HISTORY OF JCI KOTA KINABALU The idea of a Junior Chamber germinated back in 1959. The “3 Musketeers” who closely associated with the formation of the first chapter in Jesselton (now known as Kota Kinabalu) are Mr. Fauzi Patel, John Hii and Michael Chen. Fauzi Patel was on a study tour to Australia, recalled being hosted by Nombour Junior Chamber, Queensland. John Hii, manager of Messer Jardine Waugh Co. was on a training course in London. He was registered by his colleagues to attend the 17th JCI World Congress in Paris. He was impressed with the friendliness, warmth and charm. NG TZE EK

JCI Kota Kinabalu is proud to have successfully completed The Outstanding Young Person of Sabah 2016. TOYPS was established back in 2007 and subsequently organised in 2009. This year, we are proud to have many distinguished nominees across all categories and we do hope that we are able to bring to light their achievements and causes that many may not know. This project’s success would not have been possible without the leadership and commitment of TOYPS Chairman Vitalis Ronald and his amazing team of hardworking individuals. Special mention should also be given to the TOYPS Nomination Director Wendy Chan and team in working hard to source the nominees and encouraging them to share their stories.

2016 PRESIDENT

Arthur Joseph Kurup

Arthur Joseph Kurup is the Deputy President of Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (“PBRS”) since 2015. His duties include administering and governing of PBRS to achieve its objective to preserve, protect and promote the rights and interest of Sabah within the Federation of Malaysia. Arthur’s primary focus is on assisting rural communities and his biggest challenge is access - access to education, access to information to economic opportunities. Arthur also focuses on long term economic solutions, such as providing opportunities to education through guidance, mentoring and access to scholarships. This scope includes vocational education as well as access to financing and business startups to provide rural communities with opportunities to generate income through economic activities. Arthur advocates his ideals and vision through politics. However, being a minority party in a multi-racial country, it is a challenge to get views and beliefs to be heard especially when speaking up about the rights of minority groups who are economically disadvantaged. In 2014 he was invited by the Global Peace Foundation, an international society based in Washington D.C to speak at the United Nations Headquarters in New York about young and innovative leadership. He has also been invited by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia Pacific to speak at their conference in Bangkok on youth entrepreneurship. In 2015, he was invited by the Honourable Eno T.R Zeliang, Chief Minister of Nagaland, India to speak at the annual Naga Students General Conference to share his experience on justice, youth leadership on indigenous and minority groups. He shares JCI’s belief that “service to humanity is the best work of life” because it uplifts the society that we live in. In his own words, it is like a “lifting of all boats effect” when the water level rises, all boats, whether big or small will rise along with the tide. Hence, helping to uplift your society is like putting up the water level. When you live in a happier and more economically progressive society, you create a better environment not just for yourself but for those around you, and especially your loved ones.

Being a skilled lyricist, Rozella uses music to tell stories that are close to her heart. Her songs have been featured on the Malaysian English Top 10 Charts and the Borneo English Top 10 Charts. She was recently nominated for two (2) categories in the 2016 VIMA Music Awards. She also wrote the theme song for two events, ROR Wildlife Festival 2015 and Walk for Autism Sabah 2014 and 2016. In addition to that, Rozella is the founder of a social photography project called “True Complexion” which celebrates diversity and helps raise awarenessabout different medical conditions. “I grew up very shy and awkward. I always had low self-esteem because of the birthmark on my face. I was singing and writing in bedroom ever since I was five years old, but I never had the courage to share my music with anyone. The idea of being the spotlight and having everyone stare at me was just too scary. It wasn’t until 2013 when I decided to finally give it a go. It was very challenging for me at first. I would have full blown panic attacks before shows. Still, I pushed myself and people kept telling me how brave and inspiring I was. It made me think about sharing my story and I wanted to look for stories of other people who are not letting their limitations hold them back. And I wanted to create a platform where we can raise awareness about different conditions that people struggle with and create a more understanding and accepting community. I was bullied a lot as a kid, and cyber bullying is also a problem nowadays. There’s so much of negativity online, I wanted to spread some positivity and love instead.” - Rozella

