MESSAGE FROM 2014 JCI PRESIDENT Dear JCI Members, Greetings and best wishes… It gives me immense pleasure to communicate to you through your inauguration souvenir. I am sure that by now you all are ready for a colorful inaugural ceremony. My prayers and best wishes for the team 2014 and hope that the inaugural ceremony will turn out to the best of its kind and serve as an opportunity to strengthen your bondings. My special congratulations to all members, who put in their untiring efforts to make it an ever-memorable one. We all know that if the first button of the shirt is put wrong all the subsequent buttons automatically go wrong, so let us take the first step carefully and correctly. I feel when we plan for an IMPACT; JCI members should start from the very first step by analyzing needs of the community and from there formulate solutions, to address the root causes of those challenges, faced by our communities. For creating sustainable impact, we also should join our hands with like-minded people. Let’s “Unite to Impact”. Wish you all the very best. God bless. Shine Bhaskaran 2014 JCI President

MESSAGE FROM INCOMING PRESIDENT It is a great honor to serve as the 52nd President of JCI Kota Kinabalu chapter. For the past few decades, JCI has been developing leaders, growing communities, and advancing societies around the world. Being the voice of young active citizens, JCIKK will continue to build on the vision by growing ourselves, growing others, and growing our community – Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. As the most friendly city in the country, Kota Kinabalu is a world-class city that is a key influence in nature and natural beauty. Living in KK, we have a great sense of pride and a great sense of responsibility to contribute to the wellness of our city year-after-year. JCIKK has a strong vision for the future and an ambitious plan for 2014. This year, our focus will be to grow leaders by providing quality personal and professional development programs. As a result, we will create an environment where members will: • • •

Build lasting “influential relationships” Contribute to improve and grow our city Continuously learn to lead down a path of lifetime success

As a membership-driven organization, we are only as strong as our members. We cannot go down the path of personal growth without helping grow those around us. Heading down this path requires commitment, dedication and hard work. However, the result will be a life of fulfillment and success. Of course, we will have some amusing moments along the way. I am looking forward to head down this path with you, not only this year, but in many years to come. Feel free to reach out to myself or any of the board members to get involved, provide feedback, or just connect. Together we will grow ourselves, grow others, and grow our city – Kota Kinabalu. Jeff Lu 2014 President JCI Kota Kinabalu

MESSAGE FROM ORGANISING CHAIRPERSON Welcome to our Installation and Awards Banquet 2014. It is a great challenge and an eye-opening experience to have been selected to be the organising chair lady for this event. Challenge because I was required to cope with and to say no to so many awesome ideas proposed by the ever-so-happy-to-always-volunteer KK Jaycees due to the scope and time constraint that we had. Eye-opening experience because I had no idea that our KK Jaycees are able to up their game exponentially. We all have grown to be more understanding towards one another, more disciplined, more organized, all as ONE team. I would like to take this opportunity to put on record that KK Jaycees have leveled up and I want to say a huge thank you to our team who has not only managed their own parts but made great team effort! Also a huge thank you to all the sponsors, either by money, time and/or effort - you have made this possible for us. A special thanks to our Guest of Honour for the evening for taking the time off to attend this event. It is our honour to have you with us this evening. To all our guests for this evening, thank you for coming and we hope that this event will be a memorable one for you. God bless. Wendy Chan Organising Chairperson 52nd Installation and Award Banquet JCI Kota Kinabalu

JCI KOTA KINABALU IN THE BEGINNING The idea of a Junior Chamber germinated back in 1959. The “3 Musketeers” who closely associated with the formation of the first chapter in Jesselton (now known as Kota Kinabalu) are Mr. Fauzi Pate, Mr John Hii and Mr Michael Chen. Mr. Fauzi Patel who was with Sabah Times then was on a study tour to Australia, recalled being hosted by Nombour Junior Chamber, Queensland and motivated John Hii, manager of MIS Jardine Waugh Co. was on a training course in London. He was registered by his colleagues to attend the 17th JCI World Congress in Paris. He was impressed with the friendliness, warmth and charm. Mr Michael Chen, Manager of Cathay Cinema then, was contacted by both Fauzi & John and started recruiting members. It was only in late 1961 when Mr Lee Choon Fatt appeared that there was some momentum in recruitment. Together with another 3 members (Mr. Robert De Souza, Mr John Su and Mr George Chin) a meeting was held in January 1962. On July 1962, the chapter was formed and the 1st Organization meeting was held at Jesselton Recreation Club. 17 members were present, Fauzi Patel, John Hii, Michael Chen, Lee Choon Fatt, Robert De Souza, John Su, Teo Geok Seang, Yuen Peng Cheng, Mak Sin Loong, Ho Fook Kee, Lim Kim Jee, Lim Beng Aun, John Foo, Spencer Lim, Peter Soong and Liew Yun Choi. The Jesselton Junior Chamber was born with the following protem officers; Acting Chairman – John Hii VP (External) – George Chin VP (Internal) – Lee Choon Fatt Secretary – Fauzi Patel Treasurer – Michael Chen Directors – Teo Geok Seng, Ho Fook Kee, Yuen Peng Cheng, Mak Sin Loong The Inauguration General Meeting held on November 1962 elected the Board of Directors for 1963 President – George Chin VP (External) - Lee Choon Fatt VP (Internal) – John Hii Secretary – James Yap Treasurer – Foo Tiang Keng Board members – Lawrence Liew, Lim Su Seng, Michael Chen, Fauzi Patel Syabas to the birth of JCI Kota Kinabalu (known as Jesselton Junior Chamber) and all its initiators. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step as the saying goes. Through thick and thin, JCI Kota Kinabalu has grown from the belief that “A winner never quits, a quitter never wins”. Highlights of JCI Kota Kinabalu: Sponsored JCI Intan in 1975 Sponsored JCI Tanjung Aru and JCI Penampang in 1980 Hosted National Convention in 1978, 1982, 1996, 2005. Signed sisterhood pacts with JCI Manila(1981), JCI City, Singapore(1983), JCI Lu Chu, Taiwan(1985), JCI Angeles City(2009). A permanent Secretariat in 1985 Today, JCI Kota Kinabalu is celebrating the installation of the 52nd President. Through the years, members of this chapter excel in their respective professions. JCI Kota Kinabalu plated an important role toward making a better person in their community and thus making a better person in this world.
