O DOCTOR, DOCtor! Check out “The IN Doctor,” in our monthly style section starting on page 11 where our Senior Shopping & Style Daveon Williams answers all of your style questions. E-mail us at jayemag@gmail.com to have your question answered by our resident style authority.
ne thing I think we can all agree on is that there are just not enough hours in the day. Between lectures, looming midterm exams, part- or full-time jobs, weekly meetings, and relationships that are always in constant need of attention, it seems as though a full day’s tasks are impossible to complete. That’s why I’m delighted that Jillian Risnes, our features editor, composed a guide to help solve all of your time management quandaries (page 40). With a little restructuring of your priorities, some organizing and use of our suggestions, we think you’ll be able to handle it all — without losing your mind or productivity. E-mail me at jayemagmike@gmail.com and let me know if our recommendations relieved some of your time management troubles — and in the spirit of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, be sure to set aside a couple of minutes to educate yourself on this devastating disease (get a head start on page 90), and as always, have a ball reading the issue!

She may not be an official style icon, but Alicia Keys recognizes the beauty of fashion and style — and it’s not just her outward appearance that makes her so stunning. Although she spends most of her time behind the piano during her performances, her unique style is not only reflected in her music but through her impeccable knowledge of fashion. She has made her mark in the minds and hearts of her fans, and will always be known as an exception to the rule.

The IN Doctor Style got you under the weather? Don't stress! JAYE Senior Shopping & Style Editor Daveon Williams, our resident style physician has a cure.
“Determine what your best features are, and choose pieces that will accentuate those features and highlight what you love the most!”
>> Well, my aspiring JAYE lady, The key to creating your personal style is to understand what pieces in a particular season work best for you. I encourage you to do some research on designers that you freqently see your favorite celebrities in, observe some other looks in the designer's colletion to see what you want to achieve, and then take that look and place yourself into it. Be original, and be confident. The looks you see on the stars may not work for you, but you can always play with it and make it your own. Do not be afraid to play around with colors (As Solonge Knowles did with her hot pink belt and sunny yellow t-strap sandals) and patterns, but don’t get too carried away — stick to one or two bright colors. Remember that when developing your personal style, determine what your best features are, and choose pieces that will accentuate those features and highlight what you love the most!
SOLANGE AND TINA KNOWLES: DAYLIFE.COM
>> Dear IN Doctor, I have the tendency to obsess over the pictures of celebrities in hopes to one day look as fashionable as them. They each seem to have their own unique personal style. My question is how can I achieve a look of my own?
Solange Knowles, with her mother Tina, at the VH1 Summer Of Soul concert to benefit VH1 Save The Music at EMM Group's THE Estate on July 18, 2008 in Bridgehampton, New York. Solange isn't afraid to push the envelope with her personal style and combine pieces and trends for create unique looks that show off her adoration for fashion and keen eye for what's trendy. >> E-mail your style questions to "The IN Doctor" at jayemag@gmail.com.

JAYE STYLE Abigail Lorick during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Fall 2008
GOSSIP ABOUT THIS Lorick’s designs are constantly worn by Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf. Her pieces are also used by Waldorf’s mother, Elanor, who is a famous fashion designer on the show.
Above: Blair Waldorf wears two Lorick frocks on set of Gossip Girl. Lorick’s designs are very classic, but she manages to still infuse just the right amount of femininity for girly-girls like “Queen B” Waldorf
DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT This on-the-rise designer is quickly proving she has the know-how to hang with the big guns — and the staying power to survive in the competitive fashion industry Left: Designs from Lorick’s fall 2008 collection. Lorick designs for the woman who wants to look “effortlessly put together” and she strives to create pieces that have a “classic look and are for the “modern lady.” Frocks in different shapes constructed of different fabrics are staples of the collection.
Although she is relatively new to the scene, Abigail Lorick doesn’t lack the skills to design a collection that can compete with the veterans. Born on Amelia Island in Florida, Lorick moved to Paris and Milan at age 18 to model for designers Alberta Ferretti and Mossimo. Working as a model ignited her love for fashion — so much that she moved to New York City to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology, working at T.S. Dixin while she received her education. She made a positive impression on the fashion house, landing her a position as a designer for Dixin’s entire collection. After a couple of seasons, Verma Singh, Lorick’s production manager in India proposed the impossible— to design a collection of her own. Soon thereafter, in the spring of 2007, the Lorick brand was born. Lorick’s fall 2008 line is nothing less than fabulous. For more, visit loricknewyork.com. By Christina Payne

