U.S. Project Bridge Youth Ambassadors Visit Jeollabuk-do
T
he Project Bridge Program, whose name captures the goal of reaching across cultural divides to advance mutual understanding, is a collaboration of The Korea Society in New York City, the Pacific Century Institute in Los Angeles, and the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center at the University of Montana in Missoula. Each year, after a competitive application process, 20 high school students — eight from New York, eight from Los Angeles, and four from Missoula — are selected to participate in an academic year-long enrichment program focused on building a greater understanding and appreciation of Korea, its people, and the importance of the Korea-U.S. alliance. This summer, from July 7 to July 9, these 20 very excited U.S. youth ambassadors descended upon Jeollabuk-do. Through the generosity of the Jeollabuk-do Center for International Affairs (JBCIA), they experienced the beauty and wonders the province has to offer: its scenery, food, schools, temples, and its kind hospitality. The group was awed and inspired by their experiences and had lots of fun, too. In one student’s words, “it changed my life” and “gave me the opportunity to meet people halfway across the world that will be in my memories forever and I will take these memories back to the States and share them with my community to spread knowledge and education as well as open-mindedness, empathy, and compassion.”

A
ncient societies adorned themselves with ornaments using natural materials such as seeds, grains, shells, and animal bones for religious rituals or from the belief that these would protect them from diseases. As time progressed, these ornaments turned into artfully crafted jewelry made from precious stones.
A sparkling cultural space The Iksan Jewelry Museum, a cultural space located in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, holds historical artifacts and jewelry from the Three Kingdoms period of Korea. Locals seeking for a different educational and entertainment experience can immerse themselves in Korea’s rich jewelry history and simply appreciate the beautiful collections handmade by Korean master jewelers from all over the country. Officially opened in May 2002, the museum highlights Iksan’s booming jewelry industry. Until the mid-1980s, Iksan was the site of the Jewelry Processing Industrial Complex, where several manufacturers of jewelry and precious stones from all over the country converged. In September 2010, the Jewel Palace opened with an exhibition hall and sales corners for jewelry and precious metals.

Korea’s history etched in precious stones The jewelry museum is divided according to eras and collections from green jade, crystals, stones, and precious metals to original sketches and catalogs. The first section of the museum displays the first ornaments that Koreans used, such as necklaces and bracelets made of shells, animal teeth, and stones. These were mainly used for religious incantation purposes. Historians discovered and agreed that the Three Kingdoms period in Korea produced some of the most fabulous and outstanding jewelry, making it the golden age of ornaments. Members of the royal families wore earrings, necklaces, belts, and rings, mainly made of green, white, and blue jade, glass, crystal, amber, and agate, along with gold and silver.

A place that inspires Aside from displays of historical Korean jewelry, there are several sections in the museum that showcase minerals, crystals, stones, and metals, among many others. These are shaped, detailed, handcrafted and embellished not only by Korean artisans but also lapidaries and jewelers from around the world using the same age-old techniques. One of the main stars of the museum is the Gem Flower, a wonderful creation by Manfred Wild, a world-renowned artisan from Idar-Oberstein, Germany. He is sometimes called “The 21st-Century Faberge” because of his mastery of stone and metal processing, as well as his exceptional skills in cutting gems, shaping stones, and creating art objects. The Gem Flower is a work of art decorated with handcarved flowers made with precious stones, gold, and crystals, while leaves are made with nephrite. It is decorated with thousands of fascinating jewels, with each shaped and detailed by hand, making it a priceless masterpiece. If you’re passionate about wearing or creating jewelry, or simply looking to experience something different, the Iksan Jewelry Museum is the place to be.
A
sk anyone what they miss about life before the pandemic, and the same answers are sure to float to the top: stress-free international travel, group outings with family and friends, and the freedom to enjoy crowded events like festivals and concerts. As a committed introvert, this last one was never much of a loss for me personally — but after attending the Jeonju Ultimate Music Festival (JUMF) this summer, I came to see why so many music lovers have been longing for the energy unique to live performances.

