The JCI Vision To be the leading global network of young active citizens.

Editor’s Message Welcome members to the 3rd issue of our 2016 Newsletter. I joined JCI KK in August 2015 and was appointed as Commission Director in 2016. In this short period of time, my involvement in the chapter has been mainly to attend meetings, doing courtesy visits, events and doing projects. It reminds me of my time when I was in university though it does feel very different! Every day is a challenge for all of us; each and every one of us has to juggle between family, friends, classes and career. So why do I burden myself with this organisation? I found that through joining this organisation, I am able to see the other side of the community besides my family and work. Through the involvement with this NGO, I am able to have a different perspective of government bodies and its functions. Besides that, members from different professional backgrounds do share their experiences and ideas. I learnt how to interact with people with different opinions, different personalities and attitudes. Sometimes you might not like it, but you will learn to accept the indifference and overcome it. This has been a great learning platform for me personally. I am thankful to have this opportunity to know these people who are now my good friends; you know who you are so, kudos to all the awesome people. If you feel that lack of time is holding you back, try to strategise your time management. If you can manage your time well, you are able to do anything. Lastly, I would like to share a quote to all the readers - ”[i]t is important to know that while juggling rubber balls and glass balls. The former may bounce back when you miss, but the glass ball will break when you let them go, so prioritize – Nita Ambani”. Signing off! Victoria Su Commission Director (Public Relations)

1st June 2016 Visitation to Luchu Taiwan It’s a short 30 minutes’ drive away from Kaohsiung, hence we made plans to visit our sisterhood chapter in Taiwan. Although Luchu has been deaffliated from JCI HQ for quite some time now (due to most of the youth moving to the urban areas, resulting in difficulty recruiting members), it was still quite an amazing insight to see that the older JCI Luchu members still schedule in a monthly GMM. This GMM is usually attended by minimum 80 members.

Patriotism and one’s love for their country is not just about flying the national flag once a year. This physical and traditional action may no longer be effective amongst our younger generation when it comes to nurturing and inculcating love and loyalty to their home country. Instead, alternative innovative approaches are required to engage the young nowadays to sow in them this ‘patriotic seed’. Therefore, this programme is aimed at re-introducing the young to the country’s golden olden times and awakening their sense of belonging towards their home country by re-enacting and expressing the past pride in their artwork. Through this expression of art, history can then become a practical reference for creating a better future in our country. This programme is jointly organised by the Sabah State Education Department (JPN), the Society Empowerment & Economic Development of Sabah (SEEDS), the Federation of Sabah Chinese Women Associations (FCWS) and JCI Kota Kinabalu. The programme is aimed; • • • •

To cultivate a sense of nationhood and belonging through art To encourage patriotism and instill loyalty into the hearts of young people by creating awareness about national values through the expression of art To create awareness to the diverse race, ethnicity and cultures of our society especially in our youth To further create an understanding of this diversity and thereby acceptance and respect for each other

There are three (3) parts to the programme; (I) NATION-WIDE ART COMPETITION (ends 30th August 2016, 2pm) Entry form can be downloaded from http://jcikk.org/the-art-of-nation-building (II) NATION BUILDING ART EXHIBITION (III) PRIZE PRESENTATION / APPRECIATION CEREMONY Jointly Organised By
