Bill Evans trio Live in Hamburg, 1972

plus special feature HERB GELLER (*) all tracks previously unissued! This release presents an amazing never before heard performance with excellent sound quality by the great Bill Evans. Recorded live at the Funkhaus in Hamburg, Germany, in 1972, half of the show presented the Bill Evans Trio, while the other half featured reedman Herb Geller joining the group to perform mostly his own tunes, which Evans - who plays solos on all of them - would never record again ! A rehearsal for the concert, also taped at the Funkhaus two days earlier, rounds out this set. Among several of Geller’s tunes, it includes a version of What Is This Thing Called Love, a song which wasn’t played at the actual concert. As a whole, this set contains all known collaboration between Evans and Geller.

Eddie Gomez had made his last recording with Evans, but he continued to play in the trio for a few more months. In autumn 1977 a date at the Eastman School of Music at Rochester, New York, was scheduled. But Gomez had a recording session fixed in California and was unable to play. Evans asked his former bassist Chuck Israels to fill in and, confident that the problem was solved, discussed repertoire with him on the flight from New York City. Recorded at the celebrated Club Saint Germain, the formation presented here marks the third incarnation of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, with trumpeter Lee Morgan (then only 20 years old), tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merrit. For the last two tunes, bop drum pioneer Kenny Clarke (who was living in Paris) substitutes Blakey. This 2-CD collection presents all of the music originally issued from Chet Baker’s studio sessions made for the small label Barclay during his first European tour in 1955 and 1956, which was initially presented on three LPs and one EP. The first two of these sessions featured the splendid pianist Dick Twardzik, who would die in Paris from a drug overdose soon after the recordings were made. Also featured on this set are Bobby Jaspar, René Urtreger, Francy Boland & Jean-Louis Viale, among others.