ONE CLICK AWAY >> Fall’s here, and the malls are packed. But that doesn’t mean you can’t pick up those awesome autumn must-haves you’ve been craving. In this month’s installment of NPNG, Fashion Director Christina Payne tackles the topic of online shopping, how it can save you time — and keep you from pulling your hair out in the stores
THIS PAGE: YOURCREDITADVISOR.COM, FAR RIGHT: RAYCOSOFT.COM
NO PAYNE, NO GAIN
T Top reasons people shop online According to a survey by Nielsen Online published on associatedcontent.com: >> 81 percent shop online because they can shop during anytime of the day >> Seventy-seven said they enjoy the time it saves >> 61 percent said they like to comparison shop >> 56 percent said they like it because they can find things easily >> Nearly 44 percent enjoy it because they don’t have to fight the crowds
What to do if an online transaction goes wrong... >> Try and negotiate with the retailer by letter or e-mail and remember to keep copies of your order and invoices. Fair Trading laws apply to business transactions conducted in the United States. >> There is similar legislation in overseas countries. If the retailer you are dealing with is overseas and you can’t resolve your complaint, then you may need to contact the relevant consumer affairs authority in the country where the business is located. >> A good starting point is eConsumer.gov. This Web site has contact information for some overseas consumer agencies, and even an online complaint form that you can fill out. Source: shopping-online-guide.com
he ‘20s marked the era of change in the world of fashion. From shorter skirts to the birth of the bra, fashion saw progression and reform. As technology advanced, trends developed, while couture constantly evolved and became more modern every season. Clothing became more affordable and more accessible. Now, in the 21st century, technology has made shopping more comfortable and lucrative than ever before, thus online shopping has been on the rise. From Target to Prada, the Internet has made shopping for clothing fun and more accessible. Shipping methods, stock options and size charts make finding the right garment or outfit more personal — plus you can achieve it from the comfort of your own home. Shopping online is often more preferred than the hassle of shopping in-store. Since the weekend is the busiest time to shop, it can sometimes be difficult finding the right size or getting the desired customer service (although retailers have recently made the effort to provide better service, especially during high-traffic sale time.) eBay has become one of the top online shopping Web sites worldwide. You can sell or purchase almost anything your heart desires, new or used, and often times at astounding prices. Some of my favorite online retailers include forever21.com, topshop.com, pinkmiscara.com, yoox. com, net-a-porter.com, nordstrom. com, stevemadden.com, piperlime. com, asos.com. Visit forever21.com, topshop. com, stevemadden.com and piperlime.com for clothes and shoes on a budget. Forever 21’s online store is more preferred than the actual store
Because so many stores offer aparrel, accessories and other goods online, it’s now easier than ever to become a frequent cyber-shopper.
because it is often one of the busiest and largest retailers. These sites have great sales and frequent promotions. I love to go to sites like pinkmascara.com, yoox.com, net-aporter.com and nordstrom.com when I feel the urge to splurge.
“From Target to Prada, the Internet has made shopping for clothing fun and more accessible.” You may want to shop in-store for items that you usually have trouble finding the right size. Denim is an item that you may want to go in-store to shop for unless you are willing to visit a tailor. Certain materials are difficult to find the best fit even with size charts. If you are patient, online shopping will soon become your preferred shopping method. It takes time to find online retailers that suit you and can be most convenient especially if you are a seasonal shopper. Who knows, sooner rather than later, online shopping may put in-store retailers out of business! ■

On July 31, vivacious fashion designer Betsey Johnson celebrated 30 years in the industry true-to-form: Tons of pink, cotton candy and strawberry shortcake in the company of friends. Johnson, who famously performs a cartwheel at the concusion of each of her runway shows, and her business partner Chantal Bacon tells fashionweekdaily.com, “We never thought of this! Steve & Barry’s, famous for their assortment of college apparel and celebrity clothing lines, may be no more. According to the Associated Press, the retailer, which operates 276 stores in 39 states, is considering selling all or some of it’s assets to pay an outstanding debt. The company is reportedly deficient in paying back a $200 million credit loan from General Electric Commercial-lending unit. The Wall Street Journal reported that Steve & Barry’s may close approximately 100 of its stores as a prelude to the liquidation of the entire chain. In 2006, Steve & Barry’s introduced basketball player Stephon Marbury’s Starbury collection, a 50-piece line of clothing, apparel and sneakrs. The next year, the company welcomed BITTEN, actress Sarah Jessica Parker’s line of hundreds of clothing and accessories priced under $20. Other celebrity partnerships include: Tennis star Venus Williams, actress Amanda Bynes and surfer Laird Hamilton.

