivy League university, based on the presence of alcohol.

Tessa Vining, director of the Intervention Moves Parents and Children Together (IMPACT) program at the Phoenix House, says students also use

alcohol to help deal with homesickness, feelings of depression and anxiety in a new environment. Students are also under academic pressure and will use it to relieve stress.

Vining says alcohol also acts as social lubricant. College students are constantly encountering new people from diverse backgrounds and drinking helps “break the ice,” so to speak.

Deanna Hill, a 19-year-old college student from Long Island, New York, says she drinks to get drunk.

Although she says she is an outgoing person when sober, she enjoys drinking because it makes the night more fun because she becomes more social after a few drinks and she met a lot of her friends while inebriated.

“For some reason I find it harder to have a good time without drinking, especially when everyone else around is drinking,” she admits.

The annual Cooperative Institution-

al Research Program’s (CIRP) survey of the nation’s students who are entering four-year universities and colleges, showed worrisome results regarding the mental health of incoming freshman students. The survey showed more students than prior years rated their academic abilities and drive to achieve as “above average” or in the “highest 10 percent.” The results show a positive ambition, but also raises concern because these traits lead to more stress.

Shore,” and it’s even sold on cocktail menus in Miami, where season two of the show was filmed.

Even news reports are constantly drawing our attention toward alcohol.

We are always seeing celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen who struggle with their addictions.

The ban on Four Loko, an alcoholic beverage mixed with caffeine, was front-page news for weeks. Because our society is bombarded with a constant news cycle, 24-hour broadcast and instantaneous Internet news, we are given constant exposure to these stories.

Advertisers have also learned how to use new media to their advantage.

The alcohol industry markets their product from the strategy of using billboards to ads in iPad applications. Advertisements make alcohol seem like the cool thing to do, says Vining. A 2009 study by Radboud >>

Memory Loss.

Memory loss, which is common in alcoholics, is reported by a large number of students after heavy drinking. A study found that 54 percent of frequent binge drinkers forgot where they were or what they did while drinking at least once a year.

Growth Effects.

Your body may not be finished developing until your early 20s. Studies show that drinking may upset the hormonal balance needed to aid the development of muscles, bones and organs.

University Nijmegen, Netherlands, found that participants who watched movies and commercials with alcohol present were more likely to consume more alcohol than those who were not exposed to alcoholic beverages. The study, published by Oxford University, was conducted by having participants watch an hour worth of movie clips with commercial breaks. Some participants were exposed to alcohol and some were not. Those who were exposed drank, on average, 1.5 glasses more than those who were not.

Harris says college students are now drinking an excessive amount in one sitting or combining alcohol with unsafe ingredients. The reasons people choose to drink have not changed since the beginning of time, but the attention drinking gets has.

The newest product flying off the shelves and into the hands of college students is Whipped Lightning, whipped cream with 15 percent alcohol mixed into the recipe. According to their website, the topping was created to “dress up any drink.” A product of Maple Grove Products, in Atlanta, Ga., Whipped Lightning is currently available in 14 states and retails at $11 a can.

Changing the Norm There are those who accepted drinking in college as a part of life, and those who willing to change this standard. Texas Tech’s Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery (CSAR), a program for students who are recovering from alcohol and substance abuse, aims to change the standard. Red Watch Band, a national program launched by Stony Brook

University, is a bystander intervention program that trains students to prevent death from alcohol. Dr. Suzanne Fields, whose son died from an alcohol overdose at Northwestern University, created a program to prevent alcohol related deaths after she asked students at her son’s funeral why didn’t anyone cut him off from drinking or call for help and their response was they did not know you could die from alcohol.

“It stressed me that the current education was not sufficient,” says Fields.

Students are trained in recogniz-

ing signs and symptoms of acute alcohol poisoning, CPR and how to call for help. The program involves a curriculum where students role play situations they can run into in a college environment. Universities can sign up through the Red Watch Band website (redwatchband.org) to have this program active on their campus.

Programs like these are small steps that contribute to the long-term solution to the problem. Says Hunter, who is the national coordinator for Red Watch Band: “Students can relate to the program since they have been in the circumstances before.” 

