Reflections “One of the marvelous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way we couldn't as individuals. When we pool our strength and share the work and responsibility, we can welcome many people, even those in deep distress, and perhaps help them find self-confidence and inner healing.” ~ Jean Vanier, Community And Growth

UMW Sunday Sunday, September 25, 2016

Metropolitan will celebrate United Methodist Women on Sunday, September 25, 2016 in worship and at our annual Welcome Back Luncheon. T.C Morrow will be our preacher at both Metropolitan worship services. All members of the UMW are welcome to the luncheon that follows, as are any women who would like to learn more about the UMW. Prospective members are invited to be our guest! T.C. Morrow inspired many United Methodists this year as she courageously responded to her life-long call to ministry, seeking ordination, even though she is a married lesbian woman. Her candidacy was given serious consideration by the Baltimore Washington Conference Board of Ordained Ministry (BOM), under the leadership of our own Charlie Parker. The BOM recommended T.C.’s candidacy, but the Clergy Session of Annual Conference failed to approve the recommendation by a narrow margin.(http://bwcumc.org/clergy-vote-not-to-commission-deacon/) Throughout the challenges of this process, T.C. maintained steadfast grace and gentleness in her response to negative comments made to and about her. T.C. continues her work at the National Religious Campaign Against Torture. She is well prepared to help us think about our congregational commitment to “pursuing justice.” Corrine Cannon is the founder and director of the DC Diaper Bank. Our UMW began supporting the Diaper Bank nearly two years ago, as we came to understand that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is better known as Food Stamps, did not permit recipients to use Food Stamps for diapers or feminine hygiene the products. In 2014, we held a Diaper Drive prior to our Recognition Luncheon, as part of our recognition of babies born to UMW members during that year. At Great Day of Service in March, 2015, a team of UMW helped to bundle diapers at the warehouse, for distribution to families in …………………………………………………………Continued on pg. 3

need. That continued effort was followed by our “Red Tent” drive for feminine hygiene products that were distributed at one of our Campus Kitchen food distribution sites. Because one of the purposes of the UMW is to support local organizations that serve women and children, we made the Diaper Bank a primary recipient of the 2016 Book Sale, held in March of this year. As the speaker for our Welcome Back Luncheon, Corrine will share with us some of the many exciting developments in the expansion of the DC Diaper Bank. ~ Ellen Bachman UMW President

Present your 2015 “Pledge to Mission” on UMW Sunday Similar to last year, if you have not yet had the opportunity to make your Pledge to Mission, we encourage you to bring your annual pledge/contribution to the luncheon.

Recognition Lunch

Volunteers Needed for New UMW Hospitality Corps

Each year the UMW of Metropolitan Memorial hold a Recognition Luncheon honoring women who have made a significant contribution to the church the nation, and the world. This year the luncheon will be held on Sunday, December 4th at 12:30 p.m.

Making all feel welcome at the table is an important aspect of our Christian faith. The UMW is seeking to build a small but industrious hospitality corps that will help manage critical serving aspects of our general meetings such as the UMW luncheon for September, the Recognition Luncheon in December and other UMW events as they arise. Are you creative, energetic, got a good eye for decorations and a sharp pencil for menu planning? Then we are interested in hearing from you. Please contact UMW President Ellen Bachman at ellenbachman@comcast.net to volunteer.

We are seeking nominations of outstanding women to honor this year. Please submit nominations to Beverly Fleming at Beverly.fleming@gmail.com.

UMW News UMW Bazaar Saturday, November 5, 2015 Yes, it’s that time already! Work toward the UMW’s annual bazaar begins in June, and all manner of help is needed. Each year, thanks to the efforts of many, this event raises significant funds that the UMW passes on to projects aiding the welfare of women and children locally, nationally, and around the world. What can you donate? What’s for sale? All manner of gently-used items, such as:  Things for the kitchen / China and other Collectibles / Puzzles and games / “Attic Treasures” / Christmas decorations / New and like-new items for the Gifts boutique / Hand-made crafts / Accessories, Scarves, Belts, Handbags. All of the preceding categories may be dropped off at

any time outside the UMW closet.(on the mezzanine level through the double doors at the end of the Vestry). Closet is kept locked for security reasons and holds only items that the sorting and pricing team has already boxed up.

Jewelry (Must be delivered to the church office. Do not deliver to the UMW closet

Boutique-quality ladies’ wear such as jackets, sweaters and gowns (please hold on

area. Thank you.)

to these for now; do not drop with other donations outside the UMW closet area since we lack appropriate space to store them adequately) . Contact Connie McWorkman if you have boutique-quality items to donate.