Beyonce Knowles and her mother, Tina, have reportedly teamed up to design a jewelry line. According to published reports, Dereon, the junior sportswear brand founded by the Knowles, has inked a deal with Carolee Jewelry to create a fashion jewelry collection for the label. The line is expected to hit stores in spring. At press time, Carolee and Dereon could not be reached for comment. House of Dereon was introduced in 2004, and Beyonce and Solange, her younger sister, launched Dereon, which is geared towards younger consumers and is more reasonably priced, in 2006. This line includes more casualwear, such as sweatpants and embroidered hooded sweatshirts. The pieces are known for their hiphop influences, such as its use of denim, paired with ultrafeminine flourishes like embroidery and ruffles. For more information, visit houseofdereon.com.
Celebs like Vanessa Hudgens have joined the sandals-tucked-into-skinny-jeans movement. It’s customary to see boots tucked into skinnies when the mercury drops, but we don’t know about this one. Give us your opinion at jayemag.com and help us decide if you love it or hate it. This is more like it! Actress Katherine Heigl tucks her coffee brown suede boots into her skinny jeans tops the look off with a plaid coat. Take cues from Heigl and wear this chic get-up for class, a night out with the girls, or on a date. Start with a detangling shampoo, so the hair won’t weigh down and will replenish the natural moisture. For body create large loops; for end curls make curls tighter.
Curl the waves in alternate direction to prevent locks from waving into each other. Start with clean damp hair roll outward to remove the rollers after drying and use a wide comb for generous waves.
Be aware that newly washed hair can be soft and difficult to work with. For shampooed hair, use leavein conditioner or other products that will prevent hair from being too slippery.

Time Management Midterms are looming, your planner is flooded with weekly meetings and you have to be at work in a half-hour — oh, and your girlfriend just texted you about the party tonight. After, decide which of these are the most important, and determine the amount of time you want to spend on each. Charles Buxton, English writer and philanthropist, wisely said, “You will never find time for anything. If you want time you must make it.” Find ways to improve your time management skills. It may be shocking how easy it is to do those things you need to do, and even have some spare time to relax when you make a plan for your time. And be true to yourself: Know how you retain things and use those methods. If you keep your BlackBerry glued to you, put important reminders in it.
Remember Your Priorities & Goals
Once you have put your priorities in order, it is just as important to continuously remind yourself of them on a daily basis. With college comes a vast array of opportunities, choices and pressure. If you have a good understanding of your priorities it will be much easier to make decisions on whether to join a new organization, take on a second minor, or attend tonight’s secretaries & CEOs party. Don’t forget though, simply having your priorities in order at the present time may not be enough. Often, college students are so busy living in the moment that the primary reason for enrolling in college is forgotten — be sure to stay focused. Start accomplishing goals immediately; don’t put them off until the last year or two.