JUMF is a multi-genre music event that has been held in Jeonju every year since 2016. The festival has continued throughout the pandemic, reshaped to follow social distancing measures. This year, that meant mandatory masks even at outdoor performances. The ever-present shadow of the pandemic could also be seen in the last-minute cancellation of a performance from one of the headliners, rock band Jaurim, after the lead singer contracted COVID just before the festival. Still, fans showed up ready to make the most of the performance-filled weekend. JUMF 2022 was a three-day event from August 26–28 across three venues, with the main stage at Jeonju Stadium and other performances at The Musician in Gaeksa and a park in the Jeonbuk National University Hospital campus. At the main stage, festivalgoers could set up tents or mats in the middle of the field, get a closer view of the stage from the standing area, or get a bird’s-eye view from the stadium seating overlooking the event.
I was once again impressed by the level of safety in Korea, as fans could stake out a spot on the field to relax with friends, then leave all their bags and belongings on a mat to enjoy a performance from the standing area, and return to find everything completely untouched. The spotless bathrooms were another pleasant surprise (festival priorities!!). While the concessions didn’t offer anything remarkable, the speedy reentry process made it easy to step out of the festival and grab a meal at a nearby restaurant. The JUMF 2022 lineup had something for everyone, from ballad and pop to rock and hiphop. Saturday seemed to focus more on rock and kicked off with two female rock bands, DIH (동이 혼) and Rolling Quartz. No Brain and Crying Nut, both pioneers of Korean punk music since the 90s, electrified the crowds from the stage later in the day.

Perhaps the most anticipated moment, though, was the headline performance from YB, the legendary rock band headed by singer-songwriter Yoon Do-hyun. As fans all joined in to sing along to beloved songs like “A Flying Butterfly,” the sense of camaraderie was palpable in the summer night air. Other long-running groups like early kpop artists Koyote and hip-hop stars Dynamic Duo rounded out the evening. Sunday seemed to offer a more diverse mix. Fan favorites like Big Mama and Daybreak gave a peaceful energy to the end of the weekend with some pop and ballad songs. However, one of the biggest draws of the day was newcomer Lee Young-ji, the 2019 winner of the hip-hop competition show High School Rapper. While Lee only turned 20 years old right after the festival, she has already amassed a legion of fans thanks to a combination of her rapping skills and her sharp sense of humor on social media and variety shows. Other performers on Sunday included Byebyesea (안녕바다), whose lead singer hails from Jeonju, and R&B star Zion.T.

For many people, kpop is their first exposure to Korean culture, but JUMF 2022 showcased the full range of Korea’s music scene from different genres and generations. As the festival offered discounted tickets to students and staff from Honam-region universities, it was also the perfect chance for international students to learn more about Korean music. Over the festival weekend, hot summer days turned into cool early-autumn nights as fans sang and danced the night away. It’s too early to say what 2023 will bring in terms of pandemic life, but this introvert is already looking forward to next year’s JUMF — and is willing to admit that a bit of group connection is needed every now and then. n social media, the word “vibe” has become trendy among the youth, describing everything from one’s personality, fashion, and music, to places, and work. But what does “vibe” exactly mean? Urban Dictionary describes it as “an emotional atmosphere,” “to have this feeling that what you’re listening, feeling, or seeing is reaching your soul.” In Jeollabuk-do, there are so many places where you can feel this vibe. From the traditional architecture of Jeonju, the tranquil waters of Gunsan and Buan, and the healing nature forests of Jinan and Wanju, to the trendy, exciting spots in Muju, Iksan, and other cities, Jeollabuk-do definitely has a distinct vibe. Some expats who have lived and traveled around Jeollabuk-do explain what this “vibe” means to them.

Bless Maria Gomes, USA “The distinct Jeonju vibe for me feels like it’s home in the way growing up in a smaller town is, but also full of hidden gems and culture. It’s a great city to visit with the same cultural experiences like you’d find in Seoul with less of a crowd! Additionally, folks are so friendly that even if you’re new or unsure of your way, you’ll still feel connected and at home because of how welcoming everyone is.”
Shrutika Sinha, India “Jeollabuk-do has a distinct vibe that carries the past and the present. I graduated from Jeonbuk National University, which makes Jeonju my second home. Even when I moved to Seoul, I still remember that Jeonju is a very vibrant city with people who are mild and soft-natured. Also, the food in Jeonju is amazing; you won’t get that kind of food anywhere else.”
26 | J E O N B U K L I F E
Sol Valdovinos, USA “Jeonbuk’s vibe is chill. In Wanju, the mountains surround the area and there are so many cool cafes with different styles that you won’t get bored. The days are slower here than in Seoul but definitely has its charm. It has a good balance of city and nature.”
Karina Valdovinos, USA “I moved to Jeonju out of convenience because my sister was living there. I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t wish many times to be in Seoul instead. However, after a year of having lived my ‘mundane’ everyday life there, I realized that Jeonju had become a home, where I felt like I belonged to a community, where I was greeted so warmly every time by other people also living their own ‘mundane’ everyday lives. Living in Jeonju was unforgettable. There’s a place for everyone and a space for people to try new things. The sunsets and sunrises are stunning. The way they blend nature and buildings is refreshing. I really like that they only allow buildings to be a certain height in order to allow nature to remain the focal point.”

