Editor’s Message

I am pleased to present Issue 2 of our 2018 newsletter. This issue, I would like to share some advice that I’ve never forgotten. “Leadership is taken, not given,” and “Don’t wait for that opportunity to arrive on a silver platter.” If you’re interested in advancing into a leadership role, you need not wait for permission or an invitation to be a leader. You can assume the role and show up as a leader regardless of the position you hold in your company/ organisation. How do you go about it? Have the courage to speak up and be in the game. Make sure you are heard. Overcome your fear, trust yourself, and go for it! So don’t be shy about speaking up and looking for opportunities, every day, to demonstrate your ability to lead. Conduct yourself as a leader, and it will become part of your personal brand.

President’s Message

Brew yourself a cup of coffee or tea, and sip while you ponder. How many opportunities to learn, grow and gain new experience have you missed due to fear of stepping out of your comfort zone? Are you regretting not taking up the challenge that was once presented to you in the past? In this year’s Area Sabah Convention, I am proud to see JCI Kota Kinabalu members taking up new challenges, developing new skills and grow as an individual. Not letting the excuse, “no experience”, to hold us back, JCI Kota Kinabalu participated in Public Speaking and Debate Competition in both English and Mandarin categories, and three of our members were selected to enter the FINALS for Parliamentary Procedure Quiz. To register and participate is already a huge win for JCI Kota Kinabalu, but for JCI Kota Kinabalu members to win CHAMPION for Mandarin Public Speaking (Victoria Su) and Debate Competition (Victoria Su, Jonathan Sim, Oliver Ho) is a DOUBLE win for us. JCI Kota Kinabalu’s achievements in 2018 ASC do not stop there, as we won Champion and 1st runner up in the Parliamentary Procedure Quiz (Joan Shim); a triple whammy! Now, with the experience we gain from ASC, we march into 2018 ANC stronger and equipped. All the best to JCI Kota Kinabalu members representing Area Sabah for Mandarin Public Speaking and Debate Competion, and Parliamentary Procedure Quiz! You are already CHAMPIONS to us. “To infinity, and BEYOND!”

In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030. Our governments have a plan to save our planet…it’s our job to make sure they stick to it. The Global Goals are only going to work if we fight for them and you can’t fight for your rights if you don’t know what they are. We believe the Goals are only going to be completed if we can make them famous.

12th April 2018 Public Speaking & Debate Training

Project: Public Speaking & Debate Training Date: 12th April 2018 Organising Chairperson: Oliver Ho

Public speaking is one of the most under rated skills learned in school, yet is one of the most valuable. The way you communicate shows a lot about you, and can influence other’s opinions of you. In every profession communicatiis important. Good communication skills, no matter what you plan to do in life, will help you out greatly and improve your chances against a harsh job market. Five tips -How to be persuasive 1. Know what you want to say. Good, logical reasons why you’re right, backed up with evidence or illustration, are the heart of any speech. 2. Know who you’re speaking to. The target of any speech is the audience, so you have to consider what will get them interested and what will persuade them. 3. Know who you are. Good public speaking is about being genuine and credible, not doing an impression of Winston Churchill. Use your own voice. 4. Know where your speech is going. The best ideas are forgettable without a structure - beginning, middle, end; logical progression. 5. Know what you’re up against. Listening to others, whether opponents, questioners or colleagues, keeps you relevant to the discussion.
