Welcome back! We’ve missed you! Dear J Family, I hope you are experiencing continued good health as we enter our summer season. What a year this has been. I want to thank all of your for your support during this difficult and challenging time. And to those of you who chose to donate your dues during our closure, please know that we are grateful beyond words - and we hope to thank you in a more formal way soon. I would like to take this opportunity to thank two special groups of people - our staff and our board members who worked many hours to help us prepare to reopen safely. Our staff is to be commended for quickly responding to our closure by re-imagining programs and delivering them in new ways under tremendous stress and in a very short time frame. In fitness, in Early Childhood, in J Day Camps and Camp Sabra, in Adult Day at the J, in Sports, Rec and Aquatics, in our Cultural Arts, in our Jewish education programs and our 613 Catering... our staff worked very hard, separated from each other, to continue to serve our membership and our community. A generous group of board members, among them physicians, attorneys and critical thinkers, volunteered many hours to review our new protocols and procedures that would allow us to welcome members back to our buildings while complying with St. Louis County guidelines, which are different for nearly each space and program we offer. As we begin our reopening, we acknowledge that everyone will have a different comfort level with reentering our physical space. To that end, we are committed to providing our programs both in-person and virtually. As always, if you have questions or suggestions, please reach out to me or another member of our management team. We are still committed to excellence in programs and customer service, and will continue to serve you in this way for as long as our current public health concerns dictate. Thank you again for your membership, your donations, and your continued support of the J. I wish you a relaxing and healthy summer. Lynn Wittels President & CEO lwittels@jccstl.org

A NEW (VIRTUAL) REALITY

Thank You to Our Group Exercise Instructors & Personal Trainers! Whether from the garage, basement, studio, porch, by the pool, at the park, office or numerous other locales, they have kept our members on their toes and breaking a sweat. Maintaining this community of fitness has been a bright spot in an otherwise difficult time. Some were live, some were recorded, but all were challenging and all were welcome to work out with us from home.

Early Childhood Connections & Community Remain Strong During the Covid-19 closure, the J’s Early Childhood Center remained busy connecting with children and families virtually. We may have closed our doors on March 18, but these dedicated teachers and specialists never stopped working. Teachers immediately sprang into action. Facebook pages were created, Zoom meetings were scheduled and video phone calls became the new normal. Teachers spent hours on the phone speaking with students sharing how much they miss the kids. We believe the time talking with them was beneficial for all involved. Parents would schedule a video call for their child or classes met on Zoom two and sometimes three times a week. It was important that the kids see their teachers and classmates in order to maintain their community and to stay connected with their friends. The breadth of topics covered on Facebook posts proved amazing and endless. Faculty created posts, often live or recorded video for story times, sing-alongs, science and nature experiences and so much more. There was also Havdalah and Shabbat live recordings on Mondays and Fridays that were posted. Teachers posted Hebrew lessons and sign language lessons, as well as Baby Doll Circle Time. One class at SFC began a regular Zoom meeting during lunch a couple of times a week just for the conversation and to stay in touch. Every other week, a parent group began meeting via Zoom, without children, just to talk about child raising, connecting and to provide support for each other. These were facilitated by one of the toddler teachers.

“I have the privilege of performing Shabbat and Havdalah every week. It has been a special time of sharing with our EC kids and sharing my love of these Jewish rituals and blessings. I love to see who is watching real time and shouting out a hello,” says Jody Rubin, Co-Director of the SFC Early Childhood. For Shabbat, Jody tries to get the kids involved, asking for their input on songs and more. Jody continues, “I get extremely silly, way outside of my comfort zone, but I am doing it for the kids. While I haven’t gone viral, thank goodness, it is nice to see that we have close to 80 views each week.”

SFC Early Childhood Center Director Jody Rubin performs part of the Shabbat rituals live online for EC families.

