ORGANISING CHAIRLADY regina egin gina ina a ngu ng ngu gu

It is my great pleasure in welcoming you to this Installation Awards and Ceremony, during which recognition will be given to the dedicated members and to introduce the new Board to JCI members and the public. On behalf of the organising committee and the Chapter, a special thanks to our Guest of Honour who has taken his valuable time to witness this event. His involvement and interest towards our organisation is a great support for us. We also feel very honoured that our Sisterhood Chapters and friends from outstation have come all the way to join us in this event. “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. --Henry Ford The beginning of JCI Kota Kinabalu some 56 years ago started with some idealistic youth who came together to form this chapter. After 56 years, this chapter is still thriving - this is progress. More importantly, this progress was and still is continuously being created by the ability of many young individuals coming together to work as one to create positive change - this is success. With continuous progress and success, we shall leave and continue to leave a great legacy which our past and future can be proud of. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the organising committee members for their support and always volunteering whenever manpower is needed. I consider myself very lucky to have such a great team. Our sincere appreciation to an overwhelming support from all the sponsors. Not forgetting also the JCI members, family, friends and sponsors too for their continuous support to make this event even more meaningful. I hope you enjoy the rest of the evening with us.

jci president marc brian lim

Dear Honored Members, Alumni, and Senators of JCI Kota Kinabalu: I extend to each and everyone of you my most sincere congratulations on the occasion of your 56th Installation and Award Ceremony. A wise man once said that the most important question to ask ourselves is “who brings out the best in me?”; an equally important question to ask ourselves is “who brings out the worst in me?”; but the most important question of all is “are we bringing out the best in others?” My hope is that your Installation will be a great opportunity to bring out the best among all the Members, Alumni, and Senators of JCI Kota Kinabalu in celebration of 2017 and in preparation for 2018. Since 2014, JCI has positioned itself as the “organisation that will unite all sectors of society to create sustainable impact”. This is significant because JCI exists not only for the sake of its members, but JCI now exists for the world, for the future, for the accomplishment of the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development, but at the same time to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. In closing, allow me to leave you with these words from John Wesley: “Do all the good you can; By all means that you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. For as long as you can.” Once again, congratulations JCI Kota Kinabalu!

Warmest greetings to all of you on the occasion of your 56th Installation and Award Ceremony. Now is the season of authority transfer, the peaceful transfer of authority is rare in many countries, yet it is common in JCI. In 2018, we emphasize on the members knowledge transfer and the execution of the trainers development program as well as the members business opportunities. We would like to make JCI Malaysia a true platform to develop the future leaders of our country. Member’s involvement is the most important criteria that build a member. “ Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand”. We will encourage the member’s involvement strengthening of International Relations and JCI Malaysia will actively engage with internal and external partners for better collaboration. Efficiency is very important in this digital world, especially for youth, the expected everything to be fast. Members wish to have an efficient administration system for their respective LO. Hence, to digitize is the aim and focus for the year 2018. NATIONAL

EXECUTIVE

VICE PRESIDENT ALVIS LOO

It is with great honour and priviledge that i extend my warmest congratulations to JCI Kota Kinabalu on the occasion of the 56th Installation and Awards Ceremony. As we embrace the new, “ Be Enterprising : Listen, Leverage, Legacy” is the 2018 Theme for Area Sabah. Our aim is to encourage young people to be innovative in creating significant impacts and values in career, business and community development. Listen to the needs Make less assumptions and listen more. Survey to find out what people really need before we offer. JCI Active Citizen Framework emphasizes this heavily to encourage us to identify the Root Cause of problems. Leverage on resouces around us. Be proactive seeking strategic partners and get things done more effectively and effiently. We believe working closely with government agencies, other NGOs and private sectors with similar direction and shared-values can always create greater impact. Leave Positive Legacy Be a role model. Inspire and motivate the young ones with positive energy and achievements. Good leaders are the one who plan their sucessions well and develop better leaders than themselves. “Being Enterprising doesn’t just relate to the ability to make money, but feel good enough about yourself, having enough self-worth to want to seek advantages and opportunities that will make a difference in your future.” - Jim Rohn I am confident that with the unity, creativity and passion, we will achieve greater heights in 2018. Let us leave a legacy that we will not regret.

