Message from National President Dear JCI Members, Greetings from your National President, Jc Ramkumar Menon. I happen to read this interesting anecdote recently…

PPP Ramkumar Menon 2017 National President – JCI India

An anthropologist has been studying the habits and customs of African tribe. He used to be surrounded by children of the tribe wherever he went and once he proposed a game for the children to play. He bought lots of candy and sweets and put everything in a basket with a beautiful ribbon attached. He placed it under a solitary tree, and then he called the kids together. He drew a line on the ground and explained that they should wait behind the line for his signal. And that when he said 'Go!' they should rush over to the basket and the first to arrive there would win all the candies. When he said 'Go!' they all unexpectedly held each other's hands and ran off towards the tree as a group. Once there, they simply shared the candy with each other and happily ate them. The anthropologist was very surprised. He asked them why they had all gone together, especially if the first one to arrive at the tree could have won

everything in the basket – all the sweets. A young girl simply replied: “How can one of us be happy if all the others are sad?” The anthropologist was dumbfounded! For months and months he'd been studying the tribe, yet it was only now that he really understood their true essence. This is part of their culture called 'Ubuntu', meaning 'humanity to others'. Doesn't this story remind us about two tenets of JCI Creed 'brotherhood of man transcends sovereignty of nations' and 'service to humanity is the best work of life'? We are in this wonderful organization to become better individuals and to empower the community in the best possible manner and let's rededicate to the ideals of our fabulous organization. The Zones I visited in July include Zone I, III, IX, XIII, XVII and XXIV. It has been heartening to see our leaders and members doing great work. The warmth, love and affection I have received from my JCI friends will remain ever memorable. Our dream for the year is to take our membership strength to 50,000 and I am confident that we will be able to make it happen with the dedication and support of the leaders and devoted JCI members. I urge all of you to plan well and execute JCI WEEK in a fabulous manner. Editor of Challenge is doing a fantastic job. Hearty congratulations to Sachin. Memories Beyond Borders JJ Alan S Ramdas Junior Ambassador APCC 2017

The memories of Asia Pacific children's convention are so dear to me. The Bridge club Japan together with the local Govt. of Fukuoka organises this convention annually. Children from more than 45 countries gather together in Fukuoka as part of this event. This is the largest convention for children in the world. India is represented by a team of six children, consisting of three boys and three girls. I was lucky enough to participate as the only junior ambassador from Kerala this year. The team consisted of Sanjamveer Singh, Het Kapadia, Tisha Chandak, Isha Sulochana and Thanuja P.S. The whole team was so vibrant and supportive. We were supported by our dear chaperon Meenakshi Kulkarni (maa as we call her) and Peace ambassedor Ritu Bhatiaji. The whole team met for the first time at Nagpur for the orientation. We practised the group performance to be done at APCC. Past Chaperon Dharini aunty supported us by giving tips and instructions. We had another orientation session on the day before departure. NP sir also encouraged us and came to see us off at the airport. I was sad to leave my family but I knew within few days I will be back. I was so excited since it was the first chance for me to travel by an aeroplane and visit a foreign country. I had always wanted to go to Japan and know their culture. I love the Japanese animes and games. I thank JCI India for giving me this wonderful opportunity. I enjoyed the journey and clicked many photos through the window. In the airport we were warmly welcomed by the volunteers. I went to marine house with JAs from other countries and with my room leader Wanom. I thought that there will be many classes at marine house. We had some classes but we had lot of fun there. My room no. was 121 and I was staying with the Cambodian boys and chaperon. Cambodian peace ambassador (PA) was with us for one day. PAs are those participated in APCC as Junior ambassadors before and are active members of the Bridge club. Junior ambassadors (JAs) are the children who represent their country APCC. After five years JAs can visit Fukuoka again as PAs. I enjoyed my stay at the marine house and love the volunteers there. They taught me how to play 'Kendama'. It consist of a stick and wooden ball hanging by a rope. The goal is to put the ball in any one of the three small pits or the thin part of the stick can be inserted in to the hole in the ball. I played with the JAs from Papua New Guinea. Children from various countries played football. During our interaction with the peace ambassadors, we danced with them. I translated the word given in English to Malayalam and wrote down the same. During Japanese students' visit to marine house I made friends with Akihiro Tsuboni, Hana Goto and Toranosuke Saito. I also become friends with the JAs of Pakistan and Bangladesh. I loved the marine house camp. I was so sad to leave. At marine house I met with Toranosuke Saito's mother Mika Saito. She was one of the volunteers during my school visit too. I gave them both gifts and they gifted me back. All the JAs and chaperons exchanged gifts. My bag was full of mementos from all over the world. During the one day visit to 'Miyatake elementary school' I was attending class 6-4. I made many friends. I was sitting with my host friend Shu. Host family is the Japanese family where I lived during the home stay. Host friend is the child at the host family who has the same age as that of the JA. The other JAs from India attended different schools during the home stay. I got one best friend named Sion. For the first time I met him with Shu and he showed me how to climb on sticks which are kept straight and he climbed on top of it. I call him 'Ninja' since he perform stunts. After one day school visit, I went with my host family to the welcome party. It was arranged by all the host families of Indian JAs and chaperon. I saw my host parents Takeshi Etoh and Sachi Etoh from the

