ADVENTURE! 2013 Residential Trips for Primary Schools
WELCOME… With our 17th successful year under our belts, we are now looking forward to your groups travelling with us in 2013. We have developed new activities at all of our centres and this development will continue in 2013, as we look to provide the best experience and superb value for money. Our JCA “excellence” centre, Condover Hall, has been a huge success and continues to excite both students and adults alike as we move into our third year of operation. This amazing product has opened up new opportunities for schools with its unique activities and impressive setting offering both midweek and weekend breaks.
We are offering a vast range of centres and activities with something for everyone from educational and environmental challenges to high adrenaline adventures. Our staff and centres are inspected and continually monitored by National Governing Bodies* to ensure the quality and content of your stay is of a consistently high standard and value for money.** Many thanks for your time and we really hope you enjoy our new 2013 brochure.
Young people of all ages benefit from real life “hands on” experiences; when they can see, hear, touch and explore the world around them and have opportunities to experience challenges and adventure. Children need to realise the relationship between school experiences and the wider world, however the classroom alone does not always provide these opportunities. Every young person should be inspired and encouraged to venture outside their comfort zone as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability and circumstances.
let 01
the adventure begin…
Janie Burt (Travel Class Managing Director)
* We conform to National Governing Bodies’ Codes of Practice, we are full BAPA members, AALA Licensed where appropriate and hold the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge and Adventuremark. See page 66 for more safety info. ** We will not be beaten on price when pricing a like for like stay!
Our Centres For 2013 JCA has selected ten centres throughout the UK that all provide an excellent base for young people to experience new and exciting challenges in a safe, fun and friendly environment. We have our flagship Condover Hall property which was brand new for 2011 and exclusive to JCA. This beautiful Elizabethan Mansion House is steeped in history and has undergone a multi million pound refurbishment programme to turn it into a superb residential centre. This centre offers our widest range of indoor and outdoor activities; everything from Laser Mazes & Tunnelling Room to High Ropes and Water Sports. Our Seaside Centres offer a range of activities in four beachside locations. From ‘Hit the Surf’ programmes in Cornwall and Dorset, and Beach
Contents Welcome 1
Games in Suffolk to pool snorkelling and aquajets in Hampshire, we are sure your students will enjoy having fun in the fresh seaside air. At our Countryside Centres, which are all unique, we have options ranging from High and Low Ropes to Eco Challenges and Camp Fires, depending on the centre. We have great locations to explore the natural environment in beautiful surroundings. Our water sports locations; Sandymouth, Coft Farm, Ashburnham Place and Condover Hall have access to large lakes or beaches and offer a range of water-based activities, as well as superb landbased challenges, making them fun, exciting and challenging for all ages wishing to develop new skills.

Our Pledge…
Learning Outside the Classroom… Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age ability and circumstances.
We have pledged to engage in an ongoing process to sustain high-quality learning outside the classroom, by demonstrating that we have met six quality indicators:
● We have a process in place to assist users to plan the learning experience effectively
● We will provide accurate information about what we are offering
● We will provide activities, experience and resources which meet learner needs
● We will review the experience and act on feedback
● We will meet the needs of the users ● We have a safety management processes in place to manage risk effectively
Young people of all ages benefit from real life ‘hands on’ experiences; when they can see, hear, touch and explore the world around them and have opportunities to experience challenges and adventure. They need to realise the relationship between school experiences and the wider world. The classroom environment doesn’t always provide young people with enough of these opportunities. Learning Outside the Classroom aims to get students and young people out and about. Experiences ranging from activity days to residential stays help motivate young people, reducing poor behaviour and truancy, while helping schools to raise attainment and meet Every Student Matters outcomes. There is an increasing body of evidence which clearly demonstrates the benefits for young people’s learning and personal development outside the classroom. In summary, when young people learn outside the classroom, they:
● are exposed to new experiences ● learn in different ways related to their learning styles ● are motivated to learn more and feel positive about learning ● become self-confident, developing self-esteem and self-awareness ● work together, fostering decision-making and teamwork ● improve communication skills with peers and adults ● are healthier, and their sense of well-being increases ● appreciate the links between formal and informal learning JCA are Learning Outside the Classroom quality badge holders ensuring good practice, high quality teaching and learning experiences and risk management. Our courses promote personal, social and health education by:
● allowing young people to face new challenges and overcome fears ● developing coordination and mastering new skills ● developing effective communication skills ● adapting to new situations and environments ● solving problems and taking responsibility ● encouraging discipline and self control ● increasing self esteem and confidence ● promoting team work ● gaining independence ● promoting a healthy lifestyle ● developing a positive attitude towards others and balancing points of view

