Banot Buddies – Kickoff Event

2nd-4th grade girls Banot Buddies pairs younger girls with teenage girls in high school. The program takes a closer look at girls’ topics through a Jewish lens, and focuses on a particular area that is relevant to modern “girlhood.” The older girls serve as mentors as they encourage those who are younger to find healthy ways of navigating through girlhood. The relationships between both groups support the fostering of leadership skills, self-esteem, and a life-long connection to Jewish ideals. NJT’s Theatre Chaverim 3rd-5th grade Capture the Moon By Ernest Joselovitz and Harry M. Bagdasian A long time ago, before street lights were invented, the people in a Jewish shtetl were too poor to have lanterns to light their way around their village on moonless Sabbath nights. So what do they do? They come up with imaginative ways to capture the full moon! Based on Jewish folktales of Chelm, and laced with irony and wit, this funny new play takes a light-hearted look at what it’s like to be different. It’s also a celebration of simple wisdom, tolerance and uniqueness.

Elijah’s Violin A Jewish Fairytale by Howard Schwartz • Adapted for the stage by Cindy Lewis A short play opening for Capture the Moon, Elijah’s Violin is an ancient Jewish fairytale from Egypt. King Khaba is off to war and promises a gift to each of his three daughters upon his return. Though the youngest daughter only wishes for her father’s safe return, she is advised to ask for a particular violin, which in turn brings wondrous gifts and teaches what is most important in life. Adult Programming In Good Health: Medical Dilemmas That Matter to You

Adult Where do we draw the line between supporting life and prolonging death? Should we permit the sale of organs in the hope of saving them? Human beings inevitably confront complex but important choices regarding their bodies, their lives and their mortality. Discuss how Jewish values impact these issues in this six-week Jewish Lights Institute (JLI) class. Contact: ShowMeChabad.com/JLI or call 314-725-0400. Offered by Chabad of Greater St. Louis in partnership with the JCC. SFC Mon 11/18-12/23 7-8:30pm Fee: $69 (includes textbook) First-time JLI students are welcome to attend first session free. ___________________________________________________________

It’s a New Year. So Why Is It the Same Old You? 10Q: Reflect, React, Renew at www.doyou10Q.com/stlouis

Adult The ten days between the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are oft considered a perfect period of reflection, an opportunity to look at where you’re at, where you’ve come from, and where you’re heading. Whether you’re religious or not, Jewish or not, introspective or not, literate or not, we invite you to take part in 10Q (www.doyou10Q.com\stlouis), an online series of questions, one a day for ten days. Answer the questions and email them to a secure online vault just after Yom Kippur; next year, before Rosh Hashanah, these same answers will be sent back to you for reflection, and the whole process will begin again. Whether you do it once or become an annual 10Qer, we hope that in pondering and scribbling your answers, 10Q will help connect you to parts of yourself that often get lost in the midst of fast-paced, twenty-first century life.
