Fo rewa rd Brother John White, was appointed as director of SLA in January 2010, Brother White shares on many occasions that, “The Academy is about inspiring and developing leaders”. I am committed to help build an organizational culture that develops great leaders today and instills the mechanisms and the mindset that will continue to foster great leadership tomorrow. We have the awesome responsibility to hardwire Sigma for developing great leaders,” John E. White Since its inception in 2007, the academy has been focusing on the importance of leadership development within the fraternity. The Academy previous was led by Dr. Bennie Harris. “Special thanks to Brother Bennie Harris for his leadership, I understand what big shoes I am called to fill and I appreciate his support throughout this transition,” said White. As introduced and approved by the General Board Meeting held in January 2008 the four strategic pillars of success and area of focus are Sigma Leadership Development, Professional and Career Development, Organization and Civic Engagement, and Student Leadership Development. Sigma Leadership and Professional Career Development were introduced as the Academy priorities in 2010 and the plan to offer many opportunities such as organization effectiveness, leadership forum, and professional development learning labs, webinars, Sigma Spirit of Mentoring and establishing professional affinity and network groups within Sigma. Included in this document are the Sigma Leadership Academy 2010 -2012 Learning Opportunities consisting of workshops, learning labs, forums and seminars for your review. These learning opportunities are listed by categories: Effective Communication, Leadership, Personal Development, Organization Effectiveness, Diversity and Fraternity Branding.

Sigma Leadership Academy’s Mission

The Sigma Leadership Academy will provide experiences and perspectives that give its members and interested individuals opportunities to develop and enhance personal and professional leadership skills. These skills will encourage individuals to assume formal and informal leadership roles which impacts and improves the quality of daily life in all our communities.

The Academy’s Vision

The Sigma Leadership Academy will become a premier leadership academy of choice providing leadership training and development that equips individuals to think and engage in critical dialogue and act to improve the lives of individuals and communities.

Micro Inequities - SLA SIGNATURE LEARNING LAB

• The Little things: When dealing with people, the statement is true… “it’s definitely the little things”. You can’t explain it, you can’t quit put your finger on it… but you know it happened! This unique Sigma Leadership Academy program is designed to promote understanding and awareness of the effects of body language, spoken language, and cultural mores on our daily lives. Based on research done at MIT and further developed by Steven Young, MicroInequities — negative micromessages — can be further explained as small, subtle messages, frequently unconscious, that devalue, discourage, and ultimately impair performance. These messages can take the shape of looks, gestures, or tones, nuance, inflection, inference and even the absence of a message can often be a message itself.

*Navigating Crucial Conversations - SLA SIGNATURE LEARNING LAB

• Learning how to create and communicate in an atmosphere where you and others feel safe giving and receiving constructive feedback is important skill for leaders today. During this learning lab we will introduce ways to navigate potentially damaging curial conversations and scenarios. We will learn how written and unwritten rules in the workplace impacts career growth. We will introduce ways to seal allies and solutions that enable you to remove potential restraints that impede the growth of our Fraternity

Speak, Present and Communicate with Poise, Power and Persuasion SLA SIGNATURE LEARNING LAB

• Today, presentations and public speaking are very much a part of every leader’s responsibilities. Effective executive speaking is what distinguishes the successful professional from everyone else. Public speaking skills are most critical to your success-and to your individual and Fraternity image. Learn to use powerful tools and techniques to turn every presentation or public speaking opportunity into a rewarding experience

Organization Effectiveness Understanding Fiduciary Responsibilities of Non-Profit Organizations

• Through the passion and drive of our Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer, during this session, we will cover basic board governance and fiduciary responsibilities; management of financial resources; federal compliance for non-profit/tax exempt entities

Crafting and Communicating a Shared Vision – Taking Your Chapter From Good to Great - SLA SIGNATURE LEARNING LAB

• It is critical that Phi Beta Sigma focus on communicating a shared vision that results in effective chapter operations and chapter evaluation. It is also important that our chapter leaders understand the expectations of chapter reporting and the chapter recognition process. During this workshop, we will review and confirm those expectations of complying with Fraternity standards and ensuring our chapter leaders are communicating that shared vision of Changing Lives through Service via proper measurement and assessment in an effort to develop a great chapter.

