The set (9 Monk classics and one from Ellington) was recorded with some of the brightest talents on the scene today, spanning multiple generations. From start to finish, the album shines fresh light on familiar music, the arrangements bringing a new lens to the elements of genius. - Andrea Cante, Jazz Police The Monk Project is a lively, daring vision of Thelonious Monk that looks ahead at where this great musician can take us. It is not a static idea, thank goodness, and it pops like good jazz should. - Jordan Richardson, Blinded By Sound The album, for me, finds its most striking immediacy when this group digs deepest into the blues underpinnings of Monk’s work, something that’s not explored often enough. - Nick DeRiso, All About Jazz

British jazz is a form of music derived from American jazz. It reached Britain through recordings and performers who visited the country while it was a relatively new genre, soon after the end of World War I. From the late 1940s British “modern jazz”, highly influenced by American Bebop, began to emerge with figures such as John Dankworth and Ronnie Scott. In the 1960s British jazz began to develop more individual characteristics and absorb a variety of influences. A number of British musicians have gained international reputations, although this form of music has remained a minority interest within the UK itself.

TUBBY HAYES

ronnie scott

EDWARD BRIAN “TUBBY” HAYES (1935-1973) was an English jazz multi-instrumental, best knows for his tenor saxophone playing in groups with fellow sax player Ronnie Scott. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest British Jazz instrumentalists From 1957 to 1959 he joined Ronnie Scott in co-leading a quintet, The Jazz Cousiers, perhaps the most fondly remembered of British Modern Jazz groups. Label : Candid - Originally Tempo

Ronnie Scott (originally Ronald Schatt) was born in London, into a family of Russian Jewish descent on his father’s side, and Portuguese antecedents on his mother’s. He was among the earliest British musicians to be influenced in his playing style by Charlie Parker and other bebop musicians. He co-led The Jazz Couriers with Tubby Hayes from 1957 to 1959, and was leader of a quartet including Stan Tracey (1960–1967). Ronnie Scott’s playing was much admired on both sides of the Atlantic. the BLUE NOTES The Blue Notes were a South African jazz sextet, whose definitive line up featured Chris McGregor, Mongezi Feza, Dudu Pukwana, Nikele Moyake, Johnny Dyani, and Louis Moholo. After moving away from their home country in 1964, they established themselves on the European jazz circuit, where they continued to play and record through the 1970s. They are now considered one of the great free jazz bands of their era, whose music was given a unique flavour by their integration of African styles into the progressive jazz ideas of the time.

john dankworth Most of the world knew John Dankworth best as Cleo Laine’s longtime husband and accompanist, but he was a steady player for many decades. He started his career in a novelty and traditional ensemble called the Garbage Men, led by Freddy Mirfield. Dankworth studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1944 to1946. He began the Johnny Dankworth Seven in 1950, and from 1953 to 1964 led a large jazz band featuring Laine. michael garrick

don rendell / ian carr quintet

Michael Garrick (1933- 2011) was an English jazz pianist and composer and a pioneer in mixing jazz with poetry recitations. He came to special prominence in the British contemporary jazz world initially as the pianist with the Don Rendell - Ian Carr quintet from 1965 to 1969, and led his own sextet from 1966. His own record label Jazz Academy Records features many albums by his Michael Garrick Jazz Orchestra and has trio, solo, quartet and other small groupings.

The Don Rendell - Ian Carr quintet, created in 1963, was,a small Brit jazz group that took the country by storm and was well received in Europe and in limited circles in the United States. The band developed a unique sound that came out of hard bop and moved through many different phases, developing a unique musical language before they reached the mountain top of creative expresión.

Chris McGregor was born the son of a Scottish missionary, brought up on church hymns and Xhosa dances. He studied at the Cape Town College of Music and discovered the black jazz scene. His septet played in the 1962 National Jazz Festival, and after founding the Blue Notes in 1963, he led a big band. Harassed by the authorities, they escaped the country through an invitation to the 1964 Antibes Jazz Festival. Fellow expatriate Abdullah Ibrahim helped them find work in Zurich, then at Ronnie Scott’s in London and the Café Montmartre in Copenhagen.