school. My host father is a vice president of of his Jc LOM. I met my host sister Miu and host brother Jin at the welcome party. After welcome party we went to the host family. I distributed the gifts to everyone. I love them very much. They cared and loved me. My host mother prepared my lunch to school. 'Bento' is the Japanese word for lunch box. We used to play video games after school. The whole family used to play together. I played dodge ball at school, even though I didn't know how to play it. The students grow fishes in the class room. In Japan, classes up to sixth grade are regarded as elementary school. After sixth grade students get shifted to junior high school and later to high school. Lunch is usually provided to all kids and teachers at school. One day, after school Shu's friends came home. We to shopping and Ninja gave me gifts. During school visit the volunteers gifted me a super ball and Japanese fan. Unfortunately, the fan went missing. I was so sad. Ninja gifted me with a 'Dragon Ball Z' card which was so difficult to obtain. I practised Japanese calligraphy that day. I wrote my name in three scripts, 'Kanchi', 'Hirakana' and 'Katakana'. I also wrote names of Shu and Ninja in 'Katakana'. I went to see fireworks on the banks of the Yabe river with the host family. One day during school I drew a landscape. We had a 'Takoyaki' (A Japanese octopus dish) on the same day. My last day at school was also the last day of the term before the start of summer vacation. I gifted the whole class with a picture drawn by me and a greeting card. They made a scrapbook for me with lot of pictures of me and messages. I treasure this as a great gift. I cried a lot and they were sad too. After that we went to dine at an Indian restaurant, where I had seafood curry. On the same day I went to see a baseball match. The stadium we went was the one of the two baseball stadiums in the world with an openable roof. That day we slept in a car with make shift beds. When I got up in the morning, the car was moving. We visited Kyushu International museum. Lot of insects and different species of butterflies were preserved. I saw replicas of Dinosaur fossils, traditional Japanese artefacts, objects related to Samurai warriors, stuffed animals, birds, fishes etc. On the same day we went to Space world amusement and space park. I went on four rollercoaster rides with host family. It was the first time I tried seemingly scary rollercoaster rides but I wasn't scared at all. I enjoyed a lot. One of the rollercoaster rides was named Venus where I had to turn upside down. Black-hole scramble gave the experience of going through a real Black-hole. It was APCC festival on the next day and we had to perform our Indian dance as a team. I was feverish but I managed to perform well. I went back home before the end of the programs since I needed to rest. I met my host sister's friend Hatsuno Mizutani. We arranged my host sister's birthday party. She had visited Taiwan and Tonga as a representative of Bridge club, Japan. In her team there was a girl named Ako Makino, who was with us for the party. Next day, me with Shu and mom visited the Shinto temple. I got a chance to observe the Japanese rituals there. The temple shrine was known after a famous Japanese poet. On the same day they gave me a farewell party and my family gifted me with many things. These included chocolates, food items, Origami papers, Japanese fan etc. They gave gifts for my parents too. The next day was my day of return. They came to bid me farewell at the airport. I was so sad and cried a lot. They were also sad. The Japanese people are well known for their hospitality and love. They were a second family for me. I love them a lot and miss them. Yet I am in touch with them through facebook. I was lucky that I could see Mount Fuji and the yellow river of China through the aircraft window. I am sure to visit Japan again as PA and recollect all these sweet moments.

Senator A Favas Abdul Baree Nowadays business is not an easy thing, it is like a war field. It is not about who wins the war, it's about who survive at the end, and who keeps the pulse ticking always. We as businessmen of this century face many challenges like‌ Competition with big players, Cut throat competition, Lack of Labor, Diminishing business ethics, new Government Strategy Theories and polices and it goes on... Sometimes many of us question our selves "Do we need to continue our business?" But brooding doesn't even give us solution to our challenges we face. We should find a smooth way to win this race. Are you interested to know even VOID creates new business? I would like to share you all some of the challenges faced in my business and the solutions I took on time. I would extend my gratitude to JCI which taught and gave me the confidence to face such challenges. I was a speech craft participant, the first step in the training ladder of JCI India. As part of ground rules we, the participants were informed by the pilot faculty to put the mobiles in silent mode. That was the first time my phone went to this mode for long hours. I reverted all the calls in my break time. But I was not able to provide solutions to all the challenges to my staff. This made me mentally absent in the training. So I thought of switching off my mobile due to the passion in training. Our training session was over whelmed with lots of learning and confidence. Went to office and received a bag full of challenges from my staff and mainly from my big bosses, the customers. I wrote all the challenges then prioritized and made into categories. An effective decision should be taken to solve so that I can participate in PZTWS and ZTWS. I prepared to play Test match T Team Leader, Time Management, Technology I don't have an immediate second leader to take effective decision in my absence, staff didn't make their official time, and since technology was not there we couldn't make the witness for these challenges. As an immediate move a senior person was assigned as a team leader. Time recorder and cameras were installed. Original accounting software was installed for billing and the older version of paper work was removed. I went to PZTWS with all the implementation done. I switched off my phone, came back with great learning. Now I was ready for the next match, went to my office and again got a small bag of challenges, prioritized and categorized all into three and now I should