Developing Our Alumni Chapters to Become Change Makers in Our Communities

• In this workshop we will make the business case why our alumni chapters are vital to our communities in which we live. We will discover ways and develop plans to being an impact alumni chapter in your community. We will discuss creative strategies for continued engagement with government and civic leaders, university officials, corporate and community leaders.

Creating A Passion to Serve through the Fraternity’s Shared Vision

• Passion to serve -- does the topic get your attention? We’re talking about leaders creating passion through our shared vision-- as in a boundless, extremely fervent fondness and commitment -- for Phi Beta Sigma. In fact, in every organization, one of the major roles of the leader is be a passion maker, or someone who is responsible for developing and inspiring enthusiasm within the entire body.

Understanding Fraternity Standards and Procedures

• In this learning lab we will discuss the role chapters play in the fraternity’s overall structure and design. We will review the Chapter officer and member accountabilities in the chapter management process as well as learn the importance of effective management practices and operations at the chapter level. We will review the Fraternity’s Manual of Standard Procedures and other Fraternity documents to clarify the procedures that enable the membership to execute the regulations contained in the Constitution and Bylaws.

Effective Chapter Fund Raising

• We will discover key strategies in successful fundraising for supporting our mission. We will explore grant opportunities to fund your chapter’s impact programs.

Leadership Understanding Your Psychological Type to Make Impact

• Psychological type is a theory of personality developed by Swiss psychiatrist Carl G. Jung to explain the normal difference between healthy people. Based on his observations, Jung concluded that differences in behavior result from people’s inborn tendencies to use their minds in different ways. As people act on theses tendencies, they develop patterns of behavior. During this session will explore your psychological type along with your peers and discover ways how we can work together more effectively for impact in our chapters and communities.

Setting Personal and Professional Plans and Goals for Leadership Success - SLA SIGNATURE LEARNING LAB

• Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn this vision of the future into reality. It is a process that helps you choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate your efforts. You’ll also quickly spot the distractions that would otherwise lure you from your course. This workshop will help you properly-set clearly defined and measurable goals that will provide focus, organize your time and resources. You’ll break your goals into small and large goals and into 1 year, 3 years, 5 years and 10 years. We’ll start the process with you identifying your Lifetime Goals, and work down to the things you can do today to start moving towards them. This is a workshop for all brothers, whether you’re 18, 28, 38 or 58. Come prepared to learn, work and engage.

Increasing Your Circle of Influence

• Ever heard the saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”? This workshop will help us gain and leverage both personal and professional relationships to position you for success.

Resolving Team Conflict

• Making the Business Case for Resolving Conflict: What’s really at stake and how you can win! When you are faced with conflict do you only think about it in terms of how it impacts you personally? Do you see it as a one-on-one battle with the other person and try to prove your point? Have you ever thought about the professional consequences if you do not handle it properly? The ability to resolve conflict is a must have skill for any successful professional. Those who are successful at resolving conflict understand that the outcomes can have a lasting effect on business goals and relationships. In this session you will recognize the business case for resolving conflict and strategies you can use to be successful at resolving.

Dealing with Emotional Behavior

• Have you ever had to deal with a volatile situation? One where you could feel the tension? This module will explore different types of emotional behavior and presents techniques participants can use to defuse non-constructive behavior and focus energies on positive solutions. S I G M A

• The way you communicate in difficult or challenging situations can lead to success or failure. Getting your idea across explores skills leaders can use to explain tough decisions and complicated or unpopular policies or changes.