Freshman and sophomores — whether you’re an athlete, a member of an on-campus organization, pledging a sorority or one of the countless other opportunities available to college students — take advantage of the organization’s more seasoned members. Identify those members who seem to do well at juggling several different extracurricular activities and/or work but still manage to do well academically. Ask them for tips on how to better manage the time you have. For juniors, seniors, and beyond, make a point to take one of these younger students under your wing. Build a relationship with them and teach them what you have learned in the last few years. You have no idea how much that little bit can really help.
Go To Class & Ask For Help
Every student encounters similar issues. A common mistake is to skipping class. It seems easy— harmless to skip a single class to sleep in, play “flip-cup” at that cute guy’s house, or watch the NCAA football games. Though the first time may be innocuous, it’s hardly an easy task to stop after the first skipped class — it inevitably leads to more in the future. Simply put: go to class no matter how boring or monotonous it may be. Instructors recognize attendance, and it is really surprising how this can help as they decide whether you deserve an A or an A-. Time management guru Dr. Donald E. Wetmore has delivered over 2000 presentations around the world lecturing on how to use our time efficiently. Over 20 years, Dr. Wetmore has compiled some interesting facts: ■ The average person gets one interruption every eight minutes, or approximately seven an hour, or 50-60 per day. ■ 80% of those interruptions are typically rated as “little value” or “no value” creating approximately three hours of wasted time per day. ■ In the last 20 years, working time has increased by 15% and leisure time has decreased by 33%. ■ The average reading speed is approximately 200 words per minute. The average working person reads two hours per day. A Speed Reading course that will improve the reading rate to 400 words per minute will save an hour per day. ■ It takes approximately 30 days to establish a new physical or emotional habit. ■ The average American watches 28 hours of television per week. ■ Angry people are twice as likely to suffer a heart attack as a person in better control of their emotions. ■ 75% of heart attacks occur between the hours of 5:00 a.m.8:00 a.m., local time. ■ More heart attacks occur on Monday than on any other day of the week. ■ 95% of the things we fear will occur, do not occur. ■ One hour of planning will save 10 hours of doing. Triple 8! On the eighth day of the eighth month of the eighth year of the millennium, China welcomed the world to the 29th Olympiad with an epic opening ceremony that launched perhaps the most anticipated and assuredly the most spell-bounding Games in modern Olympic history. The opening ceremony took place in China’s new national stadium, otherwise known as the Bird’s Nest. The beautifully designed building showcased over 15,000 performers, such as British singer Sarah Brightman who sung a duet with China’s Liu Huan. The song was written in commission to the theme of the Olympic Games. The show depicted almost 5,000 years of Chinese history. Project Runway, Bravo’s hit television series, also participated in the Olympics’ opening ceremony by showcasing one of the designer’s very own breathtaking pieces, proudfully worn by the United States athletes during the athlete walk.

BIDEN HIS TIME ■ While many were in deep slumber, Barack Obama announced — via text message — his selection of Joe Biden as the 2008 Democratic vice-presidential nomination. Biden, a six-term United States senator from Delaware, is considered a smart choice by Obama because of his foreign policy know-how and ability to appeal to swing states like Pennsylvania, and swing voters, including rural blue-collar White Americans. In an article on Boston.com, “In Biden, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has chosen a running mate with strengths in areas where Obama is perceived to have deficits. Biden’s experience and his deep knowledge of foreign policy and the ways of Washington head the list. Moreover, as an Irish-Catholic, lunch-bucket Democrat, Biden may also help Obama appeal to a bloc of white, blue-collar voters who resisted him during the nomination fight.”
>> According to an Obama campaign spokesperson, Biden received word that he had been selected as the Illinois senator’s running mate on Thursday, August 21. The official announcement wasn’t made until the following Saturday. >> For his entire career in Washington, Biden has made a daily 80-minute commute on Amtrak from Delaware. >> As the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Biden’s top foreign policy priority is bringing home American troops without leaving chaos behind in Iraq. Senator Biden and Les Gelb, President Emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, have offered a five-point plan that offers a political solution to ending the war - a plan overwhelming endorsed by his Senate colleagues by a 75-23 vote. ■ The Amityville Horror On Nov. 13, 1974, six members of an Amityville, New York, family were killed by one of the family’s sons, Ronald Jr. (“Butch”) DeFeo. In his legal defense, DeFeo claimed that demonic forces in the home drove him to kill. The new owner of the home at 112 Ocean Avenue later claimed a variety of ghostly phenomena, and the story was further fictionalized into a best-selling novel and horror film. Yet the supernatural events were never proven, and DeFeo’s lawyer later admitted that the story was a hoax. By the way, if you have not done so and you like a good horror film, check this movie out at your local video store! ■ ALCATRAZ The San Francisco Bay’s resident rock, and perhaps the most famous prison island in the world, Alcatraz has captured the public’s imagination in many films and books. The prison, a cold, dank hellhole, saw many murders, riots, and suicides during its 29 years of service. Along the way it spawned tales of inexplicable sounds, cell doors closing on their own, disembodied screams, and scary apparitions. Today, the island is a historic site operated by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to tours. Visitors can reach the island by ferry ride from Pier 33, near Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. ■ THE FOX SISTERS COTTAGE The Fox Sisters cottage is perhaps the most important haunted house of all, since the phenomena in many ways even launched a religion called Spiritualism. In 1848 Hydesville, western New York, two young sisters Maggie and Katie Fox began supposedly communicating with the ghost of a murdered peddler. The sisters would ask questions of the spirit, who would answer back with mysterious knocks or raps. Many people, including their mother, were amazed at what seemed to be genuine contact with the dead. Both sisters eventually admitted that they had actually faked the sounds — there had been no murdered peddler, it had all been a prank. ■ THE WHITE HOUSE The iconic Washington, D.C. home and heartbeat of America’s past, present and future presidents has surely seen untold tragedy through the centuries, from being burned down in 1814 by British troops to several attempted (and accomplished) assassinations. Among the White House’s spooky stories include the appearance of Abraham Lincoln’s ghost. Lincoln’s widow, Mary Todd, dabbled in the occult and held seances in the White House. Other reputed ghosts include Andrew Jackson, Dolley Madison, and Abigail Adams, though they are rarely seen today. Well, I hope the next president knows how to fight off evil spirits!