Samia, Bangladesh “The slow-paced life here in Jeonbuk makes it quite different from life in other cities. The streets are all less crowded and much cleaner than Seoul. The small town feeling is cozy and homely. The distinct vibe I feel especially in Jeonju comes from the traditional elements that give it a unique aura.”
Ashley Petersen, USA “I lived in Jeonju from May of 2017 and at first, I felt that it was a small city and not as exciting as Seoul. I eventually decided to relocate to Seoul in the fall of 2020 and lived there for about a year and a half and discovered an unexpected realization that Jeonju will always have a special place in my heart because it feels like home. Yes, it was exciting to live in the bustling heart of Seoul, but in the end I grew to miss Jeonju. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere of the locals, the outdoor beauty of nature and the best Korean cuisine that I have ever tasted are what makes the ’vibe’ that makes it different from other cities in South Korea. This year I moved back to Jeonju, where I hope to make it my home indefinitely.”
28 | J E O N B U K L I F E
Bree Dunn, Canada “The distinct Jeonbuk vibe is definitely the contrast between traditional Korean culture and the more ’modernized’ Korea. In one way, it brings you back to the roots of culture and food with things like historical villages, all the small local shops, and restaurants that have been passed down from generation to generation. Here, you have the best of both worlds (quiet and suburban feel) and right around the corner are cafes and restaurants that never shut down. Especially in comparison to Canadian cities, it’s a lot easier to be social, make friends, and not feel restricted in terms of activities/ shops/restaurants/etc.”
Audrey Hatlen, USA “When I think of Jeonju, I really think of jeong, like that old school, small-town feeling of community and kindness. Like taxi drivers trying to teach me Korean and aunties trying to randomly feed me. An auntie came up to me and started chatting with me at a subway station in Seoul. She was so sweet and so kind. And then it turned out she was from Jeonju!”

Tell us something about yourself. I’m an English teacher who lives in Jeonju. My name’s Elizabeth Jorgensen. My friends call me Eli. I came to Korea from Peoria, Illinois, way back in 2011 and I haven’t looked back since. I teach at a school from a popular hagwon chain, where I have been for a long time now. It’s an enjoyable place to work at, and I quite like the kids.In my spare time I like to do strength training and exercise and have also started using protein powder including Creatine. Overall, I enjoy living in Korea and hope to have many more years here.
Did you know anything about Korea before coming here? Before 2011, no. I knew a little about Korea from a Korean friend of mine who worked at a college, but otherwise I hardly even knew much about South Korea outside of the occasional Korean comic book.
What are your favorite places in Jeonju?
Can you speak Korean?
My favorite places in Jeonju would have to be Gaeksa shopping center and Jeonbuk National University. I have a special weakness for shopping and browsing, and Gaeksa is just perfect for that. It’s an eclectic mix of old and new buildings and has some fun stores. It even used to have a Pizza Hut and an Outback Steakhouse some years back, though those places closed a few years ago. It’s got some good Korean food, and a few times I’ve gone to the Starbucks location.
I speak very little Korean. I can read Hangul but understand very little of it. I can understand the gist of a conversation when I’m outside, but not the subtle nuances of Korean language. I learned written Korean way back in 2011, but unfortunately my schedule makes it very difficult to learn Korean. Fortunately, I can get by with using online translators.
Jeonbuk National University is great for shopping and relaxing as well. It has a good-sized campus town just outside of the college, and it has got endless Korean barbecue, lamb places, convenience stores, clothing stores, places to relax, study centers, and much more. I’d say it’s my top place in Jeonju.
Tell us something about your work. As I said before, I teach at a location of a popular hagwon chain in Jeonju. My students consist of ages 5-16 and are good kids overall. Our classes are 40 minutes long, but the classes are fairly small, stopping at about eight kids per class. It keeps me fit and sharp because I exercise in the morning with the kindergarten kids, and then I help the big kids’ comprehension in the afternoon by discussing our stories and helping them practice their writing. I quite like my hagwon.

eongeup is a suburb in the southwestern part of Jeollabuk-do. It is in between Jeonju and Gwangju. The city borders Buan and Gimje to the west; and Sunchang, Wanju, and Imsil to the east; and Gochang and Jangseong to the south. Jeongeup is beautiful all year long. It’s a place where nature, culture, and history still exist along with leisure and dining adventures. Jeongeup has been working hard these past few years to boost its economy and tourism by protecting, preserving, and enhancing places that have existed since the city was established. Let me show you Jeongeup’s nine places to visit where nature, culture, and history come alive. You can also see all kinds of festivals that are full of life, colors, and joy celebrated throughout the year.