Sample Itinerary Recruiting, Supervising and Training As a recognised Investor in People, we understand that the training and development of staff is the key to any successful company.
Recruitment
Three Steps to recruiting JCA staff… 1. Many of our centre staff have worked for JCA in previous seasons and choose to return year after year. We also place advertisements in specialist publications to attract new recruits. 2. Prior to recruitment, all staff are required to complete a detailed JCA application form. Individuals are then selected for interview and are assessed on their enthusiasm, friendliness and suitability to work with students. 3. Two mandatory references are taken for each potential employee, plus an enhanced disclosure to the Criminal Records Bureau (or equivalent government agency).
Instruction and Supervision ● Our instructor to student ratio is a maximum of 1 to 12 for land-based activities, 1 to 8 for surf activities and 1 to 8 for all other water sports. These ratios comply with the strict standards of the appropriate governing bodies. ● We lead the way in the multi-activity industry by training our instructors in all of our activities (with the exception of water sports where we employ specialist instructors). ● We aim for each individual to be qualified in every activity and offer the unique policy of one dedicated multi-trained instructor per group for the duration of your stay. ● Having a multi-skilled instructor helps us to understand the strengths, limitations and personalities of each student which, in turn, helps students to reach their full potential through trust and support. ● A full list of instructors’ names and qualifications are held on-site and is available to groups upon request.
Professional Training ● S uccessful applicants are offered provisional contracts of employment which are subject to satisfactory completion of our intensive training course. ● The training course prepares them for their future role and involves coaches from national governing bodies as well as extensive in-house training by managers and/or senior instructors. ● Successful staff must then complete a probationary period of work, during which time they are supervised and assessed by senior JCA instructors. ● Instructors are provided with our comprehensive company training manual which includes: Activity Sessions Standards and Procedures - Strict Safety Standards and Guidelines for the conduct of all activities. Other subjects include health & safety at work, student protection, group management and other essential skills.

Frequently asked questions… Why is a Residential Course so important to our school? In addition to covering several key aspects of the National Curriculum, a visit to a JCA centre provides your group with a brand new learning environment to build confidence and develop independence. Your group will experience challenging and exciting adventures in a safe and secure setting that will encourage team building and most of all, FUN! This is widely recognised and supported by all the leading political parties and is demonstrated through recent investment. “School trips are an integral part of school life… Teachers and pupils gain immensely from such trips, not only do they have a high educational content, but they allow teachers and pupils to get to know each other better in a different environment from the classroom”. National Union of Teachers.
How do you compare to your competitors? JCA is one of a select few UK Schools Activity Companies to provide you with one dedicated instructor per activity group for the duration of your stay. This enables the instructors to understand the strengths, limitations and personalities of each individual and helps them reach their full potential through this trust and rapport. We are confident that our prices are the most competitive, our packages are inclusive of full holiday insurance and we always offer 1:8 free places for accompanying adults. We won’t be beaten on price! (With the exception of any special offers).
We have always travelled with another company and would like to change but I am not sure I can cope with all the paperwork? We make it easy! We can send you our Safety Management Policy and risk assessments and will even complete your EV form for you. It is likely that we are already approved by your Local Authority as we have been working with schools from their area for years. Our staff have attended the Education Visits
67
coordinator course, so they understand what is required when you are booking a trip. We encourage Party Leaders who are not familiar with the JCA experience to join us on our preview visit events to meet the team and other teachers. These events provide you with the ideal opportunity to view the centre and surroundings and ask our staff any questions.
Our school is on a tight budget, how can you help? All of our prices are extremely competitive and our packages have been designed to suit everyone’s needs. If your school is on a tight budget you can take advantage of our off-peak dates and tailored durations, including part weeks and weekends.
We are unable to book anything yet as we don’t know our exact group size? We make it easy; you can secure your preferred centre and dates with a non-refundable Holding Deposit of only £20 per person (+VAT). Holding Deposits will be taken to represent your maximum group size. Should your group size decrease after receipt of your holding deposit, the excess payment received will be credited against the final balance invoice.
Are your centres and activities accredited? All of our centres and activities operate to the highest safety standards and we continually monitor, assess and develop our procedures to ensure that those standards are consistently maintained. We conform to several National Governing Bodies’ Codes of Practice and always strive to exceed their standards. For more information on our accreditations, please refer to page 5 and page 66.
What specialist equipment do you provide? Helmets and buoyancy aids are supplied and must be worn as directed by our staff. Wetsuits are also provided where applicable. Specialist equipment for all our activities is supplied free of charge in our prices.
call: 0845 8051108 email: enquiries@jca-adventure.co.uk web: www.jca-adventure.co.uk
Is our group insured or do we need to organise separate insurance? Fully comprehensive insurance is always included free of charge in our prices. It covers each student and adult from the moment your booking is confirmed until you return back to school after your trip, including travel and all our activities. We will provide you with a detailed policy document for your reference.