Three interns from three different industry dish their secrets that are sure to leave your bosses impressed not only with your work ethic, but your style too

Tina Liu, a student at New York University and a fashion internship extraordinaire explains, “When going to an internship at a fashion publication, I think it's important to look the part, which means you can bend the rules of interview-etiquette to your will, if only slightly.” When asked about what she wore to a recent interview, Tina explains, “Instead of going with the traditional skirt or dress for my interview with W magazine, I opted for a silk jumpsuit from Aritzia. Of course, I wanted to look polished, so I paired it with black heels, a blazer, and a Rag & Bone bag.” Tina’s interning staples were “Keds, which are comfortable yet stylish and go with everything. They are perfect for running around the city in while carrying garment bags!” As well as, “Heat Wave by NARS. It’s an electric orange-red and is my go-to lipstick when I want to pull an outfit together. Also, anything with big pockets is great so you can carry pens and other little odds and ends with you—you will definitely be thankful for it later!”

For a business perspective, I commissioned advice from Anne Louise Korallus Shapiro, who interned at Forbes, a magazine known for reliable business news and financial information. Because her internship was more about looking traditional rather than trendy, she often wore “buttonup blouses that were never low cut and had straps thicker

than three fingers wide.” Anne Louise explained that she would tuck her blouses neatly “into high-waisted loose skirts that were always only two or three inches above the knee, nothing shorter. Some places do not allow shorts, but I had a pair of camel, silk long shorts that I loved because they were super comfortable.” She recommends wearing a blazer or cardigan over any top to keep your look professional and well kept. Anne says, “A favorite of mine is black, tuxedo style, and has shoulder pads from H&M.” To get a feel for the music industry, I spoke with Dani Merkrebs, who worked at VH1 in the Music and Talent department. Dani said, “For my interview, I wanted to appear chic and cool, but I also wanted to remain in line with whatever business casual meant to MTV Networks.

I decided to go with black straight-legged jeans, a blouse, and a three-quarter-sleeve blazer. Dani is a self-proclaimed “jeans and T-shirt kind of girl,” so she was excited to be in a place where she felt comfortable expressing relaxed style.

“Much to my surprise, everyone was incredibly laid-back, so for the rest of the summer I stuck to jeans, vintage tees and sneakers or flats. Because I am 5’10”, my summer must-have is a funky pair of flat sandals. During the summer it’s easy to find those jeweled, or brightly colored sandals that look awesome and are completely comfortable.”

Salmon with Sweet Chili Glaze, Sugar Snap Peas + Pea Tendrils Now that the semester’s come to a close, spend your free time whipping up a spring-appropriate (and healthy!) dinner?

Ingredients Nonstick vegetable oil spray 1/4 cup Asian sweet chili sauce* 3 tablespoons soy sauce, divided 2 tablespoons finely grated peeled fresh ginger, divided 6 6-ounce salmon fillets with skin 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 3 garlic cloves, minced 8 ounces sugar snap peas, trimmed 1 1/2 tablespoons Chinese rice wine or dry Sherry 3 cups pea tendrils** or pea sprouts** (about 6 ounces) 1 teaspoon Asian sesame oil preparation  Line rimmed baking sheet with foil. Coat with nonstick spray. Whisk chili sauce, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, and 1 tablespoon ginger in small bowl. Place salmon fillets, skin side down, on prepared sheet. Spoon chili sauce marinade over and let stand at room temperature 30 minutes.  Preheat broiler. Spoon any marinade remaining on baking sheet over salmon fillets. Broil salmon without turning until browned in spots and almost opaque in center, 6 to 10 minutes, depending on thickness of fillet.  Meanwhile, heat vegetable oil in wok or heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add remaining 1 tablespoon ginger and minced garlic; stir until aromatic, about 30 seconds. Add sugar snap peas and stir until crisp-tender, about 2 minutes. Add remaining 1 tablespoon soy sauce, rice wine, and pea tendrils and stir just until wilted, about 1 minute. Drizzle with sesame oil.  Place 1 salmon fillet on each plate. Spoon warm pea mixture over salmon fillets and serve.