Nadira Ilana

Nadira Ilana is an independent filmmaker from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Nadira has directed, written and produced several short films and documentaries now including “Dream Cradle” and “Lastik”, “Once Upon a Time in the East” for Astro and Red Communications. She is best known for her political-historical documentary “The Silent Riot” which was awarded Best Human Rights Documentary at Freedom Film Festival 2012, which became her introduction into documentary filmmaking. In 2016, Nadira completed a film residency as part of Big Stories, Small Towns, an internationally acclaimed new media micro-documentary series from Australia. Her work was the first Malaysian co-production with Big Stories Co., focusing on Kampung Bongkud and Kampung Namaus, two (2) Dusun villages located in Sabah. The Sabah-based filmmaker is currently developing her first feature titled “Wilderness”, set in her coastal hometown. She does a lot of research before she pursues any project. She reads a lot and loves talking to older people because they have the best stories. A lot of her process now is to try to be a better listener. She tries to get up close and learn about what makes people tick – what do they need? Would they need this film? Can this film make a difference in their lives? Should this story be a documentary or a fiction film? She tries to tell the stories as authentically as possible and then she tries to think about how to make it impactful through different forms of distribution. She wants to ensure that the people who inspired the films can watch them too. Her dream is that she wants people to walk away having seen her films feeling entertained but also feel that, “this is mine”. In some ways the desire to make films steeped in culture also comes from the fear that if she doesn’t make films set in Sabah, as an ethnic Dusun, her culture, her grandmother’s language could potentially die literally in the next couple of generations. So she does think now about how to take cultural stories and make the films entertaining so these ‘rare stories’ can enter popular culture. The best thing is when young people tell her that her films made them want to learn more about their own history and culture. That means the world to her.

MORAL AND/OR ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP

Sheelasheena Damian

Sheelasheena’s current job as Policy Analyst for WWF-Malaysia (Sabah office) requires her to manage a Policy unit in Sabah office which is responsible in providing technical support, advice and assistance to other conservation departments, in relation to National and State conservation policy and environmental law. She is expected to formulate and present technical recommendation to senior members of conservation department on policy and legislation. Advocacy to relevant government agencies/ stakeholders is expected through strategically identified channels for such purposes. This unit is also responsible to review and coordinate inputs into various state policy reports and Environmental Impact Assessment reports, supervise and guide on land use, energy related issues, forestry, marine, and environmental related issues and also to advocate WWF-Malaysia’s conservation policies. The most part of the job involved working with government agencies and other stakeholders, and addressing conservation of environment legal and policy problems and needs. Environmental conservation work in Sabah faces numerous challenges, between the demand to develop area for infrastructureand commercial developments and the need to conserve area. Policy and legal complexity always become the hindrance to advocate sustainable management and use of natural resources. When the government commits to international treaty and convention for environmental issue, the government will faces challenges whenever conflict arises for the demand to develop certain area. Sabah tourism activities, culture, as well as well being depends on its natural resources. Dr. Pamela Yong

Dr Pamela is one of the leading advocates in senior citizen welfare. Her effort in organizing a one stop centre (a mobile health check station) in Foh Sang is one of the best examples of one of her initiatives. This mobile one stop community service unit provides health service check for BMI, sugar level, cholesterol, mammogram subsidy registration, pap smear and family planning. Besides that, the service unit aims to assist senior citizens apply for social welfare scheme. Although the service unit was aimed to be a service for senior citizen, it has expanded to provide registration for social service for orang kurang upaya (OKU), children’s aid and Widower’s Aid & counselling. Dr Pamela realised the racial sentiments seem to be at an all – time high with certain groups seeking political mileage from drawing lines between our races. Hence she has organised a few programme to educate Malaysians, so they should acknowledge differences to promote respect, appreciation of our multi-cultural and multi religious community. This is done through programmes like: Sungkai with SEEDS and Art of Nation Building Programme. Dr Pamela’s contribution is on a voluntary basis through different non-government organisation and at the same time maintains her specialist dental clinic as an Orthodontist on a full time basis while being a mother of 3 young children. Her commitment towards social and society programme is beyond any doubt, tireless and sincere. She works beyond race, religion or social class boundaries.

Jasmine Natasha Rajah Jasmine works for Astro Radio Sabah as an Integration Exec where her main task is handling marketing and promotions for both MY FM Sabah and hitzfm Sabah. Culture and traditions are often looked passed as being null and unimportant especially for the youths. However this may not necessarily be the case as young people are slowly embracing culture and traditions and really understanding and appreciating what makes them unique. To explore this idea and interest of hers to ‘find’ her roots, to understand where she came from and share this journey with other young people such as herself, she started a YouTube channel – Ohheymissking – where she combines both her love for acting and blogging into a media form relatable to those who view her videos.

