2 From the Rabbi 3 Jewish Mystic Jam 4 Fitness Success 6 Cultural Arts January 16, 2014 is the 15th day 7 Nishmah of the Hebrew month of Shevat, on 8 Youth which we mark the holiday of Tu Rabbi Brad Horwitz B’shvat, the Jewish community’s 10 Fitness equivalent to Arbor Day or Earth 13 Sports, Rec & Aquatics Day. This is when we celebrate the birthday of the trees. We take time to place a spotlight on nature, God’s creation, and 16 Seniors the health of our planet. It always strikes me as odd that this holiday occurs during the middle of winter. It would seem 17 Development 8 Youth Theatre more appropriate to celebrate the birthday of the trees during 17 Tributes any other time of the year when nature’s beauty and bounty are more visible and plentiful. But maybe that’s exactly the 19 Board of point. Tu B’shvat forces us, at a time of year when we are more inclined to stay indoors and sip hot chocolate around Directors the fire, to remember that we are blessed with God’s creation 20 Looking Ahead and without trees our lives could not be sustained.
Celebration of Earth should be Year Round Affair
The shame of it is that every day the condition of our planet worsens and worsens. Over the course of history, humans have done a good job of working the land and taking advantage of the earth’s resources but in the process we have done a poor job of protecting those resources. The Torah teaches that those two things are not mutually exclusive. We read in Genesis that God put Adam and Eve on this earth to both work and to protect at the same time – lovdah u’lshomrah. God does not say the job would be easy, but if we don’t start paying more attention to the protection side of the equation our children and children’s children will be in serious trouble. Each of us makes personal choices that have an effect on protecting the environment. The cars we buy, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the bags we use, the trash we recycle, the charities we support, the politicians we vote for, and even the stocks we choose all make an impact. Along these lines, I am pleased to share that the J is exploring the possibility of installing an array of solar panels on the Marilyn Fox Building as well as both the Fitness and Arts & Education Buildings on the Staenberg Family Complex. These solar panels will help us generate our own electricity and make a difference in reducing our carbon footprint. We are hopeful that the necessary approvals for these important projects will come through. This Tu B’shvat, on the birthday of the trees, my prayer is that each of us finds a way to be shomrei adamah, protectors of the earth. As we work and enjoy all this wonderful world has to offer, so may we work to protect this world and its resources for future generations. Rabbi Brad Horwitz

Signature Small Group Fitness Success Story Training
Back from the Brink A J member shares her incredible, inspiring story A new year had begun and it was time for me to find a gym and get back in shape. I started touring gym facilities and interviewing trainers in the Chesterfield area. I wanted training, and my family was interested in finding an indoor pool and gymnasium for year-round use. After weighing (no pun intended) our options, I decided that the J was the place for us. I joined the J in spring 2013 and began attending some exercise classes. My teenage twins worked out with [personal trainers] Matt Kochera and Bryce Banaszynski to learn more about the fitness equipment and some specific routines. My youngest child (who is nine) loves to come with me to run on the track or hang out in the KidZone area. She can’t wait until she is old enough to learn how to use the equipment. Last May, I hired Matt Kochera as my personal trainer. During our first meeting we talked about my fitness goals – which at the time included losing fifty pounds I had gradually gained during the past three years, get back into my skinny jeans, increase my overall toning and basically get back into shape. I grew up an athlete, and the trauma surgeons who “rebuilt” me after the car accident told me it was easier to “rebuild” my limbs because of that fact. I began my fitness journey by meeting with Matt once a week and then coming to the J on my own one or two other days a week to work on the exercises that Matt had taught me. I felt weak, but Matt was always encouraging. I know I am not a patient person and I decided that we needed to quicken the pace. Matt has taught me so much about exercise physiology, nutrition and ways to optimize each workout.
Overcoming a near death experience On June 15, 2000, Ginny was involved in a head-on collision in North Carolina. She suffered life threatening injuries and was not expected to be able to walk again. She would need 12 surgeries over the next six years to repair immeasurable damage to several areas of her body, including her left arm, left ankle and leg, pelvis, right foot, right hip and head trauma. She was not expected to survive. She did. And over time and through grueling rehab.