Jody has also noticed how teachers pop in online to attend Shabbat and say hi to each other in the Facebook comments. “It shows we really miss each other, too!” she said. Debi Porfidio, ECC Director at the Mariliyn Fox Building, also has seen a shift in communication, but one that was truly embraced with love and affection. She says her staff has really embraced virtual learning. The teachers have been great at staying connected with children and families to ensure that everyone still feels like a part of the J community. Each classroom has done weekly zoom meetings to keep this connection strong.

“Our teachers and specialists have been sharing great virtual learning content daily, including cooking, judaics, yoga, music and science, as well as read alouds, dance parties and classwide show-and-tell. A highlight of this time was our families and teachers coming together on their own time to celebrate each other,” Porfidio says.

Teachers and parents at Fox have even reached beyond the screens to allow the children and staff to see each other, at socially allowable distances, even if only for the briefest of moments. One classroom organized a drive by parade to all of their students’ homes. Parents from another classroom organized a parking lot parade/party to honor their teachers at the end of the school year. There was even a Pre-K celebration in the J’s parking lot where the teachers made yard signs for their graduates, and remained at the J to cheer them all on as they drove by.

It has been incredibly rewarding to see our community come together in such a positive and kind way. I am in awe of my wonderful staff and amazing families and am so proud to be apart of this community. ~ Debi Porfidio

Director, Fox Early Childhood

As the J slowly reopens, it is so gratifying to see the smiles and eagerness of everyone to be together again. Our transition back to school has been incredibly smooth, and all kids are back now if they want to be.

A family comes to celebrate the end of the school year and their Fox Early Childhood teachers from the parking lot.

“We’ve tried to prepare the children for what their teachers would look like with masks on. On my Friday Shabbat video, I demonstrated putting on our protective gear. On the first day back, Ellen (her co-director) and I donned our masks, gloves, face shields and smocks with thermometers in hand to greet the children as they arrived. We had been anticipating this time for so long and it felt great to finally have contact with actual children again, recalls Rubin. “The kids, for the most part, were so glad to be back and see their teachers and friends again.”

As the children have been returning, Rubin fesls like they spent months preparing for their arrival. While learning as they go will remain necessary, what’s most important is creating a safe environment for the children and teachers. This includes everything from new procedures and protocols to more extensive cleaning and sanitizing. In preparation, both directors say the J’s Buildings and Grounds staff have been amazing in the preparation. jccstl.org | Zoom | Facebook

Program Highlight

613 Catering Creates Community Kitchen Meals

The J repackaged many of its services after being forced to close its doors on March 18, converting fitness and other programs from on-site to online. But hunger isn’t virtual, so 613 Catering, the J-owned kosher catering business headed by Chef Jon Rubin, created a family-style meal service that can feed our neighbors and feed our desire to help. Three times weekly, families can order a nutritious, delicious, VAAD-certified kosher dinner for pickup at the J. Additionally, community members may gift a meal (or many) to help those in need.

“We know that many people are feeling helpless right now. Maybe because they’re experiencing difficulties with health or finances, or maybe because they’re in a position to help but don’t know how. We think Community Kitchen Meals can fulfill many needs,” said Lynn Wittels, President and CEO of the J.

“It’s a great service for people who want a night off from cooking, for people who want to help fight food insecurity in our community, and quite possibly a lifeline for families who wouldn’t otherwise have a hot meal.” ~ Chef John Rubin Each meal feeds four and costs $60. All orders, requests and logistics will be handled by Robin Rickerman, 613 Catering Manager. Whether you want to purchase a meal for your family, donate a meal or request a gifted meal, call 314.442.3275. Robin will take the orders, process donations and assure our neighbors that delicious, hot meals are available for them. Because all transactions will be handled by phone, nobody will know which meals are paid and which are gifts. All donations are tax deductible and gifts of all amounts are welcome. The number of free meals available will be dependent on donations. “We are so happy to provide these meals,” said Chef Rubin. “It’s a great service for people who want a night off from cooking, for people who want to help fight food insecurity in our community, and quite possibly a lifeline for families who wouldn’t otherwise have a hot meal.” Top right: Chef John Rubin prepares fried chicken for 613 Catering Bottom right: Robin Rickerman puts together the meals to be picked up by customers of 613 Catering.

