THE ART OF NATION BUILDING

..............COLOURFUL MOMENTS OF UNITY

PRIZE PRESENTATION CEREMONY 5 November 2016

Guest Of Honour: YB Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau Minister Of Science, Technology And Innovation Malaysia

Jointly Organised By

2nd edition

Patriotism and one’s love for their country is not just about flying the national flag once a year. This physical and traditional action may no longer be effective amongst our younger generation when it comes to nurturing and inculcating love and loyalty to their home country. Instead, alternative innovative approaches are required to engage the young nowadays to sow in them this ‘patriotic seed’. Therefore, this programme is aimed at re-introducing the young to the country’s golden olden times and awakening their sense of belonging towards their home country by re-enacting and expressing the past pride in their artwork. Through this expression of art, history can then become a practical reference for creating a better future in our country. The programme is aimed; • To cultivate a sense of nationhood and belonging through art • To encourage patriotism and instill loyalty into the hearts of young people by creating awareness about national values through the expression of art • To create awareness to the diverse race, ethnicity and cultures of our society especially in our youth • To further create an understanding of this diversity and thereby acceptance and respect for each other (I) NATION-WIDE ART COMPETITION An art competition was carried out over the month of July and August where students from Upper Primary (Primary 4, 5 and 6), Lower Secondary (Form 1, 2 and 3) and Upper Secondary (Form 4, 5 and 6) all over the country participated. The art competition was themed ‘Hari Jadi Malaysia’. There was an astounding response from the school students and the competition attracted a total of 8283 entrIes. The art pieces were then judged based on the accuracy of their factual contents, originality and creativity as well as the brief synopsis of the art work submitted. (II) NATION BUILDING ART EXHIBITION (12 Sept – 4 Oct) 400 art pieces from the pool total of 8283 were then shortlisted. These selected pieces of artwork as well as the synopses were then exhibited in high crowd turn over area for a few weeks which included locations such as City Mall, Centrepoint, Suria Shopping Mall, Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Gaya Street (Jesselton Hotel). This programme is jointly organised by the Sabah State Education Department (JPN), the Society Empowerment & Economic Development of Sabah (SEEDS), the Federation of Sabah Chinese Women Associations (FSCWA) and JCI Kota Kinabalu.

Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia YB Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau

Firstly let me express how excited I am to be invited as the Guest of Honor for this meaningful programme. I understand that this year marks the second installments of this programme and that it has been extended to a national event and not limited to just the state of Sabah, which is attune to its aims and objectives as a nation building programme. Malaysia is one of the few countries in the world that is home to such a large collection of cultures and faiths that are peaceful and progressive. We are truly unique, but this should never be taken for granted. In so many other countries, an abundance of cultures existing in close proximity to one another breeds conflict. Of course we too have in the past, seen efforts of certain irresponsible parties threaten cultural harmony in Malaysia, by inciting violence between our races. However thankfully, as a nation with a modern vision we have generally protected the harmony we all enjoy, and for this to continue, we have to involve our youth in ways such as this. I would like to congratulate ‘The Art to Nation Building’ programme, and its organisers for its continued success and expansion. It remains a significant and timely effort to boost patriotism amongst school children throughout the country. It is never too late to encourage our youth, and the future leaders of Malaysia to embrace unity and understanding in diversity, and I think this initiative serves to do just that. Congratulations to all the winners!

Minister of Youth and Sports, Sabah

YB Datuk Haji Tawfiq Bin Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Abu Bakar Titingan The Future is Now...Youths are the foundation of any country in the world. With that in mind, it is important for us to ensure that youths are brought up and taken care off while they are still impressionable of their surroundings, so that they can be moulded to be wonderful seeds in the future that could help in nation development. The Art of Nation Building 2016 programme is one of the programmes that support this initiative. With more than 8000 artworks submitted from all around the nation, it shows that our youths are well endowed in art and have their own opinions on what is relevant to them with regards to Nationhood. What makes the event even more interesting and meaningful is that it allows the young children -- the future leaders of our country -- to express their love and patriotic feelings towards their leaders and country through their own creative imagination. This creative effort should be continued in the future so that more young people will be aware about the founding of the country and the sacrifices made by our founding fathers to build this beloved country of ours. In the hope that Malaysia continues to be progressive and moderate in its overall development, it is important for us to engage our children in the things that will contribute to this reality. Initiatives such as The Art of Nation Building art competition provide a window through which we can realise the fruits of our guidance of strong moral and social values in our children. We in the ministry are fully supportive of any effort to include the young people in the process of building the country. I would like to also add that I am very much encouraged to see a strategic and strong collaboration between the three NGOs namely, Society Empowerment & Economic Development Sabah (SEEDS), the Federation of Sabah Chinese Women Associations (FSCWA) and Junior Chamber International Kota Kinabalu (JCI KK). It is inspiring that these three NGOs which are individually so different in identities and ideologies can come together sharing resources and exchanging their ideas for such a great cause. Hats off to them! Last but not least, I would like to once again congratulate the organisers of this programme for their efforts and commitment in organising the event. And congratulations to all the winners and their parents.