Matt is nice, but he keeps me accountable! My whole family thinks the world of him. While on a family vacation in June, Matt stayed in contact with me via text messaging to make sure I was following the workout plan he had customized for my trip – talk about accountability (thanks, Matt). When I returned from the trip, I began to work out more frequently because I could see the results! I felt better, clothes were fitting better and I had more energy! Also, Matt showed me some exercises to help strengthen the muscles around an old college sports injury, a torn rotator cuff, so now I can play catch with my children without pain. Periodically, Matt and I discuss my fitness goals, progress towards achievement and any new goals I want to set. Since working with Matt, I have lost 25 pounds, dropped four dress sizes and am on track for rebuilding the muscle tone I lost after the accident! …continued on page 12.
Fitness Success Story
Ben Packman Proves He Has What it Takes Trainer and teen bond on way to fitness achievements The J can be traced back through generations of many St. Louis families, often making an impact on several lives. This may range from meeting a spouse, seeing friends in the health club every day, year after year, seeing your child raised through early childhood to day camps to BBYO and beyond or making a personal choice to better your life through fitness and wellness.
“I never worked out or wanted to until I started with Joe,” Ben recalls. “Now that Joe has taught me what to do and how to do it, I look forward to waking up and working out before school. Joe is a great trainer. He knows his stuff and is really concerned with what I wanted and what is best for me. We learned a lot about each other and I think we’ll keep in touch for a long time.”
It is with this last intention in mind that we introduce you to Ben Packman, a longtime J member, who even at only 18, has become a proud and motivating J fitness success!
As it is with most new clients, Joe set out to establish realistic long- and short-term fitness goals for Ben. Through performance assessments using muscular strength, muscular endurance and tests for flexibility, posture and various body measurements, the pair was able to keep an eye on Ben’s progress. Joe also was able to ascertain Ben’s strengths and weaknesses and build a fitness plan accordingly.
I have seen many changes in Ben not only with his physical appearance but in his overall self confidence — Personal Trainer Joe Ryan Ben’s parents “grew up” at the J, and his grandparents made the J a regular part of their lives – “at the really old J…” as Ben relates it. A member for his whole life, Ben says it just feels natural to be here. With the help of personal trainer Joe Ryan, Ben made it to the J often this past summer and now looks and feels better than ever.
By the time June rolled around, Parkway North student Ben and J personal trainer Joe began working out together twice a week. With all the measuring and testing and preparation, as time progressed, it was easy to see the fantastic progress Ben was achieving as he knocked down goal after goal. …continued on page 12.
Hesitant to start a fitness or training program, Ben had never worked out at the J or really had the desire to do so. In school, he played racquetball and you could occasionally find him shooting baskets in the gym. Eventually, not feeling comfortable with his body (sound familiar). Ben sought out some help, and Joe stepped forward. They quickly bonded, made a plan and forged ahead. It didn’t take long for Ben to adapt to the ways of the fitness center, resulting in more than 30 pounds lost, a new physique, and renewed confidence and energy.

Why is this Night Different? In 2012, the most produced play in the country was Matthew Lopez’ play The Whipping Man. In 2014, this play comes to the NJT stage. Set in a ruined Richmond, VA mansion at the end of the Civil War, we encounter the son of the family, Caleb DeLeon, who has been severely wounded in battle. In the ruined home, Caleb finds only two of the family’s former slaves, Simon and John. The DeLeons are a Jewish slave-owning family and their slaves were raised in the Jewish tradition. As timing would have it, the end of the Civil War in 1865 coincided with Passover. General Lee surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865, and the first night of Passover was April 10. Just a few days later, on April 14, President Lincoln was shot. He died the next morning. With all of these convergences, the three men share a makeshift Seder as they examine their past roles as master and slave, past and present and wrestle with what it means to be free. In the process, they uncover deeply buried family secrets. The central theme of Passover is freedom from bondage, but it is clear from Jewish tradition that slavery is considered not only a physical but also a mental state. The question, “How is this night different from all other nights?” is not only about the rituals of the Seder, but about the essential change that the children of Israel had to undergo to become free people, which is the ability to take responsibility for one’s own life and choices. While the story is not based on actual people, The Whipping Man is based in actual fact. There were many Jews living in the South at the time and most were very loyal to the Confederacy and their way of life, including owning slaves. The play’s Passover Seder and its celebration of freedom calls into question this curious practice of people who had been slaves, now owning slaves. Although the numbers are difficult to confirm, it appears that there were approximately 10,000 Jewish Confederate soldiers during the conflict. The Civil War was, at its heart, a battle within a family, and that is something that any family who sits down at the same table year after year can appreciate. But recalling our Passovers past, in both the most shameful and most triumphant moments in our history, will always remind us of the greatest gift of our freedom: our capacity to change. The production is directed by Doug Finlayson who directed last season’s Lost in Yonkers. It features J. Samuel Davis, Greg Fenner and Austin Pierce. It opens Thursday, January 30 and continues through February 16. Tickets are $37 $41 and can be purchased through the NJT Box Office, 314-442-3283 or at newjewishtheatre.org