OUTGOING PRESIDENT

PATRICK TEO EO O

BEING a chapter President has formed the most challenging year of my life. The experience gained throughout the year has changed my perception in life and from this, I have learn a great deal from it. It was challenging through its ups and down. Nevertheless, there is a famous quote, by a German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, “That which does not kill us, makes us stronger.” Many achievements have been carried throughout the year. One of the tangible achievement was Free Market, jointly with JCI Penampang & JCI Intan, supported by our sister chapter JCI Angeles City Culiat and JCI Manila. Not to forget, our greatest achievement for the year is winning the bid to host the 44th JCIM National Convention this year. This journey to the west, has vastly increased KK Jaycees branding in a tremendous way and enhance our link with local government. I attribute all these achievements and recognition to my Board of Directors and to all the members of Kota Kinabalu Jaycees. It would not be possible without your support. I sincerely thank you for your wonderful cooperation throughout my presidency. Serving as the President of JCI Kota Kinabalu has been a great and rewarding learning experience. Something that I will hold dear and remember for the rest of my life. My deepest gratitude to the ever-supportive Past President of KK Jaycees. When the times are unforgiving, they are the rock that anchors the Chapter. When the Chapter needed them most, they were there to offer much needed guidance, support and encouragement. Congratulations to Incoming President Daphne and her new Board of Director 2018. I am very confident that under her capable leadership, this Chapter will continue to achieve great accomplishments. Their enthusiasm and commitment will be the catalyst for positive change for JCI Kota Kinabalu. Last but not least, my sincere appreciation to OC Regina and her team for their commitment and positive efforts in making this event a success.

INCOMING PRESIDENT

DAPHNE LO

There is a saying, “the sky is the limit”... if so, why are their footprints on the Moon? Before the launch of the SpaceX Flacon Heavy, I always thought that I was doing things out of the box believing that the sky is the limit. But with a Tesla and Starman on their way to Mars, hold my beer, cause JCI Kota Kinabalu is going Beyond Borders! *Space Oddity by David Bowie playing in the background* Today, it is my great honour to be elected as the 56th President of JCI Kota Kinabalu. With the presidential theme, Beyond Borders, we aim to achieve the unexpected through unconventional way. Encouraging members to push themselves to explore beyond the norm without the fear of failing, knowing that they would be provided the platform and support to launch themselves beyond greatness. Perfection is not what we aim for, but for growth in our members by stepping out of their comfort zone and learning from new experiences and great leadership. JCI Kota Kinabalu is the platform for adults between the age of 18 - 40 years old to turn their couch potato bottoms into young active citizens. With the 4 pillars of JCI infused in the 2018’s Plan of Action; Business, Individual, Community, and International, JCI Kota Kinabalu intends to explore deeper into these four fields. For business, we have plans to introduce business sharing sessions, talks and also corporate visits, it not only aims to entice young entrepreneur, but also to spark new interest in members. It is also in our calendar year to introduce more individual development programs and trainings, focused optimally to help member’s development growth, and to prepare them in their journey as a JCI Kota Kinabalu member and also in becoming a young leader. JCI Kota Kinabalu believes in the service to humanity is the best work of life, therefore every year, we would organise community development projects that is sustainable. But this year, we would like to go further with projects that have a butterfly effect for generations. With JCI spanning throughout the globe, this year we wish to not only forge new, but to rekindle old JCI relationships with international JCI chapters. Every JCI have their stories to tell, experience to share, and knowledge to teach; through international networking and joint projects, JCI Kota Kinabalu wants to breakout from the box and go beyond The Beyond Borders 2018 Board Of Directors, is a dream team made to smash the impossible! JCI Kota Kinabalu would take a torque, towards greater heights and brighter future! “I think it is possible for ORDINARY people to choose to be EXTRAORDINARY”