*Developing Executive Leaders – Emerging Leadership Forum Lab

• When the stock market is making you wonder about your organization’s future every day of every work week, it’s vital to be well-equipped to optimize your organization’s performance-as well as your own career-with executive leadership training. To exhibit real executive leadership, you must be a visionary, a trailblazer, a strategist, a communicator, a coach, a diplomat and a politician. The world’s most successful leaders are able to focus on the big picture and uphold high standards while wearing many hats. This intensive Sigma Emerging Leaders Forum Seminar combines proven-in-action techniques with peer interaction and insights from the latest research to help you master the competencies of effective executive.

Sigma Emerging Leaders Forum

• Sigma Emerging Leaders Forum is an annual forum for all current and aspiring chapter presidents, state, regional and international officers. The Forum is a year long process that include virtual events and one face to face forum. The program focuses on reducing leadership variances and standardizes leadership behavior. The first class of the Sigma Emerging Leaders Forum is scheduled to kick off at Conclave Atlanta.

Leadership Sigma

• Leadership Sigma consists of Sigma men nominated by distinguished Sigma brothers from across the country to participate in a year long program designed to be a transformative, civic and leadership experience. At the conclusion of the experience, members will prepare for long term leadership service. The first inaugural class is scheduled for the fall of 2013.

Building a Diverse and Inclusive Chapter and Teams LAB

• “Understanding and promoting Diversity is one of the most valuable and essential components to Leadership.” The Diversity Initiative within the Leadership Academy will establish and execute a comprehensive approach to leveraging the diverse facets of Phi Beta Sigma while exploring implications for local and international communities. Taking a progressive look at the Diversity Imperative and demonstrating relevance across industries and sectors is a constant guide to ensure academy alignment and developing leaders. Over time the content of the Diversity Initiative will continue to be fluid and substantive while always seeking to: 1) Explore Where We Are, 2) Define Where We Are Going, and 3) Create How We Get There. 8

Fraternity Branding and Marketing – A SLA SIGNATURE LEARNING LAB

Strengthening Our Sigma Brand through Fraternity Protocols, Standards and Rituals • The Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. brand is an important asset to our Fraternity. Consistency in branding and imagery builds brand equity, which in turn supports a strong foundation for organizational growth. Effective branding creates and supports instant recognition and value for each of our chapters and the fraternity at large. Brand equity provides us with a value base from which we can more effectively work together to achieve our goals as one recognized organization. This learning lab will help clarify the procedures that enable the membership to execute and promote consistent protocols and branding throughout the Fraternity. Warning, you may get excited and become a Fraternity Brand Ambassador.

Creating a Public Relations and Marketing Campaign for Chapters

• In this learning lab chapters will develop cutting edge strategies to enhance their chapter promotions and develop their chapter brand. We will learn proper usage of he Fraternity’s Brand Identity. You will focus on the Sigma Brand visibility in your community and discover tools to assist chapters in their style alignment with he global Fraternity This learning lab is a SLA Signature learning opportunities. Leadership Speaks Series The classic Vince Lombardi credo that “leaders are not born, they are made” resonates soundly in the SLA framework of leadership development. The SLA Leadership Speaks Series (LSS) exposes our members to men of Phi Beta Sigma who have distinguished themselves in the area of leadership from all professional backgrounds. This groundbreaking series will allow members to hear directly from the leadership experts and expose members to the multiple roads of leadership that lead to success. The Leadership Speaks Series begins the first quarter of the New Year.

The Sigma Leadership Journal The Leadership Journal (LJ) will be a virtual (online-only) quarterly publication of the SLA highlighting the accomplishments and achievements of member of the faculty/staff, students as well as brothers of the fraternity in a professional and academic capacity. The purpose of the publication is to showcase and reinforce the mission of Growing and inspiring leaders with proven stories of success and triumph. The LJ will not rival the official organ of Phi Beta Sigma, the Crescent Magazine, but compliment it.
