Summer 2019
WELCOME Dear Members, This spring, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of opening the doors of the Staenberg Family Complex – Fitness & Wellness Building – and what an amazing ride it’s been! It feels like yesterday that we welcomed dignitaries, board members and the extraordinary (then) 102-year-old patriarch, I.E. Millstone, to address the large gathering. And what we have been able to do since 2009 has surpassed all of our goals. With your support and commitment to the J’s mission, we have hosted more than 10 million visits to our three campuses – SFC, the Marilyn Fox Building and Camp Sabra! We have taught thousands of kids to swim, doubled the number of campers at Camp Sabra, fostered more intergenerational activities with our Early Childhood Center, cultivated the Garden of Eden, created the IN Program, fostered the Jewish Arts & Soul Project, brought Sababa to the community, and feats too numerous to mention. I believe we offer something for everyone, and invite you to get involved at the J. The St. Louis Jewish Community Center enriches lives, builds community, promotes inclusivity and creates meaningful Jewish experiences. I hope you will look through this guide and find ways to become a part of our community. Wherever you’re from, whatever your faith, we appreciate diversity while remaining true to our Jewish roots. We have facilities like no other J in the United States. While we want you to take advantage of these accommodations, it’s you, our members, who make the J such an outstanding destination. I hope you find something here that provides you with meaning and connection. Ten years is a long time…but we’re just getting started! See you at the outdoor pools this summer (opening May 25)!

SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS Something for Everyone! FITNESS & RECREATION
Train, play, splash, sweat, relax and repeat! We offer so many ways to find your wellness groove, we dare you not to find your center at the J. Our goal is to get you energized and moving, testing your limits, joining a team, all while delighting in your accomplishments and relishing the opportunities. We believe you will form the foundation of an active lifestyle filled with meaningful relationships. Page 25
ARTS & CREATIVITY
This summer, we’ll engage the greater St. Louis Jewish community in an exploration of Jewish identity and culture through film, music, visual arts, literature and more through thought-provoking discussions and moving performances that engage the mind, heart and spirit. Find an activity or event that speaks to you and give it a try. Page 39
SWIM & SPLASH
All five J pools will be full of fun after Memorial Day, as families, campers, swim teams and others dive, jump, learn, or just relax in and around them. The mitzvah of teaching a child to swim can build confidence, healthy habits, independence and other skills that offer benefits for a lifetime. In addition, pools become a child’s playground, from the slides and inflatables to the climbing walls and diving boards. Page 9

Your camper will receive swim lessons, leadership opportunities, numerous ways to build confidence and friendships and memories to last a lifetime! Page 20
CELEBRATING ABILITIES
We have day-long programs, chances to shine on stage, fitness opportunities and more to welcome all ages and differing abilities. Our many services support our diverse community as we strive to empower everyone to feel like he/she is part of the J. We want to make all programming adaptable (whenever possible), to meet the needs of all individuals, and create a safe and comfortable environment. Pages 43 & 46
JEWISH LIFE
We celebrate our Jewish identity and welcome people from every faith and background. We provide a rich array of social, cultural and educational programs and events to deepen our connections with Jewish values and our larger Jewish community, both locally, nationally and internationaly. We serve as a gathering place for cultural celebrations, community groups and activities for all ages. Pages 24 & 44

Focus is on proper breathing and movements; should leave feeling looser and relaxed. Hatha Yoga, Level 2-3: Class should feel challenging at this intermediate to advanced level as you continue mastering basic postures, and more dynamic and complex ones – may include arm balances, deep backbends and inversions. Vinyasa Yoga, Level 1-2: Get introduced to smooth transitions (flowing) which link your breath to movements at this beginner/intermediate level. Class will vary regularly and should test you physically. Vinyasa Yoga, Level 2-3: An intermediate/advanced class that flows quickly between poses and may include complex postures. For those with a regular vinyasa and pranayama (breathing) practice who want to further develop their practice.
Choose your level and fall in love with Yoga at your own pace.