stan tracey Stan Tracey (1926) is an outstanding figure in the jazz world. His distinguished career has spanned six decades of flourishing creativity. Stan’s capricious piano playing combines the percussive melody of Thelonious Monk with the robust lyricism of Ellington in a highly idiosyncratic style. A master of harmony, he possesses a potent and compelling improviser’s intellect. Through Stan Tracey’s unflinching commitment and dedication has emerged a very rare artist who has sustained an output of highly exceptional music. Label : Resteamed - Originally Columbia

elton dean Elton Dean (1945 – 2006) was an English jazz musician who performed on alto saxophone and saxello. Dean established his reputation as a member of the Keith Tippett Sextet from 1968 to 1970, and in the band Soft Machine from 1969 to 1972. From 1975 to 1978 he led a nine-piece band called Ninesense. In 2002, Dean and three other former Soft Machine members (Hopper, Marshall, and Holdsworth) toured and recorded under the name Soft Works. Dean’s playing style could be equally tonal or atonal; his forays into rock with Soft Machine feature a pioneering use of extreme amplification. Label : Cuneiform

turning point

Keith Graham Tippett (1947), went to Greenway Boys Secondary Modern school in Southmead, Bristol. He formed his first jazz band called The KT7 whilst still at school. In the late 1960s, he led a sextet featuring Elton Dean, Mark Charig and Nick Evan. In the early 1970s, his big band Centipede brought together much of a generation of young British jazz and rock musicians. He was also in the vicinity of King Crimson, contributing piano to several of their records.

Turning Point were a late 1970s fusion band from the UK. The band was formed by Jeff Clyne (bass) and Brian Miller (keyboards), who had previously played together in Isotope, and Pepi Lemer (wordless vocals). Also in the band were David Tidball (saxes) and Paul Robinson (drums). They toured the UK, including supporting National Health in 1977. Their final tour in 1980 included Allan Holdsworth and Neil Ardley.

The United Jazz + Rock Ensemble developed from a group of jazz musicians that was formed for a 1974 to 1975 television show of Süddeutscher Rundfunk (South German Broadcasting). The group played mostly original compositions ranging from jazz to rock. During the twenty seven years of its existence the band produced fourteen albums, all of them on Mood Records. In 2002, the group went on their “Farewell Tour 2002”. Among the reasons was Barbara Thompson’s suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL JAZZ ALBUMS ACCORDING TO THE CRITICS OF DOWN BEAT MAGAZINE TRUE JAZZ MASTERPIECES: ALBUMS THAT RECEIVED A 5 STAR RATING ON DOWN BEAT LAURINDO ALMEIDA-BUD SHANK Quartet

hank crawford

Brazilliance Vols. 1 & 2

More Soul + The Soul Clinic + 1 bonus track

This edition contains the complete original album Brazilliance (World Pacific WP-1412, first issued on two 10” LPs) which marked the first small group collaboration ever between Laurindo Almeida and Bud Shank. Their second quartet project, Holiday in Brazil (World Pacific WP1259, also issued as Brazilliance Vol.2,WP1419), has been added here in its entirety as a bonus album.

This edition presents alto saxophonist Hank Crawford’s two initial albums as a leader, More Soul (Atlantic SD1356) and The Soul Clinic (Atlantic SD1372). Both LPs feature nearly the same group, which was in fact Ray Charles’ band of the period minus Charles himself. Joining Crawford are the great saxophonists David “Fathead” Newman and Leroy “Hog” Cooper.

Laurindo Almeida, guitar & Bud Shank, alto sax (flute on 18 & 20 only) on all tracks, plus:

Hank Crawford (as, p), Phil Guilbeau (tp), John Hunt (tp, flhn), David “Fathead” Newman (ts), Leroy “Hog” Cooper (bs), Edgar Willis (b), Milt Turner (d, on 1-7 & 11), Bruno Carr (d, on 8-10 & 12-14)

STAN GETZ / J.J. JOHNSON QUINTET LIVE IN CHICAGO 1988

This release presents a complete previously unissued set by Stan Getz and J.J. Johnson in a quintet format. After their celebrated 1957 performances at the Opera House in Chicago and at the Shrine Auditorium in los Angeles. Getz and Johnson were recorded together again during a 1960 J.A.T.P. European tour, from which our two rare bonus tracks have been taken. They would never record as a team again until the 1988 Chicago concert presented here, which was also their very last known collaboration ever !. The two horns are accompanied by the all-star trio that made up Getz’s regular rhythm section during that period, with Kenny Barron on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums.

• Stan Getz, tenor sax • J.J. Johnson, trombone • Kenny Barron, piano • Rufus Reid, bass • Victor Lewis, drums Chicago Jazz festival, Petrillo Music Shell, Grant Park, Chicago, Illinois, August 31, 1988
