Creed We Believe: That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise That government should be of laws rather than of men That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality And that service to humanity is the best work of life The JCI Mission To provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. The JCI Vision To be the leading global network of young active citizens.

Editor’s Message Your actions today hold the key to your future. If you want to predict your future, look at the things that you are focusing on today. I am pleased to present Issue 3 of our 2018 newsletter. If you realise that you haven’t achieved much in the last ten years. What will you do about it? If you do nothing, the next ten years will just be like the last ten. If you are not aware of the need to change, you will not change. It helps to ask others to evaluate you as well because they will be more objective than yourself. Finally, don’t look back with regret on the things you didn’t do because you cannot undo the past. Regrets are dream-stealers. They keep us in the past and hinder us from learning from our mistakes. Learn to shut the door on yesterday’s regrets, move on and open doors of opportunity in the future. It takes courage to do so. We are responsible for how we turn out in the future.

President’s Message

The late Secretary-General of the United Nations (’97-’06), Kofi Annan once said, “To live is to choose. But to choose well, you must now who you are and what you stand for, where you want to go and why you want to get there”. Many of us join JCI in support of our friends, often not knowing what we got ourselves into. What used to be only “sleep, eat, work and play”, now becomes “JCI, sleep, JCI, eat, JCI, work, JCI, play, JCI”. Often you’ll get questions from others, wondering why do you spend so much time and energy in JCI… then you’ll find yourself asking why too, till you experienced the JCI effect. Every Jaycees’ enlightenment experience is different, but the sense of satisfaction, achievement and joy after each JCI event, would be a reminder why you join and remain as a JCI member. - Rest in Peace Kofi Annan Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future – the beyond borders 2018

In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030. Our governments have a plan to save our planet…it’s our job to make sure they stick to it. The Global Goals are only going to work if we fight for them and you can’t fight for your rights if you don’t know what they are. We believe the Goals are only going to be completed if we can make them famous.

23rd June 2018 Financial Literacy Talk

Project: Financial Literacy Talk Date: 23rd June 2018 Organising Chairperson: Joan Shim

The state of financial literacy among Malaysians leave much to be desired, according to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) deputy governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour. This comes as several surveys have suggested that many Malaysians are still unable to make responsible financial decisions for their own financial well-being.

We happy that besides the many leadership training that the chapter oranised, we have branched out to feature some issues really facing youth nowadays - financial health. Glad to see many of our own members and members from other chapters come to get ahead of their financial health!

28th August 2018 Tingkod Noh Plastic Straws

Project: Tingkod Noh Plastic Straws Date: 28th August 2018 Organising Chairperson: Chian Mei Hsing

A plastic straw’s life span only last one drink, unlike some soft plastics, which can be recycled, plastic straws, cannot be recycled. As they travel down the conveyor belt at your local recycling facility, small items like straws fall through the cracks. This means that straws sit in landfill for years or pollute our oceans and waterways, harming marine life. In the ocean, plastic does not biodegrade. Instead it simply breaks down into smaller pieces over hundreds of years. These micro pieces of plastics are easily mistaken by fishes as food, which eventually ends up in our diets. It is estimated that 8 million tonnes of plastic pollute our oceans every year. At this rate, it is predicted by 2050, there would be more plastic than fish in the ocean. In just a little more than 30 years, what would become of our beautiful Sabah? It is our duty and responsibility to save our oceans, not only for our generation, but also, for many generations after, starting today.