She believes that her YouTube channel is her best achievement because through it, she was able to connect with other Sabahan youths, young adults and adults just like herself; who are equally lost but very much interested in understanding, making sense and restoring their identities as Sabahans. To be able to reach such an incredibly audience, no matter how big or small the number is, the fact that people actually watch the videos, is a big honour for her. Beyond her videos, she is actively involved in her organisation – the Green Leaf Theatre House – where they work closely with Sabahan youths to engage and explore their creativity and critical thinking and apply it in theatre. At Green Leaf Theatre, she acts as Vice President and co-founder of the organisation. The main objective of the organisation is to introduce performing arts in Kota Kinabalu especially for youths where they have a platform to express themselves creatively, as well as to encourage volunteerism amongst Sabahan youths. She also volunteers to manage the website and Facebook page of PACOS Trust which stands for Partners of Community Organisation in Sabah; an organisation with more than 20 years of experience in working closely with the indigenous communities around Sabah.

CONTRIBUTION TO CHILDREN, WORLD PEACE OR HUMAN RIGHTS

Gayle Anthony Jokinin Gayle’s role in Perpaduan Anak Negeri Sabah (PAN Sabah) is to uphold the rights of the people of Sabah especially the natives. She, through PAN Sabah, has travelled extensively around Sabah as well as some parts of Sarawak to spread awareness of the essence of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the importance for it to be upheld by the people of the Borneon States. Her works involve educating and encouraging the people to voice out their concerns to relevant authorities and speak up on their rights.

After 53 years of the formation of Malaysia, the people of Sabah still face basic documentation issues (no birth certificate and identification cards) which not only remain unresolved but has worsen over the years. She is providing assistance to the people especially in the interior, to obtain their birth certificates and identification cards. Recently she assisted the mobile courts in collecting required documents for the processing of late registration of births for the people of Pensiangan. She is also working closely with the community leaders of Pensiangan to find solutions to their local problems. Gayle believes that it is high time for Sabah to rise up and step into her identity as a sovereign nation that is an equal partner to the formation of Malaysia (not a mere state that of the states in Malaya). The identity of a nation starts with the proper recognition of its people’s citizenship. She believes in the need for a concerted effort in resolving identification issues for true Sabahans and has dedicated her time, energy and resources for this cause and all other issues connected therewith.

TEN OUTSTANDING YOUNG MALAYSIAN

TEN OUTSTANDING YOUNG MALAYSIAN

Introduction Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian (TOYM) Program was originated from Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World Program, which was developed by Durwood Howes, the President of United State of Jaycees for year 1930 and 1931. Junior Chamber International adopted the Program in year 1982. The JCI TOYM program was launched by Junior Chamber International Malaysia (JCIM) in year 1985 to commemorate the International Year of the Youth. JCIM then decided to adopt this program as part of JCIM annual project. Objective To accord recognition to young Malaysian between the ages of 18 to 40, whose dedication to their profession or life undertakings has resulted in exceptional achievement, in the form of significant contributions to the progress or welfare of the community at large and to the advancement of their respective field of endeavor. To create public awareness and give proper recognition to the outstanding achievements of the honorees, thereby serving as inspirational examples and incentives to the young Malaysian to forge ahead to greater heights of achievements in the spirit of selfless dedication for the further development of the community. Honourees selected in past years have represented the heights of progress in all human endeavors. Many have gone on to even greater achievements. All have continued to serve humanity in a great variety of ways. Junior Chamber International Malaysia will honour the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian in an Award Ceremony. The ceremony will highlight each winner’s career in narrative form and provide a stage from which the honorees can challenge and inspire young people from around the country. For each honoree, there will be a presentation profiling his/her accomplishments, followed by the trophy presentation, and an acceptance speech.

TOYM Trophy

JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award The JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World Program (JCI TOYP) is the result of similar programs run by affiliated National Organizations of JCI. The original program was developed by Durwood Howes, President of The United States Junior Chamber of Commerce during 1930 - 1931. He conceived the idea of recognizing outstanding individuals by publishing a yearbook entitled “America’s Young Men” which highlighted the work of twelve exemplary leaders each year. The United States Junior Chamber officially adopted the program in 1938. Since 1952, numerous JCI National Organizations have established their own Outstanding Young Persons Programs. Past of national awards include such well-known personalities as Orson Welles, Howard Hughes, Nelson Rockefeller, John F. Kennedy, Henry Kissinger, Gerald Ford, Benigno Aquino, and many, many more, all named before the age of 40 and before they had achieved national prominence. In 1983, JCI officially adopted the JCI Ten Outstanding Persons of the World Program. Since then JCI has honoured hundreds individuals from more than 50 nations.