For more than 18 years, Valerie Lenahan has been passionate about her health and well-being. She developed a love of fitness and has run with it ever since. She cannot remember a time when she didn’t exercise. In 1996, she ran her first marathon, which then led to six additional marathons and countless other races. After several years of helping friends Valerie Lenahan develop fitness programs and keeping them motivated, she decided to become an official certified trainer. She achieved her NASM Personal Trainer certification (National Association of Sports Medicine) in 2012 and joined the J staff in the summer of 2013. Valerie looks at training as a form of pampering. A good training session goes a long way in helping clients to get started on their fitness goals. ”Working out and taking care of your body is a gift to yourself. It takes time, dedication and commitment. When effectively practiced, the results will always impact your life positively. This is where a good personal trainer comes into play. A trainer will not only motivate you but will customize a plan to ensure that you are getting the most out of each and every workout.”

Self-Control: Ally or Antagonist?
Cathleen Kronemer
It’s that time of year again. There’s a chill in the air, a feeling of festive good will, and the anticipation of fragrant homecooked delicacies that we only enjoy at holiday time. For many of us, who adhere to a regimented nutrition plan all year long for the sake of our athletic pursuits, holiday meals often present a conundrum of sorts. We are so accustomed to a life of strict control in a variety of arenas; yet every once in a while, it feels good to relax our standards and treat ourselves. When that does occur, when we let our guard down, are we still in control?
The holidays are just one example of this bigger life query: what does it mean to be out of control? The answer certainly lies on a continuum, for it will feel different for every individual. At the core of the issue is the notion of some level of self-imposed rigidity, that which reins us in when we want to let loose. How does this manifest itself, and how much value should we place on the issue of control itself? There really seems to be a dichotomy when it comes to this term: the control we choose to impose upon ourselves, and that which society dictates. Speeding down the highway well in excess of the posted speed limit, with little or no regard for the safety of those around you, is generally considered a breach of control by society’s limits. However, the control we impose upon ourselves seems to have little rhyme or reason. Thus, the loss thereof can take on many different forms. Some of us may think our self-control processes have gone haywire if we have a single piece of Halloween candy; for others, control is not seen as having been totally abandoned unless we have consumed the entire bag of Fun-Size Snicker’s. It can be as innocuous as having to buy those two extra pairs of shoes, whether you can really afford them or not; or interrupting a friend who is in the middle of pouring her heart out to you, only to say something that is on your mind. Regardless of the scenario, we can all relate to the feeling of helplessness that occurs when we realize we have temporarily lost control over that which is important to us. These scenarios may tend toward the more extreme; yet at some point we must decide what feels right to us, and realize that loss of control is often merely a loss of perspective. Will the occasional holiday meal truly devastate our year-long adherence to an otherwise healthy lifestyle? Most likely it will not do nearly the damage we think it might. Being able to keep a reasonable perspective about such matters will enable us to plan for a few extravagances around the holidays, enjoy them, and return to our regular lifestyle with nary a backward glance.
…continued from page 10.
Participants will continue to weigh in every week to track ongoing progress, but will have additional measurements taken when the challenge begins, at the midpoint and at the end. Both individual and team winners for each of the three measured categories will be recognized. Inches lost will have the most emphasis during the program. Participants are encouraged to register as a full team, if it will provide the most motivation to get you started. If you’re looking for a team to join, we are here to help. Matt is knowledgeable, encouraging, keenly aware of the client’s attitude and potential for discomfort, and is willing to be flexible. For example, we have had to modify some exercises due to the nature of my injuries. Currently, I meet with Matt once a week to work on new exercises, and to always make sure that I am using “proper form” on the exercises in my routines. He has taught me that perfect and proper form is essential to reduce chances of injury and get the most out of a workout. In addition to our weekly session, I do a customized daily workout four additional days. Alright, if I am going to reach my new goals, I better get back to training – see you at the J! All the best, Ginny W. Frings, Ph.D.

