ORGANISING CHAIRLADY chian mei hsing

It is my great pleasure in welcoming you to this Installation Awards and Ceremony, during which recognition will be given to the dedicated members and to introduce the new Board to JCI members and the public. On behalf of the organising committee and the Chapter, I would like to record my utmost appreciation to all the guest locally and overseas who had made this journey uphill to join us in this event. Community is a powerful word. Not all communities rally around an event. Some rally around a cause. Community becomes even more powerful when it includes the entire community. When all members of the community pull together for a united cause, the power becomes unlimited. The change, or transformation, that occurs from the entire community is something greater than just what a small group of the community or an individual can achieve. We all have something to contribute. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the organising committee members for their support and always volunteering whenever manpower is needed. I consider myself very lucky to have such a great team. Our thanks to all our Past Presidents who has supported us in many ways through this journey being in JCIKK. Not forgetting also the JCI members, family, friends and sponsors too for their continuous support to make this event even more meaningful. Thank you.

jci WORLD president

Alexander Tio

Dear JCI Friends, On behalf of nearly 200.000 members across the world, accept my congratulations for accepting responsibility to serve in 2019. 2019 marks the beginning of the implementation of the 2019-2023 Strategic Plan. In the next five years we would accelerate transformation by empowering ourselves so that we can inspire change. We will take actions on the streets of our communities, in boardrooms of corporations and in government halls. Through the activities of our local organizations, we will enable the transformation of young people from ordinary to active citizens; from spectators to actors of change in their communities. We will do this by relying on each member to lead where they are and to engage more young people to be part of this exciting adventure called JCI. I urge you dear friends to continue to inspire youth, inspire leaders and inspire change.

NATIONAL PRESIDENT Andy Lau

Greetings from JCI Malaysia, It is my honor to be invited to pen a few words in conjunction with Junior Chamber International Kota Kinabalu’s 57th Anniversary & Installation Award Ceremony. Best wishes to Organising Chairperson Chian Mei Hsing and your team for the effort in coordinating the event; these experiences is a great opportunity you to learn, grow and to show the best that your Local Organization can offer. My heartiest congratulations to 2019 President Victoria Su and your Board of Directors for taking up the challenge to lead JCI Kota Kinabalu and bring positive impact to your community. Your theme “Build Leaders” is what is needed in JCI and I am excited to see the achievements you will accomplish this year. My appreciation and admiration goes to the out-going President Daphne Lo and your team for the effort and dedication that have been rendered to your Local Organization. Our 2019 theme is LEADERSHIP BEYOND LIMITS, JCI Malaysia will be the organization that creates quality and capable leaders to make our community and the country better. The national organization’s key focus for 2019 will be EFFICIENCY. As JCI Malaysia grows, it is imperative for all of us to foster a culture of administrative efficiency. To further this principle, the three areas of focus would be: Entrepreneurship, Alignment and Sustainability. Entrepreneurship: As majority of our members are aspiring entrepreneurs, programs such as JCI Malaysia Best Business Plan (BBP) Program will be introduced to train and provide members an opportunity to pitch and be connected to grants or resources to turn their proposal into action. The 2019 Business Summit will be a great platform for the pitch and the Business Summit will also feature TOYM, CYEA & SDA finalists’ announcement to enhance the value and purpose of the Summit. Alignment: Both administrative and recognition system of the national organization and area management will be aligned and streamlined to reflect one direction and one goal of JCI Malaysia. The Local Organizations shall spend more time in implementing impact projects in their respective communities and JCI Malaysia will provide support and resources to them. Sustainability: JCI Active Citizens Framework (ACF) will be continued as it is proven effective in producing sustainable impactful projects in our local community. For 2019, the Sustainable Membership Framework (SMF) will be introduced to all Local Organizations to more systematically recruit, retain and empower its’ members. Just like the ACF, Sustainable Membership Framework will effectively provide sustainable solutions to improve membership strength and engagement. 2019 will be a turning point for JCI Malaysia, with accelerated growth over the years, a strong and united National team, and passionate members in our organization, we will synergize and bring JCI Malaysia to even greater heights. Thank you!