■ The Winchester Mystery House In 1881, Sarah Winchester, the widow of famous gun maker Oliver Winchester, became convinced that she needed protection from the evil spirits of all the people killed by Winchester rifles. A psychic advised her to continually add rooms to her San Jose, California, mansion to confuse any ghosts that may try to find her. She did so for nearly forty years, adding more than 100 rooms and staircases, until her death in 1922. After Sarah’s death, her own ghost was said to haunt the halls of her mazelike mansion. Today the building remains a popular tourist attraction, a bizarre monument to superstition and paranoia.

JAYE THE REAL DEAL
WONDER WOMEN For far too long, single mothers have been viewed as government-funding mongerers who lazily lounge around waiting for their monthly welfare check. Contrarily, today’s generation of women are standing tall in the face of adversity — absentee fathers, limited financial aid and challenging coursework — and breaking those dated stereotypes, earning their degrees and raising their children. JAYE celebrates two women who didn’t let their parental responsibilites stand in the way of attaining academic victory and sheds light on why there aren’t more stories like the ones you’re about to read.

Single mothers in college wear many hats to provide sufficient care for their children and earn satisfactory grades in school
THE
story of a determined mother is timeless—just go ask mom or grandma to share a few stories of how grueling the work that was demanded of her to make ends meet was—but in the past decade, universities across the nation have seen an increased number of single mothers tenaciously chasing— and obtaining—their degrees. ¶ According to the 2006 American Community Survey by the US Census Bureau, there are over 14.7 million single mothers in the United States. Of them, 1.3 million are under the age of 21. “It seems that the odds are stacked against us,” Keisha Addkins*, a 24-year-old mother who became pregnant when she was 20, observes. Addkins, who was in a five-year master’s degree program, became pregnant with her daughter just two semesters short of graduation. “Even though she [her three-year-old daughter] was not planned, I never had had doubts of keeping her. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to be a mom; but I knew I wanted to keep her.” With a year left in the program, Addkins moved back home, commuted to school while taking online classes. Three months after giving birth to her daughter, Addkins graduated with her MBA. “I knew I couldn’t stop. I had my family, and my sorority sisters to help me. They got me through. It was more than myself. I had my family, my daughter to do it for.” y story is simple: In high school, I fell in love,” explains Simone Saunders*. “He was my first kiss, my first love, my first everything.” Sitting at her home, Saunders seemingly embodies the suburban wife: She’s 25, with an enchanting home, a loving husband, and seven-year-old son — but she’s the first to declare it’s been a long time coming. “I remember people in high school asking

me what I would do now [that I was pregnant]. I always knew college was my next step — baby or not,” Saunders, who was raised by her paternal grandmother, recalls, ruminating on her teenage years, specifically age 17, when she became pregnant with her oldest child. During the brisk winter of December in 2000, Saunders gave birth to her son, and in June of the

ter in school without her son would be only one she didn’t have her son with her. Saunders was convinced that her son would be her responsibility. After her first semester in college, she brought her son to live with her at her university.
“I worked, saved all of my money, got an apartment and daycare lined up for him—I knew it could be done; I just had to be ready, I had to take being his mom serious.” “Soon after Justice was born, his father was no help, but nothing was going to stop my education. When I left for school, he remained with my family, but I knew I wanted to raise my son.” Saunders said that she soon realized that the first semes-

lege degree. Many times boyfriends, parents or other helpful support are hundreds of miles away. “There were times I couldn’t go on. If it wasn’t for my friends and my [sorority] sisters, I am not sure what I would have done,” Addkins admits. Like many college students, staying focused on graduation is a laborious task. Collegiate single mothers have the compounded responsibility of raising a child — a responsibility that can strengthen or weaken a woman. Currently, 38 percent of single parent households headed by women live at or below the poverty level, with $27,575 as the median income level. Single parent homes that have a college degree, show to