“I helped Ben stay motivated. I helped keep him focused on his short term fitness goals,” Joe reflects. “I knew he had it in him. I saw it as my job to keep encouraging and pushing him to reach his fitness potential. He achieved his goals and I see his potential increasing all the time.”
Ben also had the help of a nutritionist. He learned to eat better and see how food plays an important role is achieving these goals. An ultimate goal of Ben’s is to build a set of “six-pack” abs. He continues to tweak his workout and eating habits as he continues his quest. Do you want to become a J fitness success? We can help. As the summer months pushed into fall, Ben hit the gym regularly. Not one to fret over early mornings, Ben would often be at the J before sunup and have complete workout before heading to school. He’s continued this practice into the school year. Joe’s impact is clearly seen in Ben’s proud accomplishments. “My expectations were met and exceeded. My initial goals were to lose weight and body fat and gain muscle and confidence. I accomplished all these goals with the help of Joe,” Ben proclaims. “My training experience has taught me a lot. I’m so glad I was able to do it. The added bonus was getting to know Joe and know that I have a mentor for life.”

St. Louis Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Accepting Nominations The St. Louis Jewish Sports Hall of Fame is now accepting nominations for the Class of 2014. The Hall of Fame is located in the halls of the J’s Staenberg Family Complex in Creve Coeur next to the locker rooms. The Hall of fame is managed by the J, and held the first induction in 1992. Nominations are being accepted for Jewish men and women who have made significant contributions or accomplishments in a sport or sports related field. These individuals must be of strong character and serve as a positive role model for sports and athletics within their community during their careers. Candidates must also have spent a portion of their life in the St. Louis metropolitan area. The St. Louis Jewish Sports Hall of Fame was made possible by the family of Isadore Beilenson and dedicated to his memory on July 12, 1992. Isadore was a remarkable athlete and leader who possessed a community-minded spirit. Individuals from the St. Louis area selected for induction serve as role models for the youth of today because of their achievements, outstanding character, leadership skills and commitments to the highest standards of sportsmanship. Along with the initial class of 1992, inductions have also occurred in 1995, 1997, 1998, 2005 and 2010. All nominations must be submitted on the official 2014 St. Louis Jewish Sports Hall of Fame nomination form available at jccstl.org. Complete induction criteria can also be found on the website. Nomination forms and supporting documentation must be submitted no later than January 15, 2014. All forms must be completed in their entirety for nominees to be considered for Hall of Fame status. A selection committee will evaluate all submissions. Recognition to the Hall of Fame may be awarded posthumously. Selected inductees will be announced in the spring. For a copy of the nomination form or for assistance in submitting a nomination, contact Fanchon Auman in care of the J, 2 Millstone Campus Drive, St. Louis, MO, 63146, fauman@jccstl.org or 314-442-3420.

Tracy Branson is on Deck at the Fox Pool The J is happy to introduce Tracy Branson, the Marilyn Fox Building’s new Aquatics Manager. She began in November and Tracy Branson brings more than 15 years experience in aquatics, including lifeguarding and swim lesson instructor when she was only 15 years old. She was a regular at her local pool in New Haven, MO, and now looks to make a splash at the J. Beyond the water, Tracy has been very successful in other sports. She was a high school state champion in both volleyball and basketball, and went on to play collegiate volleyball at Columbia College (MO). Keeping up with the competition theme, she also spent many weekends traveling and competing with the Gateway BBQ Store’s competitive BBQ team. When away from the pool, court or grill, she enjoys the outdoors, including skiing, hiking, camping and pretty much anything that gets her outside. Stop by and say hi or contact Tracy to schedule swim lessons or a swimming birthday party! She can be reached at 314-442-3495 or tbranson@jccstl.org