Provisional National Trainer ZD Management, Zone XVIII give a strong shot with my BAT of Belief Attitude and Technology to all the challenges. The challenges had were‌ Belief Acceptance Lack of Technical knowledge Lack of confidence Team leader didn't have the belief of being the leader; still he was good salesman since a senior salesman he was seasoned in that manner. We motivated him and gave confidence. How to fill my VOID then, made them Visualize the goal in our business Organize the time Involvement Delegate the work We made him to visualize our goal in business and guided and helped to organize his time to involve in all sort of works. So that he would update his knowledge in our business and we shared our knowledge how to delegate his work to the subordinate and supervise and that gave him strong belief to be the leader in my absence. Motivated in a way that he can also work in a better way even in my absence. Now a void was filled with a Team leader having strong belief. The working staff now accepted him as a leader because he has strong belief and more knowledge than other staff. And technology was not used properly so updating to their level with limited permission was given and training to operate it. And now it was time to ZTWS, my phone was switched off. When I returned back to my work, I was happy that I didn't have more challenges and there was just a need of fine tuning. Felt my staff, needed some recognition as they are running my business in my absence so I planned for incentives and hike in salary. Some of the routine work was missing in the fourth day. So I prepared a work chart of the routine work to be done by each member and showcased it in the work area and made them to report daily to the team leader after their completion. Now in my absence too my business grows. We share the target once in a month and they begin to start planning. My absence for the purpose of training in JCI gave me space to plan for new business. I started to plan for a new business. Now me as an entrepreneur shifted to be an Investor. And once again I thank JCI which motivated me to think BIG. And friends we have miles to go.

The Chameleons of Social Media JFD Sudeep Sebastian Provisional National Trainer JCI Edappally, Zone XX What is the real colour of a Chameleon? It might be one of the curious questions raised in our minds at some point of life. If we keep the scientific facts away, we can see that Chameleons changes its colour according to the colour of surroundings. We can find a similar scenario in social media too. Many people active in social media appear in a different colour than what they have in real. In the real world, people tend to 'wear a mask', as it were. A big part of politeness is not saying the first thing that pops into your head, or not expressing any controversial thoughts you might have, and for some reason, being online cancels out that behaviour. Why it happens? Why people behave differently in social media? Several scientific studies happened so far in this direction. Further, continuous psychological researches happen upon this subject across the world. According to me this chameleon effect of people on social media occurs mainly due to following reasons. 1. We want to impress our friends In most social media platforms we are in a world of our strong ties or close friends. They are the root of our self-esteem inflation and determine how we act on. At the end, they are who we want to impress, why we keep up with digital appearances and what we ultimately base our online identity on. Those who really want to grab attention have the tendency to object the opinion of majority even without any specific logic behind their stand. But in real life they will be forced find out a justification for their argument then and there. 2. We know we're being watched Apparently, all those 'Likes' and comments on social media profiles do affect our perceptions of ourselves. In an experiment conducted by Keith Wilcox and Andrew T Stephen, it revealed that people in social media are normally so vigilant on making opinion and selecting their message only after observing or considering the most popular opinion in regard to that subject matter of discussion. Further they have a tendency to stand with majority at times. This is why employees at social media normally support and encourage the opinion of their superior even if they are sure that it's not correct. 3. Reading other people's posts can make us less self-aware When people use social networks they spend a significant amount of time reading postings (i.e., status updates) that contain other people's feelings, thoughts and activities. Thus, by focusing users on others, and away from the self, browsing a social network may reduce selfawareness, which would also lower self-control. This will tempt them to act differently in social media with a lesser self-esteem. 4. It's easier to hate online personas than it is to hate people in real life In offline social interactions, people can adapt. But with online social networks people have less ability to tailor their message. This is why people might get along with someone in personal; and surprisingly

disagree with several of their post on social media. When we feel comfortable online, we sometimes go overboard since there is no face to face interaction happens. Further we care less about what our 'Weak Ties' think about. 5. It's easier to mention ideologies and quotes by famous people in social media In real life one should be subject matter expert to make an acceptable instant reaction. But he may get sufficient chances for research and study before reacting over social media. This helps him for stronger reactions by using known theories and quotes. Remember, people now have the current news carried in pockets and it is very easy to be updated. 6. Social media makes us less inhibited In real life, the voice of an average individual might not be so loud due to his inhibitions in communication. He may have several influential thoughts and unique ideas in his mind. But in the social networking platforms, people tend to show their vigilance. Majority express their submissive minds here since they don't have the fear of facing others. Such people reveal their true nature in social media. Psychologist John Suler narrates this as the phenomenon known as the 'online disinhibition effect'. He postulates that the aforementioned effect happens due to 6 factors: Dissociative anonymity (“They'll never know who I really am”) Invisibility (“We can't see each other online”) A synchronicity (“I can always leave my message behind without consequence”) Solipsistic introjection (“This is how I see you, in my mind”) Dissociative imagination (“My online persona is different from who I am in real life”) Minimization of authority (“I can do whatever I want online”) In general, an individual express himself in social media as how he wants be like in real life. All the conclusions and solutions they say are merely what they wished to do if they were a super hero. It's also a refugee spot for some to throw away their frustration. Social media brings world into a small device, where it seems much safer to react the way that won't always be accepted in real life. Understanding why people behave the way they do online can go a long way. It helps us to get into the mind-set of the vicious troll, the oversharing friend, and the people who don't seem to have anything better to do than post kilometric discussions in forums. Best of all, it helps us to understand ourselves – and, by extension, other people – and figure out who is the chameleon of social media and what is the real colour of them.

