Dean Robbins with Thank You, Dr. Salk
Families with children 5-10 years During his St. Louis childhood, Dean Robbins fell in love with Mighty Mouse and Superman, dressing up in superhero costumes and vowing to save the world. When he finally realized he would never have X-ray vision, he found real-life Jewish heroes who could be his role models, including Jonas Salk, the scientist who conquered polio. Dean introduces Salk and many others with Thank You, Dr. Salk. He also reveals the secrets of how kids can become superheroes themselves. SFC Sun 2/27 1:00pm Free
Sam Cohen with Sarahland
Adults In Sarahland, Sam Cohen brilliantly and often hilariously explores the ways in which traditional stories have failed us, both demanding and thrillingly providing for its cast of Sarahs new origin stories, new ways to love the planet and those inhabiting it and new possibilities for life itself. In one story, a Jewish college Sarah passively consents to a form-life in pursuit of an MRS degree and is swept into a culture of normalized sexual violence. A Buffy-loving Sarah uses fan fiction to work through romantic obsession. Readers witness as the ever-evolving “Sarah” gets recast: as a bible-era trans woman, an aging lesbian literally growing roots, a being who transcends the earth as we know it. While Cohen presents a world that will clearly someday end, “Sarah” will continue. MaTovu (4200 Blaine Ave, 63110) Sun 2/27 7pm $20 or FREE with a JBF All-Access Pass
