CHET BAKER TRIO LIVE IN HAMBURG 1985

This release presents a never before heard and beautifully recorded live performance by the great Chet Baker in a trio format, backed by Philip Catherine on guitar and Riccardo del Fra on bass. These recordings, like many others from the same period, give ample proof that Chet’s talents didn’t diminish during the final years of his troubled life. Curiously, even though both Catherine and Del Fra played extensively with Chet in the 1980s, this appears to be the only existing trio recording with this exact formation.

THE COMPLETE JAZZ LAB SESSIONS FOR THE FIRST TIME ON A SINGLE RELEASE!! This four-disc collection contains all of the recordings of one of the most interesting jazz groups from the late ‘50s, the Jazz Lab, compiled here for the first time ever on one release. Co-led by Gigi Gryce and Donald Byrd, this set comprises the group’s five original studio albums (including all existing supplementary tunes and alternate takes from the sessions), presented here in their entirety and in chronological order. This edition also includes the Jazz Lab’s only known live performance, taped at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957. As a bonus, a complete Oscar Pettiford LP, which constitutes the only other small group collaboration of Gryce and Byrd, and is a precursor to the Jazz Lab sound, as well as a rare 1955 Gigi Gryce quartet session (with Pettiford on bass) in its entirety, which despite having no real relation to the later Gryce-Byrd formation, was issued under the title of Jazz Laboratory Series (probably Gryce chose the group’s name based on that previous release!).

Both LPs present the pianist in a trio format backed by such expert musicians as bassists Art Davis and Henry Grimes, and drummers Elvin Jones and Roy Haynes. As a bonus, Tyner’s debut session as a leader. This release compiles two wonderful LPs presenting Zoot Sims playing bossa nova songs, as well as jazz standards in a bossa nova mood arranged by Manny Albam and Al Cohn: New Beat Bossa Nova (Colpix SCP435), and its sequel, New Beat Bossa Nova Vol. 2 (Colpix SCP437). Recorded in 1962, these were among the first albums to combine bossa nova and jazz. Both LPs feature the outstanding guitarist Jim Hall as a soloist. Curiously, in between the recording of both albums, Sims participated on a third bossa nova project, this time a vocal one, fronted by singer Vi Velasco. This release presents the complete 1962 LP Bossa Nova U.S.A. (Columbia CL1998/CS9364), by the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond, Gene Wright and Joe Morello. Released during the bossa nova craze that took place in the United States in the early 1960s (when many renowned jazz performers also recorded their own blend of bossa and jazz), this was Brubeck’s contribution to the genre although it mostly consisted of the pianist’s own compositions. As a bonus, three songs that complete the album’s sessions, and four isolated tracks from the same period that constitute complete sessions in and of themselves.

This release contains the complete original album Quiet Nights (Columbia CL2106), which marked the final recorded collaboration between Miles Davis and Gil Evans. A controversial LP, neither Davis nor Evans felt it had been finished when it was issued. This release presents the complete studio output of the great Django Reinhardt from 1951 to his very last session (either live or in the studio) on April 8, 1953, which took place nearly one month before the guitarist’s sudden death at the age of 43. All dates showcase him in a small group format and include a good number of compositions by Django himself. Among them is the amazing quartet session he made for Norman Granz in March of 1953, one of Django’s very rare quartet recordings presenting him as the only soloist plus a rhythm section of piano, bass, and drums. As a bonus, a quartet version of “Yesterdays” from that same year, recorded in the studio but only preserved thanks to a radio broadcast. Django died too early to make any stereo recordings. However, by 1953 studio-recording techniques were far better than when he waxed his first sides, and his very last tracks (especially his session for Norman Granz) have probably the best sound quality of his whole discography. wj3 records New Arrivals In the early 90’s, when Willie Jones III was still living in Los Angeles, his mentor, Billy Higgins, imparted a piece of sage advice. “Billy told me not to wait for somebody to decide you’re ready to be a leader”, Jones recalled. This is why in 2000, two years into a run with Roy Hargrove, he decided to self-produce a CD that would “express how I like to hear music”. “I wasn’t thinking about having a record label” Jones said. “The common ground among these musicians is that they love to play a style that some call hardbop or straight-ahead, which I call real jazz” said Jones who became Hank Jones’ drummer of choice in 2007 and held the position until the pianist died in 2010. Thirteen years later, well established as a top call musician, Jones in looking to grow and sustain his WJ3 imprint. “I’d like to have a small boutique label with maybe six or seven artists that records the type of jazz that I like – period”
