SUCCESS STORY____________________
RAMON BAHL BREAKS THROUGH WITH J FITNESS The J: How long have you been a member of the J? Ramon Bahl: I joined in December, 2014.
strength was very low. Chase did a great job explaining how the body loses weight. He also explained the importance of not just losing weight but also developing and gaining strength, especially in your back and hips – areas that you may not consider when trying to build strength. The J: Did working with a personal trainer meet or exceed your expectations? How so? RB: In the first seven months of working with Chase, I lost an additional 30 pounds. I also increased my stamina and strength noticeably. Chase has done a great job of working with me on my cardio and strength training as well as showing me flexibility and mobility exercises. He also helps me with diet and nutrition, explaining that it is more than just counting calories.
The J: Had you worked with a personal trainer before? RB: I had never worked with a trainer before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I signed up for eight sessions as a test run. I planned on meeting with a trainer once a week and working out on my own one to two times a week. The J: When did you start working with Chase Kaczmarek (Personal Trainer at the Marilyn Fox Building)? RB: I met with Chase in early December 2014 and he did an evaluation and took measurements. Even though I had lost some weight on my own, I was pretty heavy. Also, my overall
The J: What goals and accomplishments did you set and then achieve or move towards during your training experience? RB: When I started on my own in August of 2014, I didn’t really have a goal. When I began working with Chase in December of 2014, I set a goal to lose 30 more pounds by June of 2015 (50 pounds total). I wasn’t sure it was possible but I hit that goal. Since then, I have been able to maintain the weight loss and add some strength while still working with Chase.
Fitness & Wellness
The J: Please describe the circumstances that led you to the J’s fitness center? And to seek out a personal trainer? RB: In August of 2014, I decided I needed to get in better shape. On my own, I started eating better and doing some exercise (1-2 times/week). I lost about 20 pounds but then plateaued in November. I joined the J to have a better way to exercise during the winter but I knew that if I didn’t have a trainer, I would not go regularly.
The J: What goals do you still have and what are you doing to work towards them? RB: I would like to lose an additional 10 pounds or so and tighten my core. The J: What is your current (more or less) regular weekly fitness routine? RB: When I first starting working out at the J, I attended two to three times a week, once-a-week session with Chase and one to two times on my own. Now, I work with Chase twice a week and on my own two to three times a week. To begin your own success story, get started with a J personal trainer today. Phase training is The J’s exclusive path through different levels and “phases” of training. Designed to appropriately categorize and efficiently advance a person’s level of fitness from where they are to where they want to be. There are three different phases: Weight Loss, Fitness and Performance. They represent different styles of training for more specific goals, which may include adding muscle, increasing strength, increasing cardiovascular endurance, or a combination.
Weight Loss Phase (Formerly 6 Week Body Transformation)
The Weight Loss Phase is about getting going, learning proper technique, gaining confidence and seeing results. Classes are designed for new exercisers with a weight loss goal of at least 15% of their body weight. These small groups start with the basics and teach proper form and movements. Groups are set up in circuit fashion to keep participants moving, while rotating muscle groups and energy systems in a way to stay within their target heart rate zones to burn fat most effectively. Participants move in the lower to middle heart rate levels and intensity. Sessions are intended to be completed without intense exhaustion or lingering effects, but provide a feeling of achievement and goal advancement.
Fitness & Wellness
Private Small Group Personal Training (4-6 people)
Small Group Phase Training________________18 yrs & older What is it?
Fitness Phase
The fitness phase is designed for the participants who have met their weight loss goal and are looking for a little something more but nothing over the top. These groups are designed to start teaching more complex movements that may use more than one muscle group at a time. These trainings will be where the body really starts to get stronger and leaner. Participants will be pushed harder and further than they were in the Weight Loss phase. This will include heart rate-based training and will take the person into a higher heart rate level for a longer duration of time. Participants will be moving between the middle heart rate and intensity levels of exercise. These trainings will leave the participant feeling accomplished and motivated for the next session.
Performance Phase
Performance is the highest level of fitness training in the Phase track. Training is designed to push the body to its limits and improve all aspects of fitness. Participants will be pushed through middle and high intensity levels, with workouts based on monitoring heart rate and/or traditional boot camp style workouts. At this level, participants know their body and limits, needing the program for accountability. Workouts will include some of the most complex movements in fitness and will be under the close eye of a trained professional to ensure safety and provide encouragement. These trainings should leave participants exhausted, and left without much energy. These groups are for those looking to push their boundaries.