Staying Connected with our Community

During the last couple months when our programming was largely virtual, it was incredible how both new connections were created while others strengthened. We were able to expand our communities through Zoom, Facebook or other social media. Your comments during our closure were truly a source of inspiration!

We are happy to NOT FREEZE our membership during this time of the J’s closure in support of the J.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for continuing the group exercises online. It brings a sense of normalcy to my life and to many others. Very much appreciated!

I can’t thank you enough for the exercise instructors putting their classes out there. It brings a lot of sunshine in this dark time. I am so grateful for being a member of this wonderful community.

The J: Fitness Live in Your Home When St. Louis County and City issued stay-at-home orders in March, the J had to close its doors, but we didn’t shut down! Instead, our staff organized, innovated and found ways to bring the J home to you.

Our group ex instructors committed to moving their classes online. Since we closed, we’ve created a virtual group ex schedule of approximately 80 classes per week. All classes are offered online for free to all members via Zoom, Facebook Live and YouTube. Classes range from high intensity (P90X, Extreme Conditioning, etc.) to low intensity and restorative (Meditation, Yoga, Forever Fit, etc.) to conditioning and weight-based workouts (Circuit Training, Cardio Sculpt, etc.).

I just wanted to thank you and all the fitness instructors and trainers for all the classes they are teaching on online. I look forward everyday to doing a class and seeing my workout buddies. It helps me feel connected and keeps me moving. Thank you again.

~ Randee S. J Member

Our fitness staff knew it was important that people maintained their health and fitness while at home. Keeping active is a great way to boost your immune system, and everyone could use a boost right now. In their commitment to our members well-being, our staff immediately put together a plan for online engagement.

J Personal Trainers also rose to the call. Our training staff began recording their own at-home workouts, tips on how to correct your form while working out at home, cooking demonstrations, educational videos about how to maintain your health and much more. Our professional, knowledgeable staff took this opportunity to enhance your membership by sharing their knowledge in new and unique ways.

Trainer Andy Hayes Becomes J’s Online Fitness Guru Coronavirus may have closed our facilities, but it opened the creative juices of Andy Hayes, Fox Fitness Manager. As our fitness programs went virtual, the Branson-born Andy – he did a five-second tap dance at his first staff meeting – began brainstorming ways to keep our members active with daily challenges or deep thinking. But just as important: ways to keep them laughing. In addition to daily fitness challenges, Andy started a new series, Teach Me Something New, the title of which he calls a direct ripoff of The Bobby Bones Show’s Tell Me Something Good. In each episode, he focuses on something fitness or exercise related which impacts a person, but which that person may not know 9

Program Guide | Summer 2020 | jccstl.org

how or why it matters. Andy gave the series a theme song which he sings or hums...every episode. It’s that sense of humor which has propelled his videos to mustwatch status. So why the humor in fitness videos? Andy explains, “When I’m putting together a video, I’m thinking ‘What makes me laugh?’” Almost everything happens organically, on the fly. “If our members get a nice workout and also have a good time, it’s a success.” He hums, he dances, he jokes, he jogs, he can even do voices. He’s our Jack…ofall-trades. Except his name is Andy.

We know community is important for our members, and one of the largest communities at the J is our fitness participants. Because we knew we would need to be apart for an extended time, we wanted to preserve this sense of community by creating a place online for our members to be together. To do this, we created several Facebook Groups where members could gather by interest. Included in these groups was a dedicated place for Group Ex members and a dedicated place for our training clients. In less than one week, more than 1,000 people joined our Facebook Groups. In fact, our Group Ex group now has more than 1,100 members!