Our team of instructors will ensure that every evening is packed with fun activities to make every day memorable, and send the students to bed with that wonderfully content feeling of tiredness and happiness combined! Do you cater for students with specific needs?
We would like to visit local attractions during our stay, is this possible?
Absolutely! We are dedicated to providing every young person with the opportunity to enjoy the JCA experience. Many special needs students and groups travel with us every year, as most of our activities can be adapted to suit the needs of the individual student. We will be happy to discuss your specific requirements at the time of booking.
Yes! Our Activity and Education course offers groups the opportunity to visit some of the wonderful local attractions. We will be happy to organise a full or part programme for your group. We will also gladly help to recommend excursions from any of our centres for you if require, however, as we are not part of TOMS, we cannot arrange your transport.
How will our school be split into individual activity groups?
What happens if it rains?
We have a unique policy of one dedicated multi-trained instructor per activity group for the duration of your stay. The maximum number of students per activity group is 12 - you will decide how the group is split.
Do we keep our instructors all week? Your instructors will stay with your groups throughout your course, although there may be some cases where you will have another instructor for a specialist activity session such as water sports.
How many free places do we get and how many adults can we bring? For every 8 students, you are entitled to 1 free adult place. We do not insist that you take up this allocation, however you will need to take an adequate number of adults to supervise your group on a ‘loco parentis’ basis. You are welcome to bring additional adults at a supplementary charge.
Most activities can continue in wet weather and extra time will be allocated for everyone to dry off properly. If the weather is extreme and activities cannot take place, the Centre Manager will implement the centres’ Wet Weather Plan.
Can your staff administer first aid and medication? All of our instructors are First-Aid trained, however it is the responsibility of the accompanying adults to administer any medication that is required or prescribed.
What happens in an emergency? All of our staff are trained to deal with issues in a fast and efficient manner. A member of our on-site staff will be on duty 24 hours at day throughout your stay. There is a mobile phone available at each centre in the unlikely event of an emergency.

As far as sea carriage is concerned the companys liability is limited as if we were carriers within the appropriate national convention. Our acceptance of this liability is conditional upon your notifying us in writing within 28 days of your return from your trip, and where any payment is made to you or a member of your party by us or our insurers, we reserve the right to claim against any third party responsible. I - Complaints Procedure 1. If there is a problem during the course, the party leader should speak immediately to the Centre Manager who will probably be able to resolve it. 2. If the problem cannot be resolved at the Activity Centre during the course, the Party Leader should write to the company with full details on his/her return within seven days. 3. Disputes arising out of, or in connection with, this contract which cannot be amicably settled may be referred to arbitration, if the customer so wishes, under a special Scheme arranged by the Association of British Travel Agents, and administered independently by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. 4. The scheme provides for a simple and inexpensive method of arbitration on documents alone with restricted liability on the customers in respect of costs. Full details will be provided on request or can be obtained from the ABTA website (www.abta. com). The Scheme does not apply claims for an amount greater than £5,000 per person. There is also a limit of £25,000 per booking form. Neither does it apply to claims, which are solely in respect of physical injury or illness or their consequences. The Scheme can however deal with compensation claims, which include an element of minor injury or illness subject to a limit of £1,000 on the amount the arbitrator can award per person in respect of this element. The application for arbitration and Statement of Claim must be received by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators within nine months of the date of return. Outside this time limit arbitration under the Scheme may still be available if the company agrees, but the ABTA Code does not require such agreement.