NATIONAL

EXECUTIVE

VICE PRESIDENT zyee duLLIe

Dear members, Senators and Alumni of JCI Kota Kinabalu, I hereby extend my heartiest congratulations to the hardworking organising chairperson, Chian Mei Hsing and her resourceful committee for successfully organising this historical event. We all know it is never easy organising Installation and Awards ceremonies as they are one of the most anticipated annual events for any local organisation. Thank you for giving us the pleasure of this meaningful event with the theme ‘Your Heritage’. Through the highly capable leadership of 2018 president Daphne Lo and her dedicated board of directors, we now celebrate the various personal, organisational and community achievements that JCI Kota Kinabalu has accomplished throughout last year. Congratulations and well done to outgoing president Daphne for leading JCI Kota Kinabalu members in successfully achieving widespread positive impact through their sustainable projects. I look forward to new success stories that will be created in 2019 through the capable leadership of incoming president Victoria Su and her line-up of dedicated board of directors, with their theme ‘Stronger Together 2019’. It is my sincere hope that she and fellow JCI Kota Kinabalu members will continue to be self-motivated and self-driven in fulfilling their LO’s goals, two important traits needed in a successful leader. Therefore, I seek for every single member in JCI Kota Kinabalu and in Area Sabah to fully subscribe to this year’s Area theme, R.I.S.E. UP, which strongly calls for you to be the best leader that you can be-but most importantly, to be the best person that you can be, living up to your utmost potential. Through strong determination and proper planning, a 100% Efficiency Award and even a 5-star rating award for JCI Kota Kinabalu is achievable. As JCI Kota Kinabalu will host the prestigious Annual National Convention (ANC) this year in Kota Kinabalu, the Area Sabah team and I look forward to working with the president and ANC Convention Director, ‘Jelly’ and his committed organising committee in ensuring a smooth and memorable ANC. Based on rave reviews of the many past conventions organised by JCI Kota Kinabalu, we are confident that ANC this year will be filled with wonderful surprises and a meaningful programme line-up for our fellow national and international participants to enjoy. With that, I wish JCI Kota Kinabalu members all the best in organising this significant and prominent convention. Meanwhile, as Area Sabah Chairperson this year, I believe unity among members will continue to grow stronger this year and the various LO and Area projects will continue to bring about more impactful, positive changes to so many lives using the Active Citizen Framework (ACF) under the various United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). The Area team and I strive to promote equal developments between the West and East Coast of Sabah and ensure all Area projects are conducted in an efficient manner, per JCI Malaysia’s main plan this year of enhancing efficiency. Lastly, throughout the journey of rising up to be our best, remember to always be kind to yourself and spread kindness to others via volunteerism.

OUTGOING PRESIDENT DAPHNE LO

Every single JCI member has their own meaning to what JCI is, and at times, its not something you can explain it to someone, but its for someone to experience it themselves. But to be a Jaycees, you need to find your “WHY”. And when you do, you’ll uphold; Once A Jaycees, Always a Jaycees. Unless; unless someone like you who cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to happen. It’s not. The Beyond Borders year is not just an individual, but about how far of a reach we went beyond to do things, to create impact, together. These are the numbers of JCI Kota Kinabalu flagship projects we have organised in 2018; 5 freeMarket, 2 Go Bald and 5 Tingkod Noh Plastic Straws. 12 maybe not seem big, till its broken down to you: • • •

More than 1000 villagers we reached and benefited from JCI Kota Kinabalu freeMarket. 51 participants pledged and shaved their head bald to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer during Go Bald. In just 4 months,Tingkod Noh Plastic Straws have distributed more than 8000 stainless steel straws, which is roughly equivalent to 960,000 NOs to plastic straws.

It is not a one person’s effort, but it took each and everyone of us to make it happen. To the Beyond Borders Board of Directors, all organising chairmans, the committee members and members, you were the vessel that brought JCI Kota Kinabalu beyond borders! To the 57th JCI Kota Kinabalu Installation and Awards Ceremony Organising Chairlady, Chian Mei Hsing, and her committee members, I salute to each and everyone of you for taking up the challenge and braving on each hurdle that stumbled upon. Unless; Starman in its red Tesla Roadstar is still on its way to Mars, but my year as 2018 President has come to and end. It’s one of the greatest journey I ever took, and memorable memories created, thank you JCI Kota Kinabalu. Signing off The Beyond Borders, and handing the torch to 2019 President, Victoria Su, The Stronger Together year begins.