It was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019. A seowon typically consists of three domains: learning, veneration, and interaction, in which a lecture hall, a shrine, and a pavilion are situated respectively. This is the only seowon in Jeollabuk-do that has not been demolished, and its original form has been well preserved. It’s a historical site where Myeonam Choi IkHyeon and Dunheon Lim Byungchan raised the Honam Army to protest the Japanese invasion in 1906. outh Korea is really blessed with many beautiful nature spots. And Jeongeup is one of the best places to live and visit. And the best thing about it is that access to transportation increases rural residents’ ability to access recreation, entertainment, and other activities that promote community engagement. There’s Jeongeup KTX Station as well as intercity and express bus terminals, which are convenient for people who have no cars. Both express and intercity buses have extensive networks throughout the country, providing transportation between cities at reasonable prices and on a timely schedule. As part of the contactless travel experience amid COVID, spurring on changes of lifestyle, car camping has really taken off these past few years as one of the biggest social trends. Camping has been a safe outdoor activity amidst the pandemic. COVID doesn’t have to halt all the fun, and the outdoors are a perfect getaway: a lower risk of spread, an emotional boost, and vitamin D from sunlight. A safe, inexpensive vacation alternative, car camping is known in Korea as chabak or chacnic (차박 and 차크닉), a combination of cha, the Korean word for car, and either bak, a word for staying overnight, or picnic.
Naejang Mountain National Leisure Campground 정읍시내장산국민여가캠핑장
Naejang Mountain National Leisure Campground is a place where you can enjoy different kinds of camping. There’s general camping zones, autocamping zones, glamping, and even an igloo zone. Around the campsite, there are many things to see and enjoy, such as the waterpark and a fountain show in summer. You can also rent bikes, visit Jeongeup City Museum, and walk around Naejang Reservoir, Maple Ecopark, and the sculpture park. Sleeping in a car can make for an efficient and flexible alternative to tent camping. Sleeping in your car can actually offer some additional protection from the elements. I personally prefer sleeping in my car’s backseat in summer. It’s another option for those who want to experience the outdoors right next to your car without the hassle of carrying stuff you need when camping. Find a beautiful location to spend the night (but make sure that there’s an accessible restroom nearby). Gunsan, Gochang, and Buan have beautiful sunsets that you can enjoy it the sea. Also, there are many valleys in Muju and Jinan where you can rest and listen to the sounds of creeks. Here are a few tips and hacks to make your outing more comfortable, organized, and fun.

eonju is almost synonymous with its hanok village, which is undoubtedly the city’s most popular destination. But not far from this busy tourist spot is the Seohak-dong Art Village, which is a must-visit place to see authentic craftsmanship and artworks by Jeonju’s local artists. This calm and quiet village has its unique charm. It is located in Dongseohak-dong and Seohak-dong south of the hanok village and Jeonjucheon Stream, surrounded by Godeoksan Mountain, Girinbong Peak, and Wansan Chilbong Peak.
In the past, the Seohak-dong was considered one of the less developed and poorer neighborhoods in Jeonju. However, since 2010, artists began settling in the village, with local painters, musicians, and other artists opening studios there. Soon, the village was revitalized with colorful shops, quaint cafes, and small privately owned museums. The city of Jeonju considers this “urban regeneration through art” in Seohak-dong one of its many success stories, similar to the ones in Palbok-dong Factory of the Arts and the Jaman Village.

A GOLDEN AFTERNOON IN GEUMMA-MYEON THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IN IKSAN IS A HIDDEN HANOK HOTSPOT. BY BETHANY MCCALL

