President’s Message As we come to the end of 2016, it is my honour to present the final issue of our 2016 chapter E-newsletter. The chapter newsletter was previously known as “BREEZE”. This year we have tried to track down some of these published newsletters. We managed to find a few in our Secretariat, and digital copies can be found on our website. Feel free to visit and revisit the old jaycees’ time. To publish a newsletter is no easy task. Hence, it is only befitting that through many turns and turbulence over the years; we have come back strong and energised this year to present to you our quarterly newsletters! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the editors of the chapter newsletters, Wendy Chan, Victoria Su, Jonathan Sim and Scott Lu. This year we have seen many achievements by the members and by the chapter. I am truly honoured to be part of this amazing journey. My sincere appreciation to the members for your hard work and participation, I am truly blessed as president to have such a DREAM team with me this year! I would also like to take this opportunity to especially thank Ministry of Youth and Sports Sabah in that this year JCI Kota Kinabalu is honoured to have received the Anugerah Perdana Belia Negara – Sabah State Level Winner for Outstanding Youth Society. Thank you once again to the members. Signing off with a quote by Lao Tzu “A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.”

Editor’s Message Hola fellow friends! It is my greatest honour to present the final issue of the JCI Kota Kinabalu newsletter for 2016. As 2016 Area Sabah IT Director, I fully understand that releasing a quarterly newsletter is not an easy task even though it is essential to showcase what had happened throughout that time period. I believe that in order to achieve greatness, one must first sacrifice something which in this case is, time though I believe the reward in return itself is more than anyone could ask for. As a JCI Kota Kinabalu member I got to learn all sorts of skills such as public speaking, debating and promoting one’s self through the training provided by the Chapter. All these were foreign to me as I was a very timid, quiet and introvert kid but JCI Kota Kinabalu taught me to be brave, be proactive and be better. That is why I would like to send my highest gratitude to all the members from JCI Kota Kinabalu for guiding me into a brighter, better and a more successful future. I would also like to congratulate the 2016 Chapter President Ng Tze Ek and his Board of Directors. Without their efforts, blood and sweat, the Chapter would not be where it is right now. I am very proud to say that I am from JCI Kota Kinabalu for it has made me what I am today and I never regretted one bit of it. I also would like to share a favourite quote of mine which is none other than our Junior Chamber International creed, that the service to humanity is the best work of life. Lastly, I sincerely wish JCI Kota Kinabalu all the best in all upcoming events and a fruitful year in 2017 to be led by President-elect, Patrick Teo. Adios. Scott Lu

7th September 2016 Art of Nation Building Judging Day The second installment of the Art of Nation Building (TANB) competition saw some 8283 artworks submitted to the organising committee before the closing date on 30 August 2016. Submissions to the competition came from 147 schools from all over the country. Out of the 147 schools, 112 were from Sabah, followed by 18 from Johor, 8 from Perak, 3 from Penang and Kuala Lumpur and 2 from Negeri Sembilan. According to the co-organising chairperson Dr Pamela Yong, the number of submissions this year exceeded the initial target of 8000 compared with 5189 artworks submitted in the previous year. Sabah recorded the highest number of submissions at 8076, followed by Johor 146, Perak 41, Kuala Lumpur 9, Negeri Sembilan 6 and Penang 5. Mr Ng Tze Ek, President of the JCI KK, noted that, “We are also exceptionally touched with the avid number of participants this year with their inspirational artwork illustrating their pride for the country and the colourful moments of unity.” Top winners will be determined by the creativity of their artworks and the factual accuracy of their presentation as well. The synopsis of each of the artworks will also constitute a portion of the assessment marks. Commenting further on the importance of factual accuracy in the artworks presented, Dr Pamela said, “We should not be afraid to both admit and submit to history. Facts are facts”. Dr Pamela was referring to the polemics surrounding the year of the formation of Malaysia or “Hari Malaysia”. The competition was divided into three main categories.