The Bake Sale, as well as Lunch on site featuring our renowned Harvest Soup and more, will continue! Also continuing will be the Alternative Gifts table, where you may purchase a gift that will directly support a specific UMW-sponsored project. What we don’t take: 

No furniture (we have neither storage nor display space)

No used electronics or old phones (these don't sell well)

No books (Save them for the spring book sale; we don't have storage space to take them now. The only exception: We will

take children's books for sale in the children's section at the bazaar. Again, children's books only.) 

No clothing (Except for Boutique-quality ladies’ jackets, sweaters, and gowns. See above. But again, do not drop these at the UMW closet -- we don't have good

A Treasure Trove of Thanks! Dear Sisters! Your generosity, shown through your hard work, monetary gifts, and tremendous spirit, has aided so many in our local and global communities. Please accept not only my words of gratitude, but the words of thanks below from those who directly benefited from our recent UMW gifts. What a blessing it was to have Rev. Dottie Yunger and Rev. Kate Payton lead us and walk with us while sharing their many talents and gifts over the past several years! Although we wish that they were still physically worshiping with us, we know that they are carrying out their missions as UMW members and pastors of their own churches in our Baltimore-Washington Conference. As an expression of our deep appreciation and support for them, we decided as a UMW community to honor these special women with gifts to organizations that conduct work Continued on pg. 6 Metropolitan UMW Newsletter : September 2016

about which they care greatly. Given Pastor Dottie’s passionate commitment to the health and well-being of all of God’s creatures, including those that swim in the earth’s waters, fly in its skies, and walk/crawl/run across its diverse lands, we provided a gift of $200 to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF). The Foundation thanked UMW for the gift, noting, “this is a wonderful way to pay tribute to [Dottie], while helping the CBF restore, preserve, and protect the Bay and its tributaries for current and future generations.” Pastor Kate’s long-time, hands-on engagement with women and children in Nicaragua was honored by a $200 gift to Dr. Lizzett Cortez’s dental clinic, which will assist them in purchasing a new, badly-needed x-ray machine. Dr. Cortez wrote in appreciation of our gift and reiterated the dire need for the new equipment: “We are very grateful for this very generous gesture. … (the x-ray machine will be used) for the diagnosis and treatment of children in extreme poverty from the rural schools we serve.” Thanks to your tremendous efforts, and the leadership of Anita Seline and Martha Mizroch, our March Book Sale was a HUGE success! The books collected from our fellow church members and the broader community generated an unbelievable $7,000, which allowed us to make two gifts of $3,500 each, to the D.C. Diaper Bank and to Bright Beginnings. Although the friends and staff at Bright Beginnings are still very saddened by the passing of Executive Director Dr. Betty Jo Gaines, who many may remember from our September 2015 UMW Sunday luncheon, they continue to very capably serve our city’s vulnerable homeless children through their exceptional programs. Acting Executive Director Doris Dupuy wrote to express their gratitude for our gift and for the leadership that Dr. Gaines provided: “Thank you for your continued support and generosity. The world is a better place because Dr. Gaines was here, but we still have a lot of work to do. We will do it with your help and in her honor.” Some people are very hard to replace. Dr. Gaines was one of them. However, the staff at Bright Beginnings is attempting to do just that, and provided me with a position description. If you would like to receive a copy of the description, please let me know and I will share it with you. What an honor it is to serve with such incredible women as Dottie, Kate, Dr. Cortez, and Dr. Gaines, as well as each of you! I add my thanks to those shared with us, and look forward to a new year of service for the women and children in our local and global families! In love, gratitude, and peace, ~ Rita S. Mary Petrie Greer died June 7, 2016 at the age of 95. She was a long-time member of MMUMC and was active in the UMW. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walton J. Greer, and her daughters Betsy Houston and Kathy Gulnac. She is survived by her sons-inlaw Stuart E. Houston and Jon Gulnac. She is also survived by three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Monica Pree, daughter of Wesley and UMW member Paula Pree, passed away June 27, 2016. Monica was an inspired teacher, mediator, spoken word and visual artist, poet and dancer. She was a native of Washington, DC and previously served in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica. A Celebration of Life was held at Wesley UMC Saturday, July 16, 2016. The service was truly a celebration of Monica's life. There were remembrances from family and friends, including Paula. A sharing of Monica's wishes was given by Rev. Kate Payton. Of course, the Celebration was filled with music befitting such a multi-talented woman. Following is the Prayer of Thanksgiving and Commendation that was recited in unison at Monica’s Celebration: "All gracious and loving God, we give thanks for Monica's life, for defeats mastered and tasks well done. We give thanks for the way she loved. We give thanks for how she fought the good fight, how she finished her course and how she kept the faith. We give thanks for having the opportunity to love her. And now, we commend her spirit to you and to your eternal care and glorious presence. Receive Monica into the arms of your mercy. Raise her up with all your people. Receive us also and raise us into a new life, always being thankful for Monica's gifts to us and to the world."