Let's play the Game called LIFE!!! Why hue and cry when you can get up and try!

Jc HGF Poonam Shirsat Provisional National Trainer Zone President, Zone XI Recently on my visit to my friends, their daughter insisted me to play LUDO with her. Surprisingly I had never played it before in my life but since the little girl requested me, so I learnt it from her and my friends. We started the game and it turned out to be interesting. We played game after game, won some and lost a many but felt like playing. Because…

When we start moving and get engrossed in the game we wish to either get a six or five to reach faster but do you remember sometimes longing and rolling the dice to get that 'ONE' to complete the game!

Lesson 2: In the journey there are many to knock you out and down but also there are lots of friends who are willing to help you… you must at least start!!! As you get a SIX, you start moving. You are in a race to go ahead. Ahead of your partner or at least to be in the safe zone where you cannot be knocked out, exactly! We like to be in the comfort zone in our life… in the fear to be not knocked out, forgetting only if we move out of it we can finish the game.

We wait for the right time to come, sometimes life moves on as per our plans and sometimes it has its own play. Just like the seasons or time, we will also face a lot of changes but after all life is also a game of probability, it may be good or bad, you may loose or win. You will have many friends who will support you and sometimes you may be totally knocked down by life, you may feel you have lost it now, its then you have to remember to roll the dice, you never know in your attempts to try you may WIN! There may be a lot of hurdles, setbacks and falls but it's important to fight back, to get up and try.

Lesson 4: We don't always get what we want yet we must keep rolling and in the journey everyone is important… the once not so wanted One, it was entertaining, 'ONE' too… Two, it made all of us happy and The situation when 3 of your pawns have reached home and just one out to finish, you roll the dice and it moves on its own… you have no control Three, it reminded me to be hopeful on the moves. Now it's a game of probability. You may be knocked out We played several times before I left from there and as soon as I returned or you may reach your destination. I downloaded it on my mobile. In some free time or lone time I played the game with the mobile partner and in that lonesome time I thought to Lesson 5: At times you have no control over your life but what's important that you keep rolling the dice, you may be knocked down but myself be prepared to get up and roll on, or you may even reach your goal. The game LUDO has so much to teach… And the moment you have been waiting for, from the time you started, When we roll the dice to begin the game, we wait for a SIX, hoping that to win the game! Some time you win and some times you don't WIN but we get it first and the heart starts pumping harder to move out first to you don't lose and give up. You play the game again hoping to win the start it… and that's when many a times we don't get it when we want it… next time. yet you keep rolling without giving up. Lesson 6: When you win, celebrate! But if you don't remember it's not the end. Get up, remind yourself you can always start all over again, Lesson 1: Being Hopeful and not giving up… keep rolling… keep concentrate, remember all the moves you missed or of the right moves moving in life. Since I agreed and played but was a fresher in the game, you didn't make at the right time, don't repeat your mistakes, think my friends went out to help me in my moves without the fear of them positive and roll on… losing. Sometimes even overlooked and moved a different pawn to not Just like in the game Ludo, We all are playing a game called LIFE! knock me out.

Lesson 3: You need to come out of the comfort zone to be able to Why hue and cry when you can get up and try! accomplish the goals in your life.

Journey Within

Jc Amit Surana Provisional National Trainer JCI Bangalore Cosmo – Zone XIV

A 38 Year old Sushma, was attending the annual prize distribution ceremony at her son's school. Her son, passing out of class ten and an all-rounder, had done exceptionally well. To her utter surprise she was suddenly asked to come on to the stage to express her feelings about the achievements of her son. The happiest moment of her life turned out to be the most embarrassing one, a moment of pride turned into a moment of shame. “On stage with trembling legs she could not utter a single word!” Sushma, who had got married at an early age, had been a diligent housewife, devoting all her time to her family and to daily household chores. She did her job to perfection, without giving any member of her family a reason to complain. However, in the process, she had lost touch with the external world, despite having been a brilliant student in school herself. As a result, when called on stage she was absolutely dumbfounded and failed to articulate her feelings; her body language was feeble and she could not face the audience. “She was devastated!” That night she did a deep self-introspection and wondered why life that had seemed so set, routined and comfortable, suddenly appeared distorted and disoriented. She felt very upset with herself and disgusted with the no-show she had put up. When her husband, who had handled all the parent-teacher meets and interactions with the world outside so far, returned from his business tour, she discussed the entire situation with him and also shared her desire to bounce back from the depths she had accidentally fallen into. He was very sympathetic and after thinking for a while suggested that she attend the Public Speaking Work Shop conducted by Junior Chamber International as one of its flagship programs. Seeing this as an awesome opportunity, she readily agreed and joined the 6 day extensive training program. Sushma did find the initial two days tough but her resolute will power helped her to continue. After going through the grind of the work shop, she finally emerged with flying colours. The efforts that her trainers put in ensured that her hidden powers were unravelled, and her talents beautifully polished by her mentors at the workshop. Today, Sushma apart from taking care of her household duties immaculately, has also joined an insurance firm and within 6 months has emerged as one of their star agents. In fact, she has been promoted as a Zonal Manager. She has made many new friends and has earned great respect for herself not only amongst her friends and family, but also in the neighbourhood, among clients and at office. She is very happy and full of joy with her makeover. Sushma sees a lot of positives from that award function which forced her to take the journey within. It was this self-introspection which lead her to the path of becoming a new, a confident and a vibrant Sushma.