hile the most well-known spot for hanok sightseeing in Jeollabuk-do may be Jeonju’s hanok village, it’s hardly the only one to be found in the province. If you’re looking to escape the tourist crowds, head to Geumma-myeon in Iksan to experience the natural serenity of hanok. This neighborhood is located between the Mireuksa and Wanggung-ri historical sites, both part of the Baekje historic areas that were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015. Perhaps appropriately in a place with such deep historical roots, Geumma-myeon is home to a growing hanok village where tradition is part of everyday life.
Geumma Library Geumma-myeon boasts the first hanok-style library in Jeollabuk-do, which opened in early 2021. Geumma Library is at the end of a quiet street alongside several hanok guesthouses and private residences, giving it a cozy neighborhood feel. The first floor houses children’s books and has several raised wooden seating platforms that line the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a small courtyard. Books for adult readers can be found on the basement level. Although Geumma Library embraces traditional hanok principles, it’s anything but stuffy and old-fashioned. On the day I visited, the first floor was full of families enjoying the sunny reading space and young children playing together. It’s a place where the next generation can grow up together with hanok. From the hanok village and library, you can pass through a small park and over a stream. Lined with cherry blossom trees on one side and metasequoia trees on the other, the stream is sure to be beautiful in any season. A short walk up the main street of “downtown” Geumma-myeon will lead you to two popular hanok cafes, each with its own unique atmosphere.

Glory
Geumma Coffee
Future Developments
Just like at Geumma Library, plenty of families with children were enjoying the afternoon at the hanok cafe Glory during my visit. The interior features an upstairs loft seating area that’s fun for both children and adults to explore. Glory offers coffee, unique tea blends, and baked goods, including a variety of cookies and scones.
While Geumma Coffee features sophisticated furnishings inside of an elegant and spacious hanok, for me the best part of visiting the cafe is sitting in the serene garden. Geumma Coffee is the perfect place to appreciate the madang, or yard, as an integral part of hanok architecture. The cafe’s madang incorporates traditional features such as carefully pruned pine trees and a small fish pond, and it offers a relaxing view across neighboring hanok rooftops that curve into the rolling hills behind. Geumma Coffee’s menu includes cakes and specialty coffee blends — and my personal favorite, a creamy mugwort latte.
Geumma-myeon already makes for a relaxing stop in between visiting Iksan’s Baekje historic areas, and it’s developing a more in-depth visitor experience with a world heritage tourist information center set to open at the southern end of the neighborhood. While the center is in the early stages of construction, it includes plans for a towering Baekje-style pagoda that is sure to be worth visiting when completed.

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay Location: Okjeongho Lake Flower Field, Imsil
This beautiful field of flowers was featured in episodes 1 and 2 of the drama, in a flashback showing the two main characters, Mun-yeong and Gang-tae, as childhood friends. The two share a special friendship, until Gang-tae runs away in fear from Mun-yeong after seeing her pulling off the wings of butterflies. The sprawling beds of flowers are located next to Okjeongho Lake (옥정호). It is best to come here around summer and spring, when the flowers are in full bloom. The area is also popular for camping, fishing, and hiking, and on special occasions, visitors flock to this part of Imsil for the flower and autumn festivals. 473-9 Unjong-ri, Unam-myeon, Imsil-gun, Jeollabuk-do 전라북도 임실군 운암면 운종리 73-9

Extraordinary Attorney Woo Young Woo Location: Gochang
This drama caused a sensation when its first episode aired on Netflix because of its heartwarming story featuring a genius lawyer on the autism spectrum. With her photographic memory and passion for justice, she becomes an asset to a big law firm despite experiencing prejudice from some of her peers. In one episode, a fictional town called Sodeok-dong is on the brink of displacement until a 500-yearold hackberry tree (팽나무) saves it from being rebuilt as a highway. The tree is actually located in Bukbu-ri, Daesan-myeon, Uichang-gu, Changwon, and was designated as a protected tree in 2015. While the actual filming location is not in Jeollabuk-do, you can find another legendary hackberry tree in Gochang. The Cultural Heritage Administration (Director Lee Geon-moo) designated the tree as Natural Monument No. 494. According to records, 400 years ago, many residents gathered in front of the tree to pray, have community gatherings, and hold special events. Mister Sunshine
Location: Hagindang Residence, Hanok Village, Jeonju
At the time of the airing of the drama “Mister Sunshine,” there was a huge interest in the modern history of the Japanese occupation of South Korea (then Joseon) and the United States expedition to the country. A young boy sneaks into an American ship in an accident, and eventually lives there as an American soldier. As an adult, he then returns to his home country as an American soldier who has mixed feelings about his identity. Located in Jeonju, Hagindang is one of the most famous old residences in the hanok village, having been built in 1908 by Baek Nak-jung, with the blessing of Emperor Gojong of Korea. Hagindang rents the space for photoshoots, traditional experiences, or accommodation. Hyanggyo-gil 47, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si 전주시 완산구 향교길 7 Website: https://hagindang.modoo.at/
