As we approach the end of our 2012 season, we would like to recognise the talent of 2012. All of our tournaments have been full of great netball competition and all teams have shown improvements over the course of the weekend. Below are just a few to acknowledge…
Wood Green Academy
Coloma Convent School
Star player goes to…
St Marthas Senior Schools Goal Defence showing great team spirit and outstanding defence against the opposition. Some brilliant interceptions and marking won back the ball for her team. Superb!
Herts & Essex High School A very competitive and exciting final was had by Herts & Essex High School. There was a head to head battle between the year 8 teams (Herts 1 & 2). With a win from Herts 1 who scored 5 goals to 1. A smashing final result! The year 10 team also proved unbeatable after winning 8-2 against Grove School. Great marking and passing throughout each match! Having not attended a weekend netball tournament before, Wood Green Academy grew from strength to strength over the course of their weekend. The coach set realistic goals for the individual teams, and they improved continuously increasing the goals they scored. Great effort girls! We look forward to seeing you next year.
Fantastic team work and accurate shooting was witnessed throughout this tournament. This was shown in the finals, with their Year 7 team keeping their composure and winning the final 4-1, and their Year 8 team coming runners up after a hard fight in the final’s. Well done! Who is going to take the Coloma Convent teams on next year??
Cheltenham Ladies College
Cheltenham Ladies College had a great weekend of netball competition. With their year 7’s coming face to face in the finals, and their year 9 team staying focused and performing well as a team to beat Hartford High School to a 3-0 win. Some great play on the netball court.
following your feedback and suggestions.
grow in confidence on the netball court and witnessing the support from the teachers A key priority to all at Condover Hall is to and coaches from the sidelines. Over 20 million people from 70 different countries play netball.
Get kitted out Having the correct training shoes is important. They need to be comfortable and have good grip on them.
Practise different moving styles Netball requires players to move in different ways, so practise sprinting, jogging, running backwards and side stepping.
Warm up well This is essential prior to playing as netball is a notorious sport for injuries, as lots of twists and abrupt stopping are involved.
Practise patterns of netball play Once you’ve started to get some of the basics mastered, start to consider patterns of play on the court. Your coach will be able to tell you which tactical patterns your team uses most and help you with this.
Practise passing the ball with a friend Passing is the most important skill in netball, so practise on the court, at home, or wherever you are.
Jo Coker
HC Tournaments Organiser My Introduction to netball When I was 7 years old, my mum used to play for the army, I used to have to go and watch so this got me hooked at a young age. Then in 1989 when our local community centre was built they put a very odd shape netball court in the main hall, we advertised that we were going to run netball training and we had over 40 ladies turn up to the first netball session we ran. There is only so much training you can do so we eventually entered 2 teams into our local league and so I helped my mum run the two teams. Over the years this has dwindled down to one team but we are still going even though we have changed names several times with sponsorship changes etc.
Try playing different positions Not everyone finds their best role instantly. It’s important to try out several positions to see which one suits you best – and it’s not a bad idea to be versatile and able to switch positions if required.
Practise netball by yourself Use lots of targets on a wall (or draw them out using chalk) at different heights so that you can practise different passes. Remember to also vary Watch others play how close you stand to the wall. Watching other people playing netball can Get fit allow you to pick up plenty of tips. Look at Netball is normally played at a fast pace, the movement and tactics employed by other so keep your fitness levels up. Start by people who play in the same position as you. jogging shorter distances then increase the Enjoy pace/distance over time. Just make sure it’s Playing netball should be fun. So be achievable. competitive, but enjoy yourself to.
Why did I decide to become an umpire As a player I was never going to make the big league so felt becoming an umpire was a chance to be involved in the top netball games. What has been my greatest achievement over the years Some years ago I was asked by one of the biggest local clubs to join them and play, that was a big compliment at the time. Umpiring and Coaching Junior teams I’ve been involved in umpiring junior teams for over 7 teams. As a player/ umpire I’ve played or been involved in adult tournaments all over the UK and enjoyed the tournament atmosphere. I’ve had the opportunity to play teams from all over the country, therefore running the tournaments for juniors gives young teams the chance to play teams they wouldn’t normally play in their local area. Seeing those teams improve over the weekend with every game they play and even seeing those teams who haven’t played before get that one goal it can get quite emotional.

Believe it or not, the most goals scored in a netball match was 149-0. This meant the GS or GA scored a goal every 40 seconds of the match.
