Letter from the Chairman of the Board

As I reflect on the past year, I am so proud of the remarkable achievements and progress that the agency has made. Throughout the year, our dedicated team worked tirelessly to advance our mission of enriching lives, promoting inclusivity, and creating meaningful Jewish experiences.

We strengthened our connections with the community through various outreach initiatives. From the amazing Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration, on the occasion of Israel’s 75th anniversary, to the large crowds at the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival and everything in between, the J served as the town square for the community to come together. These efforts allowed us to better serve our community and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Our programs continued to grow and evolve to ensure service to the entire community. Whether it was the record-breaking award winning New Jewish Theatre, our teens traveling to Israel for the Maccabi games, the new Youth Theatre musical revue program, the new ABCs of Shabbat for young families, or the hundreds of campers that enjoyed another year of adventure at Camp Sabra, we continued to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

I am pleased to report that we maintained financial stability and even experienced growth in some areas. This success is a testament to the dedication of our staff, the support of our donors and partners, and the effectiveness of our financial management strategies.

It goes without saying that this past year our Jewish community was faced with unimaginable challenges as a result of the horrific terrorist attack in Israel on October 7, the continuing war in Gaza and a spike in antisemitism. I am so proud that the J rose to these challenges and became a haven for our community to gather, providing support, education, comfort, and a sense of unity during these uncertain times. Now, more than ever, the J’s importance is critical for the community.

As we look ahead to the future, we are excited about the possibilities and opportunities that lie before us. With the continued support of our generous donors and the dedication of our amazing staff, I am confident that we will build on our successes and achieve even greater impact in the years to come. 2024 will bring much excitement as we embark on a capital campaign and transform our facility at the Marilyn Fox Building in Chesterfield.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge Lynn Wittels. Lynn’s passion and dedication over her 18 years at the J have been pivotal in the agency’s success. When Lynn joined the J we were operating with a significant operating loss. Under Lynn’s leadership the J now boasts a healthy net operating surplus annually. Thank you, Lynn!

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to our agency’s success over the past year. Your passion, dedication, and commitment have been instrumental in driving positive change and making a difference in the lives of others.

Thank you for your continued support.

In 2023, we implemented new sensory intervention programs to support children with sensory dysregulation and promoted continued inclusion in the classroom. We established a new professional developmental protocol that allows our dedicated educators to attend high quality early childhood conferences and training from across the country. We are proud to support our educators in our mission to provide exceptional education to our youngest leaners.

Day Camp & Camp Sabra

In 2023:

1,416 campers

92% reported that camp created a sense of belonging and a positive experience

$299,384 awarded in scholarships and discounts

Camp gives children the gift of:

• A new circle of friends

• A place where foolishness is embraced, and bullying is erased

• A break from social media and computers

• Young adults as role models for working on a team with fairness and empathy

Adult Day at the J

In 2023:

7,500 days of service provided

100% satisfied with the quality of the program

We are proud to offer exceptional programming for seniors with cognitive and physical challenges as well as young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through Adult Day at the J. This year, we expanded our music therapy program by adding a new staff member. This allowed us to provide additional sessions and events.

Cultural Arts

In 2023:

96 families participated in Youth Theatre productions

New Jewish Theatre received 24 nominations and 6 awards by the prestigious St. Louis Theatre Circle.

1,800 people attended the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival’s three headliner author programs

The J has a rich tradition of providing Jewish cultural opportunities as well as fine art productions and events to the community. This broad array of programming ensures that we are providing something for everyone and allows us to celebrate our members and community in the spirit of the Jewish tradition.

New Jewish Theater hosted a groundbreaking performance of Into the Woods with 1193 total attendees and one the largest casts ever with 13 actors. This and other outstanding performances earned NJT a record 24 St. Louis Theatre Circle Award nominations and six awards in a field of esteemed competitors such as The Muny and Stages.

Jewish Life and Nishmah

In 2023:

5,000+ pounds of produce grown in Community Garden of Eden donated to Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry

400+ attendees from across the US joined us for our largest ever in-person Songleader Boot Camp national conference.

We offered 14 events for families with 389 unique families in attendance. 40% of the families attended three or more programs and over 50% attended more than one program.

7 teens went to Israel to participate in the Maccabi games.

Everyone is welcome at the J! Our history, rich in Jewish tradition, is the foundation of the work we do. Today’s Jewish community seeks relevant Jewish education and activities. Our innovative programming is designed to ensure a vibrant and thriving Jewish community for generations to come.

The Hamsa Wellness Community, previously known as Sharsheret Supports STL, had over 1060 touch points through cancer education, awareness, health and support activities. The new Strength Over Cancer program was launched and filled to capacity.

Our Community’s Town Square

More than 2,500 people, a standing room only crowd, came together in solidarity after the tragic events of October 7, 2023.

Over 750 attendees celebrated the 75th anniversary of Israel and participated in creating a labyrinth art installation commemorating this important milestone.

We were proud to host the annual JPro Awards where we recognized professionals in the Jewish Community for their service and dedication.

J Associates

In 2023:

443 members

$202,798 raised at Fabulous Feud Live to support the J’s programs

Our amazing women’s auxiliary, J Associates, makes a tremendous impact on the work we do at the J. Through their financial support, advocacy, and activities, they help to ensure the success of our programs. They are the only women’s auxiliary that we know of at a Jewish Community Center and we couldn’t be more grateful for them!

Funding from the J Associates helped to support Adult Day at the J, Youth Sports, J Day Camps, Early Childhood Education, Camp Sabra, Nishmah, Cultural Arts, and more. These departments then used the funds for scholarships and programs. Impacting ages from infants to the elderly, the J Associates have contributed to important programs across the agency.

Fitness and Wellness

In 2023:

7,148 classes provided for our members

13,873 unique members utilized our fitness and aquatics centers

1,881 trainings were conducted for young adults with disabilities through our Life Enrichment program

Fitness and wellness are key to a fulfilling, healthy life. The J’s fitness experience brings our community together while providing exceptional service. We continue to expand our offerings to meet the needs and preferences of our members. We added a series of Senior Friendly group exercise classes for our more mature fitness enthusiasts. It is wonderful to see so many in our community relying on the J as their fitness and wellness partner.

Sports, Recreation & Aquatics

In 2023:

4,796 athletes and volunteer coaches participated in programs.

176 unique sports and rec programs were offered.

Hundreds played pickleball at the J.

Sports & Recreation and Aquatics at the J continue to offer quality options for our community. Pickleball continues to be a highly sought-after option for members. We are proud to get our more “seasoned” community moving with our annual Senior Olympics.

Commitment to the Staff

In 2023:

We committed to complete yearly reviews earlier in 2023 so that annual increases could be applied in early 2024.

We committed to action items found on the Pulse Survey, which is a quarterly survey aligned with the Leading Edge Survey. One example of the feedback we received was that staff desired to connect more socially. In service of that feedback, one event we created was an inter-agency kickball game with the Jewish Federation.

Our staff is the lifeblood of the work we do. These talented and commited professionals love the J and work tirelessly to ensure our members have the best possible experience when the are at work. We are beyond grateful for their dedication and commitment.
