J Annual Report 2013

2013: Another Memorable Year at the J Impact. The word itself is … impactful. It creates change. It leaves a lasting effect. It means business. Impact is a concept that is being discussed by our program staff, our management team and our funding agencies. It’s been top of mind for quite some time. Recently, we’ve begun the painstaking process of determining the measures to report the impact of our programs and services. Number served seems to be an obvious measure – more than 200,000 meals per year served to seniors by Kitchen J through our meal site and home delivery programs. Retention is another – 83% of campers returning to Camp Sabra, the benchmark of a truly outstanding camp. Our influence is also measurable – according to our most recent benchmarking survey, 40% of our members reported gaining a broader perspective on Judaism as a result of their experiences at the J. Numbers don’t lie. We serve more members of the Jewish and broader St. Louis community than ever before – one million touch points annually. We’re serving people through hundreds of programs each year through the Helene Mirowitz Center for Jewish Community Life, our Family Center, our Early Childhood Center, Adult Services, SRA, Fitness and our-award winning Wilma and Roswell Messing Cultural Arts Department. We are the only community resource committed to the entire spectrum of the Jewish community; it’s our Jewish programming that will keep us vibrant and relevant for generations to come. Earlier this year, we created a book called Our Jewish Impact. In it are dozens and dozens of “Stories from the J,” testimonials from members, volunteers and program participants who have indeed experienced lasting effects – friendship, support, kindness, empowerment, inspiration, and even transformation as a result of joining a group, attending camp, seeing a play, meeting other Jewish families. Their words, not ours. Now that’s what we call impact.

…spirits lifted.

Music. Celebration. Inspiration.

6 | Jewish Community Center

Close your eyes. What do you hear? Is it the soulful chanting of the person behind you or the bubbly cheering of the person beside you? Every year Nishmah hosts a signature event – a Women’s Shabbat Retreat or, as was the case in 2013, The Journey – a pre-Passover evening which featured story, song and dance to get everyone energized and inspired for the holiday. Everyone came with open ears and an open heart and left with their spirits lifted. Music. Celebration. Inspiration.

Following an afternoon on the course, more than 250 guests came together to celebrate at a dinner which commemorated the vibrant history of the J and looked at the exciting future ahead. The evening’s festivities were emceed by Guy Phillips who also served as guest auctioneer for several items, including vacation packages, sports tickets and golf packages. Everyone is WelCome at the J About “The J”

The Jewish Community Center of St. Louis, founded in 1880, offers a variety of programs and services for the St. Louis Jewish community, and the community at large. The J provides educational, cultural, social, Jewish-identity building and recreational programming. Each year, the agency offers more than 250 programs and services designed to promote Jewish continuity and cultural heritage.