Wash Your Brain

JFP P Natarajan Provisional National Trainer JCI Pondicherry Elite, Zone XVI jcnatarajan@gmail.com You are the creator of your own life. I want to discuss a concept that can change our life. It is one of the most powerful and valuable concepts that I have learned and changed my life. If you want to achieve Success, Self Confidence, Good Health, Prosperity, Relationship, you have to wash your brain, yes Brain Wash Yourself. Every day, everywhere you go, you are brain washed. But the question is who is washing your brain? You believe it or not the world we are living in, is trying to wash our brain and penetrate their ideas and things into our sub-conscious mind. If you do not run your sub-conscious mind yourself, Someone else will run it for you– Florence Scovel Shinn The media wants to brain wash you, certain religion wants to brain wash you, advertising companies want to brain wash you. Most of the organizations spending their huge capital in advertising and marketing, to surf our sub-conscious mind. They are trying to become a part of our paradigm and belief system. They have a slight level of control over our decision making. After some research, psychologist finally understood that, how the subconscious mind works and to penetrate into the sub-conscious mind? This leads to know, how to control the large mass and crowd? Whoever control the media, controls the mind– Jim Morrison When someone knows, how to control our sub-conscious mind? We should know how to control our sub-conscious mind. It would be better, if you know to control your sub-conscious mind. You have to reprogram your sub-conscious mind and create the desired effect in your life. You can successfully create happiness, prosperity, abundance, self confidence and fulfillment in your life. Before understanding the process of brainwash (Reprogram the brain), we should understand our sub-conscious mind. It is extremely powerful but also vulnerable. Some Facts about Sub Conscious Mind: Your sub-conscious in mind is always in recording what you See/ Listen/ Speak In your surroundings. Whether you listen or not, it records all. It is a giant in tape-recorder. It records all the events. It captures all the events like images, visualizes like a video in your mind. It doesn't hear “No/ Not”. If you have any affirmation with “No or Not” (Example: I do not smoke Cigar) sub-conscious mind doesn't hear 'Not/ No'. So, it keeps on think about Cigar and creates its impulse in brain. Instead of getting rid thinking of smoking, it increases the frequency of thinking about cigar. Sub-conscious mind knows only 'now' (Present Tense), No past tense or future tense. So if you want to achieve the goal in future, you have to feel now like, the goals are already accomplished. It controls 95% of our life. It forms habits, we are creatures of habits. Conscious mind controls only 5% of your life. If you keep on feeding something in your sub-conscious mind for a minimum of twenty one days, it can become your habit.

Sub–conscious mind doesn't know the difference between imagination and reality. When you watch horror movies, you might know it is not a real one but still you get scared. Reputation is a key to reprogram our sub conscious mind. It creates new belief in sub conscious mind. If you do anything for long enough, you start to believe even it is false. It starts to attract you and you attract that thing, what you think? To reprogram our brain, we need intelligence, persistence and small will power. Reprogram your mind with easy eight steps: Take a piece of paper; write down exactly what you want with crystal clear details. It may be a Big car, Nice home, Better job, Money and Relationship. Hang your goal poster in your home, office or somewhere else. Where you can see frequently. When you write your goals on a paper, your sub conscious mind starts to believe. 1. Visualize your goal as already accomplished. Feel the joy, happiness and energy as you have already achieved your goal. Capture the moments as images and create a nice video with your sub conscious mind. Daily play the video and enjoy the every moment in your sub conscious mind. 2. Stop watching television, news, serials, films which are contradictory to your beliefs and feelings. Be careful on choosing your friends and environment. Sometimes it may affect your positive vibrations of your sub conscious mind and affects your goal. Follow this step for a minimum of thirty days. You would feel the rise in your positive energy level towards your goal. 3. Create a short and sweet affirmation sentence that implies your desired goal in present tense; such as “I am wealthy”, “I am healthy”, and “I am happy”. 4. Create an alarm in your mobile phone. It will remind you to recite your affirmation. It is better to choose only one goal in your affirmation. 5. Listen to your affirmation. Make an MP3 audio clip with your affirmation sentence and put it in your mobile. Daily before going to bed and while you sleep, listen to your affirmation in pleasant volume through headphones. It compliments your goal. Your sub-conscious mind starts to adapt, what you hear. 6. Begin to talk about your desire, as it is already in effect. Let's say, you have a conversation with your friends about your finances. Talk like you have already achieved the prosperity. Imagine and speak as already achieved your goal. Remember, your reality follows your imagination. 7. Repeat.. Repeat.. Repeat.. New habits and belief are formed through repetition. Remember, it takes minimum of 21 days to form a new belief. If you repeat and follow these easy eight steps, successfully you can wash your brain.