in the beginning The idea of a Junior Chamber germinated back in 1959. The “3 Musketeers” who closely associated with the formation of the first chapter in Jesselton (now known as Kota Kinabalu) were Mr. Fauzi Patel, John Hii and Michael Chen. Fauzi Patel was on a study tour to Australia, recalled being hosted by Nombour Junior Chamber, Queensland. John Hii, manager of Messer Jardine Waugh Co. was on a training course in London. He was registered by his colleagues to attend the 17th JCI World Congress in Paris. He was impressed with the friendliness, warmth and charm. Mr Michael Chen, Manager of Cathay Cinema then, was contacted by both Fauzi & John and started recruiting members. It was only in late 1961 when Mr Lee Choon Fatt appeared that there was some momentum in recruitment. Together with another 3 members (Robert De Souza, John Su and George Chin) a meeting was held in January 1962. On July 1962, the chapter was formed and the 1st Organisation meeting was held at Jesselton Recreation Club. 17 members were present, Fauzi Patel, John Hii, Michael Chen, Lee Choon Fatt, Robert De Souza, John Su, Teo Geok Sang, Yuen Peng Cheng, Mak Sin Loong, Ho Fook Kee, Lim Kim Jee, Lim Beng Aun, John Foo, Spencer Lim, Peter Soong and Liew Yun Choi. The Jesselton Junior Chamber was formed by the following protem officers; Acting Chairman – John Hii VP (External) – George Chin VP (Internal) – Lee Choon Fatt Secretary – Fauzi Patel Treasurer – Michael Chen Directors – Teo Geok Seng, Ho Fook Kee, Yuen Peng Cheng, Mak Sin Loong The Inauguration General Meeting held on November 1962 elected the Board of Directors for 1963 Charter President – George Chin VP (External) - Lee Choon Fatt VP (Internal) – John Hii Secretary – James Yap Treasurer – Foo Tiang Keng Board members – Lawrence Liew, Lim Su Seng, Michael Chen, Fauzi Patel From a membership size of 17 in 1962, Jesselton Junior Chamber has grown and transformed into Kota Kinabalu Jaycees to Kota Kinabalu Junior Chamber and finally known as JCI Kota Kinabalu.

2017: Year in Review FreeMarket jointly organised by KK, Intan & Penampang People say that nothing in life is free but what if you could actually take anything you like without having to pay a single cent for it? It may sound too good to be true, but that is what the FreeMarket is all about. As its name suggests, the market, has a concept similar to a regular flea market, except that everything you see there can be yours, for free. Three NGOs mainly JCI Kota Kinabalu, JCI Intan and JCI Penampang jointly organised FreeMarket project at Sekolah Kebangsaan Babagon, Penampang on 19th March 2017. The 3 NGOs organised the project following their chapter’s respective installation. This is the a reflection for the first step for JCI to be more inclusive and help rural communities in the state. Among items donated in the FreeMarket were stationery, vegetables, clothes and food. The respective chapters received donation and help from Pandu Puteri, Majlis Belia Sabah as well as International JCI Chapters such as JCI Manila, JCI Angeles City and JCI Greater Zamboanga Sibugay. She describe it by using the analogy of a person being locked in a room together with a mosquito. Although the mosquitos may be small, it is still able to annoy and drive that person crazy. Definately well said! Jelly’s on the other hand, talked about youth participation as one of the key element in our country’s development. Well done Daphne and Jelly, not easy trying to talk for 7 minutes and to make sense..... we hope to see more members challenge themselves to join in the next championship!

42nd Annual National Convention Members attended the 42nd Annual National Convention held at Miri, Sarawak. During the Convention, President-elect Daphne represented Area Sabah in English Public Speaking Competition. Here are some snippets of the convention. JCI Kota Kinabalu also went full force to bid for the hosting rights for the 44th Annual National Convention. We won! Our Past President JCI Sen. Neelkrish Perumal was elected as the 2018-2019 JCI Malaysia Senate President. Also, our Past President Vitalis Ronald received the mandate to serve as 2018 JCI Malaysia National Vice President. Congratulation for all the achievements and good luck all.
