About the brief

For this brief, I am going to re-design the back of the current ceareal box for a company called ‘BEAR’. The current cereal boxes target a young age range, and they’re looking for a new design, the current boxes are great but they would like a new, creative, intergueing concept that will make kids love their cereal. I think this will be challanging as it’s year 2014 and not many people get enthusiastic about cereal boxes, however I’m always up for a challange For this task I can either re-design their concept or come up with a new one from scratch. I am going to totally redo the back of their box and come up with a new interesting concept.

2

Current BEAR BoxEs

These are some of the boxes that have already been created. As you can see they’re all creative and the graphics are amazing, it looks as if it would just catch a kids eye so easily. I really like how interesting they’re too, even when I started to read them, I was learning new things such as an electric eal contains enough electricity to light up 10 light bulbs. It’s definetly going to take a lot to create something that is just as good as these.

3

Primary Research

I have taken a look at some of the most recognised cereal boxes for some inspiration, I thought that these would contain some cool ideas, and maybe I could get some ideas from looking at these. Firstly, I looked at the ‘Kelloggs Frosted Flakes’ box and on the back of their box shows an advert, it is advertising baseball stickers that you get free in the cereal. It also says on the box ‘collect all 25’ which will make kids want to keep collecting the next cereal box, which I think is a smart idea. The second box I looked at was the ‘Nestle Golden Nuggets’ box, and the back of their box was a classic ‘Breakfast fun’ segment. The back of the box contains 5 different games such as match ‘em up, word up, spot the difference and so on. I don’t think this is the best of ideas for the type of world we live in, as games aren’t going to make kids want to buy another cereal box, I think they’d be more interested in collecting things or learning new things to build up the excitment. I also think the same applies for the ‘Kelloggs Coco Pops’ design as that one also contains a game on the back of the box, however it does contain a toy within the box which will make kids want to buy another box to get the new toy.

4

Secondary Research Here, I have been looking at other cereal boxes, where you can create cool, interesting things with the box. Firstly, I looked into making origami things with the cereal box, I was thinking you could maybe make a origami bear, or a bear face mask. I believe this would be a good idea because it will be entertaining for kids to do something fun. The second idea I looked at was for a box with holes all over the box, that make an image. I think it would be fun for the kids as you could turn it into a lamp shade so the light shines through the holes, it could also be dangerous due to health and safety elements.

Football, Tennis, Rugby, Baseball

Sport

Here, I have generated a brainstorm for all the different things I might include within my idea. I’ve looked at different theme related ideas such sports, superheros, education and so on. I think my favourite idea from these is the Countries one where the bear travells all over Europe.

6 Idea

So the idea I have come up with is about the bear from the front cover, which is called ‘Alphabite Bear’. I’m going to choose several different destinations from Europe, then I’m going to pick the main tourist attractions from certain areas such The Eiffel Tower being from France. I will then use the tourist attractions as a background for the back of the box. I’m then going to dress Alphabite Bear up so he looks like he’s from a specific country. The plot is then going to be about Alphabite Bear travelling to different countries in Europe, the kids will then be learning about geographical things as well, so it’s also going to be educational.

Box 1 Design

This is for my first box, I’ve decided to base this box on France. Firstly, I’m going to make the bear look French, I looked online to see what a typical French person looks like without stereotyping. So I’ve given the bear an artist hat, mustache, scarf, stripey top and a baguette in his hand.

8

Box 1 Development

This is going to be the background for my first box, I’ve decided to do the background as the Eiffel Tower as it’s the biggest and most recognisable trademark in France so kids should be able to identify the bears location. My next steps are going to be drawing over the pencil drawing in Adobe Illustrator, and then I am going to start adding colour.

9

Box 1 Final

This is my final design for my first cereal box, this is the French one. Now I’ve added colour I think it’s a lot more children friendly as I’ve tried to use quite bright, primary colours. I’ve also added some text at the top which says, ‘Alphabite bear is lost’ and then I’ve added a speach bubble to the bears mouth which says ‘Do you know where I am?’ I’ve chosen to do it like this so children can have fun guessing and educate themselves at the same time.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE I AM ?

10 Box 2 Design

This is the second box that I’ve designed, and I’ve decided to base this box on Italy. I also took a look online for some typical Italian assets, I thought a good symbolic way to make the bear look Italian would be to dress him up as a chef, with a big chef hat and a mustache. The reason I thought this would appropriate is because that’s what Italian men usually look like in children films, which should make it easier for the children to guess what location Alphabite Bear is in.

11 Box 2 Development

This is the background for my second cereal box. The landmark I’ve decided to use is ‘The Leaning Tower of Pisa’ as it’s one of the biggest tourist attractions in Italy, which should make it easier for the kids to guess the location. Next, I am going to add colour to the back ground and add text.

12 Box 2 Final

This is the final design for my second box, which is the Italian theme. I’ve tried to make the colours as vibrant as possible by using the bright green and blue for the backdrop, I think the grey building looked dull and boring which is why I made the background very bright so the colours would compliment each other. However, I think the children should easily be able to guess what location the bear is in, as the bear looks very Italian in my eyes.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE I AM ?

13 Box 3 Design

This is the Bear for my third and final design, the bear is also representing England. I couldn’t really think of a great stereotype for English people, so I did my research and I thought that the most symbolic persona to use would be a queens guard. The reason for this is because when I see a queens guard I instantly think of London which is in England.

14 Box 3 Development

Here is the drawn up version fo my background for my final box. The landmark I’ve chosen to use was the Big Ben, It was difficult for me to choose as there are numerous tourist attractions within England, however I felt that this one was the most iconic. To conclude my final design, I am going to add the colour and text, then I am going to print all 3 designs off and make them into boxes.

15 Box 3 Final

This is my completed version for my final cereal box, which is the England version. This one is my favourite out of the 3 that I designed, as it’s a lot more detailed than the others and took me a lot longer to complete. I also like the red jacket on the bear as I think it brings the image to life as the brown colours are very dull, however it really compliments the other vibrant colours within the image. I think it should be very easy for the children to guess this Landmark as the Big Ben is one of the most famous buildings within England.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE I AM ?

Coconut blossom nectar comes from the flowers not the fruit, so it doesn’t taste like coconut at all.

BEAR FACT

Because coconut blossom nectar has a much lower glycaemic index than sugar it prevents crazy sugar highs and grizzly sugar crashes, keeping kids fuller for longer, and fingers out of the biscuit jar.

16 This is the fully completed design for my final French cereal box. I’ve placed a French flag on the front of the box, so the kids can learn about flags as well as famous landmarks. I think, I’ve kept the back reletively consistant with the front, as I’ve used similar colours and tried to use similar text. bea r code

17 This is the completed version for my Italian themed cereal box. I’ve put the Italian flag on the front so it satys consistant with all the boxes, the kids will also be able identify different flags. I believe that I’ve kept this piece of work consistant too, as the colours and text are the same throughout. bea r code