Staying Positive

Jc Vikram Kothari Provisional National Trainer, JCI Bangalore Cosmo, Zone XIV Vikramkothari777@gmail.com I recall an instance when I was approached by a religious organisation with an invite to conduct a session on Positive Attitude for brotherhood of mankind. After gathering information about the participants from the organizers and being convinced that I could add value through my training, I accepted the invitation and began preparing for the session. Finally the day arrived. I took on to the stage. But even before I could utter a word, few people in the audience went hostile making it clear that they did not want this session to happen. Seeing this, the organizers intervened resulting in a walkout by the opposers. I was calmly observing and assessing the scenario. On request, I continued my session with the remaining participants. By the end of my session, I was happy on seeing positive vibes from the present participants, who then disclosed the real reason behind the chaotic scene that was created a few moments ago. I was made aware of the ideological differences between communities in the area and my session on brotherhood was a stumbling block to a group of people who did not believe in resolving things peacefully. The message of love and harmony would be a barrier in spreading their ideology of hatred through radical extremism. It also came to my knowledge that a couple of months ago, a member of this group was put behind bars for spreading violence and that his family was facing severe hardships. Now, it was crystal clear that my Value Addition as a trainer wouldn't be complete if the extremists weren't addressed appropriately as they were ruining their lives as well as the lives of their innocent family members. But I was clueless about how that could ever be possible. It's truly said - “A will find a way my mind came up with a wonderful idea. I asked the organizers to call the pained family members on their upcoming community event with a

request to share publicly the financial crisis they had to face, the emotional trauma and harassment they had to undergo due to the imprisonment of the head of their family. I believed this would soften the hard line approach of the extremists in resolving issues. Days passed by. And yesterday, I was taken by surprise. The same organizers came to my office, accompanied by the hard line opposers who had walked out, with an invitation to conduct a session on positivity for them. They said that the flowing tears of the pained family during the community event had shook everyone from deep within and their experience sharing proved to be a real eye-opener. Friends, ''Staying Positive'' forms an integral part of one's personal development. We all are prone to face situations and challenges. This is when the need of the moment shifts from 'being positive' to 'staying positive'. As a trainer, I had to come out of my comfort zone, explore diversities across cultures and at the same time enhance my ability to see common patterns across them. My belief as a Jaycee that brotherhood of mankind transcends all manmade boundaries gave me strength to stand firm on values that I truly believed in. Here are my three simple steps to Stay Positive: 1) Stay Calm during observation/ listening. 2) Assess the situation with an optimistic approach. 3) Find the root cause of negativity and cleanse to perfection. I have gladly accepted their invitation to conduct a session and hopefully I'll be sharing my experience of this session in my next article. Till then, Happy training to my fellow trainers and Happy learning to my co-learners.

Life... A Great Teacher

Jc Rahul Rajendran Provisional National Trainer, PZVP JCI Cannanore - Zone XIX When I started working on the task of writing a short piece on personal development, I realized that it is a mammoth task trying to portray my development through a short article. But I will try to be as brief as possible. While reflecting on all my humble attempts, achievements and failures, it came to me that this piece of writing should begin with my core value which has influenced every decision I made. This cannot be explained better than through the quote by the inspirational philosopher, Sri Narayana Guru – “any deed for the benefit of oneself should also benefit others” I started my career in business immediately after my graduation by helping my dad to start a polypropylene bag unit. Working on this project, I gained valuable experience and learning and I started to believe that I could run a business successfully on my own (though I was wrong). This led me to expand further from the production unit to start a trading company for polypropylene bags. While I did well with this company for the next three years, I started realizing that I would not find work fulfilling unless it bears the vision rooted in my core value. What I needed was to develop a big project which is challenging enough for me and at the same time would provide employment to many who were in need. This led me to move on from the trading company to starting a bigger business venture. However, the biggest challenge was obviously the capital. Hence, I decided to start a service industry / business I started a company which acted as a channel partner to many new generation banks and our core business activity was to support banks' business and act as an interface between the banks and their customers for various services. Within 5 years my company grew, with offices in almost all districts of Kerala and in certain parts of Karnataka. And I could employ more than 200 people. However, I realized that none of my employees was from a low socio economic background, they were educated and could get a job anywhere with their qualifications and skills. So my vision of helping people in need was not fulfilled. Since it was all about dealing with finance, I learned discipline in life and started practicing it sincerely After further contemplation, long hard discussions and using the experience in the service industry, I decided to start a laundry unit. The main reason for this decision was that this business while being profitable, would also allow me to employ men and women who were in need. This was made possible with two of my friends from the Jaycee movement (Jc Vijay and Jc Irshad) as partners, who shared my vision and values. We then established a laundry unit in my home town. This ran successfully for a few years but we had to close it down due to inevitable reasons. I was down but I made sure that I was not out yet. I explored all possible avenues and finally I was able to relocate it to Karnataka. This experience taught me that in the face of adversities,