Obviously, more resources need to be allocated to single mothers — it takes two parties to make a baby, and when the mother is left alone to raise the child, it suffers — and it shouldn’t have to. Many hurdles lay in the paths of single collegiate mothers with finances being the largest obstacle. According to the American Community Study, only 4.6 percent of single collegiate mothers will finish college. While scholarships, loans, grants, and financial aid will assist in paying for college, typically the cost for most early childcare is greater than the average cost of a four-year university. There aren’t enough stories like Addkins and Saunders — statistics show lack of local support, also proves to be a stronghold against completing a col-

The long-term effects of having a college degree aren’t limited to higher chances of obtaining financial stability, but they also affect the value and continual education for the children of single parent homes. Children who come from a single parent home with a college degree, are three times more likely to go on to college themselves. “Neither my mom or my dad went to college, but they made it a priority in my life — a priority I will determined to pass to my son,” Saunders asserts. Though the stacks are against single mothers juggling parental responsibilities and academic demands, there’s hope according to Saunders, “It’s hard, not impossible.”Addkins adds, “Stay focused, stay strong, and remain confident that you can do it—and you will!” ■ *=Names have been changed. >> Sound off! >> Beauty Buy of the Month: Prescriptives Cosmetics ■ For many women, it’s almost impossible to find a foundation that matches their complexion because of variations in skin tones. Many makeup artists suggest that women with brown skin purchase two foundations and apply them to different parts of their faces or blend the two foundations together and create their shade. This can be quite difficult for the everyday women to blend their own makeup and produce the correct shade. Prescriptives cosmetics offers custom blended foundation, concealer, powder, lipstick, lip gloss, bronzer and tinted moisturizer. A professional Prescriptives blender can test your skin and identify your skin’s undertones and custom blend your individual color. They will create a color exact foundation, an eye palette, cheek, and lip colors custom designed for you. JAYE BEAUTY ■ External beauty fades but internal beauty develops with time. The new age woman does not define her beauty solely in terms of her outward appearance. She realizes that intelligence, confidence, and self-respect also makes her beautiful. What makes you a JAYE Lady? How do you define what makes you beautiful?
I’m a JAYE Lady Because... Krystle Glass, a 21-year-old senior at the University of South Florida defines her beauty in terms of self-confidence. Glass, who majors in public relations, says, “I believe it’s my confidence that makes me beautiful. No matter what I’m wearing or what I’m not wearing, if I feel good about myself at that moment it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about me. My confidence comes from the pride I take in myself and my body and the positive energy I receive from family, friends and the people around me that genuinely love me.” As told to Ariel Burke >> Why are you a JAYE Lady? BREAST CANCER STATISTICS
>> Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. >> One out of eight American women who live to be 85 years of age will develop breast cancer, a risk that was one out of 14 in 1960. >> 2.4 million women living in the U.S. have been diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer. >> The risk of developing breast cancer increases for women whose parent, sibling or child have had the disease. >> Women who begin menstruating before age 12 are at increased risk of developing breast cancer. >> The more menstrual cycles a woman has during her lifetime, the more her risk increases. Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2008, American Cancer Society.
the 411 on breast cancer ■ According to the National Cancer Institute, breast cancer is defined as, “cancer that forms in tissues of the breast, usually the ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple) and lobules (glands that make milk). It occurs in both men and women, although male breast cancer is rare.” In 2008, 182,460 women have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,480 women have died from breast cancer. In a study done by the American Cancer Society on networkofstrength. org, excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among U.S. women, accounting for more than one in four cancers. ■ Doctors assert that the earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the higher the chances of beating it are. According to breastcancer. org, mammograms are probably the most important tool doctors have to help them diagnose, evaluate, and follow women who’ve had breast cancer. A mammogram, a technique that has been used for more than 30 years, is a safe and highly accurate X-ray photograph of the breast. Mammograms don’t prevent breast cancer, but they can save lives by finding breast cancer as early as possible. Finding breast cancers early with mammography has also meant that many more women being treated for breast cancer are able to keep their breasts. When caught early, localized cancers can be removed without resorting to breast removal (mastectomy). For more information, visit breastcancer.org.
JAYE ADVICE
In college, problems are countless; funds are few — and sometimes we all could use a little expert advice … without the fee that comes with said advice. Luckily, Sasha B., JAYE resident (and anonymous!) shrink is on the scene to answer all of your inquiries
Dear Sasha B, There is a guy that I am attracted to. He’s handsome, smart, has great conversation — and he’s in a relationship. Now, before you jump down my back about wanting a guy already in a relationship, he and his “girl” are currently broken up. While they break up and make up quite often, I want to take a chance during this break-up and show him that I am the girl he should be with. We spend time on the phone, and he sends me text messages about seeing me, being around me, but none of these advances have come true, and it’s already been two months. I just know we would be great together; I just need him to give us a try so he can see it too. I guess my question is: how do I break the bond they have, so I can have him for myself?