INCOMING PRESIDENT

VICTORIA SU

A very good afternoon to everyone, A quote by John Maxwell: “Character creates a foundation upon which the structure of your talent and your life can build. If there are cracks in that foundation, you cannot build much.” JCI is an organisation which plays an important role in preparing the young generations of today to become the future leaders of tomorrow through its various training programs, individual development and community-based activities, management opportunities and business networking. With such an extensive network, members will be able to gain access to limitless opportunities to build themselves up as well as being able to create positive changes to the nation and to the community. Leadership is about the ability to inspire people from all walks of life around a common purpose; a higher purpose even. In this challenging environment, we have to constantly equip ourselves with new skills and stay abreast with current trends so as to adapt along with the rest of the world. This year our theme “Stronger Together” aims to concentrate on education and beneficial activities emphasizing on programmes that will strengthen one’s identity, character and leadership. To 2018 President Daphne Lo and her Board of Directors: Thank you for achieving greater heights with JCI KK “Beyond Borders” , the 2019 team will try our very best to continue to be “Stronger Together”, and hopefully produce a few surprises along the way. Lastly, congratulations to the Organising Chairlady Chian Mei Hsing and her committee on their outstanding work for this event. Thank you.

jAYCEE OATH Inspired by the JCI Creed, the official oath of a Jaycee shall be: “I, (state name of member), do solemnly pledge that I will uphold the ideals and principles of Junior Chamber International Kota Kinabalu and promote the objectives of Junior Chamber International Kota Kinabalu”.

in the beginning The idea of a Junior Chamber germinated back in 1959. The “3 Musketeers” who closely associated with the formation of the first chapter in Jesselton (now known as Kota Kinabalu) were Mr. Fauzi Patel, John Hii and Michael Chen. Fauzi Patel was on a study tour to Australia, recalled being hosted by Nombour Junior Chamber, Queensland. John Hii, manager of Messer Jardine Waugh Co. was on a training course in London. He was registered by his colleagues to attend the 17th JCI World Congress in Paris. He was impressed with the friendliness, warmth and charm. Mr Michael Chen, Manager of Cathay Cinema then, was contacted by both Fauzi & John and started recruiting members. It was only in late 1961 when Mr Lee Choon Fatt appeared that there was some momentum in recruitment. Together with another 3 members (Robert De Souza, John Su and George Chin) a meeting was held in January 1962. On July 1962, the chapter was formed and the 1st Organisation meeting was held at Jesselton Recreation Club. 17 members were present, Fauzi Patel, John Hii, Michael Chen, Lee Choon Fatt, Robert De Souza, John Su, Teo Geok Sang, Yuen Peng Cheng, Mak Sin Loong, Ho Fook Kee, Lim Kim Jee, Lim Beng Aun, John Foo, Spencer Lim, Peter Soong and Liew Yun Choi. The Jesselton Junior Chamber was formed by the following protem officers; Acting Chairman – John Hii VP (External) – George Chin VP (Internal) – Lee Choon Fatt Secretary – Fauzi Patel Treasurer – Michael Chen Directors – Teo Geok Seng, Ho Fook Kee, Yuen Peng Cheng, Mak Sin Loong The Inauguration General Meeting held on November 1962 elected the Board of Directors for 1963 Charter President – George Chin VP (External) - Lee Choon Fatt VP (Internal) – John Hii Secretary – James Yap Treasurer – Foo Tiang Keng Board members – Lawrence Liew, Lim Su Seng, Michael Chen, Fauzi Patel From a membership size of 17 in 1962, Jesselton Junior Chamber has grown and transformed into Kota Kinabalu Jaycees to Kota Kinabalu Junior Chamber and finally known as JCI Kota Kinabalu.

2019: Year in Review JCI FreeMarket

People say that nothing in life is free but what if you could actually take anything you like without having to pay a single cent for it? It may sound too good to be true, but that is what the FreeMarket is all about. As its name suggests, the market, has a concept similar to a regular flea market, except that everything you see there can be yours, for free. The project is further supported by a group of medical team to provide villagers with health check. Among the check provided was BMI, blood glucose and blood pressure check. In 2018, we have managed to organise 5 FreeMarkets. FreeMarket 1.0 - Kampung Togudon, Penampang FreeMarket 2.0 - Kampung Pengasaan, Inanam FreeMarket 3.0 - Kampung Wak Wak, Sepanggar FreeMarket 4.0 - Kampung Buayan, Penampang FreeMarket 5.0 - Kampung Rantau, Kiulu

2019: Year in Review Chinese New Year Party

Sabah Women & Children Hospital We believe that happiness and health are closely linked. Researchers have shown that optimism, quality of life & satisfaction, and other positive psychological attributes can do wonders for patients’ recovery and healing. While hospitals provide the doctors, medicine, equipment and treatment to the patients to make them better but how well they heal also depends on their mental state of mind. This together with the Ahli Lembaga Pelawat, JCI KK co-organised the Chinese New Year for the patients of Sabah Women and Children Hospital,Likas. Our aim was to create a fanfare out of Chinese New where we would endeavour to bring a little of the colour, sights and sounds of Chinese New Year to the patients. This event has been an ongoing effort by the Ahli Lembaga Pelawat for the past 11 years and this celebration has now become a running tradition for them. JCI KK is honoured to be part of this tradition.