Organising Chairlady cum President of the Federation of Sabah Chinese Women Associations Dr. Pamela Yong

The Colourful Moments of Unity! It is an exciting time in Malaysia. The country is maturing at a rapid rate, both developmentally and sociologically. But what of the views of today’s youngsters, born into a Malaysia vastly different from that known by the previous generation? What of their ideas on nationhood, loyalty to country, and cultural diversity? For the second year running, the Society Empowerment & Economic Development of Sabah (SEEDS), in collaboration with the Sabah State Education Department, the Federation of Sabah Chinese Women Associations (FSCWA), and JCI Kota Kinabalu, aim to engage with our youth, and explore Nationhood through the eyes of young Malaysians via “The Art of Nation Building” art competition themed, “Hari Jadi Malaysia”. This year however, we extended the reach of this competition to a national level, to gauge ideas of Nationalism amongst children in Semenanjung Malaysia, and attempt to draw any parallels between the basic values children expressed in last year’s competition, which was only Sabah based. We are pleased to note that the response has been outstanding with 8283 entries received from across the country. Over the years, there have been murmurs of dissent of which tend to gain momentum circa the national month every year. The perceived imbalance in significance of Malaya’s Independence Day, and our National Day continues to frustrate many Bornean Malaysians, and may lend to further fuelling such discord and disunity. Challenges to national unity such as these are issues that the next generation will have to tackle. But no matter how tough the going gets, we must not allow it to gnaw at the delicate stitches of national unity and nationhood which were painstakingly sewn by our country’s founding fathers. As such, the judging of all art submissions places top priority on ‘factually correct’ artwork. We then turn to the quality of the artwork and I must say I am both impressed and reassured with the personal and thought-provoking graphical representations of these artists’ visions for Malaysia. These seeds of young minds are the reflection of what Malaysia is to come and we share these with you today. Again, I am extremely grateful for the assistance rendered by our co-organisers of this event, who have worked so hard to grow the width and span of the programme. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the schooling communities across the Country for their participation and support. Last but by no means least the parents of the children deserve great cheers, as they have a big role to play in the encouragement and guidance they give their children at home. My congratulations to all the winners, and to each and every participant, I thank you. Well done for producing such wonderful Colourful Moments of Unity!

Sabah State Education Department Director

Datuk Hajah Maimunah Binti Haji Suhaibul I, on behalf of the Sabah Education Department, would like to congratulate the Society Empowerment & Economic Development of Sabah (SEEDS), the Federation of Chinese Women Sabah (FSCWA), and the Junior Chamber International Kota Kinabalu for successfully organising the nationwide art competition with the theme “Hari Jadi Malaysia”. The response was astonishing, with more than 8000 entries submitted. This was followed by the Nation Building Art Exhibition held from September till October 2016. The Exhibition featured 240 shortlisted art pieces. They were displayed at strategic locations throughout Kota Kinabalu. The Sabah State Education Department is proud to be part of this program and would like to continuously support such an effort by SEEDS, FSCWA and JCI Kota Kinabalu in the future. Such an activity will not only enhance students’ skills and creativity in arts but also inculcate their love, faith and loyalty to the nation. In addition, the involvement and support from the public and NGOs in the development of education are highly appreciated, in tandem with the aspirations of the Malaysian Education Blueprint 20132025. I hope that this programme would be continued in the future, and congratulations to the winners and the organisers.

Society Empowerment & Economic Development of Sabah Chairman Datuk Badil Zaman bin Fazul Rahman Assalamualaikum and greetings to everyone. This year marks the 53rd year of the formation of Malaysia. The formation of this great country has been filled with many sweet and sour memories, but for the most part is has been very sweet. Malaysia as a wonderful country as it is, must protect and defend the country’s ideals of multi culture and peaceful co-existence for the sake of our children’s future. In Sabah alone, there are more than 50 ethnics, each with its own unique culture, language and faiths. This cultural and religious diversity must be safeguarded as they signify our common values of racial harmony and peaceful co-existence. ‘The Art of Nation Building’ program was culminated in efforts by various NGOs in Sabah to increase the spirit of togetherness and sense of belonging among Sabahan Malaysian especially the young generation. The first of its kind, the program aims to develop a better nation by engaging young minds through their drawings. I was impressed by our young children who defined Malaysia through their drawings. It is hoped that the future of Sabah as well as the country would be as bright and colourful as the drawings of our children. I would like to congratulate all the winners and their parents for taking part in this competition. I would also like to express my gratitude and sincere thanks to all who have given their time and effort in making this event a successful one.

Junior Chamber International Kota Kinabalu 2016 President Ng Tze Ek JCI has developed many leaders for the nation over the years, and are grooming many more. As leaders, we need something to stand on, something we stay true to, something we reach for. We need to stand on a firm foundation. Stay true to our heart for others, our mission to serve, our values, principles and identity and we shall not divert from the path to success. We hope to reach for the best in each of our members; we inspire and empower our members’ aspirations to reach for the brightest possible future for them. Hence, JCI Kota Kinabalu is honoured to be working together again with Society Empowerment & Economic Development of Sabah (SEEDS) and the Federation of Chinese Women Sabah Association (FSCWA) and Sabah State Education Department on “The Art of Nation Building 2016”. “So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth” Youths have the potential to develop a nation and raise the fundamentals of the national unity spirit. Therefore recognition and contribution from youths is highly needed as they are valuable assets and represent the future generation of national leaders. The beautiful artworks that the students produced are a reflection of the dream and aspiration for the nation. We are immensely proud to be part of the programme again and honoured to have a glimpse of the vision of these young minds. On behalf of JCI Kota Kinabalu, I would like to congratulate all the winners and thank you to all students, parents and schools for their participation. Malaysia Boleh!