Winter/Spring 2017
My name is Jessica Varner. I am a Medical Social Worker in the Emergency Department at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. I have been married to Benjamin Varner for 18 years and have two boys (ages 9 and 13). In 18 years, we have moved 20 times (ah the life of a military spouse), made it through my husband going to Iraq two times, both of us completing Bachelor’s and Master's degrees, and countless other adventures. We moved to Missouri seven years ago and have been members of the J for approximately 1.5 years. I was very athletic growing up, playing Junior Olympic and collegiate volleyball. After I got married I maintained my fitness by running. As life happened and more stress came I stopped working out, and eventually became more and more unhealthy. When my husband did his first tour to Iraq I decided I would surprise him when he returned by having lost weight and being healthier. I joined a gym and maintained that membership for 15 years. When he came home I maintained the weight loss for a while but slowly my eating habits changed and I stopped going to the gym as frequently. Eventually, I stopped working out altogether. I now realize I didn’t maintain my success because I didn’t change my view on health and eating. Fast forward to about two years ago when we toured the J for the sole purpose of signing our sons up for summer day camp. I was shocked at the professionalism of the staff as well as the amenities. Shortly after touring the J, I decided to stop my membership at the previous gym and work out at the J. Soon after joining, I became interested in the 6 Week Body Transformation program. My work schedule also changed, making me available Tuesday through Thursday mornings. After meeting with Malinda Walker (personal trainer) I was excited to get started in her group. She took a broad approach when looking at my fitness goals by asking about physical goals and nutrition, both current and past. She was interested in my history
as an athlete as well as my current fitness goals. I worked with Malinda on Tuesdays and Thursdays and with Paige Buchanan (personal trainer) on Wednesdays. When I first started working out with them I could not run a full lap around the track and could not get through a workout without having to stop and rest. They encouraged me even when I wanted to quit. After a few sessions with them, I realized they believed in me. They pushed me to do things I didn’t think I was capable of. They believed in my abilities when I didn’t believe in myself. Their belief in me gave me the courage to try new things and work harder. They became trainers and cheerleaders. I needed both in my life at that time.
with a dietician and started a healthy eating program. I changed the way I view food. It is no longer a way to deal with stress, but rather it is fuel for my life. I also changed my mindset regarding my workouts. I no longer default to “I can’t do that.” I now use the belief that the trainers have in my abilities to fuel belief in myself. I am now mindful that this is a journey, not a sprint. These are not temporary changes, rather a lifestyle change.
"Jessica is awesome to work with. She shows up for every session ready to work with a great attitude. Everyone has obstacles to their weight loss and fitness goals – be it family, work, holidays, celebrations, or others reasons. Jessica has stayed dedicated and focused on her goals and the results speak for themselves!"
– Paige Buchanan, one of Jessica’s Group Training instructors
Due to work scheduling again, I was led to John Slay, another trainer who leads a group. He agreed to let me join his group two times a week, which motivated me even more because it was another example of their belief in me. John is an amazing teacher and has an insane amount of patience. He always takes the time to explain and demonstrate an exercise, as well as encourage me to try. His patience and knowledge gave me the courage to push myself harder. I went from not being able to run a lap around the indoor track to being able to jog a 5K without stopping. I have been both encouraged and inspired by the trainers as well as the people in the groups. The people I work out with have become like a second family. Their drive and determination push me to continue to fight for my health.
and inches lost; it is also about quality of life. I can now walk upstairs without fearing I might fall. I can get off of the floor without holding onto anything. I can chase my kids around the neighborhood. I can confidently walk into a room with my head held high and know it doesn’t matter what others think of me because I know how hard I am working! I have not reached all of my goals. I still hope to lose more weight, continue to increase my fitness level, and maintain my healthy eating. Because of the encouragement I have received from the trainers I have worked with, professionalism of the teachers of group classes, and support I get from my family and the people I work out with, I know I can attain my goals. This journey has not been easy but it has definitely been worth it!

“I LOVE this girl! She comes in with such positivity you can just tell that she is ready to work and push herself. Jessica is the ideal client because she isn't – John Slay, another of Jessica’s Group Training instructors afraid to try something new, and she isn't afraid to fail because with hard work she will eventually succeed. She had the best mentality about weight Since June 5, 2016, I have lost 54 pounds and from the June October I have lost 20 inches. I am down four pant sizes and loss and exercise. She is such a great example of to five shirt sizes. Though weight loss is great and I love that I how you can change your life in a positive way.” can fit in smaller sizes of clothing this is not just about weight

Throughout my journey, I have always made my goals about other people. I realized finally that in order for me to be successful, I had to make these changes for ME. I had to change my relationship with food. I had to change my view of myself. I had to come to a place where I was physically and emotionally healthy. In June, one day my trainer was sick and Paige offered to let me attend her boot camp. At first I declined, but while walking the track something clicked – I was tired of telling myself “I can’t.” I went back and did the boot camp. It was hard but I made it. That day I decided to change for me. I took the determination I had in boot camp and decided to make drastic changes. I met Register online at jccstl.org 45

Write ON! empowers one to find their voice and express it through writing, inspiring change in their world. EVERYONE HAS A STORY: Write On! is a guided discussion group facilitated by Pam Wilson. Writing is used to process an individual’s current situation allowing someone to move forward and/or make choices about their life story. The value of meeting in a group and reading out loud gives insight to someone’s thoughts and feelings. Others hear what you are writing which holds you accountable and asks you to be honest. Write ON! empowers people to find their voice and express it through writing in a thoughtful and safe way. SFC Tue 1/24 7:30-9pm Private Home Wed 1/25 12-1:30pm