UMW News A Letter from Mission U 2016 This year’s Baltimore-Washington Conference “Mission U” was held July 29 – 31 at the Pooks Hill Marriott in Bethesda, MD. Barbara Tate, Helene Lilly and I attended. We are so fortunate that the BW Conference draws the committed and talented ministers and instructors we had working with us. I think virtually all of our leaders either graduated from, or are currently students of, Wesley Theological Seminary and they shared a wide array of spiritual gifts. The plenary study topic was “The Bible and Human Sexuality”. You can imagine how fraught and loaded expectations were for that. I had assumed that the discussion would focus on LGBTQ issues within our faith, but that really only came up at the end. We read several passages in the Bible that refer to a woman’s sexuality and we talked about how each passage was different. We also acknowledged how some scriptures had adamantly been interpreted to mean one thing during a certain period in history, and as time passed, God’s people have returned to the same passages and found newer understanding. The sessions could have easily been rote, polite and superficial, but I thought that the two leaders, Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bonita Belt, African-American woman (who has 2 grown children), and Rev. Matthew Tate, a youthful-looking white guy (who has a 1 year-old daughter), kept things pretty real as they shared their perspectives and experiences and encouraged openness from the group. The choices for breakout studies were: Latin America: People and Faith and Climate Justice: Call to Hope and Action . Helene and I were in a section taught by Mike Koob of Middletown UMC. Mike wrote an open letter to the 2016 General Conference, urging it to divest clergy pension funds from fossil fuel companies. It’s easy to say that we want to act on climate change, but if that were my nest egg and my child’s financial safety net, how would I vote on the issue? With each study session, it became evident to me that we are so invested in the lifestyle that got us to this point, there is no one decision that will give us an easy way out. As United Methodist Women, this is like any other call to do justice since the poorest suffer the most drastic effects of climate change, from losing the terrain on which their homes are built to absorbing the manufacturing waste that seeps into their water, food and air, all so that I can buy a clock radio for less than $10 (and probably throw it away a year later). We talked in small groups about what each of our churches is doing. No one uses Styrofoam anymore and many women said that they had dusted off the church china and water glasses for routine use at fellowship events. Look for the Climate Justice study book in the MMUMC library and at least, read Chapter 5 – Climate Injustice, Earth Consequences by our own Dottie Yunger. (It’s the best chapter!) But more than learning new facts, Mission U is about learning together, among women who have very different daily lives, but who feel the same burst of joy at the opening strains of “Woke up this mornin’ with my mind stay’in on Jesus!” Women who grew up under different realities from mine, but who wake up each day to the same struggle of hearing …………………………………………………………………………………… ..Continued on pg. 8 Metropolitan UMW Newsletter : September 2016

God’s quiet call over the cacophony of life in the DMV. We brought as many opinions as we were in number, but we were all there to be in community and because we all want to be God’s eyes, ears, arms, hands, feet and heart in the world. That kind of sisterhood is pretty hard to beat.

For Courage To Do Justice

O Lord, Open my eyes that I may see the needs of others; Open my ears that I may hear their cries; Open my heart so that they need not be without succor; Let me not be afraid to defend the weak because of the anger of the strong; Nor afraid to defend the poor because of the anger of the rich. Show me where love and hope and faith are needed, And use me to bring them to those places. And so open my eyes and my ears That I may this coming day be able to do some work of peace for thee. Amen. ~ Alan Paton, South Africa, The United Methodist Hymnal, #456. Mission U (formerly the School of Christian Mission) is an annual weekend dedicated to studying current topics in Social Justice. Mission U and Youth Mission U are cosponsored by United Methodist Women and the Board of Global Ministries.

Craft and Art: The Sign-up Is Underway! Show on Sunday, October 23

Our creative congregants are invited to sign up for the Arts Council's Congregational Craft and Art Show, to be held in the Great Hall on October 23. As we've said previously, we're interested in displaying crafts and art in all mediums: fabrics, jewelry, knitting, crocheting, wood carving or fabrication, photos, paintings, drawings, glass, ceramics, baskets, weaving -- and this is not a complete list. Items that can be hung on walls can be left in place for a few weeks, but the three-dimensional pieces will be on view for just a single day. Please let us know what you're thinking of showing. We'd like to know the medium, approximate size, and number of items, as well as your name, e-mail address, and telephone number. THIS IS NOT A COMMITMENT; you can change any aspects of it later, or even decide not to participate. And of course you can sign up later (though signing up now might serve as a good incentive). Send your information to one or more of the following: Carol Schleicher, rschlei@verizon.net; Marilu Wood, shedelwood@gmail.com; or Carol Griffith, carolgriffith33@hotmail.com. If you don't use e-mail, you're welcome to corner us at church or call us. We're hoping to be overwhelmed! Metropolitan UMW Newsletter : September 2016