Extreme Ages Advance Youth Basketball Popularity Start Smart & Training League still Accepting Players
Just added!
With more than 1,100 youth basketball participants taking to the court this winter, the 2013-14 hoops season is gearing up to be the largest ever at the J. The Mac and Jeanette Brown Youth Basketball leagues continued to burst at the seams for a numbers of seasons. The Sports, Recreation & Aquatics (SRA) Department attributes this growth to both its youngest and oldest participants – and there is still time to join the fun!
Lillian & Al Ring Endowment Fund Provide New Life Saving Class
Learning the Fundamentals
In the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with First Aid class, participants will learn the skills necessary for the professional rescuer.
SRA Supervisor Chris Horan says, “With the addition of our nationally accredited Start Smart Basketball program, we have been able to attract three- and four-year-olds and their parents to the J to see how we teach basketball to young children.” “We want to keep the kids interested and loving basketball and see them progress to the Training League and then our new Kindergarten program,” Horan concludes.
High School League takes Root Coupled with the youngest participants, the J has found a niche with its oldest players the resurgence of the High School League. This league allows players in 9th –12th grade to continue playing without the commitment to their respective schools. It also allows high school friends (from different schools) to play together, who may not get the opportunity elsewhere. Natalie Lesko, SRA Associate Director says, “We had 26 teams last year and have nearly reached the same level for this season, which is fantastic. We have enough teams that we can group them by age and ability so we have some good competitive balance and great games.”
From the Bench Joey Boime, SRA Supervisor and head coach of two teams, says, “I’ve coached in several leagues around town and none compare to the fun, respectful and competitive atmosphere that has been created at the J. [Youth Basketball Committee Chair] David Steinbach offers great community leadership, along with the youth basketball committee. It is great to see coaches and players grow and flourish in our leagues over several years, not just in the game of basketball, but more important, in life.”
Completion gives you a two year certification in CPR/ AED for Adult/Child and infant, as well as standard first aid. The course blends lectures, videos and land-based demonstrations along with a written exam. Participants must attend the entire course and pass the written exam with at least an 80%. The class will be held at the Staenberg Family Complex on Sunday, January 26 from 9am-3pm for $60. To register, contact Kyle Fetick at 314-442-3296 or kfetick@jccstl.org
Get Involved There is still time to register for the Start Smart Basketball (begins 1/12) program and the Training League (begins 1/15). To get involved in the J’s youth basketball program, visit jccstl.org for rosters forms and registration information. Leagues fill quickly, so don’t miss out on the action!

Over 12,000 Meals Delivered Kitchen J continues feeding those in need
A volunteers (right) assist a participant in the Adult Day Center at the J.
The J has several volunteer opportunities throughout the agency. In Senior Programming alone, you can make the difference in someone’s day in several ways. From delivering meals to assisting at the meal site or interacting with our participants in the Adult Day Center – you can make a difference and everyone will feel the benefits! Along with programs for seniors, volunteers are needed for one-time special events, ongoing classroom assistance, assembling mailings and more. Volunteers should be over 16 (if volunteering alone). There are opportunities available at both J locations. If you would like more information or an application to become a J volunteer, visit jccstl.org or contact Mindy Goldfarb at 314-442-3164 or mgoldfarb@jccstl.org
Philip Kapnick, a 74-year-old retired physician, lives alone and can no longer drive or prepare meals for himself. Every day he waits for Jade Dicks, Assistant Coordinator of Senior Programs at the J, to deliver a nutritious hot kosher meal between 12 and 2pm. When asked why Phil uses the service he says, “I really couldn’t get a good meal like I do from the J, anywhere else. Being by myself, I don’t cook, so this meal is something I look forward to.”
Last year, Kitchen J served over 12,000 home delivered meals to nearly 100 homebound individuals at the Covenant House as well as out in the community. The home delivered meal program, funded in part by Mid-East Area Agency on Aging (MEAAA) and the Jewish Federation, enables homebound seniors to receive a hot, fullIn regards to food balanced meal which meets one-third of the adult deliveries, I really daily food requirement. It is often a critical step toward allowing seniors to remain in their own couldn’t get a good homes or community-based settings rather than meal like I do from entering a long-term care facility. By receiving the J, anywhere else. meals, seniors often prolong their independence, resulting in a better quality of life. Meal recipients are asked for a suggested donation of $4 per meal, which is used to offset costs. Over the past year, the actual average contribution has fallen significantly to $1.39 per meal due to the turbulent economic climate. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Linda Korn at 314-442-3143 or lkorn@jccstl.org
