ABOUT THE BRIEf
For this brief I am going to convert an alcohol spirit into a fragrance and design the packaging for it. I will undertake several different research methods to ensure that my packaging has been designed to the best of my ability. Firstly, I am going to browse the internet and look at the label designs for all the existing alcohol bottles, and choose all of my favourite ones, I am then going to do the same with fragrance boxes and save the images of all my prefered designs. I am then going to look at the different styles and shapes of fragrance boxes and choose a few of my favourites, once I have done this I am going to start designing my own box shape for my packaging. I am then going to start designing fragrance boxes for my 3 favourite alcohol spirits. When I have designed all 3 packages, I am going to narrow it down to 1 and then develop that idea further until I am fully satisfied. Once I have my final piece I am am going to get it printed on a few different materials such as gloss, semigloss, card and paper to see which outcome is the best. Finally, I am going to put the box together and use a photography studio to photograph the box so my final piece looks presentable.

alcohol bottles
Here, I am going to look at several different alcohol bottles to give me more of a strong idea on the current designs, that I can use for the fragrance packaging. I am going to use several different sources to do this such as the internet, magazines and going into stores like Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys to look at the designs on the alcohol bottles. Just by looking on the internet I have found countless amounts of bottles, that have amazing design work on them, some of them being Jack Daniels, Baileys, Ciroc, Goldschlager, Pimms, Jager Meister, Teachers and Sheridans Liqueur.

Favourite Bottle designs
My favourite designs out of the 9 alcohol bottles are Ciroc, because of the simplicity and the blue-white gradient, I also like the Sheridan’s design as it is half black and half white, I think this could have a lot of potential as a fragrance box, I also like that it has a lot of gold on the label as it will make the packaging look smart and elegant. My third and final favourite design is the Jack Daniels one as I live the attention to detail, especially the smoothness of the curves and shapes on the front of the bottle.

fragrance boxes
I am now going to look at existing fragrance boxes and look into how the layout is done, for example how big the logo is, what colours are most popular, the size of the boxes. I am going to look at male and female fragrances and different price ranged so I can get a mixed view on how to design my packaging.

Favourite Box designs
I had several favorite designs as the ones I chosen all really stood out to me, but if I had to narrow it down to 3 my first choice would the Chanel Bleu packaging as I think the designer put all of the colours together really well, it is also very simple yet effective because it looks really elegant and expensive. I also really like the Joop GO! packaging because it’s such a statement design, the bright green colour makes it look like a fresh, clean and fruity fragrance just by looking at the packaging, I really like the shape and style of the box, because it’s long and narrow and the whole box is green and the it says ‘Joop’ in bold blue writing to make it stand out. My other favorite is the Mont Blanc Starwalker as I really like the way they’ve used a horizontal gradient, the colours also work very well together as it’s a mixture of light blue and drake blue with grey text. The logo placement is also very good as they’ve kept it very plain and smart, I like the way the logo is at the bottom of the box and the text is at the top, and the way the center has been left plain. The Mont Blanc and Joop packaging are sort of similar as they’re both shiny and look like they’ve been printed on gloss, whereas the Chanel one is matte material giving it more of a smooth finish and more of a expensive overall look.

Design 1 Layout
After looking at several existing fragrance packaging’s, I have now begun to create my own layouts. To the upper right of this page, the displayed net will be my first layout of my fragrance box. I implemented the outline of these nets from an existing fragrance box of mine. I have chosen this box for my first attempt as I think I could work well with the shape, as it’s very practical. It’s also very spacious which I like because it gives me enough space to experiment with different designs. I was able to create the net by taking apart my existing fragrance box. There were two separate nets within the box. One of which was the outside layer and, the others purpose was to protect the inside of the box and the perfume itself. Once I’d flattened the nets, I scanned them both onto my computer. I then opened them in Photoshop and straightened them out with the Ruler Tool. From this, I went on to use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to extract the backgrounds from the images and saved them as PNG documents. Once I had saved the documents, I opened them in Adobe Illustrator and drew around them with the Pen Tool. In doing this, it provided me with a guideline so I could begin adding my designs to them.

LIQUEUR SCENTED ESSENCE
Here is my logo development for the Sheridan’s Liqueur. I did this process by getting a picture of the logo from google and then drew around it with the Pen tool on Illustator.

Design 1 Colour Theme
Here, I chose to use the traditional black and white colours from the Sheridan’s bottle. The colours I used were mainly black, white and gold. I made the the gold colour by using the Gradient tool on Illustrator. I had to choose several different shades of brown and yellow in order to create the gold colour below.

Design 1 Outcome
This is my finished design for the Sheridan’s packaging. I’m really happy with the outcome, especially the golden trim because, it made the whole design look more proffessional. However, the only thing I would change about it, would be the logo as it takes up quite a large amount of space. If I get the time to alter this, I would make it smaller and squared as I think it would look more elegant.

10 Design 2 Layout
This is the layout for my second design. To create the layout, I flattened one of my personal fragrance boxes and scanned it onto the computer and then drew around it with the Pen tool on Illustrator.
11 Design 2 Development
I made the Ciroc logo by getting an image of the logo off the internet and drew around it with the Pen tool on Illustrator. However I didn’t use the Pen tool to do the ‘Eau De Toilette’ part, I used a font to create the text which was ‘Normafixed Tryout’.

12 Design 2 Colour Theme
This is the colour theme for the Ciroc packaging. To do this, I use the Gradient tool on Illustrator and used different shades of blue and white. I then applied the Gradient tool to the packaging.

13 Design 2 Outcome
EAU DE TOILETTE
This is the final design for my Ciroc packaging. This is close to being my favourite, mainly because of the colours. I personally think this looks like a real fragrance box compared to the other two deisgns. I think the structure of the layout makes it look like a real fragrance box, especially because the front of the box is very basic yet elegant.

This is the layout for my third fragrance box. Again, I did this by scanning them onto my laptop and drew around them using the Pen tool on Illustrator.
15 Design 3 Development
This is the development of my third design. To create this logo, I sourced an image of the Jack Daniel’s logo from the internet and drew around it with my graphics tablet on Illustrator. To create the text ‘Fragrance’, ‘Scented Musk’, ‘100ml’, and ‘3.4 FL.OZ’, I used fonts as they weren’t on the bottle. I did this to create a more realistic image for the perfume design.

16 Design 3 Colour Theme
The colour theme for the Jack Daniel’s packaging was very straight forward as I used a combination of two colours which were, a light shade of black a plain white.
17 This is the final design for the Jack Daniel’s fragrance. I really like this design as I put a lot of effort into creating and designing the logo however, it’s my least favourite out of the three because, I feel as though it lacks in creativity.

18 Final Pieces
On the right, are my final finished fragrance boxes. Once I had put them together with glue, it gave me the opportunity to assess and evaluate the boxes more accurately. In addition to this, I believe the Ciroc design is more aesthetically pleasing as all of the colours worked really well together. My most preferred design still remains to be the Sheridan’s one because, I really like the half-black and half-white technique as it complements the gold really well.