REAL TALK with SASHA B.
Awaiting a Reply, Stuck in the Middle Dear Stuck, Let me be the first to say: You are being played. In my opinion, there are so many things wrong with the situation and I don’t know where to begin. Let him go — better yet, let the thought of you two go. Have you ever thought he will be emotionally unavailable to you? Or that
you will be a rebound chick — not a woman he can build something substantial with? Or even worse, that while he is holding, kissing, or screwing you, he will be thinking about her? I guess at the end of the day, do you, without focusing on being “You Two”. If it is mean to be, then it will be. Let this take a natural course; without poking and prodding a relationship to be something that it should not be. Don’t play second-fiddle; he’s not worth it. Always, Sasha B

I
n the last week or so, I’ll admit, I have been complaining more than ever before: My nose is stuffy, my throat hurts, I have a sinus headache, my boss doesn’t appreciate me enough, I don’t have enough spare time — the list goes on and on. The question behind this is why? I mean, has God not given me enough money to buy Kleenex when my nose is stuffy? Do I not live in a country where I can find a decent doctor without a six-month
wait if I should need one? Has God not blessed me with a job where I can be creative, have fun writing and win awards while doing it? I haven’t come to any conclusions while writing this — wait, yes I have. I’m a spoiled American who like many others doesn’t appreciate what they have. Why not give thanks for what we have instead of wanting more? Recently, a friend wrote that she — even after she got out of debt — would continue to live on $25 a week and give the rest of the
money to someone who really needed it. What if we all followed my friend’s lead? What if instead of spending our money or maxing our credit cards out for the latest iPhone, we gave it to a person, or an organization that really needed it? Now you can disagree with me on this but the results would be magnificient. The world would be a better place because we wouldn’t always be concerned about ourselves. Try giving back to others: Trust me, there’s no price tag on the amount of joy you’ll receive.

michelle wilkerson
WHY SHE’S OUR JAYE LADY: This 22-year-old University of Texas health and fitness major has a stupefying personal style. But it’s her wisdom, some would say advanced for someone her age, that has sets her apart from the rest. STYLE DIVERSIFICATION: Brand Loyalty? Not with this JAYE Lady. “I don’t have a favorite designer. Whatever I find cute and polished, I will rock it whether it comes from a vintage or thrift store to Forever 21. If it’s fly and I can afford it, I will sport it.” EXPRESS YOURSELF: Wilkerson believes style is an avenue of personal expression. “I define my style with three Cs: cute, classy and comfortable. My style is chic and clean. However I’m feeling, I try to express that with my personal style. SHE’S BOSSY: When asked if she was a pair of jeans, which should she be, Wilkerson gleefully replies, “Without a doubt, I would be the Miss Sixty high-waist jean that Kelis flaunted in her “I’m Bossy” video. I would spend all of my money on those jeans!” LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE: I want to initially work as a health and wellness coordinator for a corporate fitness facility. Eventually, I want to start my own business, providing services that will establish wellness programs for small- and medium- sized businesses.” WORDS OF WISDOM: “Never become complacent with anything and continue to challenge yourself. Seek to use your God-given talents for good, never forget where you came from, and live life to the fullest.” STYLE INSPIRATION: Wilkerson has a diverse mix of style muses which include: “Kelis, Mary J. Blige, Sarah Jessica Parker on Sex and the City, and the undiscovered diva hanging out in the mall, at work, or hanging out with some friends.” – Christina Payne >> Want to be a JAYE Lady?