one should never give up or lose hope and success will definitely come in his way. This new venture was fulfilling as we managed to employ people from marginalized strata of the society, who were in need of jobs. This included people who had not had any formal education, who were from diverse backgrounds, and who were differently abled. It made us realise that while profit is important in a business, it is far more fulfilling to have an impact on the lives of the poor and the needy. I could see the happiness on their faces and tears of joy welling in their eyes when they received their wages. Many of them had never seen notes in bundles before. We saw to it that all staff received a five digit salary and that everyone involved, both employees and customers, were happy. Last year was again a changing phase in my life as I became the Zone Vice President of Zone XIX. This was challenging and I felt that I was not yet ready for this responsible task. However, with encouragement and at times persuasion from my two seniors from JCI (Jc Hazeeb Hassan and Jc KPT Jaleel), I decided to take up the challenge. This paved the way to to push myself out of my comfort zone and doing presentations in front of different sets of people which helped me to discover the trainer in me. I participated in ZTWS 2016 jointly conducted by zone XIX and XXI and was adjudged the outstanding participant. It was a joyous moment. I cannot forget the guidance given by our pilot faculty Jc Raajilan and the support of our faculty team Jc Biju and Jc Haneefa and I am indeed thankful to them Furthermore, these new challenges were excellent learning and development opportunities and I started to push my boundaries farther than I ever before. Further expanding my horizon, I was the only participant from Kerala to qualify at NTTTS North 2017 at Vapi and one of the 11 participants who qualified from 30 contestants. Our pilot Jc Rajesh Chandak and faculty team PEVP Jc Keshav Jain and Jc Sandip Purohit helped me change my approach towards training completely. Both ZTWS and NTTTS were life changing experiences in my life. While my work has provided me with great learning opportunities and has helped me shape my vision and values, my involvement in JCI has acted as wind under my wings and helped me soar high. But I realised that I still have miles and miles to go… My humble advice is that, each one of you should follow your passion and reach the stars. Let not success blind you or failures pull you down. Before I cIose I would like to thank my family, my friends and my wellwishers for all the positive criticisms and support they have rendered. Dear Life, thank you for all the valuable experiences you have provided.

Of Words and Needs Let's Be Conscious and Cautious Too!

Jc G.Chandrasekaran JCI Pattukkottai Wings, Zone XXIII When it comes to the use of language, many tend to heart verbally in the name of speaking; some respond with stock phrases that are in store; some reproduce the words that are usually uttered by others; some rejoice in using the words that are high sounding and pompous. Only few, in fact, speak with awareness of their target audience and they are the people who are communicative. Communication among human beings is both complex and creative. Linguistic conveyance of ideas and emotions acquired a variety of shades and colors down the ages, however, many among us mistake that words are the sole carriers of our thoughts. It is alarming to note that only seven percent of our communication takes place through words. On the other hand, our tone, thirty eight percent and our body language (gestures and postures) contributes fifty five percent. If this being the fact, why should time and energy is unduly wasted upon words? On televisions, on films and on political platforms it has been the fashion of the day to talk endlessly. Even to describe a simple thing they go for very big and high sounding words. At this context one cannot but remember James Boswell, the biographer of Dr. Samuel Johnson who indulged in lengthy sentences with polysyllabic Latin words. “Sir, when you make a fish speak it speaks like a whale is the comment of Boswell on Johnson's unique style. In the age of information technology and super highways if you were not short, you are not smart. Some words, phrases and idiomatic expressions are no more relevant to the present day society. Discarding those obsolete expressions would be wiser. However, those who learned them in their formative years find this idea not palatable since, according to them, they add color and variety to the language. True, but it is communication that we use a language for. Should it be right to sacrifice that for the sake of yester century's expressions that are irrelevant today? Instead of 'beating around the bush' why not we say 'browsing in the net' in the same way we may replace "breaking the wrong tree" with "clicking a wrong site". In parallel to 'swim with the current' we can use 'run on the mouse'; along with "shouting in the wildness" with "clicking the Google" Face is the index of mind can be in of my friend and so on. Certain other words, because of their will to survive, find permanent places in a language though not with original meanings. For instance, the word 'fond' meant 'foolish' to john Milton but today we all use it in the sense 'love'. Right evolution! On the contrary even after we have struck the death knell to monarchy, sycophancy seems to rule the rulers. Those

who want to please the people in powers always roam in the corridors of power with clichĂŠs and buttered words like 'Your Highness', 'Your Eminence', 'Your most High Honor', and so on. Habitual and mechanical expressions of words do fall from one's lips and hence bear no sense. When words are devoid of any emotion they become ritualistic and can have no impact. Most of our daily prayers are routine sounds that 'signify nothing'. However the buttered words of sycophants deserve the purpose even though they sound horrible to the honest. People like King Lear can easily be fooled by honeyed words. His first two cunning daughters have their successful innings by their skillful use of pompous words of flattery. They make mountains out of mole hills. But for a few, the talk shows in many of our television channels cater mostly to hearts than to heads. Tears will naturally roll down your cheeks when you listen to their tragic tales. It is sad, in fact, to note their pitiable plight but it would be worthier to address those social diseases through our intelligent thinking rather than making them weep on the stage. Ordinary people, when they are overwhelmed with the sad thoughts of their self experiences, find it hard to talk on them, since a lump comes onto their throats. But these selective few extraordinary people seem to rejoice over their own emotive narrations. It is quite natural that movie makers and TV serial producers make much of money out of glycerin and long faces, hiring professional people. But some smart directors of these talk shows make so much more by exposing the never ending real life tragedies of the unfortunate multitude. Telephones, a scientific marvel, were originally used to convey certain vital information in a state of emergency. But they have turned out to be a pastime, sweet nothing, bitter nothing and many a time nothing but nonsense. Where lays the source from which the desire for incessant talk springs? Like any other tangible instruments of scientific innovation our language too is an instrument evolved over thousands of years. Loving it is quite natural and comprehensible but dotting it as a teenage lover is senseless. When compelled to see a cinema of forties a teenager retorted, 'who can stand those endless talks? They speak volumes where a word or two could easily serve the purpose'. If this be the comment upon an old movie what about our talk shows, serials, and cell phonic conversations? Like glassware, words too are fragile in nature. We have to handle them with care and caution. If not, they would make us plead and bleed too. Hence a vow can be taken to use fewer words before it would be useless!