From the Trainers

“I didn’t realize until weeks later how much teaching online really meant to people. I’ve received messages from so many members thanking me for doing them and expressing how much they helped them through the craziness. I’ve had people reach out and give me specific compliments on how I teach and how it’s helped them physically and emotionally. The gratitude from and for the J members kept me going.” ~ Patty O.

J Group Exercise Instructor

Even as we’ve begun to reopen the J, we know that our behaviors may be forever changed due to this quarantine. Online community and digital opportunities to engage will continue to play a large part in our lives. The J is committed to being there for you – in person at our facilities and online as we continue to find new ways to engage. Join us!

“We were all thrust into the virtual world of training and coaching. Thankfully the J took quick action and created a social media platform for trainers and instructors to continue online. Jewish Women Get Stuff Done On March 16, the evening before her first work-from-home day, Larisa Klebe, Director of Nishmah, thought to herself: “What’s something I can do to engage the Nishmah community on a regular basis while we can’t gather for in-person programming, and which will provide inspiration, hope and comfort during this difficult time?” To answer this question, she turned to what she knows, history—more specifically, Jewish women’s history. Thus was born, Jewish Women Get Stuff Done (JWGSD), a Facebook live series about historical Jewish women. Each short video draws upon resources from the Jewish Women’s Archive, and covers a different historical Jewish woman. She picks subjects who are relatively less well-known (as-in, not Ruth Bader Ginsburg) because part of the goal is introducing the community to historical figures with whom they may not be familiar. She picks women from all different time periods, geographic regions and professional backgrounds in an effort to demonstrate the breadth of Jewish women’s history and inspire viewers with the sheer vastness of Jewish women’s accomplishments. While not every woman has a direct lesson to teach us about the COVID-19 pandemic, in a difficult moment like this it’s both empowering and uplifting to see examples of people in history who recognized injustice, or a need that wasn’t being filled, and did something about it, often navigating challenging circumstances in the process. Some featured women include Rose Schneiderman, an early 20th century labor activist who transformed the lives of American workers; Ray Frank, who made history in 1890 as the first woman to formally preach from a pulpit in the United States; and Gertrude Elion, a Nobel Prizewinning chemist who helped develop the first chemotherapy for childhood leukemia, the first effective anti-viral medication, AZT, and treatments for many other diseases. There’s something for everyone, which is also why Larisa believes it’s worthwhile and important for everyone, not just Jewish women, to know this history. As someone with a public history background, Larisa strongly believes that history holds the power to help us navigate the complexity of our everyday lives, to speak directly to current issues, and to embolden and empower us to take positive action. “Bringing it to Jewish women in particular, it’s rare we see ourselves represented in historical narratives. Why does this matter? As the saying goes, ‘I cannot be what I cannot see.’” In other words, representation matters, and when Jewish women are introduced to the long line of Jewish women change-makers from history, and start to see themselves as part of that history, it can expand their views on what they feel is possible for them. When it comes down to it, that is really the core of JWGSD. When Larisa first started the series two months ago, she had no idea how the series would be received; she wasn’t sure if videos about Jewish women’s history would capture anyone’s attention. Season 1, which comprised 21 episodes, has received nearly 1,500 views, and sparked some wonderful sharing and discussion. For instance, when she discussed Beatrice Alexander, founder Jewish Women Get Stuff Done of the Madame Alexander Doll Company, a couple people (Season 2) commented that they themselves had these dolls growing • Airs every Tuesday and Thursday at 10am up and even shared pictures of them with the group. • It lives in Nishmah’s Facebook group Similarly, the video about Lizzie Black Kander, author of facebook.com/groups/nishmah The Settlement Cookbook, received this great comment: “I got a copy of the cookbook as one of my wedding shower Nishmah Mini Salons: A Summer Series gifts. It’s falling apart!” Some of Larisa’s favorite comments • Wednesdays: June 24, July 8, July 22, August 12 • 7:30-8:10pm are from those who learned about someone for the first • Facebook Live & Zoom (registration required) time through one of the videos. • Free, more info & register at nishmah.org and Nishmah’s FB Group 11