Traditionally, Chinese New Year is celebrated as a family affair, a time to return to your roots, and one of thanksgiving. It is celebrated as a spring festival when children return home to their parents for the family reunion. It is a time of happiness, cheer and fun. A favourite time of the year for the young and old alike; a time when family members strive to be with their loved and dear ones; a time to usher out the old year and welcome the new, with great festivities and merrymaking.

The children were represented by Rumah Bakti Harapan, Rumah Anak Yatim dan Asnaf As Sakinah Papar, Puzzle Print and Thalassemia patients from Sabah Women and Children Hospital. This is carried out under the “Kiwanis MBO Mega Movie Treat, a corporate social responsibility organised by Kiwanis Malaysia, a non-governmental organisation with cooperation of MBO Cinema. This is a nation-wide effort, although Kiwanis Malaysia does not have any presence in Sabah, they have collaborated with JCI Malaysia - Area Sabah Local Organisation mainly JCI Kota Kinabalu, JCI Intan, JCI Penampang, JCI Moyog and JCI Kepayan so this project can be carried out simultaneously throughout the whole Malaysia.

2019: Year in Review Tingkod Noh Plastic Straws A plastic straw’s life span only last one drink, unlike some soft plastics, which can be recycled, plastic straws, cannot be recycled. As they travel down the conveyor belt at your local recycling facility, small items like straws fall through the cracks. This means that straws sit in landfill for years or pollute our oceans and waterways, harming marine life. In the ocean, plastic does not biodegrade. Instead it simply breaks down into smaller pieces over hundreds of years. These micro pieces of plastics are easily mistaken by fishes as food, which eventually ends up in our diets. It is estimated that 8 million tonnes of plastic pollute our oceans every year. At this rate, it is predicted by 2050, there would be more plastic than fish in the ocean. In just a little more than 30 years, what would become of our beautiful Sabah? It is our duty and responsibility to save our oceans, not only for our generation, but also, for many generations after, starting today.

Public Speaking & Debate Training

Financial Literacy Talk

The state of financial literacy among Malaysians leave much to be desired, according to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) deputy governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour. This comes as several surveys have suggested that many Malaysians are still unable to make responsible financial decisions for their own financial well-being.

Public speaking is one of the most under rated skills learned in school, yet is one of the most valuable. The way you communicate shows a lot about you, and can influence other’s opinions of you. In every profession communication is important. Good communication skills, no matter what you plan to do in life, will help you out greatly and improve your chances against a harsh job market.

2019: Year in Review Go Bald 2018 We organised Go-Bald Sabah 2018 in collaboration with Sabah Cancer Society. It is the only head-shaving event that raises funds and spreads awareness for childhood cancer. Every shaven head represents an understanding by an individual of the ordeals that a child with cancer is subjected to. The programme also aim to: 1. Raise awareness of childhood cancer in Malaysia 2. Offer a public demonstration of moral support to cancer patients and their families. 3. Tell children with cancer that it’s ok to be bald 4. Raise funds to help children with cancer, and their families. 5. Build a community of support for children with cancer, and their families Organising Chairlady Regina Ngu said “Our simple objective to support cancer patients was the overwhelming words of encouragement and support given to myself and my organising committee. This movement has encouraged people to translate their sense of love and care for one another into action. This event is supported by Kementerian Kesihatan dan Kesejahteraan Rakyat Sabah. Go Bald 1.0 - held at Imago Shopping Centre Go Bald 2.0 - held at Hospital Wanita dan Kanak-kanak Sabah. President Daphne Lo and JCI Malaysia Senate President Neelkrish Perumal suppported the programme through shaving their own head. We have a total of 51 shaven heads for Go Bald 1.0 and Go Bald 2.0. Bravo to them for taking the lead and telling the children that we can beat cancer together!