SAMRAT A journey from good to great leadership

International Leadership Summit (ILS) Edition 2 SAMRAT highlighted on vision, trust, perseverance, knowledge, communication skills, relationship skills, analytical skills, importance of standard performance and conflict management. The Director of the Show PNP Santoshji took all the pains behind the screen and left the pleasure to the participants. The Music Director of the show PNP Subramanianji had stolen show with his effective moderation by summarizing each and every session effectively. The summit was a grand success with 100+ participants. ILS 2017 was hosted by JCI Bangalore Silicon City. The workshop started at 9.30 am on 22nd July, 2017 at Hotel Movenpick. All the participants were welcomed in a traditional way with tilak and Mysore Petas. Then the program started with National Anthem followed by Jaycee Creed. Welcome Address given by host ZP Jc Siddalingappa. Chairman of the event, IPNP Senator Rajshree Bhaje briefed about the two day program Samrat. Later the program was inaugurated by the Chief Guest JCI EVP Mark Brian Lim and other guests. Later all the guests and participants had group photos. The first session was taken by JCI President 2010 Roland Kwemain on Leadership in thinking, speaking and acting. Always think twice before you speak by looking beyond. Later he spoke about creating goals and said that it is the first step to be a leader. In this process we have to overcome the fear. Fear of our own and the fears of others. This fear has to be conquered. There are two ways to succeed as a leader. One is by using people and the other one is by serving people. We always have to choose the way of serving people but not the way of using people. The post lunch session was taken by JCI EVP Senator Mark Brian LIM. He spoke about the leadership knowledge. When we evolve to develop as a leader, we need to develop the knowledge. Now most of us are of millennial generation. This is normally born after 1990. But if you are thinking in a modern way, you also belong to that generation even though you were not born after 1990. To become a leader in this modern age, we need great ideas. These ideas can be strengthened only when you put forward them. To become a great leader, we need to start strong and finish strong. After the tea break, PNP Vallbji started his session on application of knowledge. He said that leadership is not mere a position, it's an art and a science. In applying the knowledge, the human element is so important. In understanding the people, it is very much important we need to have the enthusiasm, initiation; this initiation starts with 'I'. Your ability to apply the knowledge is most important because you are dealing with people. If you want to change the world, you need to be the change. In this process you need to welcome the challenges. After that, day one ended with a photo session with all the teams. In the night all the participants enjoyed the DJ and had the dinner. On the second day PWP Roland took a session on leadership skills. In these skills the communication skills, relationship skills, analytical skills are very important. First we need to understand the

communication. We need to overcome the misconceptions. In this process quantity is no guaranty for quality. Whenever you respond, take a pause before you respond. Learn the art of listening; it will help you to learn a lot. Reduce the barriers in communication by establishing the effective interpersonal relationships. Communication is tool for action. Hence we need to communicate effectively. The next session was taken by PNP Vallabji. He spoke about Managing Conflicts. In this session he enlightened how to manage the crisis. We need to have the clarity to understand, diagnose the problem, analyze the causes of the problem, and try to develop as many solutions as possible. Try to find out the best among them and implement it. In analyzing the problem, we need to understand the needs, emotions, receptiveness and acceptances. Saying a nastiest thing in a nicest manner is important. Solutions always come in down to up approach. If you want to solve a problem, go to the root cause of the problem, then it's very easy to solve it. Then the Secretary General of JCI Senator Arrey Obenson gave his message online. He spoke about the leadership attitude. He said that life is like a school, experience is a school master. Take advantage of every experience to learn. The knowledge, as a leader you get will help you to grow as a better individual. Good leaders solve the problems of today; great leaders create opportunities of focusing on the challenges. No one knows what is going to happen in the future. Make a commitment to yourself to become a smart leader. He ended with a note, a good leader sees the challenge, and a great leader makes it as an opportunity. The final session was taken by PWP Roland on leadership trust. In this session, he spoke about how to build the trust? Practicing what we preach is the best way to build trust. Consistency is more important than perfection. If you want to be trusted, be honest. Honesty is the foundation of life. As a leader/ manager, think and share with us three ideas that you can put in place to take initiation, lead by example and be committed. He ended with a note that a poor man can be a rich leader; a rich man can be poor leader. PNP Senator Ravi Sankarji was the chief guest for the valedictory. He enlightened the participants with his thought provoking speech. He highlighted to do the things without postponement. Do the things with a let's do it approach. At the end all the participants were given the certificates at the graduation ceremony. PNPs Vamanji and TVN Murthyji also graced the occasion. Thus the ILS 2017 enlightened all the participants on the basis of three basic aspects of effective and transformational leadership, viz. Leadership Attitude, Leadership Skills and Leadership Knowledge. A report by‌