Hollywood "Zooms" to the J with Resistance While Hollywood slowed to a crawl, the show must go on! In response to the shuttering of theatres, both live and film, some studios began providing new release films on-demand, allowing viewers at home to see a brand new film from the comfort of their own home while maintaining the at-home quarantines that were mandated at the time. One of these films was Resistance, starring Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Zombieland, Now You See Me) and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz. It tells the story of an aspiring Jewish actor (Eisenberg) who joins the French Resistance to save children orphaned by the Nazis. It is inspired by the life of Marcel Marceau. In helping to promote the film, and in recognition of the subject matter, both director and lead actor made themselves available to Jewish Community Centers across the U.S. for dedicated Zoom webinars. While working from home, Zelda Sparks, Director of Cultural Arts, was able to bring some of this Hollywood magic to our very own J. Members were provided a link to rent the film in order to view it prior to the online webinar. They were also able to register for the private Q&A session with the star and director. On Thursday, May 7, nearly 200 St. Louisans watched as Dan Reich, Curator & Director of Education of the St. Louis Holocaust Museum and Learning Center interviewed Jonathan Jakubowicz and Jesse Eisenberg, all from the comfort of their own homes. Jakubowicz shared his personal connection to the story, as more than 400 members of his family perished during the Holocaust. Eisenberg had his own personal connections. These included his family being from the same region as Marceau, his mother working as a professional clown, bringing his portrayal of Marceau even closer to home, and he also lost family in the Holocaust. Following the interview, the actor and director answered questions directly from the audience.

Garden of Eden Experiencing Record Growth In one week, the J’s Garden of Eden harvested 112.5 pounds of light-weight produce - kale, radishes, collards, lettuces and chard. A record high for spring crops grown in the Garden. This bounty was donated, as usual, to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry to support its mission of alleviating food insecurity in our region. The J thanks all staff and volunteers who have dedicated their time this spring to tend to the garden and who helped ensure that, during this time of uncertainty, we could still help provide fresh, healthy food to our community.

Volunteer Opportunity

Interested in helping out in the garden? We have several opportunities available and they are not pertinent to when the J is open. If you would like to join and become a volunteer, contact Stephanie Rhea at srhea@jccstl.org or 314.442.3164. jccstl.org | Zoom | Facebook

Camp Sabra Family Getaways: A New Way to Experience Sabra’s Magic Families and campers will experience Camp Sabra in a new way this summer: all-inclusive Family Getaways. These Getaways are filled with activities, evening programs and Sabra magic – all in an appropriately distanced environment adhering to health and safety guidelines. During a summer when plans have been upended and out-of-state vacations may not be possible, Sabra Family Getaways provide families with a much-needed local and safe option. “We know that families are in need of summer plans that fit into our new normal,” said Terri Grossman, Director of Camp Sabra. “We believe that Sabra Family Getaways will be a great way to maintain health and safety and have outdoor fun at the same time.” Participating families with have their own living spaces – a mix of duplexes and cabins – and will (almost always) rotate through activity areas one family at a time to minimize contact with others outside their family unit. Families will be assigned their own tables in the dining hall, participants will have their own lifejackets for the week, area activities will be cleaned in between families and living spaces will be sanitized in between Family Getaway weeks. While the set-up will feel different from traditional camp, Sabra staff are dedicated to making the week as amazing as possible. Families will experience many Sabra-favorite activities, including skiing, paddle boarding, archery, the high ropes course, canoeing, arts & crafts, fishing and much more! “We know that a summer at Camp Sabra is special,” said Grossman. “In our fifty-year history, there has never been a summer where we didn’t have some version of camp on our peninsula. Family Getaways will allow us to continue that tradition and will allow families to make their own camp memories this summer.” We look forward to welcoming families to the Staenberg Peninsula this summer. Sabra Family Getaways run weekly from July 5-31. For more information about this opportunity, please visit campsabra.com 13
